“…the quality of steel would basically make it magic” now I kinda wanna see an isakai but the main character is a sword enthusiast and brings one of their swords XD
and a master forger forging the best sword in the land
We basically live in a world of magic compared to basically everyone else before 1900AD.
That's kind of the idea of Dr. Stone, in which mankind was petrified for over 3000 years, leaving everyone who wakes up later back into the stone age and the protagonist uses his extensive knowledge of chemistry and engineering to quickly build up technology with the help of the locals.
@@legionofthedamned157 the quality of the steel comes from modern foundries that make special alloys with insanely high control over percentages of materials used.
The forgers just buy the metal bars and shape them. So even a good modern blacksmith from modern times could not do much better swords with middle age materials

Shad would be the perfect swords salesman who adventures could come across.
Would be very interesting to see how this sword performs with a proper sharpening considering it seems pretty durable otherwise.
It most likely has a very thin edge which would make it deform easily compared to other swords. This is the trade off for insane cutting power.
XVIIIc blades tend to be quite fragile when properly sharpened. It's just what happens when the blade is that thin.
@@finalbossdit's weird how these blades even managed to become popular in the late 15th century, since this is when infantry started to really get armored up. You wouldn't think a blade made for chopping, but fragile against hard targets, would become popular when pretty much every target around was hard. But it did.
Since armor required other means of damage like blunt force trauma or joints, it makes sense to design a weapon that is better suited to less armored targets. You would switch weapons depending on the need to do so.
You need to put paint over those marks on the tree. Trees can die from damage to the bark because illness and parasites can come in that way.
This comment needs to be far higher. I doubt Shad understands the damage he is doing but it is frustrating to see live trees get damaged without considering the long-term effects. My family just went through a massive expensive of having to take down a giant red gum due to its decoration from insects and infection after being vandalized about 10 years ago. There is just no need to damage trees like that for a youtube video when there is plenty of dead wood to test against.

Beautiful sword! Thank you for sharing.
The cheerleader in me was very much shouting "GET IT, SHAD!" the whole video. The mother hen in me was crying "SIT DOWN AND HAVE SOME WATER AND A REST!"
Shad, you should one day do a video on Bronze Age swords/combat and talk about how it has evolved since then.
Good review. For your strikes on the tree, there is a portion that you cut through the bark and down to the sapwood. You should coat it using spray paint to seal the tree and protect it from bugs and fungus.
Yes. Good stewardship makes a happier land.
Or, don't use a living tree in the first place. Not cool.

You should talk about where the “knight slays a dragon” and other European stories come from
oh boy, that's a deep path down paganism, comparative mythology, and speculative paleolithic story telling...
to start your journey, I'd suggest looking up Chaoskampf
It would be interesting to see how it performs once properly sharpened, should become a cutting beast, so there's a suggestion for a follow up video on this one I guess.
Love your content mate!
Man, Kult of Athena never disappoints
take care of your self mate. Loving your videos, yep looks like an arming sword to me too.

Always fun watching Shad and co "going medieval" on some trees
I started collecting swords in 1995. It's amazing to see how many more makers there are & the overall improvement in design/quality; especially in the last few years!
It's definitely a better time for European sword replicas!
This and the Albion Principe are my favorite swords when balance and tip control is your favorite game.
I want shad to go wild with some Albion swords
I remembered a demonstation on the History Channel made by the ARMA guy who cutted a tatami with a blade so blunt he passed his bare hand along the edge without cutting himself.
Yeah, John Clements, questionable presentation style and views on fencing, but the dude is in awesome shape, his point about lade geometry is good but also it's cus he that fit.
@@PJDAltamirus0425 Well he did cut those tatami with a a blade as blunt as a butter knife.
Maybe they were half matts, but still.
Besides he was one of the first who helped in the demystification of the Katana.
@@allopez8563 Yeah, off course. Just his style and his constant bringing up of flatamystrong caused a of controversy in the early days of the youtube HEMA community. Yeah, he basically showed good blade geometry, biomechanics and physical fitness can be subsitute for razor sharpness along with showing than tatami isn't the end all cutting medium. Probably saved allot of people money cus knocked out of the headspace they have to use those when there are plenty of alternatives like soaked newspaper, soaked rolled cardboard, etc.
@@PJDAltamirus0425 almost no newspapers in my country nowdays. I have being using only water bottles. The soaked cardboard sounds like a good idea.
Oh yes "parry with the flat". Hahahaha.
Personally on a side note regarding the titan sword, if you can source old carriage springs from broken down cars they make wonderful blade material.
The Hanwei Mercenary Sword is interesting to me. It's a beautiful triple fullered type XX with a zigzaggy crossguard, comparable to this sword.
It's a heavy beater of a thing (4.5 lbs ~ 2 kg), which is why I bought it, I just wanted something that could withstand a good whack.
Ohhh yeah, classic Shadiversity video! A good thing to watch at 6 in the morning

Babe wake up, Shad just posted a new sword review
Back in the 1990s, at least in the US, you couldn’t sell a sword or a knife over a certain length with a sharpened edge. My ex used to occasionally make swords as a hobby.
Your review came at a great time Shad, I just preordered this exact model from Kult of Athena so I’ll be looking forward to it when it comes in.
It’s always nice to see you do these videos Shad, It’s always great to see you do what you know best.
Fun fact:
In romanian folklore, "Balaur" is a dragon that breaths fire out of it's nose. Represented in the artwork as a thick boy. Also a dinosaur that was discovered here that was smallish in stature and chubby in build was named Balaur Bondoc
It might seem odd, but what draws me to this sword in particular is the handle and cross guard. I don't know what it is about it, but it's so eye catching to me.
Could you do a video about swordfighting in other cultures? Would love to see you talk about some of the more obscure ones that people usually don't talk about much on youtube
Yeah. Africa does not get nearly enough attention.
I believe Skallagrim did a comparison between European and Japanese styles of swordfighting and (not so) shockingly it turns out that most of the fundamentals are the same. I expect that to be the same across multiple cultures, because there's really only so many ways you can swing "a stick" effectively.
@@totallynuts7595 No like, I mean ones that are pretty different like Angampora, Krabee krabong, and other ones like Zulu stick fighting
A lotta channels like this 1, Scholagladiatoria, and Skallagrim actually HAVE covered these other weapons. Knock yourself out! I love their non-european or asian videos just as much! You'll definitely find effective things you've never seen before
Love this style of video Shad, very informative and engaging over all!
thanks for such an in depth video. im impressed with the newer balaur swords! ive just ordered a 15th century arming sword from the Kult and cant wait to see what kind of quality i end up with 😊

Just so many things that can go wrong and the skill of the user and how they are at that moment are the biggest factors. Nice looking sword style and size.
Yes, Shad should do more of these. ALSO! I love the billowing sleeves.
Great review, really nice sword, expecially for the price. I love that blade profile.
We need Shad to reach to the weapons from RWBY, one of two things will happen he’ll ether love the weapons or his brain will melt; and for those who don’t know what RWBY is 3 words sniper rifle scythe
i have a feeling his review would be very similar Skallagrim's video on it. Although we might as well have it be all the weapons so we can get the joy from him reviewing the gun-chucks

Awesome video shad, I hope all goes well and u can deal with your heath issues. Loved this video love to see more of these sort of vids.
It's nice to see another sword review.
I like the sound effect that was added when shad was cutting the bottles. So nice
25:15 - AHA! I see what's happening. It's so flexible at the tip that the moment you strike past the center of mass of the blade it just starts a-wobblin'.
This is a beautiful sword and I love the profile so much, love seeing that stuff in an affordable range has good quality
Glad you were able to review such a beautiful sword.
I like your sword reviews. Tough but fair. Take care.
Hey Shad! I hope you’re doing okay man
A really great and detailed review! :) Thank you!
Nice shirt! Good to see you taking care of yourself.
Shad, have you seen there is a sword made specifically for splitting wood? 😁 it looks awesome fun
The viking wood splitter. Something to check out on the shadlands
Always love hearing people cut in slow-mo because their yells turn into lion roars & bear growls 😂
i had thought balur arms would be like deepeka and have quality issues... perhaps i was wrong, i just thought for the price it was too good to be true and from everyone i talked to said they were cheaply made. although this kinda disproves that.
I received a spearhead from Balaur Arms with a damascus core a little over two weeks ago, and it looks like the only thing holding the core to the edge is solder. There are big blotches that are almost certainly welds to fill the gaps between core and edge that look so bad I actually put a little alcohol on it to check if it was paint. The edges are completely dull, there is visible scale left on parts of the blade, and there is a literal hole through the center of the blade that you can see straight through, which they somehow missed during the patch job with the welder despite it being directly next to the blotches. And on a lesser note, the socket was filled to the brim with dead red spiders from being left in storage for a long time.
The key word here appears to be “consistency.”
The 5 most recent balaur arms sword models were made by lk chen and his people who specialize in functional and affordable Chinese weapons and he pumps out consistently good blades, all the issues with this specific blade are specific to pretty much all lk chen blades, theyre well made tough quality steel they just need a little sharpening kus they can't really ship razor sharp blades over a certain size from china but lk chen has a very good reputation, before balaur outsourced production to an unreputable Indian company then to windlass which is decent but their quality control isn't great, lk chen is better on all fronts so these new models should be awsome besides the edge which they make close enough to sharp that you wouldn't need to spend more than a minute or two on a stone and won't have any noticeable secondary bevel unless you put one on yourself
This reminded me of Blackfyre from HotD. Awesome video as always shad!
Can't wait for my Principe. Love the review Shad
I really like this type of sword, and preordered one. Hope they start shipping in early March rather than later in the month. GIMEE! GIMEE! GIMEE!
Nice video, good to see you
Good to see you out doing some cutting tests. Maybe use sand bags instead of clamps.
About the scabbard steel folds rubbing against the edge, maybe take a dremel with very small tip and grind at an angle so that there is only wood that the edge can touch.
Nice blade man beautiful made weapon i find your channel very interesting thanks you 👍
Great video! Beautiful sword.
Just kinda disappointed that we didn't get to see how well it can cut after sharpening and all. Was looking forward to it.
Aside, Shad you look great man. Hope your health continues to improve.
Shad must be one of the few beacons left in the world trying to restore faith in humanity.
This has made me once again made me try to find a goedendag that I could convince myself I could justify buying but I once again did not succeed at doing so but keep up the great content and that is a beautiful blade.
I love the triangular look. Broad base, straight taper, diamond cross section. I wonder what it would look like taken to the extreme, say a 4-5 inch wide base, 40 inch blade, but one handed grip.
The sword looks very beautiful. So triangular. And the red on it mskes it look so good
Thank you for converting kilos to freedom units. I knew 1.5 would be a little over 3.25lbs but I wasn't sure by how much without a calculator.
Damned fine review.
Want to see more sword reviews 👍 I Fricking Love IT! ;)
I swear with God as my witness that I didn't skip the beginning with all the sword typology and the other minutiae, I watched the whole video because you legitimately made it all interesting! Calling any parts of your videos on your entire channel superfluous is oxymoronic, because it's all rather superlative! You make me want this sword so badly lol, but my wallet's still recovering from buying one of the langesmessers that Skallagrim recommended.😂
Just got off work amd saw this treat. ^-^ good morning to me!
I would love to see a video or even a short with this beauty all sharpened up.
I love the Alexandria style swords. Albion is presently making my "Baron" sword. When I get it, this will be my next weapon.

Shad,
Consider making a

Shad I LOVE YOUR CONTENT, IM A TOTAL NERD AT HEART
Love the shirt, would like an episode on what to think about when making an medieval outfit.
I would definitely recommend "Living Anachronism" here on youtube for that.
He was a wonderful series on how to put an outfit together, from noob larp to really authentic looking.
When you posted the preview pics of this sword I had asked who made it as I didn't recognize it. Oh... it's on pre-order no wonder I did not know it 😂
Shad. I love your content! I enjoyed this video, still a thumbs up from me. HOWEVER: That second hand held angle was so disorienting! Please don't do that in future videos. Much love from the states! Can't wait for your next video! Cheers from the States!
Other than the cutting test I was just focused on the Anduril sword in the background, hopefully Shad will be reviewing that sword in a future video.
Hey Shad, you’ve been crushing it on FNT. Great stuff. I was watching you’re channel before you were that cool, though. 😁
Honestly surprised you didn't mention the Oakeshott typology and Alexandria style longsword stuff when you guys were reviewing HOTD as Blackfyre (Viserys' sword at the time, more prominently Aegon the Conquerer's) is a sexy Type 18c!
I wanted to ask, what is the average handle width for swords? I have a cool sword design I thought of, and I want to try drawing it in real scale, so it would be a great help if you could answer
That is definitely a late medieval warsword. I have always looked at the XVIIIc as the warsword version of the XVIII oakeshott typology, and the XVIIIb as the longsword, although I am aware that I am over simplifying it. I wonder how wide a blade has to be to fit into the XVIIIc catergory, always assumed over 2 inches at the guard followed by the tapering blade profile.
yep, over 2 inches wide at the base qualifies as 18c for that type, following that everything else is in proportion.
@@MizraimEvans That's what I gathered from my research into the XVIIIc. Cheers.
I suggest a Tyranth section in the destructive testing against wood.
The thing I love most: *shads happy sword noises*
Great review Shad! I've been eyeing this sword since I first saw it on KOA about a month ago. Looks like a fantastic sword for the price point! The metal... Locket? Throat? I'm not sure what its called lol. On the scabbard is a bit of a concern though. I wonder how hard it would be to get that piece off the scabbard. I'm a handy guy and I think I could probably modify it enough with a file or Dremel to where it wont rub on the blade when sheathing and unsheathing the sword. That is, if I can get it off without destroying the scabbard. I hope Balaur Arms takes heed of that bit of criticism from you and maybe modifies the design a bit so it doesn't do that for future iterations. Because that is a really good observation/concern about that scabbard! I wonder how this sword looks and feels compared to Ronin Katana's version of the Alexandria. The Medieval Warsword - Euro Model #3. They are of the same typology and really close in price. As of right now on KOA the Ronin Katana Medieval Warsword - Euro Model #3 is $450. I'm kind of torn on which one, between these two, I want to purchase!! Arrrrgghhhhh!! I HATE being so indecisive!! I'll probably end up buying both of them eventually, but I'm not sure which one to get first! Comparing those two sword would make for a really good comparison video in my opinion! Wink. Wink. Wink. Nudge. Nudge. Nudge... *cough do it please! cough* Hahahaha!
Have you put all of your swords in the Oakeshott configuration as a display? That would be a sick Short if you haven't.
watching this the 2nd time while eating =) beautiful sword. i wonder if the manufacturer reiterated on the sword sheathe after this video.

That sword looks great!
Does the pommel unscrew for ending your enemy properly?
I definitely wouldn’t say those upwards cuts were due to the edge. Those suckers can be tough to get right sometimes! I tend to find them a bit easier to do at a slightly steeper angle.
