- Smiling Friends Season 2 Episode 1 introduced us to Gwimbly, the abandoned video game mascot. After this new Smiling Friends episode aired on Adult Swim, fans were quick to turn Gwimbly into a real character that existed all throughout modern video game history. Remember when Gwimbly got DLC in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii? I 'member.

It's no wonder everyone's obsessed with Gwimbly. A PS1 era game character who hasn't had a game in over a decade from a company that refuses to do anything with it? We've all had a favorite game like that at some point.

I'm so damn glad we're finally getting season 2 of Smiling Friends.
The two year hiatus was absolutely DREADFUL.
They probably spent 1/8 of that time making the 3D assets.

There was the Christmas episode, and the Brazil episode so not really a two year hiatus. It just takes time to make episodes of a show with Gumball-esque mixed media.

Funnily enough, this seems to further support the episode's theme of letting forgotten characters have their chance to shine. Hell, it's even what Adult Swim is built on in the first place, reusing Hanna Barbera characters from the 60s for their shows, because they had the rights!

I'm surprised that Smiling Friends made homage to the line of video game mascots outside of Mario and Sonic with Gwimbly. With the likes of Gex, Bubsy, Earthworm Jim, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dargon, and many more. Good job, Smiling Friends.

I love the weird and uncanny animation styles they incorporate into this show. It’s like what Flapjack and Courage the Cowardly Dog did, but now it’s coming back to make us uncomfortable in adulthood instead of childhood.
I think TAWOG did it best in a kid's show. More than just easter eggs or cameos, but actual main characters in wildly differing styles

I remember Gwimbly as the first DLC in smash bros, his frame data was insane and has no reason to be this overpowered, but the CEO didn't want his ip for any next games from the franchise and Gwimbly was sadly never to be seen again

Seriously, children’s shows have the most hellish fandoms (Bluey, Loud House, etc.), but shows like Breaking Bad are chill.

It's actually pretty cool that gwimbly is supposed to be a Smash Bros Brawl character, hat part I had no idea not to mention he had his own games that's pretty damn cool.
I remember when Gwimbly was slated to do that crossover with Crash Bandicoot and Spyro in the canceled PS1 title, "Spryo, Crash and Gwimbly in Greatest Heroes All-Out Defense Force", where they had to stop Ripto, Dr. Neo Cortex and Count Gruxia from opening up the demon realm and releasing the darkness upon the world (in the English localization, this would've been changed to your garden variety "take over the world plot"), but the game got canceled after Insane Ground Breaking Games was bought by Nintendo, similar to how Rareware got bought by Microsoft from Nintendo.
This episode is such a brilliant takedown of all these game companies that just sit on iconic IPs.
Banjo, Rayman, Conker, Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, Castlevania, F-Zero, etc. are all franchises that are long overdue for new entries, but their owners refuse to do anything with them. At least Banjo and Castlevania made it into Smash

What makes Gwimbly a great character is that he is a representation of Video game series like Banjo Kazooie, Mother/Earthbound series, Fzero, Metal Gear, Castlevania, Rayman and more don’t get any new game for years in their respective companies and Video games companies poorly treated them, as a big gamer myself this is so accurate.
I'm glad you mentioned Rayman, because he looks like a character who'd have been in Rayman 2: The Great Escape

I used to play gwimbly adventures all the time so many memories of coming home from school in the 90s and collecting all the creamed corn cans and shooting the iconic gwimbly gun.

Not alot of people actually know this but Gwimbly 3D was like the 4th game in the series. Thr original was called Gwimble and was kinda a cult classic on the NES. Although the character design changed alot bewteen then and the critically acclaimed Gwimbly 3D so it's a bit of lost knowledge. Also if I remember correctly his little sidekick wasn't a thing until Gwimbly 3D cuz they wanted to have a partner that could relay story to the player.
Man I love those games. Wish they'd make a new one!

Hoopolee did a great job animating this lovable throwback to the early PS1 days. I hope we get a full game featuring this guy.
Gotta give love to Hoolopee, the guy who animated Gwimbly, and has plenty of other PS1 style animations under his belt on his own CZcams channel, including 2 Pipes, which features a cameo from Zach as well!
