The best part of the whole show for me was that the Germans in general (not only Otto) were shown just to be normal people forced to go to war. Even Colonel von Krieger wasn't a bad guy, he was just someone who did his job and wasn't soaked into Nazi propaganda by the way he treats the people in the town. Also as a native German speaker, the Germans actually spoke real German and had actual German accents. The Germans actually said swear words too for example the Colonel constantly says scheiße which means shit and it was always so fucking funny whenever he said Scheisse or Das ist Sabotage
My dad and I watched it a few months ago and really loved it. Although I remember him saying he didn't think it was necessarily a childrens show. Probably because of the appearance of swastikas and some of the off-screen death scenes.
@@emperor_napoleon Its really saying something when a supposed ww2 childrens show is willing to show Nazi imagery yet AAA M-rated WW2 video games censor it.

@@CluelessSoldier-0669Surprised you didn't mention the Tiger appearing as soon as the town was occupied considering it happened soon after the Fall of France.
Me too I think I started watching it when I was like eight years old or something in like after when I watched it I loved it so much I kept watching it and they drawing the characters and like now at 10 years old I’m kind of getting back to the long, long holiday
Best cartoon for a child. Despite having some dark scenes, it’s best to teach the children about the past and the heroes of ww2, at least better than some of the other cartoons teaching them some bad stuff
I agree, schools very rarely touch on serious things like war unless it has a lot to do with local history (or at least the schools in my country). And WWII is completely ignored.
It also shows it in a nuanced way that's good for kids & adults. The Germans aren't monsters and the Partisans aren't paragons. Mr. Herpin opposes the occupation & later the poor treatment of Jews but otherwise seems to support the Vichy government & Petain, and has next to no issue involving literal children in the resistance. Oberst vonKrieger is effectively walking a tightrope where he can't be too lax but refuses to be outright cruel toward the villagers - his integrity ultimately winning out as he downgrades the orders he passes along from his General to his men leading into the show's climax. Every character is written as a believably real person of the time.
Honestly This show and OTGW (Over the Garden Wall) is what I want to see more of in Cartoons. Miniseries is one of the most excellent idea for cartoons and These shows really show the potential of its.
A lot of French kids watched this show because teachers would show it to us when we were learning about WW2 back in elementary school. The cartoon was also regularly available on France 5 for free
plus, it does the show don't tell thing in film and show and i love how some WW2 some German is not fully evil they were told to, plus i like how we never see blood, but we know that they died by seeing gunshot offscreen or seeing their body on the ground, we don't need the bullet hole we need to see the body on the ground lifeless to know that this character is lifeless
The author, Émile Bravo has also done a "re-imagination" of Spirou (or Robbedoes in Dutch), with the first comic starting in 1939 Brussels, where the Danzig issue is being discussed and the follow-up comics focus on him and Fantasio try to survive the war (with several focusses, including Collaboration vs. Resistance, the deportation of the Jewish communities,...) The artstyle is very similar to The Long Long Holiday, with the exception being that most German and Collaborationist members having some sort of shadow on them. Being a huge WW2 buff, a fan of animated shows and movies and a huge Francophile, I just needed to watch 'The Long Long Holiday'.
