Thank you for making this video. This is by far *THE* clearest reference of specifically where the alignment marks are, and the chain link marks.
You're welcome...Cheers mate,
I would agree!
thanks for making this video! I had seen it before but I looked it up again as I was setting my chains up yesterday just to make sure I was doing it right. Got er all together and she's back up and running pretty again today! Thanks again!
Glad it helped...Cheers mate.
Easy when you know how. Nice job. Just a point of interest, I never knew chains had timing links until I checked my Nuffield last year. (Did a video of that). I've fitted dozens while reconing engines in the 70s. Mainly Mk1 Cortina etc and Minis A and B series. Also Vauxhalls of the same era. Yet my Nuffield engine is 1953. Never too old to learn, and you only learn the first time you do it.
Bright or dark links make it much easier Malc...Yep I've learnt enough about these and hope I don't ever have the pleasure again.
Thanks Zig have a managed to do my v6 motor from scratch now it's back on track.l am not a mechanic but l fixed my motor through your instructions, you a the boss
That's great to hear my friend...Congratulations and you're welcome..Cheers.
Was your engine off time?
Zig, you are an artist for sure....can't wait to see it in and running. CYL Pal.
Thanks Larry...Should be a runner soon.
Always a cliffhanger. I'll be looking for the next video mate. Have a good week Ziggy
Thanks Ronnie...Fingers crossed it will be running tomorrow or real close to it.
It's quality work like this that proves you are the master. Good job 👍
Aw shucks Badger...Cheers mate.
Love your videos no one explains things like this or atleast no one I've found.
Now that ive learnt almost everything I find your channel, wish I'd found channels like yours years ago.
I bet many will learn a thing or two from you.
Now one of my favourite channels.
Than you sir.
When number 1 cylinder is up mirroring each other, indicating TDC, the mark on the crankshaft or keyway does not align. How would I get those to align?
I like your explanation, it's very clear. Keep it up
Thank you Anthony....Cheers mate.
At 4:57 i'm sure that was supposed to be referencing cylinder 4 not 6. It's a decent video, keep it up here thanks :)
yes
Al idioma no le entendi nada , pero estubo muy bien señalado , todas las marcas , excelente , gracias por el video.
Thank you.
I really like your explanation,
thanks.
You are welcome!
tHanks....This video is clear and easy to follow. Merci Buckets!
You're welcome!
This motor is like a jigsaw puzzle. LOL, a lot of areas where you can go wrong. Getting closer.
Sure is a challenge...Gotta pay real good attention to this one..
Chuck it in the hole eh :) They did a nice job of all them locating points for the chain.
Thankfully..Lining up all the stuff is a tricky enough thing but with no ID markings it would be real tough...BTW It's in the hole...No action shots sorry Steve.
Thank you loads for your clear and thorough explanation
All good mate.
A lot different setup from the older Holdens Mate. Nice job !
Gimme an old Holden any day Lloyd...Cheers mate.
You must be famous for fixing the most complicated jobs in all of OZ!
Not the kind of famous I was looking for...Thanks Steve.
The GM HFV6 is more complex than this.
👍 thanks Zig
I don’t think I’ll ever buy a V6 again, farrrk, nightmarish inside 😬
You sure don't want to buy one of these...Cheers Simon.
Great one point video. Good work
Thank you! 😊
Nice work Zig, nearly there!
Thank you.
NICE!!!! On Toyotas we have to unlock the VVTI gear before it`s installed or the pin will bind and kick a VVTI code
Cheers Ant..What engine is that for mate.?..Hopefully I won't need to remember that..lol
I like that
Cheers mate.
How much should a job like this cost with engine inside of the car, the more or less Average price not Exact.
Changing Everything you should be changing when doing the timing chain of course.
The best part of $1500.
I’m doing this job right now. But on the 3.5L
It's a bunch of fun..
@@ziggassedup😂 oh I know I can’t think of anything else I’d rather be doing… lol. at least you had the option of taking the motor out and getting to it, hell I have the entire left side of the Motor apart just to get the timing cover off.
I took the main crankshaft sprocket off because I wanted to replace the oil pump. I had already tdc removed the chain and when I was trying to take the sproket out, the crankshaft rod moved just a little bit clockwise, does it matter anny in relation to the tdc? Any input will really help. Thanks.
Can't you turn the crank back to TDC.?...The cams are set using the marks and dots on the chain and gears so make sure they all line up.
Nice work. I got to see ya "Chuck it in the hole" lol
I chucked it in today Terry but no action shots...Sorry.
Hey man do you take the pins of the top tensioners as you go or take all of them at the same time
It doesn't matter what order...Cheers mate.
Great work Zig and I can only assume that the complicated jobs always goes to you in the shop. 😀👍
Unfortunately yes as I'm the only mechanic in the place...Cheers mate.
@@ziggassedup} p
Why do these chains wear out at 100k? Is there an oil issue not lubricating the chain?
Not sure mate...Bad design maybe.?
Why didn't you actually show how you put the chain and gears on. I need to know how to get the chain past the tensioner without taking the cam covers off and listening the tensioner bolts up. That's the only way I can see being able to get the chain past the tensioner even with it fully compressed mine has no room to pass over the lip on the tensioner foot.
That is not possible.
Good info but one correction, your pointing at cylinder 4 and saying cylinder 6.
Cheers mate ...Yeah I know but a one take shot and not much I can do now...I'd just finished caming a 350...You know 1&6 are a TDC at the same time...My bad.
Thank you sir! I I'm doing one right now and my manual is a little old.
Came here looking for this comment
Hi there so I have a question ple
So how long time or miles should be change it ple .thanks
There is no set tine or miles period for chain replacement.
Nice explanation, thanks.
You are welcome!
Hey man I’m trying to do my timing chain but I was wondering do I have to drop the motor? Ik this video is old hoping you could help thanks
No but it's a bit of a struggle...Cheers Christopher.
Can you guys get service manuals? Been trying to get a manual for a Nissan Pathfinder. No luck at Nissan. Seems Alldata has it locked up. Keep Rocking it out Down Under!!!
try
www.allcarmanuals.com
+chefmen101 Sorry dude but thats a nothing burger. No such thing as a free lunch. We have tried those kind of free manuals. No diagnostic information, no wiring diagrams, no check engine trouble charts. If it's free you get NO useful information. But thanks for your help. Keep Rocking!!!
I used an online Nissan manual to find out torque settings...I looked through the whole thing and it's very detailed. boredmder.com/FSMs/Nissan/Pathfinder/2008/EM.pdf Try this..Cheers Pat.
rockin along, good job.................tony
We're getting there..Cheers Tony.
On the cam caps, did you put rtv in both the small channels, one has a funnel shape near the end. Or did u only put rtv in the outter one? Thank u!
Just a touch in the corners is always good.
Sounds good.. Do u see many issues with the vq40 oil galley gaskets?
Typically what does the job run out of your shop parts and labor? Be interesting to compare the USA vs European costs. Thanks
In this job we had the heads serviced as well as a new set of piston rings and main and big end bearings and the timing chains and guides...I think it came to $5500.
@@ziggassedup Thanks, I will see what I can come up with
Got dan its timing chain time !
Yay.
What happens if you take the 4 bolts off the intake cam sprocket? They say not to touch those bolts and i took them out?
You'll most likely bugger up the VCT stuff.
Hello from Sunny California!
I need your input. I’m ready to install new Timing Chains, Tensioners, Guide and Gears.
I put the engine at TDC. Only problem is Right Cam Gears are off by 2-3 teeth.
Is it okay when I install all the new components to adjust everything to align with cam sprocket markings to the timing cover markings?
Or just leave it alone and use the exact same current position?
G'day from downunder....Line up the markings like I showed...Cheers mate..
@@ziggassedup thanks Brother! Will do. Greatly appreciate your speedy response.👍
What's the part number to the black disc seals in the timing cover above the cam tensioners?
Sorry I can't help you there...the seals came in the engine gasket set.
do you know where i can get a lockout for the cams?
Sorry no.
Can you tell me, do I have to take the timing chain cover off to replace the oil pump. Thanks.
Yes...The oil pump is attached to the timing cover.
excelent
Cheers.
Roger That.
Great video! May you be able to help me out I removed cams off of my 4.0 and they got mixed I want to be sure I place them back properly in the correct order
Not exactly sure about that sorry.
So great man
Cheers.
surely u replaced the water pump?
Pretty sure we did...Cheers.
Good job Zig!
Thanks Tush.
at 0.50, you have your 2 blue links aligned with the 2 round dots for the passenger side camshaft. at 1.33, you have your 2 blue links aligned with the 2 oval marks for the driver side. how can your camshafts be aligned if you put the chains onto different marks?
Because that's the way the Nissan manual says to set it up.
I see. thanks
Thank you realy useful comment ! I did not see this ! good observation .
Thats good to see the two oval links lined up bc online it just says to line up the punched dots but they wouldnt lol
Hello and good afternoon, I am just about to do the timing chains on my 350z after the front pulley fractured and threw out the woodruff key into space, got a new crankshaft sprocket and woodruff key, but when I push the crankshaft sprocket home over the keyway there's not much woodruff key to drive the sprocket, and I am thinking all that pressure on that very short length of the key to drive everything, is this correct, if so it's a bad design, I would appreciate your help and advice, cheers, by the way keep up the good work with the videos 👍
Is it a genuine Nissan key.?..I'd have to see what you have to advise you any further.
@@ziggassedup Hi, thank you for your reply, yes a genuine key part number 0092651600, confirmed the correct one by nissan dealership, I appreciate your help, 👍
cool. no cam bearings? i've never seen the double over head valves but assume there is bearings there too. and worn like the mains. those rubber gaskets coming from china?
No alloy OHC's run cam bearings..No oil pressure and the whole thing is toast...Could be Chinese.
ahh ok. ty
@@ziggassedup hi.r u using OEM parts or aftermarket. If aftermarket which brand. any information will b appreciated.
@@slavikonufriychuk3485 Aftermarket...Sorry I don't recall the brand.
Hey where'd you get that cam gear locker? The ones I find go in between the sprockets and would have no hope getting it out post assembly.
I didn't use cam locks.
How did you stop the left side bank from rolling off alignment, is the chain tensioner and cam caps enough to hold it in place? I'm in the process of doing this after 3 other people pulled it apart, mine are like mentioned before 3 tooth off both intake and exh and I figured I'd put the pulleys and chains on and then turn it back to alignment those 3 teeth but assumed it'd roll back off TDC moment I let go of it
@@benjaminfrost2003 To memory I think I just turned the cam to line up with the link when I was up to that part.
Is this a free running motor? I have a mate who says that the mechanic reckons the timing chain has come off and may have twisted the camshaft. Thanks
No it's not a free spinner...I doubt the chain has come off and twisted a camshaft but it is possible the chains have stretched and the guides and tensioner pads have worn out resulting in a slipped chain.
@@ziggassedup cheers. So possibly bent valves?
@@Discoworx Yes sir.
Educational 💯 made since to me
Good.

Sorry I can't help you there.
Hello, what was the reason/ symptoms and mileage for the work done?... mine has a rattling on cold starts only 144k
This blew excessive smoke...It had 160k and everything was warn out.
Mine rattles on cold starts too at 120k. Did you end up replacing yours hotdogsoltero571?
Hi im working on this style of engine. I'm replacing the timing chain and tensioner but I made the mistake of loosening the left vvt sprocket and now when I put it back, it is sitting a little crooked. I can't figure out what I did wrong
Sorry mate I've not had that problem.
good job zig ..
Cheers Shawn.
Do you have to cycle engine after chains are on??
No...
Can you do this on my 2005 Nissan Pathfinder? It has the same engine...
Yes I could but it's very time consuming and I have many other vehicles to work on at the moment..Sorry.
hello, I want to know what size are the lubrication ring or the head?
Sorry I don't have that information...All seals came in a gasket/seal kit...I'm sure Nissan would be able to tell you...I can say that they are square shoulder rings no round "O" rings
O rings
Crikey!
Indeed.
So much easier with the engine out but I shall keep working in my hole
Good luck!
Nice work sir :)
Thank you..I try.
What was the torque specs for the camshaft sprocket bolts?
Sorry I don't recall...I found the specs by google....I think I looked up VQ40DE engine specifications and found a Nissan manual.
Thanks for the reply!! Been looking and I can’t seem to find it. Thanks again, good video.
Fantastic explanations.
Thank you.
YOU DONT SHOW HOW TO LINE UP THE LEFT SIDE CAM SPROCKETS
Both sides line up the same. Line up the marks just the same.
that's vq35 I don't use the default timing marks I use my own
No it's a VQ40 not a 3.5.
@@ziggassedup ok but timing is same I guess
Cool
Cheers Terry.
4:54 are you sure that's cylinder 6? Looks like cylinder 4 to me
Yes it is #4...
hi mate, do you recommend changing the two secondary chain tensioners?
Absolutely a must.
@@ziggassedup Thank You!
Thanks bro 👍
No problem 👍
How to Remove Water pump
Strip it down to this point and remove the pump...Not easy by any means.
Seen a video where they remove access panels on the timing cover over tensioner and water pump. Once the chain is loose they use 2 long bolts to get the water pump out.
Coming together mate, soon be out of your hair.
Thankfully...Cheers Tim.
I need your assistance
What can I do for you.?
you in qld at all
Nah mate...NSW

Sorry.
Nice camera fling all over an can't seen anything
Cheers mate. You seem to be the only person with that problem.

Cheers CJ.
compared to that, doing a Subaru engine is easy.
It is pretty involved...Cheers mate.
Fuck it im selling it.
Not a bad idea.
@@ziggassedup and shes at 280k miles I think its time to let her go
G0k
Why did you remove the engine?
It needed piston tings.
