Is It OK To Run Through Pain? | How Much Pain Is Too Much Pain

  • We have all heard the old “If it isn’t hurting, it isn’t working” mantra when it comes to running, but just how outdated is it?
Fortunately, it feels like most runners understand that pushing through the pain isn’t always the answer. But how do we know when a niggle or injury would benefit from a break from running?
Today, Manni and Sarah are going to talk you through when it’s time to, temporarily, hang up those running shoes.
How have you dealt with injury or an extended period where you haven't been able to run? Are there any personal warning signs you now recognise when your body is telling you that it's time to take it easy?
Let us know in the comments below. 👇🏻

I had a fracture and severe deep tissue damage to my ankle. If I hadn't worn compression socks during my run, I know the swelling would have beenuch worse than it was already. I couldn't walk on it for 3 months, then I slowly walked with it using crutches and a boot. It was the most painful injury I have ever had.

Last year I had a tibial stress fracture and it was a really hard time for me - no running for 6 months... But TRC kept my spirits high - I was watching your every video on you tube and I managed to stay in shape by doing numerous "legless" workouts. I found many of them on you tube - you can even do cardio while sitting on a chair! :)

New runner here! Pain more than injury, but I had to take 2 weeks off after weeks 3, 7 and 8 of C25K due to knee bursitis.
RICE & some supports helped temporarily, as did improving form, but it was starting the Knees Over Toes guy's programme that seemed to sort it out for good.
I'd like to stop using the supports soon but I'm a bit nervous about whether that's the right thing to do - can we get a video on supports please? 🙏 :)

Yes currently. So I’ve been running for nearly 4 years with no major issues till about 5 weeks ago I felt pain in my right shin after a run. Rested for for a few days, then ran and it hurt. Rested for a week, then ran and it hurt. Rested for two weeks, ran again and it hurt. Then I started getting pain in my lower back, top of thighs and bottom cheek (😳). Finally got to the doctors, on painkillers, anti inflammatory tablets. Physio says my quads, hips and hamstrings are all way to stiff for a 43 year old. Also Got some stretching exercises to do and see if that helps. Just waiting on x rays next to see what’s going on.🧐

    Just. Let it. Heal.
I’ve been dealing with Achilles tendinitis in my left foot since last August. I’ve been telling myself “oh it’s not that bad” and run anyway. Later the same day I look like an old man shuffling my feet and it takes a couple of days to feel remotely normal then I do it all over again. Last week I just got sick of it and took a week off and it has helped immensely. Sometimes you simply have to let your body heal.

Running my first long race (round the lakes 27km) years ago, I felt a sharp pain on the outside of my foot at the 22-23 km mark. Wanted to stop but my running buddy egged me on as there were only a few kms left. Managed to finish albeit in a world of pain. Turned out to be a stress fracture! I've come a long way since then and now I always listen to my body. Just finished a half marathon today actually, injury free!

I had knee pain and was told that, in my case, it was due to my very poor core strength (aka none) so my form was affected and my knees were taking on too much. Not sure how common that is, but something else to add just in case another beginner runner with a weak core sees this! 😊

This is my personal story. I was active as a track athlete into my early 20's.Started cycyling late 20's. Mid 40's started gym for the first time. I had a problem with one of my knees didnt kmow what it was. After some research I started to take glucosamine sulphate. Within 2 months i no longer had any problems. I no longer take the supplement and I am ok. But, our body sometimes does not produce certain things it needs so we have to supplement.

I’ve recently returned to running following a stress fracture to my left inferior and posterior pubic ramus. I was running in my local half marathon last October and only managed around 11k before pain prevented me from going any further.
A visit to my local A&E the following day diagnosed my injury and also discovered an identical older injury on the opposite side!!
What I had thought was a pulled muscle earlier in the year was actually a fracture!!
I had simply rested for a few weeks and then resumed my usual activities, without seeking advice.
Thankfully I’ve had all the appropriate tests and the is no medical reason for either injuries, turns out I’m probably just incredibly unlucky!! It’s been a long, painful, frustrating recovery, but I’m really pleased to report I ran my first post injury 10K a couple of weeks ago and it felt great 👍🏻
Moral is, listen to your body and definitely get any pains and injuries checked out by a medical professional, so receive appropriate advice and treatment to prevent further problems later on 😊

I came back to running after 30+ years off (bike vs car incident + chronic running pain during recovery) a couple years ago. When I injured my gastrocnemius, a friend who had recently become a Physiotherapist recommended PEACE & LOVE philosophy instead of the RICE I had grown up with. She was right, things seem to heal and recover quicker, which is kind of important for us in the over 50 crowd. It got me through my first non-virtual marathon last weekend (on my birthday, 54, bib# 54, and placed 4th in the men's M50... lots of 54 action going on, lol)

New runners need to be aware that muscles develop faster than the rest of the legs can cope with. This is why a lot of new runners sprain ligaments or get tendon problems. The rest of their legs haven't yet caught up with their new found muscle strength.

This was so helpful and timely for me. I haven't had an injury since 2019 when I trained for a full marathon. This pain recently started up again (just on Friday of last week). My physio last time told me it appeared to be an overuse injury (pain in the heel) and was originating from a tight calf muscle. Keeping in mind that I have already experienced this before, I was still very scared when it happened again that I really hurt myself badly and that it would keep me from running. I stopped for a few days and rested - as I was told to do last time as well. This morning I watched this video and it reminded me of the jumping test to check on my pain. So far it seems to be gone! I will get out and do a very gentle, short test run later today. I love this channel for all of the awesome information that it provides to runners! Thank you!

After having two stress fractures simultaneously (same foot) last year, I saw how important is to fix imbalances. Tried to come back a bit too early and realized I my gait was completely asimmetric.
In my case, biking with clip-on shoes helped a lot, since you may exert force not only in the down stroke, but all around, working quads, hip flexors, etc.

Great video Manny and Sarah. Timely advice. I am dealing with either a back or hip issue. It doesn't hurt to walk but is definitely aggravated with downhill running. I've tried to train through it but that doesn't seem to be working. I took a week off and it isn't much better. I am not sure what I did to it, but definitely a sharp muscular pain where the glute, hip and back meet. Tough one to deal with. Hopefully some more down time will help. I haven't seen a doctor for it but I've been dealing with it for the better part of a month.

Timely info coming out of the first marathons of 2022. I, myself, have just developed a bit of extensor tendinitis, likely a joint consequence of not enough rest post-Manchester Marathon and lacing up too tightly. That's easily a week off for me. In the meantime, I'm keeping elevated as much as I can, using a compression sock at points throughout the day, and trying a bit of cold contrast therapy to get the blood moving. Fingers crossed I'll be back on both feet and making my usual efforts in a week or two.

I have foot pain all the time, running, walking. Been to 2 private podiatrists and an NHS podiatrist for a scan. Thought it was neuroma but the scans showed nothing, and the NHS podiatrist lost interest after the first steroid injection. Since then I'm just running with pain and damaged nerves and trying to manage it myself through better/correctly fitting shoes. One thing I have noticed, when I have a cold virus, the pain in my feet gets worse, along with other areas of damage I know I gave (neck, lower right leg), but even the doctors seem disinterested in investigating anything. Got back to running distance now, just have to live with the pain.

Every few months I keep having issues with my gastrocnemius muscle tightening up and forcing me to have to stop running for a week. I am currently training for my second half marathon and it is just so frustrating when I feel really good then suddenly my calf is tight and sore. Last year I learned my bodies limit in terms of running too many days consecutively and I have been good about not pushing it but this just keeps happening. In the future do I need to prioritize strengthening my gastrocnemius to avoid this?

  • @marc-antoinepelletier4039

What is a knee that lock ? (sorry English isn't my first language)
Is it that it can't bend anymore or is it if it clicks ? (again not sure of the term) When the joint clash and does a tick sound...
I have regularly a right knee that pops when idle for a long period (old skateboard injury) but since I run I tend to have the left one clicking also after a long run. (first time I did a 10k, 15k etc...) I does click after the run for several hours (not persistently only 2 or 3 times a day) but it can last for 2 to 3 days depending on the effort I made. It doesn't causes any pain. It clicks reset in position and usually I feel better after the pop than before. Am I in danger ? hahaha
thanks again for those beautiful tips !

Is 6 months of rest after a stress fracture enough?

Hi, have 2 quick questions for Manny 🙏🏼. First question is, at the start of my long runs I usually get pain in both my calves, like they go rock hard and it hurts to run on but it only lasts for around 2km then goes and I forget about it 🤣. Is there anything I can do to stop them from hurting at all? Second question, again on my long runs the underneath of my right foot right on the ball of my foot starts really hurting, however, a couple km’s later, that pain too goes. Normally by 40/50% of my way through the long runs my pains clear up and I feel alright 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

A simple solution might be a warm up, if you're not doing any. I do the one the girls in the faster 5k in 8 weeks learned so my legs are warm before going out the door. This takes 5 minutes but eases your body into running instead of jerk starting it.
The foot might be your shoes, how much km's have you done with them, do they have wide toe boxes? Feet swell while running and if there is no room for the foot to expand it might push into the side of the shoe leaving the foot compressed.
Keep in mind I'm just an amateur runner and not a medical person, these are just general things you could try and see what gives.

hurt my groin recently and took 2 weeks off before the wolverhampton 10k and was ok till about the 3rd mile but kept going and managed to get a time of 42:27 which is my fastest 10k i've done in years tbh, struggled walking though after it and on the night but was much worse but was better the next day but now i'm icing etc and hopefully it heals asap, think must come on when i'm doing too much as i'm ok for a while when i'm training then the pain starts from dull and if keep running it gets worse

Hey guys! Quick question. Is Anna on her way to Boston? She gave me her number before and
I expect to see her around miles 17 to 18 if she is still running. Just checking.

@@runningchannel Excellent. I should see her just before she gets to the "fun" part of Boston.
Boston is definitely a nice 10k after a 20 mile warm up.

Niggles are injuries. Not niggles. I try and listen to my body when it's just whispering, not only when it's screaming.
