As a swimmer myself, I will say there have been many times I’ve walked over to a guy I swam against to congratulate him, breaking a personal best is a big think in swim, like a big thing. And it always makes someone’s day! ❤
I was lucky enough to meet him a few years back since he was visiting my old team. My man is super humble and made a lot of us younger swimmers wayyyyy more confident in ourselves and was really understanding. He even jokingly (I think) yelled at our coach for a set he had us do (I think I was 13 at the time) that set being 5000 yards every third 25 butterfly. That made us feel really good since the coach made him do the same set without the fly, everyone was like “we work harder than Caleb Dressell!”
I remember an even more impressive feat from dressed. Everyone was so hype over his sprint free an butterfly performances, but when he swam at SEC championships, he swam off events since he already had lNCAA qualifying times for every one of main events, so he swam the 100yard breaststroke and broke the American record. For any foreigners who don’t know: Americans typically swim short course yards (25y per length) during winter, so most of the swim season including collegiate and long course meters (Olympic, 50m per length) during the summer, so American records are only different from world records because they are in yards

I see people say that Ai Mori isn't impressive just because she's light and she's not lifting much weight, which is bs because she has less muscle as a result. I would say skateboarders have a more positive and encouraging community
I met him a few years back at a TYR swim pro series, and he just seems to have a great time the whole time he is competing. During a commercial break sweet Caroline was playing, and he was behind the blocks warming up but also dancing to the song at the same time period and he always celebrates/congratulates his competitors.
As a swimmer, celebrating for competitors and their PRs is pretty commonplace, but to see that it happens outside of low league swims, especially in the Olympics is an eye opener for sure.
I used to run competitive track and cross country in college and if the person who beat me in a race came over to congratulate me on a PR, I'd feel amazing. I'd already be going through losing and the camaraderie from that gesture would be a nice pick-me-up
This is why I LOVE SWIMMING! The sportsmanship in swimming is on a different level than any other sport. It is the tradition and culture of swimming that made me commit 16 years of my 22 year life to the sport. Especially once you get to high level swimming like in college. And not the petty swimming of the high schoolers who do not show this kind of humility. It’s a sport we all know sucks. But we love it. Almost like masochist. It’s the one sport that is purely mental during practice.

I used to swim nationals, it sucked and I hated it because I was forced into the sport, doing 2 hour training sessions every morning and afternoon, competing locally every few weeks. I was 7, homeschooled, with no friends. I’m older now, I finally managed to quit after 7 years of convincing my parents. I’ve been doing a lot better, and now working on building a social life with others. ❤

@@keirajohnson3688 yes maybe you are taught that, that isn’t very viable though because one this is fly, not freestyle, two it’s a 100. A 50 you’ll see people swim no breath decently common at high level. 100 is a lot more challenging to go without much breathing because your legs can give out

I think swimming has some of the best camaraderie out of any sport. The pro swimmers, while fierce competitors, are also all friends. Most train together, work with the same coaches, and they see each other many times a year at different swimming events.
I've always loved when athletes have respect for each other and show great sportsmanship. Sharing the other athletes accomplishments is an awesome thing. Yeah it sucks to not win but you guys all tried your best and one team or individual came out on top. Cool dude
Swimming is the best sport in terms of working most of your body at all times. I was a competitive swimmer until I was 18 and spent 40 hours a week in the pool. And out of the pool exercising about 10 hrs a week. I could watch races all day and still want more. My body fat % was as low as 9%. Damn I miss it!! Glad I found the channel!!! My world studies teacher back in high school was the schools water polo coach for the boys. He told us that he would condition his team by doing butterfly strokes, that they were one of the toughest exercises they would perform. Olympic Swimmers have my respect 😮🎉
Beating a personal best really is such a good feeling. While on my high school team I suffered sever depression caused by an undiagnosed thyroid issue and didn't really care about anything. I joined the swim team because my mom thought it would be good for me. On the day of one of our meets I beat my time by 10 seconds. I was till pretty new to the swim world and didn't comprehend how good that was. I got out of the pool dissapointed that I had gotten 5th place but my entire team screamed and congratulated me after my coach yelled out that I had beat my best time by 10 seconds. It felt amazing and made me want to try harder.
Dude I was watching that exact Olympics when I was a bit younger and thought "he broke a WR no biggie"... Now I am so impressed that swimmers can do that, it's amazing because I go to the gym and breaking your own PR is amazing. Props to Caleb!

Ive never watched swimming and I was about to say an under 50 second swim for 100 meters is already mental but these beasts did butterflies, BUTTERFLIES! Absolute athletes!
The 100 fly is both my favorite event to swim, and my favorite event to watch. I always find myself entranced by the technique of the fastest heats of the men’s 100 fly.

As a swimmer, we are taught to not breathe the last 15 or so meters because breathing slows you down
Man sportsmanship is great. Never saw it highschool unfortunately. I think maybe once but most kids were the worst. Good to see hope in that area.
The 100 fly is both my favorite event to swim, and my favorite event to watch. I always find myself entranced by the technique of the fastest heats of the men’s 100 fly.
