    SUMMARY
Don’t forget that safety comes first! And if you think it’s a good idea to swim after taking a glass of wine, you are wrong! Don’ swim if you have consumed alcohol!
If you feel pain, dizziness, cramps, get out of the water immediately!
Don’t follow others’ example in jumping from a pier - it can be extremely dangerous!
Swim only on well-maintained sandy beaches, in places without strong currents, where there are lifeguards and where the water is regularly checked.

As a swim instructor and a lifeguard I can tell you the most important thing is to remain calm. Most people are buoyant and will float so long as you relax. If you don't, your muscles will tense up and that is what causes you to sink. If you have no confidence in your skills, remain calm and do not move. Wait for someone to come get you. Deep, slow breaths and please relax.

I do 5 km lake crossings alone each day during the summer in Switzerland and although I know that it is dangerous at age 61 I can't not keep swimming. In Thailand I did a 6 miles swim with a partner but without any preparation in terms of checking the currents...this was very unwise. I sometimes feel scared in the middle of the lake but then re-compose myself. I think that it is a form of acting out and playing Russian roulette with fate. I do have a Bay Watch float trailing me on a string behind me and I cheat using fins. I was pushed into a pool when I was young and also saw three people drown in the sea in France and was very scared of swimming. I think that there is a transcending element in my behavior.

I learned when I was maybe 13 years old because I wouldn’t go swimming often and had my own drowning experience.
I think the way I learned was by practicing the same movements in the shallow end as a kid. Then moving on to the sides of the pool.
Always have someone who can swim with you and try your best to not freak out because you’ll only lose energy and possibly make it harder for someone to save you.
Im 19 now and pretty confident in my swimming ability but I would never underestimate any body of water.

    @spell5869 Před 5 lety +302

    Tips from me
1 - When your lungs are full of air your body will float on its own.
2 - When you are doing the legs make sure the legs are bend only 10% and you have to also point your toes.
3 - If you took a dive in deep water and your body isnt going up or down and your stuck in middle, start moving your legs and push the water down wards so you can come up. ( Your coach will tell you how to do it).
4 - If you are scared of diving, tell your coach when it's your turn to push you or tell your friend, and if your diving like in 6ft make sure before jumping put your hands up then jump, this is because then people will know that you can't can up.
    Thats it :)

I was fortunate someone jumped in to save me because everyone else just stood around 😔. And I attempted to go skydiving last year since I'm terrified of heights and 3 days straight of trying to Skydive to be told it was very windy and couldn't do it. I had a lot of traumatic experiences in the lake+ pool from being forced in or thrown in without preparation and I was always afraid of water. When I turned 21 I moved to Hawaii and now I love the ocean. I learned by floating on my back to relax and trust my self and always respect the ocean (water). I learned about under currents from being caught
In them and having to relax until they were over. I also started bringing my fins and floaty to help me swim thru the water with leverage and ease. Now I’m getting in with nothing and floating on my back looking up at the sun or flipping on my stomach and putting my whole face in the water.
Another experience I had in Kona, we were supposed to swim with the dolphins in really deep water and you had to jump in off a reef that opened into the Pacific Ocean. I was TERRIFIED. I literally watched other people get in with no problem while I stalled and over thought it. Thankfully I had people I trusted to help me get over my fear and used a noodle to get in. Once I did, and stopped breathing so heavy I realized I was floating with no effort at all like a rubber ducky in a gigantic bathtub!!!!! Then I put my face under water and saw how deep the water was and how beautiful the sea like was, how quiet it is under there, It changed my perception of Fear and the water. I literally put the floaty in one hand stretched out in front of me and thought, I don’t NEED this. My body was created as a natural floaty as long as I keep my lungs clear of water and filled with air 😂😂😂. The moment you fight the water, you start to sink and you scare the fish away😙. I encourage you to try swimming in a place that inspires you and with people who can support you as you get comfortable in the water. It’s one of the most rewarding things I can do alone daily that’s free and gives me instant stress relief. I hope this helps💗🌺☀️

Depth isn't so much an issue for me (like I love pools and I don't have to be able to reach the bottom) I can't handle not being able to see the bottom. This is highly dubious. These are only suggestions. 1. Do not breathe under water without breathing apparatus 2. Do not go swimming alone if you are not confident, and even if you are it is still preferable to swim with or near others. 3. Buoyancy is different depending on what water you are swimming in. Salt water is very buoyant. 4. Do not dive or jump into water which is shallow. 5 Swimming in the sea is different to swimming in a pool or a river. 5 If you wear a wetsuit it gives you some buoyancy but it will not swim for you. 6. If you breathe in water, make your way out of the water, or to shallower water if this is not possible roll on your back and try not to panic. 7. Waves, wind and currents make swimming more difficult. 8. Do not attempt to swim further than you have before in isolated conditions. 9. If you are in trouble call for help, wave an arm but remember to breathe at regular intervals. 10. The temperature of the water affects how long you can safely swim, as the colder the water the less time you can swim for. 11. Clothing makes it harder to swim, but you might loose less body heat with tight fitting clothing. 12. The larger your surface area the more heat you loose.

Yeah I don't think that's how you swim. What my big sister taught me was to put your hands on like a board or on the side of a pool and kick you legs. You're legs can be bent a little bit and you always need to point your feet. Then when you are okay, make sure to use a board they use at indoor water parks or pools and bring your arm under and then over the water and then put your hand back on the board and then keep repeating that until you feel ready to swim. You're whole entire body should be flat in the water.

When I was working in my dad's subsidary company in RAICHUR district (A place in KARNATAKA state) in INDIA (country) as a SOLAR Engineer Trainee, I went to a nearby fresh water lake along with my colleagues.
I remember that I was literally drowning at one point in the lake where my colleague quickly noticed and saved me. I'm very much thankful to him for this. From that day the fear of water increased for me and it took me almost 2 years to get rid of that fear when I went again for swimming along with my MBA friends to a resort. But seriously, I agree that we should get rid of the fear of water and should get trained properly on swimming. I'm planning for this in next month.

After years of not actually swimming, my school puts up swimming as our focus in PE for one semester last year and I attended only 2/10 or more classes because I was that afraid. This year tho, I skipped the first 2 classes then I finally got the motivation to do it because people believed in me overcoming my fear so I joined and in just maybe 3 or 4 classes I'm surprised I actually am kinda doing freestyle nicely already :D

I have overcome my fear of water. 🏊‍♀️ I joined a triathlon team and could not swim. Now guess who swims in the lake 18 “ feet deep. It’s about comfort levels. At first I learned how to float then I bought fins. I could go back and forth in the pool on my back only. Then one day I turned over and discovered the water supported me . On my back or stomach. Thanks to Derrick Milligan my swim Coach for his consistency and dedication.Learned at 45 now I’m 61 .

Easy for you to say. I was spooked when I was little. I have dyspraxia a coordination problem. My lovely father threw me into mother's beach (beach water comes in but no waves) at Marina Del Rey in Los Angeles when I was about 5 years old not knowing THEN that I indeed had and still have dyspraxia. Next thing I knew, someone rescued me-from this day til now-I trust nobody to teach me how to swim and float. However I do like getting into a pool and take a deep breath and dive underwater even opening my eyes for a short minute while having my feet planted on the floor of the pool. Huge pools scare me-I get panicky-cause I fear someone trying to drag me into the deep end. If someone could cure my dyspraxia, maybe it may change me. With this condition I don't know how to ride a bike as well as this too requires coordination.
