    Hi. Thanks for creating this series. I'm retired and used to plink a lot back in the day. I'm getting into some bench rest shooting and Academy Sports made me an offer I couldn't refuse on a Ruger a week ago. I put a budget CVLite 6X24 scope on it. The combination shoots pretty well, but I'm interested in stepping up to better glass. I also picked up a Savage MK II in 22 LR, and it too shoots way better than I can, but when I'm doing my job on the bench they both shoot quarter sized groups at 50 yards easily, and I've been spending most of my time with them working on breathing and trigger control, so far. Our local club has a bench rest match weekly and I'm looking at other's guns for ideas as well. Both are a little picky on ammo but both seem to like CCI Target and Aquilla Standard velocity the best.

    Thanks for the video it should have a lot of interest.
    From my experience, and what I see at the NRL matches around my area honestly the Ruger isn't in the same ballpark. I'm not trying to bash Ruger at all but it's just not a popular gun in NRL for a lot of reasons.
    After market triggers are available for all of them as far as I know.
    I would also say a one pound trigger or less on a CZ is an easy adjustment without any spring change, we've done it many times.
    A spring change does make it easier though.
    It's also worth mentioning if someone wants to move up to open class later on, the sky is the limit for a couple of these rifles, not so much for the Ruger
    Your build will definitely interest a lot of people and I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.
    I can tell you've got a well though out plan.
    Thanks again for all the work you've already put into your video, great job

      Thanks for watching!
      I've heard the Ruger gets a bad reputation, but I wanted to try something new since I use a CZ in open class. If it doesn't work out I'll be the first to admit it.
      As for the triggers, the triggers are available, but I was referring to the footprint/architecture. The Ruger is proprietary to the RPRF (the Ruger American doesn't have the same trigger). Same with the CZ, it's unique to the 457 (455/452 triggers are different). The Tikka shares the same footprint as the t3x centerfire rifles and the Rem 700 is pretty ubiquitous. Sorry if that was unclear.

    When I decided to get into BR and precision 22lr competition my research eliminated two guns rather quickly
    One was the Savage B22 Precision due to it having well documented chronic issues with both miss feeds and ejection and far to many guys at my rifle club had owned and sold the Ruger RPR due to poor and inconsistent accuracy issues.

    Bergara BMR is the sleeper here. Running a cheap Bushnell Banner II 4X12 (lots of room to up-grade glass for NRL22 base) it hangs with my buddy's tricked-out ($$$) 457 consistently. He's no slouch either, shooting centerfire @ a mile. Kicker is, I picked it up at a LGS running a 20% off sale for a hair over $450. $99 glass and I'm having a ball for under $600. Timney and JARD Inc both make triggers for the RPRR if you want to go aftermarket with it. Anarchy Outdoors has precision rifle grip angles and higher MOA rails for the RPRR as well. The m-lok fore-end also allows for easy Arca-swiss compatability. All around the RPRR is a great base to work from.

    I so wanted to get a Ruger for ARA factory class, especially because of the number of 10/22 mags I already have. I just can't get past the look and feel of the RPR. It screams 1990's paintball gun to me. And their other bolt rimfire options get middling reviews at best.
    I ended up with a CZ Varmint, which limited my scope options a bit due to its MSRP ($650), but I found the Athlon (Argos 8-34 x 56) will work for me at just under the MSRP limit.

    CZ Provarmint. They don't seem to be as finicky with ammo, so if the best shooting ammo isn't available you can still be competitive. Looking at all the specs being compared, I would have recommend a CZ457 Pro Varmint 16". Out of the box it shoots the lights out and you can modify the trigger with a BIC lighter spring and some sear polishing. I owned a Pro Varmint and the only reason I sold it was to get a B14R Trainer. Was the B14R worth the extra money? Absolutely. • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision  Před 8 měsíci

      Any competitor aged 60 or older is classified as an OG (Old Gun). Furthermore, if you have any special needs/considerations that limit you from safely participating in the stage as it is written, there is also the Adaptive division. If you look at the courses of fire published by the NRL22 organization there will be an Adaptive recommendation that should help accommodate those who may be unable to do all of the movements on stages.
      You can get a more in depth look at the rules on the NRL22 website under section 5.B.7 and 5.B.8
      The sport is an absolute blast while still being challenging and competitive. We have many senior shooters, and they do quite well. There is a learning curve to this style of competition, so don't get discouraged during your first few matches.
      If you look at other videos on my channel, I break down each stage of each month's course of fire with strategy, tips and tricks on how to do better. I always publish these videos before the first match of the month so that you have time to watch them and strategize. While I do not cover the adaptive alternate stage description, the tips should still help out. I also publish full match footage so you can get a feel for how things go during the actual match.
      I wholeheartedly encourage you to seek out a match (typically through a website called Practiscore) or look on the NRL22 website for a club near you. You can even find Match Directors' contact information on the site so that you could reach out with any questions or concerns. Most are welcoming of spectators if you want to go to watch a match and get a feel for the sport.
      I hope you give it a chance, but be careful, it can be addicting!
      Let me know if there's any other questions I can answer or if I can facilitate your journey in any way.

    I know this is an old video but hopefully somebody might see this question and be able to answer it. If you purchased a gun like the CZ 457 that came with the stock are you allowed to change it to a chassis and stay in the base category?

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision  Před 4 měsíci +1

      In short, no. If you change the configuration of the rifle to another stock/chassis that is offered by the manufacturer AND still come in under the price cap then you are fine. However, the only chassis currently offered from CZ is the model with the MDT ACC Premier chassis at $1899 MSRP which is way over the cost cap of $1300. There were some older models of the CZ 457 in a chassis, but those too were over the price cap for base class. If you decide to go that route, you would have to compete in open class.

    If you would have chosen the CZ 457 which specific model would you have picked?

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision  Před rokem

      I have a CZ 457 MTR that I shoot in Open Class, but since it has given me first round flyers due to the tight bore I am putting a new barrel on it. Other than the first round it shoots very well, but price wise puts you out of base class. For Base Class I would lean towards the CZ 457 Varmint (MSRP $625). It is the standard heavy-barreled version of the 457 and the 20.5" straight tapered barrel helps with overall balance and gives good velocity/harmonics. The barrel does not come threaded, so if you need that you would have to take it to a gunsmith. The Pro Varmint does come with a threaded barrel, but it's only 16.5" length.

I have the area 419 scope base and bolt knob coming and now that the rifle is $519 MSRP I am trying to get ahold of an Arken EP5. While money is an object, I am building a Ruger American Rimfire for CMP spotter class at the same time, so, my build will lag behind yours. Are you allowed to post where you are sourcing ammo from?

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision  Před rokem

      Nice! I have a CZ 457 MTR that I use for Open Class. As for scope choice I have a video coming out Monday. I should have considered the Arken scope as it looks promising. The Bushnell Match Pro ended up being only $375 after the coupon code MP75OFF through their website (spoiler alert, that's what I picked up).
      I hope some of the Ruger upgrades/modifications I make help your build, but they will be a little more tailored to the NRL22 game.
      CZcams doesn't allow links to anything firearms related, but I source most of my ammo locally from Burno's Shooting Supplies (they will also ship). Other than that you can compare prices for ammo at places like AmmoSeek. Midway USA has a decent selection, but prices tend to be higher. Unfortunately lot testing is key and there only a few places that allow you to specify lots of ammo. The long term end goal would be to travel to the Laupa Testing Center since it is local to me and film my experience with lot testing. The challenge there is that you'd have to buy a minimum of a case at a time (5000 rounds) which can be a financial burden.
      Best of luck with your builds and stay tuned for lots more content! Cheers!

    Good video and thank you for sharing. To my understanding to get into NRL22 based class rifle and scope msrp cannot exceed $1,200. My dilemma is I have a very precision shotting pre JR Marlin XT-22TR topped off with Leopold Mark AR 4-12x40 scope. It's tube feed and I usually put 15 rounds. Very accurate and consistent with Wolf 40 gr Match Extra. Now both rifle and scope is long out of production. I have not found any literature on my problem with proof of msrp. Does anyone know what I should do other than buying new rifle scope? I have not reached out to NRL folks yet, but thought to ask after watching the video. Cheers all.

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision  Před rokem +3

      Go to nrl22.org/downloads/ and look at any course of fire. The second page will detail the running list of out of production rifles that are considered base class. Marlin is on the list. These rifles must be in their original factory configuration to be eligible for base class. As for the scope you might need to take the original MSRP and adjust for inflation. Tube fed rifles are rarely seen and sometimes discouraged as they are difficult to show as safe (rifle must be unloaded and no rounds in the rifle at end of stage). Also the "load and make ready command" is the only time you can put ammunition in the rifle as most ranges operate as a cold range. Please be sure to check with the Match Director for proper safety procedures.
      For a club match you are probably fine with permission from the MD, national competitions will have a more strict interpretation of the rules.
      Hope that helps.

      CZ offers chassis for some of it's rifle configurations. So long as that combination is something offered from the factory AND its price meets the budget cap you're okay, however, those models are more expensive and would probably put you out of base class.
      If you use a chassis that is not provided as an option from the manufacturer then that would automatically move you to Open.

Each rifle is different and you need to find the type and lot that works for what you need.

    By chance I ended up on your channel. I was originally going to spend a lot more on a precision rifle for 22LR for shooting long range and did not know that NRL22 existed. I have to admit that it looks like a lot of fun versus just shooting long distances. My dilemma is that I really like the CZ CZ 457 Varmint AT-ONE which retails for $759 for the rifle and the Bushnell MATCH PRO 6-24X50 RIFLESCOPE is $499. I'm just 58 dollars over! I really like both, but I'm not sure which one to give up. Any advice?

    • @CopperStarPrecision
      @CopperStarPrecision  Před rokem +2

      I love CZ rifles and shoot one in open class. If you haven't had the chance to handle an AT-ONE stock I would highly recommend holding one before buying. I've found that the length of pull is actually quite short even with the adjustments (I'm 6'00" and it's short for me).
      For a CZ base class build I would rather have the regular Varmint with the heavy 20.5" barrel. If you really need something threaded out of the box there's also the CZ 457 ProVarmint Suppressor-Ready, but that only has a 16.5" barrel that will be harder to balance and will have lower velocity. The heavy 20.5" barrel of the normal Varmint can always be threaded by a gunsmith later if you want to add a tuner or suppressor and the act of threading the barrel doesn't push you out of base class. These rifles are $625-$679 retail.
      Also, the non-illuminated Bushnell Match pro is $50 cheaper. It doesn't get you under the limit, but just something to keep in mind. I would try not to skimp on the features of the optic whenever possible.
      Unfortunately with inflation the way it is, the MSRP of most rifles has increased even though you can find them for less. I imagine they will update the price cap for next season.
      Also, there is the Precision Rifle Series (PRS) Rimfire matches. They have a class called production that has a $1500 limit. There aren't any PRS Rimfire matches near me, but check to see if you want to go that route. The general idea is the same, but the courses of fire are up to the individual match directors and not the same set of courses nationally like NRL-22.
      Best of luck!

      Sorry if I was unclear. Yes, there are aftermarket triggers for all the rifles. What I was referring to was the trigger architecture/footprint. The CZ trigger is unique to the 457 (the 455/452 triggers won't work). Same for the Ruger (the Ruger American Rimfire isn't compatible). The Tikka is the same platform as their centerfire rifles and the Bergara uses the ubiquitous Remington 700 pattern allowing for additional options.

      First, i guess you don`t know much about guns. Seems you just want to jump on your club`s bandwagon and bash the Ruger brand. There are bolt shims available for the RPRF to fix a tight bolt. Been there an done it, $12 for the shims, bolt works like butter on hot toast. Second, you`re not paying the premium for the RPRF either. Its a very good gun for the money...PERIOD. If you think the Ruger is hard to function, you haven`t tried a Savage 22RF chassis model. Savage bolts are horrible. Of the 3 savages that i tried out, 2 of them you couldn`t hardly cycle the bolt because it was so stiff, and machining of their bolts just sucked. The 3rd Savage i tried out, the bolt seized up and locked up solid right in the gun store where i was checking them out. Why don`t you, and your clubbie buddies, go check out the Savage chassis guns, compare it to the Ruger chassis gun, i bet you`ll feel different towards the Ruger brand. The Savage brand is what turned me to the Ruger brand for a cheap chassis gun. The RPRF i bought, will shoot right next to my CZ457 Varmint all day long. And my RPRF is less fussy about ammo vs the CZ457 Varmint i have.

      I've been shooting the single shot Rem 580 that I learned how to shoot on 50 years ago for local comps and challenges. It has held it's own the last year or so, but just recently purchased a CZ 457 Varmint to replace it in competition.
