The DWM company in Germany had a license on the Maxim gun design prior to World War One. They produced the rather old-fashioned MG08 for the German army, but also wanted to have a modernized type of gun for commercial sales. This was the Model 1913 Parabellum, with the design improved by Karl Heinemann. Like the Vickers, Heinemann's improvement included inverting the lock to reduce the size of the receiver box. He also moved the mainspring inside the receiver and simplified the lock.
The gun was formally adopted by the German military as the Model 1914 for aircraft use. The water jacket of the original design was slotted like the lMG08 and it was used as a flexible observer's gun. It had a rate of fire around 1000 rpm - much faster than the MG08 and 08/15, which definitely suited aerial use. An improved version was adopted as the 1914/17, with the barrel jacket reduced in diameter and a 3x telescopic sight fitted. This final version weighted just 22 pounds (10 kg).
After the war, production of the Parabellum simply ended. None of the guns were officially taken by the US as war reparations (unlike the MG08 and 08/15, which were Brough back to the US in large numbers) and all the different patterns (water-cooled 1913, air cooled 1914, and lightened 1914/17) are extremely scarce today. Many thanks to Limex for giving me access to film this one for you!

"Wilhelm, why are you numbering those screws?"
"So that the armorer does not replace them in the wrong order, Franz."
"But they are identical. What would be the harm?"
"...they would be _wrong,_ Franz."
Identical at that time? Probably makes sense to also have in a manual to not mess up attaching the mount, tightening in order just like following a shape to torque car wheels.
That would be unsatisfactory.
Yes, it gives a strong "one single way to do it right" vibe.
I'm reminded that "replaceable parts" is one of the prerequisites for Great War Infantry in one of the later Civilisation games.
It would make more sense to number the *holes* , if installation order is important.
the moment when you see his green jacket and think "that looks kinda cool, wonder where he got it" only to have the video cut to basically an ad for said jacket
153 euros.
Awesome jacket. Have one myself.
Jacket and contents are current issue to B52 bomber crew for emergency bail out and weekend furlough on leave in Vegas or Helinski🦊
@@MumrikDK you could get five jackets made by Vietnamese children with that money
Guy's got to make a living people
That parabellum lock is one of the most German things I've ever seen. This gun is the WW1 equivalent of a G11.
I'm sad that the G11 never went anywhere. The engineer in me tells me that having a firearm that mechanically resembles a Swizz wrist watch is a very bad idea. But my fetish for intricate mechanics tells me it's a thing of true beauty that someone (preferably me) should baby frequently with the best lubricants and intricate adjustment procedures known to man.
@@andersjjensen Yeah, I'm with you. I understand *why* the G11 wasn't successful, but it had so many clever ideas in its design that its cancellation still feels like a shame.
For me it appears more like the WW1 equivalent of the Stoner LMG
I still believe in the concept of the G11, though I think certain things particularly the caseless powder needs more work.
@@coaxill4059 I think materialscience was in a very different place in the 80s than it is now, particularly due to how advanced computers are in comparison to then
The Varusteleka bit had me in tatters.
That firearm is in absolutely stunning condition.
All that equipment, and not a single bottle of the ruby red elixir.
@@nickaschenbecker9882 wheeze.jpg 🤣🤣🤣
So true. I'd buy a hoodie if it came will all that swag in addition to the hoodie. Yeah, it'd be a couple of grand, but it'd be worth it! ^-^
Wonderfully done
Gun indeed in excellent condition. That said, it might have been stolen from the Herman Goering collection!
Nice take on the survival kit from Dr. Strangelove.
Fun fact about the original scene: if you watch Slim Pickens' mouth movements, he doesn't say "Vegas." The original line was, "shoot, a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Dallas with all that stuff." The movie was also going to be released in late November 1963. For obvious reasons the release was delayed and the line was changed.
I nevr knew that - fascinating! Thank you.
That is actually a really interesting tidbit!!
I just love how this weapon looks. That oversized scope and just the overall design of the gun looks really neat to me.
EXTREMELY Star Wars
@@TheSmokingMustache i tought the same
I found George Lucas you guys. He’s been watching Forgotten Weapons this whole time.
That’s a Vladof machine gun if I’ve ever seen one. Marcus would happily sell that to you for 27,000 dollars.
@@TheSmokingMustache can you guys stop making everything some connection to star wars please
This gun was a beast in bf1
im still playing it. its still a great game!
One of the best guns in BF1.
40k kills on it ❤
There is no way I’d have guessed that was a Maxim if you’d shown me a pic and asked me to guess. Fascinating, and what a cool thing to own!
I think it‘s quite obvious. Especially if you look at the receiver and the date it was released. Sill an interesting machine gun
The only real sign it's a Maxim is that cocking handle .
@@theowlfromduolingo7982 I always associate the Maxim with that big water jacket on the barrel, never actually seen one without it tbh. Thanks Ian for telling me the 1917 version was air-cooled with a different barrel shroud!
I know ads have been quite scarce on your channel. I'm mostly happy about that.
That Varusteleka ad, however, was PERFECT. So funny I almost choked on my breakfast. So true to the channel and your style. It was beautiful, it was amazing, and I wholeheartedly approve. If you show a varusteleka ad in every video from today until you retire, you will never hear me whine about it.
Good Lord. Now this certainly is a rival to the Vickers. What a machine! Thanks again for bringing us the truely forgotten, dare I say obscure, weapons from yesteryear. Cheers Ian!
The vickers is the maxim
@@justforever96 Yes they did, for aircraft use. Doesn't look much different to a standard Vickers from a distance as it retained the barrel jacket, but with slots cut into it for airflow.
Great review of the 1914/17!
Loved the Varusteleka ad. Props for the the Dr. Strangelove reference too! 😉
But the prophylactics are lacking and even more important now. Critical to maintain the purity of one's bodily fluids!
@@george2113 🤣🤣🤣😂🤣
And I think a knife or two is essential for survival in Helsinki. Great ad - I'll watch that again :)
@@george2113 he also didn't say "Dallas" and dub it over in post.
"Toe-to-toe nucl'r combat with the RUskies!"
I was so excited for you to finally showcase this gun, only for it to be overshadowed by the magnificent Varusteleka ad.
I felt that! The ad really set too high a standard for the real show!
The sliding top cover is positively awesome.
The sliding top cover alone is brilliant!
I was very impressed with the restraint shown by DWM for not serializing the mounting screws.
From the UK here. Other than an air rifle, I have never fired a gun but find your channel so interesting. I'm not technically minded either but find your channel so accessible as you do an amazing job explaining how they work and what makes each piece unique. I've said this before but my favourite videos are ones with a story behind them like the PTRD, Pancor Jackhammer and the 'Green Meanie.' I recently watched an older video of yours on the Springfield Hellion, a really beautifully designed weapon. Once again, a fantastic Channel.
@@speedyd8150 I think the UK banned firearms in the 1990s (which was how the luty was made).
Even the air rifles in the UK are neutered 🤣 too bad y’all can’t have a full power Texan LSS CF .457 or a full auto Hatsan Blitz in 30cal
@@speedyd8150 Basically everyone in UK or most EU countries is allowed to own a firearm. But why would you want to own a firearm? Why would you need one? Some people here do target shooting or hunting. Also criminals shouldnt be allowed to own one. I dont want somebody who was in jail for assault running around with a gun.
@@HalfLife-hq8eu nope - we can own anything except self-loading centerfires and most handguns. Shotguns (2 barrel, pump, auto), bolt actions, underlevers, are all legal. The licencing is based on power at the muzzle, so there's 2 tiers of air rifles - licence free and those requiring a fire arm certificate (FAC) - above or below 12ft/lbs
@@joeharris864 oh. Didn't know that
Oh, I remeber this gun from BF1. It was a great joy to use it there.
We must capture the objective butter

im still playing that game, its great!
Props for that little Dr Strangelove reference there!
Great nod to Dr. Strangelove. Excellent podcast as usual.
I knew I recognized it from somewhere.
It would have been incredible if Ian slipped flawlessly into a Slim Pickens voice
Tell Varusteleka to bring back the Forgotten Weapons themed Cosmoline
Kudos on the Dr. Strangelove reference in the merch ad. Well played. 😎
When I was younger I had a visual encyclopedia of guns of the world. Hundreds and hundreds. I knew nothing about guns but spent hours reading it. Your channel is like the video version of that book.
Scoped MG on an airplane. That is tactical on so many levels.
No water jacket so it’s Tacticool?
I kinda wonder how useful the scope really was on a moving airplane shooting at other moving airplanes? 🧐
@@leofriedwald9901 Still better than some iron sights I'd reckon
@@leofriedwald9901 indeed - I know Ian said it's x3, but I am wondering what the field of view will be; early sniper scopes were very narrow field of view. I am also not clear so far as to whether the iron sights were replaced or not, as I am alos puzzling over why the scope is offset to the left... I'll type that all out in my own response!
The MG 14/17 looks so much more "modern" than it actually is, it's a really good-looking design.
Magnificently "German" in design. I loved how when you exposed the inner workings, the first thing I saw was a scattering of serial numbers. Great video! Zk
I'm sure you don't love that your channel includes sales efforts now, but by gum you don't let that stop you from making a delightful effort every time. Thanks Ian.
The indexed scope mounting screws really showed the attention to detail.
I'd say indexed for good reason. Things can loosen very quickly with MG vibration.
Thank you Mr. McCollum for introducing me to this wonderful piece of machinery…
This is now my preferred choice for conceal carry!
Yep just put it in your back pocket... Not conspicuous at all...
One of the few really great channels of YT. Information, humor and historic side kicks in perfect balance. The hoody add is cool af.
For those that watched before the reupload, there's an extra bit around the 4:10 mark which has an extra Varusteleka hoodie bit not present in the original upload. Otherwise, it seems it's still the same vid as before.
Thanks, I had it paused around the 10 minute mark. Went to replay, and boom, video unavailable.
Yeah, I accidentally scheduled the wrong version to publish. Whoops!
@@ForgottenWeapons Speaking of the Varusteleka ad and the bottle of Kyrö in it, have you had a chance to try their Wood Smoke Malt Rye? I have found myself mostly repulsed by smoky whiskys up until now, which was weird because I usually love smoky things, and after drinking that I have come to the conclusion that it's peat smoke specifically that I hate. Would be interesting to hear your impressions on the wood smoke one, knowing your love of peat smoked whiskys. =)
Genuine Cosmoline
@@jubuttib Try Laphroaig. I believe it is the maltiest scotch on the market.
Prior to the turn of the century I had a bolt-action hunting rifle equipped with a Leupold QD scope mounting system (bases and rings) that operated the exact same way as the QD scope mounting system demonstrated in this video.
Did it hold zero? I can only imagine the more it got used the worse it could get.
@@noscopesallowed8128 With the Leupold QD system installed the .30-06 rifle delivered MOA accuracy with two brands of factory ammo all during my ownership. Leupold still sells these and they're a great way to make a quick change to an already zeroed backup scope if the need ever arises. The system is well engineered and problem free.
Ok, I gotta say, this video has the best merch plug I've ever seen. I wish all advertising were like that, that was actually fun.
I loved the riff on Slim Pickens' Dr Strangelove scene.
That ad for the jacket was amazing. I will watch those forever
Ian your such a legend ,loved the ad 👍as always, loved the video ,super informative and super enthusiastic, thank you 🙏🥷
I love these old guns that use state of the art steam engine technology and design. For reference, check out some old train engines...same kind of mechanics, linkages, etc...
I went towards a ship's triple expansion steam engine, lots of moving parts that need constant lubrication.
that is the absolute best advertisement for a hoodie ever. I'm sold I'll take three.
Wow that ad was amazing.
Great work as usual Ian!
Props for the Slim Pickens / Dr Strangelove reference!
The add for the Forgotten Weapons shop was very well done. :)
The Varusteleka mini commercial with the Dr. Strangelove reference…sublime.
Ian's picture on the face cream got me good, lol.
I regret to say that it looks like the scope retention tabs were turned 180 degrees instead of 90 degrees to release the scope. Around 14 minutes.
'Shoot a fella could have a pretty good time in Helsinki with all this stuff'.....classic take from Dr. Strangelove one of my favourite flicks of all time haha. A little trivia about that line in the movie where the audio is dubbed in post production. Original script was Dallas but due to JFK assassination about the time the movie was to be released, they dubbed in Vegas. If you watch Slim closely in the movie you can clearly read his lips saying Dallas.
Anyone else notice the cool belle epoque / fin-de-siecle style font used for the markings?
Another awesome gun I have never seen before! Super work! Thanks!
Love Varusteleka. Perfect ad Ian.
Side tracked, that Lahti 9mm is a hefty boy. Fascinating adaptation of a Maxim. A buffer tube, even the scope reticle... Great contrast to the Vickers modifications.
I've heard Master of Arms, Aimo Lahti (1896 - 1970) being a big man, especially hands being like Bear's paws.
Perhaps just a cute little hand gun for him, bur especially a petit female hardly even reach the trigger of the Lahti Pistol! 😅
This is afterall the reason i watch ian. Excellent review of a very rare machine gun.
ive been waiting for you to get your hands on this one ian, cant wait to watch it
Came for the old weapon, massive thumbs up for the commercial. I laughed so hard I ended up coughing. Back to watching the video and then to Varusteleka for a hoodie.
Hands down the best merch plug I’ve ever seen
Oh. I LOVE the crass commercial plug for Varusteleka!
Extremely Varusteleka product description there, A+.
There are more components in that locking/firing/carrier mechanism than a whole Glock
very nice. Thanks for this presentation.
I love guns like this. Good video, as always.
what an elaborate system! Very interesting. Thanks, Ian
Man that is cool
I've been waiting for something about the Parabellum machine guns to turn up ever since I caught an interest in WW1 aviation.
beautiful machinery!
Excellent ! Very interesting and unusual machine gun !
Thank you !
Great to go up against Vickers. Very lightweight machine gun and I wish to try that one out
Best ad for a hoody I've ever seen!
Been waiting for this one ever since battlefield 1 came out
The hoodie advert was unexpected . . . but I ROFLed HARD!!
Wooo! Finally an American youtuber with merch that I can buy without paying ridiculous amounts in shipping and import duty.
These early MGs are the most interesting guns to me as there is such an incredible amount of engineering in them. Amazing how well these guns ran despite such intricacy.
Thanks Ian this is pretty cool.
Another fascinating and interesting military weapon! Love your work brother!
God bless all here.
Thank you for your effort! I dream to see MG 15 Bergmann on your channel
The merch plug was hilarious 😂 well done
I HATE commercials, but that was on of the best ones i have ever seen.
Oh, Buddy! That's a like for thr advertisement you did there alone. Wish I could give one for the rarity of this thing and another for the explenations in the video. Thank you so much!
Thank you for your videos!!!
Those screws are also (almost) indexed so their slots line up in the same direction.
That's custom gun levels of attention to detail.
Sauberkeit der Arbeit!
A hoodie for all occasions
Belt fed guns from this time always fascinate me. The level of R/D on these guns is mind blowing. So many moving interlocking parts.
LOL Love the nod to Dr. Strangelove with that Hoodie bit...
Thank you , Ian .

This gun has great aesthetics, I wish I could have a modern rifle with this same general look and style. Maybe soon.
Ian, I have to hand it to you. The merch plug had me roaring!
I kept waiting to hear "sadly the barrel is missing, all we have is the gas piston" 😅
I never cease to be amazed by German engineering. Stunning weapon system.
Love the add you snuck in. I got the Dr Strangelove reference.
This was the first time I didn't skip comercial :-D
The numbered screws are just hilarious.
The merch skit had me in stitches!

The MG 14 guns were air-cooled, rather than water cooled. They retained the full size barrel jacket but with slots cut into it, so that air could flow over the barrel.
