Whoever cast him on this role is a genius too. They spotted this sharpness and coldness and just let it thrive. Not the most obvious choice but a fantastic one.

I think Cillian’s portrayal of Tommy in season one is why we root for him the rest of the series. He breaks your heart in season one in how broken he and the other WWI vets are. You see the bits of softness through his love for Grace. It’s just such a genius show.

Actors who win these awards have to campaign for it: they’re team (actor+publicist+manager+ etc) really have to work to get as much press exposure as possible.
For some reason he has not made it into the American awards shows like the Golden Globes or Oscars. With his acting ability, he deserves a gold statue.

Most of the time he seems really bored during interviews but when it’s about his work he looks so passionate and he can talk about it in so much detail. He doesn’t really care about anything around his job, the acting itself is what it’s all about for him ☺️
Aside from the accent, its remarkable how Cillian Murphy can change his speaking tone to such a deep and authoritative register as Tommy.

@Edward DildoHands Yes, but based on Cilian's career, he does not have enough star power to make a hit just by being there. He couldn't do it without a good story and without a good director/producer + I believe there are other top notch actors who could have been great inthe role as well.

He absolutely smashed his role as Tommy, they had a really good character in Mr Shelby but Cillian has made him more than ever expected, he pulls you in and keeps you there as you feel his pain, anguish and takes you on such a personal journey inside his character. Which makes Cillian a magnificent actor for it 👌🏽

The most impressive thing about Cillian is when he plays Tommy Shelby, you can see the pain in his eyes, you can see the hurt, it’s crazy. When I see Tommy Shelby on screen it feels like I’m watching a real person who lived in this time a fully formed human not a character in a show, it’s chilling at times. That’s why I love this show, it’s so gritty and real.

I love both of his accents, both IRL and as Tommy. The Brummie one is a hard one to pull off for a lot of actors. I think he does it fairly well. The Irish accent comes with a lot of hard R’s. It’s neat to hear him do both.

I think he hasn't realized that we see him as Tommy Shelby ,because he was so real in his performance,that we dont see him as the actor in the show, is like he really is Tommy ,with the dark side sweet side and intellectual side. I have seen his other movies and, of course, Oppenheimer , but all I see is Tommy Shelby, which is the effect he has on the audience who watch him. One of the best actors of our time.

It must be strange for an actor to have spent so long doing films to find a career defining role in a BBC drama but Mr Murphy has done just that. No one else can ever play Tommy Shelby.
He has played fame so smart. Flew almost under the radar for nigh on 15yrs? There or there abouts. A long time before anyone gets too precise or pedantic. No one really knew who he was, then Peaky Blinders just went postal! Yeah he has done it better than going from a child star to superstar. He would scoff at that most likely. In this era that I have to think twice before I could recognize “oh it is Cillian!” from movie to movie. From 28days later to red eye to Batman to inception, you know it is him but he managed to give out a totally different person vibe without many facial changes (beard/hair etc)
