I have a suggestion for a future video: Sizes of fictional planets from various shows and movies (Star Wars, Star Trek, Avengers, Justice League, etc.) compared to Earth.

Just in case anyone's wondering: the largest self propelling ship that we've ever build was an oil tanker called _Knock Nevis_ . She was constructed by Sumitomo in Yokosuka, Japan, between 1974 and 1979. She had a lenght of 458.45 meters, a beam (width, in naval terms) of 68.8 meters, and a draft (the distance from the waterline to the deepest part of the hull) of 24.61 meters when full. The displacement while fully loaded was 646'642 tons. Sadly, that ship wasn't present on this video. It would have been cool as a reference.

I'm watching now Girls und Panzer, but this vid was known by me years ago.
The Ooarai carrier is in fact, one of the smallest School-ship of the series (only Maginot ship is smaller). And it has 7.6Km!! +10Km is more the standard, seen in schools like Pravda, Saunders, Gloriana or Anzio.
Congratulations for the anime about cute girls and tanks, that has the biggest ficticional ships in the history! :)

I'm surprised that the Ulysses is smaller than a Typhoon-Class. You'd think a ship that carried 2000 men and a 2-storey tall drill tank would be bigger.

@@afhamzaki2588 it's not packed with SLBMs, a sub like the Typhoon has the vast majority of it's hull taken up with weapons for waging WW3. Ulysses is essentially a big underwater freighter with some weaponry and launchable mini subs.

I would have added some ships from Supreme Commander. The Atlantis, the Tempest and maybe even the Megalith. Megalith is considered to be an Amphibious Naval Vessel despite having legs for movement due to its naval weaponry, massive torpedo system and ability to build units underwater.
What Megalith are you talking about?
Because the only Megalith I can think of is a missile complex from Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies
From Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. It's a Cybran Experimental Unit that's considered their naval unit despite being amphibious and walks on the sea floor. It can, however, breach the surface along the coast and fire its cannons while still firing its torpedoes. @@JustaDan-su5ox

I'm actually almost more impressed with the smallest ones than the biggest.
It's within our technical abilities to build even the largest ships in this video (albeit tremendously expensive) but not the smallest ones. Also shrinking a person ant-man style is impossible.

The largest problem is when they go 'quantum'. In reality the electrons would of smashed into the protons in the nucleus and turned into a bunch of neutrons.

We ended on Girls und Panzer. I couldn't be happier. And I'm not even sure which school's carrier is biggest: Pravda, St. Gloriana, Saunders or Kuromorimine. I think it's actually Kuromorimine, though. And a recent bonus chapter of the Ribbon Warrior spin-off manga went into express detail about the school carriers, why they were made and how they're structured. Basically, they're made out of large standardized boxes that can be added and moved easily and cheaply, which means that the school carriers aren't a set size and can get larger over time as needed.

I've never heard of the show, and honestly don't care, but I am really curious about what it's used for in the show.

@@phin422 It's a high school. There's a small town attached to it to handle the necessary logistics, but primarily, the carriers in the series are for housing a school. Each one except for the one the main characters go to (Ooarai) is themed after a different country that participated in WWII (as each school uses tanks from that nation). Pravda is themed after Russia.
@@SuperfieldCrUn Last I checked, schools didn't need the same space as a fraken city. That monster is the size of an SSD and if that is Russia then odds are the American one would be even larger which is scary to even fathom.
Just a thought for everyone-the Red October was fictional, yes, but the actual Soviet-built Typhoon submarine it’s based on really WAS that big. By far the biggest submarines ever constructed, at twice the submerged displacement of their nearest rivals.
I believe the Red October was actually scaled up about 20% from a regular Typhoon for effect.
Nah the Typhoon was about a fithft smaller. Still impressive af ofc.

The Oorarai carrier isn't even close to the biggest. It's much closer to the smallest in the setting. The biggest is the Sauders Carrier.

“School ships” from the manga and anime Girls und Panzer are massive vessels based on real life ships that were blown up to 10 times their size that had entire cities on their decks. Each school represented a different nation, and they used their nation’s ship as their home. The ships have houses, shops, malls, restaurants, gyms, theatres, parks, and of course a school. The ships also served as training grounds for the schools’ tankery teams, as this series had their students use their nation’s tanks in the most awesome high school sport ever, tank combat.

Saint Gloriana (UK): HMS Ark Royal
Kuromorimine (Germany): Graf Zeppelin

Edit: Okay I just did the math, it’s actually more like 30 times their size. IJN Zuikaku was 257.5 meters long, about 845 feet. Ooarai’s school ship is 7600 meters long, about 25,000 feet. That’s almost 5 miles…
funny enough they weren't known for large ships, but ridiculous tank actions (although large ships are a part of the story)

Very surprised to see GUP made it on this. Though I think it’s fair to say that all of the school carriers would rank as the largest. Pravda (Russia) is the 2nd largest in the GUP universe, falling behind Saunders (United States) if I’m not wrong, though the exact sizes of the carriers are up for debate aside from the two shown. Very well made video!

I thought canonically in the GuP universe there wasn't a lot of land left so naturally cities moved onto ships. If so it's only natural they'd be massive.

Because of how buoyancy there's technically no limit to how big ships can get, so something like the Pravda carrier is possible. So when are we gonna get Girls und Panzer IRL?
there isnt really a limit to how big floaty stuff can get, but no nation on earth is ready or willing to put that much money into something like that.

Yes there is a limit, the steel needs to be able to support itself, as well as the strain of lever action endured by the hull through the waves on either end, neither of which are physically possible IRL

GuP School ships are flat bottomed so they can enter relatively shallow water for a ship their size.
