- Let’s dive into the lore and history of Daxter! The little orange wisecracking little ottsel that he is, Daxter has been by Jak’s side ever since the start of their adventures.
Daxter made his debut in Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy released in 2001. Speaking of which…The Jak & Daxter series is now 20 years old. Happy 20th anniversary Jak & Daxter!
One plot twist we can’t forget, Daxter turned into an ottsel, the creatures called the Precursors. Daxter started off as a human, turned into an ottsel and joined his best friend Jak on many adventures. Through thick and thin, Daxter has always showed how much he cares about his friend.
Daxter appeared throughout the entirety of the series, including his own prequel game ‘’Daxter’’ on the PSP. Daxter has also been referenced in other media and also appeared in non-canon games.

Samos: This is Jak. We took him to hiding to protect from any harm as he is wanted by way to many evil factors, he was chosen by our creators themselves as a messiah-like fugure. He is an heir to the throne of two future cities, destined for great and heroic deeds. He's a descendant of the greatest hero our world has ever known, a saviour and creator of modern society. He can channel eco like no other and I will care for him as if he was my own son.

I love it when daxter refers to himself as “orange lightning.” He should’ve been his own superhero like secret agent clank. But alas we all know which series became more popular right?

I didn’t play these games as a kid, but I’d imagine that it must have been so exciting to play Jak 2 for the first time and be blown away by how much better the character models look compared to the first game. Plus both games run on the same system as well, so you may not have been expecting to see such a graphical leap, either.
Jak 2's sharper graphics certainly was a wonderful upgrade!
Judging from the way Tess was on Dexter before she turned into an ottsel, I'd say their relationship was well established regardless. But naughty dog didn't want to end the trilogy on a questionable note so they changed her species.

I kind of had this idea about Taryn she was actually an underground rebel fighter she used the bug exterminating as a front to get into krimson guard territories to steal information weapons enemy tactics placing bombs to blow up barricades or barracks and the mysterious dark warrior program which she never uncovered.
Taryn certainly has some mystery...something felt ''fishy''.
@@VtnVivi I kind of wish there was a sequel to daxter it would take place between Jak 2 and jak 3 Dexter uses his bug exterminating skills to gain access to secret areas to find information to uncover a conspiracy against Jak involvement with the metalheads and the Haven city council corruption and prove Jak's innocence of course at the end of this game the beginning of Jak 3 happens but our heroes learn that count I can't remember his name but you know who I'm talking about is corrupted along with the other councilman and council women.

Daxter's character concept's pretty interesting bro, on the surface to casual fans he come across as just an annoying sidekick, to actual fans he's Jak's best friend and brother, in the Jak universe where a lotta the inhabitants are ruthless and mainly out for themselves Daxter never abandoned Jak despite being cowardly and the first to run from a threat the loyalty still remains, Pecker didn't give no shit and wasn't willing to stay behind for Jak, the misconception's always that only Jak was given a stronger and more complex personality through the games but I see that in Daxter too
Not really a fan of how Jak or Daxter was portrayed in The Lost Frontier, none of them was acting like themselves, Daxter got portrayed like a needy toddler throwing tantrums, the dynamic was different it came off as father-son style between them when they saw each other as buddies, didn't resemble Daxter's wacky personality and edgy mouth either but it don't bother me all that much because I've never considered Lost Frontier as part of the canon

I do feel like if the development of the Lost Frontier was given to Ready at Dawn instead of High Impact Games, it could've been as much of as the Swan Song that Naughty Dog wanted J&D:LF to be, honestly they would've made it better knowing them with other properties and being the main developer of Daxter afterall, being as Passionate with whatever IPs they get a hold of.

Those escort missions in Jak 2 were a pain, especially when every single crimson guard in the whole dang city out to get you lol.
They were fun, especially the occasional hit and miss from the guards, a well timed drift from crashing into them or a civilian (blowing up the ride of course and possibly getting the underground member killed) and of course, using Dax to shoot to clear a way.
That mini game was hard as heck, I always thought that it would give me more precursor orbs, untill I found the last one at that place where you go metal head hunting with Sig.
The leaper lizards was always my favorite mission, ride em orange lighting, ride.
It’s interesting how daxter was never playable in the first original game but in 2 and 3 became more playable. But in II there’s only one instance where it’s on foot and the other 2 in racing and the mini game. You know what I mean at all?

Don't know how you missed a huge plot point of the entire trilogy, but Jak survived the dark warrior program, cause, like the sages observe many times throughout Jak 1, he has a special ability of controlling raw eco. Also by talking to the precursor statues, one says "one of you has the light within" or something similar, implying Jak has some unique power. The sages themselves can't use raw eco, and their years of exposure have altered their appearance. Jak however has this unique ability, seen throughout gameplay, where we can simply touch eco and use their effects. It's a subtle but important story point, present throughout all three games, and we can only assume who bestowed it upon him. Maybe it was the precursors themselves who did it, since they were aware of Jak and were keeping an eye on him throughout his entire life. Maybe it's a natural phenomenon that occurs in extremely rare individuals, and Jak was one of them, and that's how he got the attention of the precursors in the first place.
Also that power allows Young Jak to activate the precursor stone (not being pure of heart), while the older Jak was tainted by Dark Eco. His power wasn't meant for Dark eco, since it's corrupting and unpredictable. While for the time being, it helped Jak withstand its effects, in the long run it could eventually destroy him. The precursors prevent that, by giving him light powers in Jak 3, which create a balance within him.
When you think about it,the reason older samos hates daxter is due to his introduction to him when he was the shadow(younger self)when Daxter insulted and called him ole log on a head grandpa green.

Jak's contact with Light Eco from the very first game, counteracted the bad side effects of Dark Eco?
I never thought about this concept before!
I always thought since Jak can channel all Eco powers, it was because of his gift that he did not get completely corrupted by Dark Eco in Jak 2, but you bringing this up makes me think, how Jak using both Light and Dark Eco comes full circle in Jak 3.
Since Jak stated to Dax that the Dark Eco feels far away and that he feels better, meaning his contact with Dark Eco had bothered Jak since the second game, especially how his personality was in the game, it wasn't until 3 that we started to get the ole heroic Jak back, especially after his contact with Light Eco and some soul searching.
Because Jak really was more of an Anti-Hero in Jak 2.
It never was stated( at least not to my knowledge) why Jak couldn't use his other Eco powers in Jak 2 (I thought it was due to his exposure to Dark Eco probably canceled them out) and Jak 3? 🤔
Can't be because the other sages being gone, they weren't produced anymore, because the weapons Jak uses contradict this, especially since each gun acts like it's respected Eco power.
Jak being pure of heart could potentially have been the cause of him surviving through the warrior program. But...I still do feel like all that light eco played a role! And Merry Christmas :D

he didn’t actually lose his powers, they were tainted sure, but he still has all of his abilities, ND during the alpha stages of the game wanted to include the powers but possibly due to bugs and improper implementation they scrapped that very early on as they couldn’t figure out how to make them fit or function right, in game it is never stated he lost his powers (it’s purely because of gameplay reasons and early development issues), though as for the sages most of them are well and truuuly D.E.D dead, though that doesn’t mean new ones can’t be found/made.
i believe that due to Jak’s bloodline which let’s face it might as well make him a demi-God, he was able to resist the experimentation, it doesn’t mean he was unaffected though, according to both the oracle and seem eventually the Dark eco WOULD destroy him, thanks to said oracle he had gained more control over his transformation, but he was still slowly being destroyed, at least he was before being given his light powers which balanced the instability saving his mind body and spirit from total annihilation, though Jak is Definitely not pure of heart, he stole the fisherman’s speedboat, dragged along his bestfriend to share the blame with, disobeyed samos, murdered tons of enslaved lurkers, and doomed the planet to be engulfed in war with an alien threat that nearly destroyed the precursors themselves! on top of being indirectly responsible for the deaths of possibly thousands, not including those killed by the metal heads after the sabotage done to the shield wall (including poor vin)…. if you ask me if Jak was raised by people who actually gave a shit about his behavior than maybe he would be more of a selfless hero, and would have a better outlook on life in general, including how he views himself and how others see him.
While I do agree with Jak not loosing his powers due to Dark Eco, I gotta disagree on him not being pure of heart and agree with my boy Vi here on that.
( But I'm mainly just expressing my opinion, having actually played the series before, so here's my personal view)

Yes, Jak along with Dax did take the boat without permission, but that doesn't make a person "non" pure of heart.
Everyone makes mistakes, but that doesn't make them bad, even people who do have pure hearts make the wrong decisions sometimes, but does not count them out as "tainted" because they're not choosing to continue to do wilfully bad deeds.
Yeah, Jak was making bad choices in Jak 2 in the beginning of the game, only focusing on revenge, but later on during the final act, the good in Jak started to resurface again, making it clear that he wasn't fully corrupted by Dark Eco, as it really did just affect his personality and everything else was him making his own decisions.
I even need to bring up Jak 3 lol.
All in all, it is just fictional characters and every fan views differently, but I respect your opinion dude. :)
In case this hasn't been mentioned in the comments yet, Daxter also had an easter egg appearance in the PSP game "Invizimals: The Lost Tribes", where a specific creature can be evolved a third time turning into Daxter.
Daxter was basically a dark maker for a short amount of time if you think about it.
The Darkmakers were corrupted Precursors (Ottsels) touched by dark eco. So true dark makers probably looked like what dark Daxter looked like.
Daxter is my favorite character of Jak and Daxter game franchise. Because he's very funny. LOL 😂
Another fun fact about Jak & Daxter is that The Last of Us began as a Jak & Daxter Reboot back in 2013

There's always the case of, both Jak and Daxter being orphans and Samos raising them along Keria ( probably after her mother died) that pretty much sums it up, because ND never bothered to mention his family lineage.

One thing is still unclear, during Jak 2 Metal head leader is doing his best to get his hands on Precurssor stone, which he say its egg, if Daxter does have Precurssor form, how come Metal head leader does not cares about Daxter at all?

While I don't like Dark Daxter and how that was handled in TLF, him being mutated by more Dark Eco is not a bad concept in and of itself. For all we know that form could be him beginning to turn into a Dark Maker. Just keep on exposing him to more and more Dark Eco and he'll become less and less ottsel. As for why he was able to transform while Jak wasn't? I imagine Precursors are just that much better at channeling Eco than humans. Edit: Ah dang, should have waited to the end, lmao.
As for Errol, I always figured that if the Baron had a Dark Warrior Program going, perhaps he had other warrior projects going in parallel to it. A Cyber Warrior Program perhaps? The Baron never seemed like the kind of person that would put all of his eggs into one basket to me.

It's rather shocking that Naughty Dog themselves were the ones responsible for the shockingly terrible whole Lost Frontier idea (plot, setting, characters). I ll never consider it canon though

What i mean is that daxter was keeping jak sane. As in who else made him smile or laugh every so offen? You could say keria but how offen does that happen? Not much people made jak smile or laugh but besides daxter. Daxter stays with jak 24/7 and keeps him in check even in his dark form. Its like how black widow can make hulk turn him back into bruce banner. Black widow is daxter and hulk is dark jak

Jak X- Aw you should have mentioned the unlockable Daxter based vehicle the Daxtermmobile.
The Lost Frontier- You neglected some good playability and important roles Daxter played in this game outside just Dark Daxter segments. I expected TLF to get the short-end of the stick since the majority of the fanbase hates it, but it's not fair. I can't recall the story moments too well, I just remembered using him was a necessity for progression in important moments, like chasing Skyheed, and accessing one of those larger facilities. One notable gameplay mechanic that should have been mentioned is the Daxterjack. It's a new and favored feature which allows the player to not only get more scrap from planes than shooting them down but is also an alternative method to destroying them than just shooting. -TLF has its cons, but there are still handful of pros from the game as well.-
Dark Daxter- He couldn't revert his form at will until the end of the game. Jak also never knew about his new form until the end, but when he did see it he said something but just not much. (This is more of a general point->) As for the DD form itself, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the concept and there is no contradiction with the lore from the trilogy. Jak 3 explicitly confirmed that even Daxter's godlike race the Precursors couldn't control Dark Eco, and more importantly, were warped by it. Dark Daxter was warped because of additional exposure to dark eco, just as the Dark Precursors were. Now sure, Daxter's appearance may differ, but there's two important factors to consider with that. *Firstly,* we don't know how long the Dark Precursors (DP) were exposed to Dark Eco. It's implied, actually, that the DP messed with it for an extremely long time, and what happens when you're exposed to substances like Dark Eco for an extended period of time? The transformative effects get stronger and stronger. It's basic science. Evolution has branches, there isn't just one state, it's constantly evolving. So Daxter is clearly in some earlier stages of what a Dark Maker aka Dark Precursor should look like. *Secondly,* it's also possible the Dark Makers (DM) from Jak 3 have equipped themselves with (dark) Precursor armor, which you know something Daxter doesn't have. Parts of their physical design support this (if you look at them, esp their faces which resemble their signature robots), as especially well as their lore- the Precursors are known to constantly be in use of Precursor artifacts; it's their thing. Jak 3 is filled with dark eco infused metal/armor, and Seem calls one object that looks very similar to what the DM grunts look like "an abomination". So then imagine how possible it is that the DMs look the way they do because of both their superiorly longer exposure to Dark Eco (like Gol and Maia, but unlike Jak and Tym) than Daxter and fitting themselves with Precursor armor.
In the end, it's a bit of a premature idea that Daxter not looking like a Dark Maker is this gigantic problem but mainly the one that concludes that Daxter's ability to become a dark creature is nonsensical. The Dark Maker's existence and lore rationalizes Dark Daxter, whether they look identical or not. The point is no-one is really safe from the transformative effects of Dark Eco. And I mean really, the only reason Daxter was blessed in TPL was because he was only exposed to it once and didn't keep messing with it like Gol & Maia and the DM's did.
Daxter easter eggs- I think you missed Daxter's cameo in R&C 2016. Is it movie exclusive or also in the game?
Daxter in spinoffs- _PlayStation Move Heroes_ is whatever (Daxter, and Jak, look really good in that game though), but _PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale_ deserved a bit more coverage, as Daxter actually has a couple of attacks in the game (all of which uses his name too), something you didn't see in the JaD trilogy, which makes this unique quality to this spinoff really cool. During Jak's side grab, Daxter distracts an opponent by stomping away on them as Jak winds up his punch. The second, strangely enough, is the spinkick, which at the end of Jak's animation Daxter stretches around to give an extra final hit.
Still an amazing video, though. And the part at the end are actually some great story ground to address in a sequel (or reboot).

There needs to be a Playstation All Stars Battle Royale 2 game
In fact PSP in general was very much a fun and underrated console too I think. Kingdom hearts birth by sleep, god of war chains of Olympus and ghost of Sparta, ratchet and clank size matters, secret agent clank, daxter, jak and daxter the lost frontier, resistance retribution, as well as killzone liberation. PS vita just couldn’t compare do you agree too?

Man seeing ND put out an old E3 video of J&D and Sony tweeting a random video of a dude turning on a PS2 to play J&D for his 20th anniversary im just sitting there like F___ !!! all that sh!! Wheres the remake announcement for Jak & Daxter like Crash & Spyro got for there 20th anniversary's. This is by far the worst 20th anniversary I've ever seen for a game series.
How could they have had nothing planned for the 20th anniversary knowing that it was coming, heck Insomniac did more for Jak & Daxter that they put him in a PS5 R&C game even if it was an easter egg. Why not give the franchise to another developer to do a trilogy remake or at least one more game in the series.
Those J&D PS2 emulated games on PS4 should of been pushed back to its 20th anniversary and a proper port instead. Great video by the way man

What do you think of the new uncharted trailer? Now I know it’s meant to be younger versions of pre-established characters but mark Wahlberg as sulley feels weird. The moustache at the end of the new trailer feels so cheap I think! Tom Holland will ace it as young drake I’d like to think.

Naughty Dog had only started development for The Lost Frontier but was outsource to High Impact Games since they were busy building Uncharted Drake's Fortune
