- I get it. Clowns are scary, invade your dreams, and can scar a person for life. But what if said clown just wants to be a Royal? And their voice resonates like an angels? And he's disarmingly funny? And he's backed by Postmodern Jukebox's supreme sound?
PMJ and Puddles is at it again with a fantastic cover of "Royals" by Lorde. I had no idea how they were going to pull this off, but the dastardly clown found a way!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Postmodern Jukebox featuring Puddles Pity Party performing "Royals”.

Wow! Thanks!!!
Pin this man! Glad to see you here Puddles!
Puddles has arrived!!
Hi Puddles! Love your stuff!
You're seriously impressive, definitely the best singing clown I've ever had the pleasure to listen to.
Love you Puddles!
I worked at a venue where Puddles did a show a few years ago. The guy who was setting up the video system for the show couldn't get it right, so I was called in to fix it. I met Puddles, we chatted for a few, and then I got the system working right. During the show, he would go out into the audience, grab a person, bring them onstage, and do a song for them. It usually ended up with him singing Hapy Birthday to them, but he would call them Kevin.
Anyway, he came out into the audience, grabbed me, took me onstage, and slid a costume on me. He then sang something (I couldn't hear what it was since he used in-ear monitors.) After that, he sang Happy Birthday to me, called me Kevin, then whispered into my ear, "You rock."
Big Mike, the guy who plays Puddles, is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet!
Cool, really cool!
I wanted him (Puddles) to win on AGT sooo bad ... but, he didn't. He was a sore loser. I understand that he had high expectations of himself ... and I still enjoy seeing him perform.
@@BigChuckMeister that last song did him in unfortunatly. i think it was royals even ?
@@BigChuckMeister Puddles wasn't being a sore loser at all. He always runs offstage at the end of that song. You can see it at the end of this video and find him doing the same thing in news appearances well before he was on AGT. It's just part of the bit. He is a clown, after all.The guy is a pro and pure class. I almost enjoy seeing things go wrong at his live shows (he's a perfectionist and HATES it) because he handles things so smoothly and with such humor.
@@chriskwakernaat2328 It was. I personally don't think it was the best choice, simply because he'd already done the "unexpected song from young female artist" bit with "Chandelier." His version of "I Want You to Want Me" (perfect for the persona) or his Chris Cornell tribute "When I'm Down" would have worked better IMO.
I just love the ending, he sings "I rule..." and then he just walks off, deciding now it ends, showing how he rules in this rendition
The back-up singers also playing it, just staring straight ahead, not looking over like "he's leaving?"
True control; he doesnt have to ask to rule. He just does
From wishing to live that fantasies, to actually going to achieve it. That’s what’s in my head about his cover.
We saw Puddles perform live. Before taking the stage, he worked his way through the audience and greeted every single person, pausing for photos any time someone asked. He really appreciates his fans. A real gem.
Is there another human being on this planet that gets so visibly enthused by music as Elizabeth? I love it !
She is working a very different vein and drawing from very different traditions, but Rick Beato and she are very similar in their enthusiasm and pleasure in music. His reaction to Joni Mitchell’s Amelia is on the same level as Elizabeth’s reactions. Both of them are treasures who keep opening up new ways of listening to me.
@@12DanDaniel I´ve never heard of Rick Beato, but I´ll take your word for it.
No. But also, yes. 😜 Check out @Key of Geebz for a really thorough, yet completely different type of reaction from a veteran music/engineering industry professional. In fact, he has done reaction vids to a few of the same ones @The Charismatic Voice has, so it's fun to compare! Check out the Wardruna "Helvegen" one, plus the Jinjer "Pisces." 🤓
@@mistersmeagol259 I have seen a few of @Key of Geebz´s videos, but didnt get very much out of him tbh. And if you have watched one Pisces reaction you pretty much have seen them all, the funniest one being Julia Nilon Ithink.
@@hansemanuelsson9005 Search for him here on CZcams. Ricks "What makes this song great" series is a definite must for music fans. He's certainly not as pretty as Elizabeth, but don't hold that against him. 😉
Elizabeth getting frazzled at the end when puddles walks off had me cracking up
As much as I live watching her analysis, I admit that I watched this one almost specifically for her reaction to the ending.
He's done worse. Or maybe it's "better". Lol.
He has the audience finish it during his live shows.
I guess it's cause Puddles rules. So he ended at that part.
No matter his schtick, he'll always be an Atlanta treasure. He has worked so hard on all of his personas/bands, he deserves the recognition he's getting because he has a beautiful voice and many talents as a musician.
Watching her expressive face is half of the fun. She really enjoys this.
YES !!!
Spoken like someone who can't have an true expression of their own.
Why can't you watch a video and have that be enough? Why do you need to watch someone else watch a video? So you know how to feel about it?
and yet, here you are. @@rasro
Puddles “sound of silence” is amazing
One of the keys of Puddles' Pity Party is that he likes to make things just... a little bit awkward on occasion.
The bits of his live show I've seen definitely seem to leverage that.
Seeing him playing with the pompoms on his costume makes me vaguely uncomfortable.
I've had the good fortune to see Puddles live twice now and he's incredible. He has a beautiful rendition of Hallelujah on his own channel with a lovely music video that I'd love to see you check out!
Yeah, his rendition of Hallelujah is phenomenal!
I didn't expect to see Stupendium here, but that's a welcome surprise. And you are absolutely right!
hey stupes
Looking forward to
How lucky are you, I hope some day he can come down to Australia.
Pronunciation .. yep .. one of the reasons I love his covers .. I can actually hear and understand the lyrics and he adds a meaning/story/emphasis I sometimes miss in some "original" covers/releases .. this cover and Pentatonix's are likely the two best I have found ..
The piano's counter play during the chorus is what kills me everytime. It makes the line "We'll never be royals" seem both tragic and triumphant at the same time.
His enunciation is astounding, his voice is so clean and rich and you can hear and understand every word. I love Puddles' singing on everything. Like this song he takes something I was not impressed with and turns it into something special
I have had the pleasure of seeing Puddles live. His voice was so powerful and just purely incredible. I lack the words to describe it. His live performance is so much more amazing then anything that can be heard on video.
He's a genius! Hands down the most talented preformer in recent years.
For recommends on Puddles, "Space Oddity" has to be in the list somewhere. Just another incredible number. Also, his mash-up of "Pinball Wizard" and "Folsom Prison Blues" is pretty stellar.
I would definitely add his PMJ cover of "All the Small Things" . It is phenomenal!
And the reverse mashup of "Folsom Prison Blues" with "Pinball Wizard"

Also My Heart Will Go On/Mettalica mashup. He really rocks there.
If we're talking mashups, then Stairway to Gilligan's Island!
Concur
His live version of Chandelier on America's Got Talent is absolutely incredible.
Gotta be her next reaction of him
That performance made him famous. First time I saw him. Blew me away.
You called it!!!!
It's a must watch performance and blew away the judges and audience!
@@jemimus I "discovered" him before his AGT performance by following PMJ. they have a bunch of great singers come through. One of my favorites is Morgan James.
Puddles performs miracles: he sang The Who's "Pinball Wizard" set to Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues"... and then did the reverse. Absolutely none of it sounds out of place, with mad props to whomever did the arrangements.
I get a thrill when you love a song that I love. It's very gratifying to see another person appreciate something that you appreciate.
A 6'8" jazz-singing clown does sound like something out of a horror film. Perhaps only Elizabeth and her awakening psychic powers stand between us and the cotton candy sweetness of his voice. (Next on Battle Bard and Dungeon Master)
Also, how awesome would a Puddles-fronted metal band be? Puddles of Blood maybe? He goes from the sad clown to the mad clown. Would be especially nice if his former PMJ duet partner Hayley showed up for a few tracks. Regardless, I would love to see an interview with Puddles because there is obviously a very talented and creative artist behind that gimmick.
@@oglschmitt Yeah, either that, or he's a complete looney. Either way, I'm good with it.
The Sound of Silence
Simon & Garfunkel = a warning
David Draimon = anger the warning was ignored
Puddles = sad that it's still being ignored
puddles Sound of Silence is great too
I would say it's more resignation then sadness...

Puddles is TOPS! His voice is an inspiration for the ages. The look on your face when the disgust level of Puddles rises to the point where he just ups and leaves.. . Priceless. THAT'S showmanship, my lady.
Love Puddles and PMJ. And how cool are the back up singers. Just step-in' and snapping' then coming in so perfectly and beautiful. Love it.
I love watching your reactions. Your childlike love of music and mature and educated explanations are such a beautifully unique combination.
Very well put.
I remember Lorde saying on Reddit that this was her favorite cover.
This and KZ Tandigan
PMJ & Puddles version of All the Small Things (Blink 182) was the one that held me in awe, showing his range from a more buttery deep beginning into the power at the end. Absolutely love it!
Whenever I have a depressing day, I watch you to react to it. Your joy of talent so displayed on your fave and body movements washes my sadness away. I recommend this song 2019 when I 1st joined
Scott is a genius at couching the singer's phrasing with little ornaments while nudging the song along.
Puddles loves "Royals". He has two more videos on his own channel of punk and new wave versions of the song. During a concert last month he also performed a New Orleans jazz style version. I'm bummed that I'll likely be in a meeting during this premier, but I'll catch up on it as soon as I'm free.
Early in your comments you mention his enunciation. Of all his superb performance qualities, that's what struck me the most when I first "discovered" him and started watching his videos a year or so ago. I can't think of another singer whose verbal clarity and crispness begins to approach his. He is a towering talent, literally!
I so love and respect Sir Puddles intelligence and vocal abilities!
Amazing performance!
WOW ! ! ! ! ! !
Champagne to you Sir Puddles!
Thank you for your dissection of Sir Puddle's performance!
I really love your mind, heart and soul. Your face is great too!
Your understanding of music and singing helps me grow and understand what I'm heading.
Thank You so much ✌😘👍

This is great! Puddles changed my world 7 years ago. He really recreates great songs
I love that we share that world changing together OSO! She really gets Puddles doesn't she?
@@xtravert2012 yes! She's excellent at breaking down all the aspects of singing and performance. Check out her singing sometime. This is my Puddles intro song, 7 years ago!
@@osovagabundo1 lol, both of ours! But we know I Who Have Nothing holds a special place
@@xtravert2012 yep, I went to play that a couple times after this. I'm so glad his recording and production has caught up with him now. Camera videos were fun but his recent stuff has been great.
Ah the classic PMJ - has it really been over 7 years from releasing this? Also noteworthy to mention backup singers Robyn Adele Anderson and Cristina Gatti who are great on their own, and Robyn has continued to make PMJish covers on her own channel.
They were great. E.g. that Klezmer style cover of Talk dirty to me or the 40s style cover of Womanizer. ....
its crazy to see how far they have come. I personally like there old stuff like this so much more. But man they are amazing either way.
Robyn got me hooked on Post Modern Jukebox. Definitely had a crush on her for a while.
@@snowstalker36 she for sure was one of my favorites to. Amazing singer and always looked beautiful as well. Talent and beauty something we do not get now a days as much.
@@friedemannkemm63 She can talk Yiddish to me anytime. ANYWAYS, she is so effortless singer that there wasn't any doubts to subscribe into her channel. Real mindblowing moment was when they did Girls Just Wanna Have Fun with her in Bioshock Infinite style - the game in which making Scott Bradlee discovered PMJ style of music. In Elizabeths words - Super cool!
The piano playing is tremendous. It always blows me away with the way it moves so organically with the timing and variations. It add so much depth.
Yay more Puddles!
Discovered him years ago thnx to PMJ and have been a fan ever since, everyone needs at least one clown in their lives, and puddles is that clown for me!
You should check out "All the small things" as well, its a great version and ofc the humor in the video is spot-on as well.
Oh and also check out his version of Sia's "Chandelier", also a work of art. (and proof he doesnt shy away from hard songs to sing at all)
Thnx for the react Elizabeth, seeing the joy on your face always makes my day :)
If you go down the Puddles worm hole far enough, there is an outdoor festival setting video recorded at night.Puddles leaves the stage , sings to an audience members dog- and the dog is mesmerized.
I'm trying to find this video, but i can't
Don't tease us. Give us the link.
His version of "Hallelujah" is utter perfection. You should definitely check it out.
Those 50 billion other halleluja covers before him has ruined that song forever.
@@Scalemailmailmail There's only a few covers of the song that matter to me. Jeff Buckley's, Puddles', and the cover Myles Kennedy did in honor of Jeff Buckley.
@@peterworth9403 I just wish i never heard those other 50 billion covers :-(
It's only slightly less ruined than "Knockin on heavens door".
@@Scalemailmailmail Fell that 100 percent. But I'm always looking for good covers, so I keep an open mind. It's led to some unexpected gems.
His enunciation is perfect when singing softly or loudly--absolutely amazing.
I am really glad you did puddles. He has such a strong vocal. He is fantastic!
SOOOO happy you're reacting to Puddles. That clown is an absolutely brilliant mixture of fun, tragedy, parody and Human expression in general. All this in the package of a crooning juggernaut with a timeless voice.
I keep going back to his covers of songs I don't like from bands I avoid: Coldplay's "Fix you", and MCR's "Helena", and Abba's "Dancing Queen" are songs I turn my nose up at, but somehow Puddles makes them amazing. So amazing that I keep going back.
Puddles has also made me take another look at Electric Light Orchestra, and made me a fan of them... thanks to his mashup of "Telephone Line" and Adele's "Hello".
That is because some of us are here to experience, create and evolve and some of us others are here teach, herd cats (which I can do)... and gently nudge others toward their destinies.
You NEVER know who you "touch" ... but, he may have been here solely to touch me or others... but he DEFINITELY touched my spirit and kept on track to my destiny.
Thank you PPP
As below stated his version of chandelier is mind-blowing. All of his performances on America's Got Talent are mind-blowing it's worth checking them out
He got screwed on that show!
Scott Bradlee is a master at rearranging songs with that PMJ flair.. And of course Puddles is sublime as usual..
Yes, the pause is brilliant. Remember this is one of the "introductory" videos that first introduced Puddles. He played up the surprise value of coming out as a clown, and then delivering a perfect performance. I love Puddles. Saw him with my daughter at Joe's Pub in NYC - such a great show.
Hi Elizabeth, I'm glad that PMJ and Puddles teamed up for another performance. The clarity of his voice was incredible and the (3) piece band/back-up vocals were great too, especially the piano accompaniment. Thank you, Elizabeth, for this Fun and Fantastic Reaction & Analysis!!! 💙
Elizabeth, I knew you would appreciate this quirky genius of a clown....those of us who get puddles have been fascinated for years and now our fav opera babe taps in and we all love your bionic brow
She needs to see him in person. I can't wait until he's on tour again.
@@oftcrash he played forever here in Atlanta..... time for the politicians to get out of the way and let us heal
I describe his voice as RICH……VERY RICH! His brilliance allows him to be very recognizable when performing, and allows him to walk ANONYMOUSLY IN REGULAR LIFE…..simply brilliant!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I will hear a song and think oh my god, Puddles needs to sing this song. That voice- powerful and range like Elvis
Personal fav Puddles cover is 'All the small things'. He really changes the dynamics of that song so much, it's just awesome.
His sound is so open and it feels so super authentic. Like almost larger than live.
Puddles is simply amazing. The one cover that he did that strikes me sooooo deep is Losing My Religion by REM. There is so much conviction in his eyes and in his voice. I cannot listen to it enough.
Puddles Pity Party is absolutely beautiful and fun and uplifting and brilliant. He gave the best concert I've ever seen. I can't wait to see him again!!!!
Ever since I noticed they follow each other on Twitter I've been dreaming of a Puddles/Devin Townsend collab. 😁
Holy crap that would be amazing. They both have similar cheekiness on stage.
wow - now I'm waiting...
There's a reason that you've never seen the both of them in the same room....
I heard a reliable rumor that him and Devin have been chatting.
Yesssss🤘🤡🤘🤡🤘🤡🤘
You know Mike is good when he's got Robyn Adele Anderson as a backup singer.
His cover of Losing my Religion is heart breaking. One of his most poignant performances. A master class in taking a hit song and reimagining it and making it his own. Reminiscent of some of Eva Cassidy’s best work.
this puddles is truly a true artist ..well rounded in all aspects of showman ship singing projecting the feeling and gestures .but watching you analyze the parts which make him so dynamic make it my favorite video ...so much fun to watch....
Puddle's version of "Stairway to Gilligan's Island" is a must listen. It's a good mashup, and Puddles does a great job.
Clowns still creep me out, but when Puddles sings, it's magical. I imagine him in his lair, with bubbling beakers, and spooky lighting, putting his character together. Fun stuff. haha.
Puddles lives in a fairly normal house, but he apparently built a sweat lodge in his front yard a few months ago.
Puddles has one of those voices I could listen to for hours on end. Listening to him feels like sliding into crisp new sheets on a freshly made bed. You just feel like you are wrapped in wonderfulness.
You're channel and reactions bring me so much joy! Thank you!
He does a "Chillin" version of Crazy Train. I could actually understand the lyrics.
I'll ck out
Highly recommend reaction to his version of Chandelier, also his Sound of Silence has a great ending too.
Tanks for your clip with the analysis. Your energy in combinations with the songs, I love it! 😀 👍🏻
Definitely one of the best acts that I’ve seen live. So much joy
Seriously his most overlooked performance with the gang from PMJ is his rendition of Blink 182’s All the small things!
I think that she would also enjoy Leo Moracchioli aka Frog Leap Studios

Leo is an absolute genius!!!
Everything Leo does is fantastic, completely agree here
I just love seeing the pure joy in your reactions to his singing, and enjoy the commentary and explanation of his technique.
Isn't he like one of the most surprisingly impressive performers ever! Chills goosebumps laughs tears Puddles brings it all in one song.
I was hoping you would react to this one! also, their version of Sia's "Chandelier" featuring Dani Armstrong is a must hear.
I think their version with Puddles is better.
@@magnusbergqvist2123 His version was the first where I could finally understand the lyrics.
@@magnusbergqvist2123 Right, partygirl Puddles swinging from the chandalier... I would really like to see that, but the performance is great.
Your analysis is amazing. The attention to detail is phenomenal.
Seeing him live is so fun, it's half concert half comedy show without him uttering a word. The best one man performance I've seen
Puddles singing All the Small Things is packed with emotion.
But my absolute favorite PMJ arrangement is Miche Braden singing a blues cover of Purple Rain. It's just her and Scott Bradlee accompanying her on piano, and it's absolutely exquisite.
All the small things is my favorite of his and absolutely amazing. It made me like blink-182 again just because of Puddle's. (his version is better)
It is! It and Jessie J version on Singer 2018 are masterpieces!!
Anything with Miche Braden is amazing!
I've only discovered this channel a couple of days ago and not only do I love it, but it's the first channel I've followed where I turned on the alerts for new videos. Your videos are wondrous, keep up the great work.
Her excitement and enthusiasm are infectious. For someone who comes from the classical/operatic music world, her joy in discovering non-conventional singers is amazing.
You've made my day! Thanks for letting me laugh with you 🤗
Aaah nice!! I'm really happy you made a reaction from this!!! 😊
His walk off is the equivalent of a mic drop. :)
Quick side note: Both of the background singers in this have done solo performances with PMJ. There is a lot to discover there. I don't know Cristina Gatti that well, but Robyn Adele Anderson has her own project on CZcams where she does similar things as PMJ does.
They both perform with him on "Team" also by Lorde.
Her Drunk in Love is classic!!
I just love your reactions Elizabeth! I am so glad I came across your videos- you make my day! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!
Just discovered your channel today. Thank you for what you do. This song and your reactions brought tears to my eyes. I have very visceral reactions to music (movies as well) and often feel "wrong" about it. Most people I know don't show outwardly how it makes them feel. I love to dance and sing and don't have many outlets for it outside of my shower. It's gratifying to see you express yourself so openly.
He's had lots of theater experience. His live show is such a treat!!
Scott Bradlee helps so many people to really shine.
Puddles and PMJ are amazing. Thanks for this--I always learn so much from your insights and your enthusiasm is always contagious!
Another great review of a great performance that I've enjoyed many, many times.
You need to finish the PML & Puddles songs with "All the Small Things" by Blink-182. But if you want a surprise, he did a Smoosh-up of "My Heart Will Go On" (Celine Dion) and "One" Metallica. Finally, if you want what Puddles calls a "sad-gasm," he covered "Helena" by My Chemical Romance.
i love his takes on "all the small things" & "helena" in particular as well! the first time i ever truly *heard* the words to "helena" was when i first heard puddles cover the song.
watching this just reminded my how much i appreciate the heck outta his enunciation; it adds such a distinctive touch to his vocals, as many contemporary artists seem to be going for the opposite aesthetic.
i also am fond of his rendition of "where is my mind" (first time i could hear ALL the lyrics in that song, haha), & his various tom waits' covers hold a special place in my heart. ♥️
And the one many people seem to have missed, but it's brilliant... his performance of "I Started A Joke" on the Houston Public Media CZcams channel.
His best work with PMJ has got to be Blink 182's "All the Small Things". It's such a brilliant performance.
I really just wanted to say how much of a pleasure it was to watch your video! Your expressiveness and excitement being so open and visible really inspire the same emotions in the watcher.
Just wanted to tell you you're a beautiful person, and have a great day :)
Having seen this video numerous times....I was waiting for your reaction to the end!! LOL
@The Charismatic Voice - When you spoke of P3's enunciation and keeping his vowels aligned in the mask, I heard that P3 has that oldschool pre-mic-everything, sing-it-to-the-cheap-seats Broadway voice in his ample toolbox. Those backward covered tones you spoke of get accoustically swallowed by the rows and rows of padded audience bodies. At points in his performances, P3 gives a delightful reminder of Ethel Merman with his bright forward tone, and when he opens up.
Give Merman's "There's No Business Like Show Business" a quick listen.
Broadway voice developed another technique to mix volume with expression, a sung "stage whisper", allowing "soft" emotional phrases to still be heard and understood in the third balcony. I can't help hearing some of this in P3's flawless enunciation.
trivia: Where stage actors and vocalists developed techniques to sound soft while still projecting, oldschool-trained movie/TV actors developed an opposite technique to simulate different levels of shouting, using rasp, gravel and fry, to not distort their lines or blow out the soundman's ears. They actually practiced for hours in front of a mic and gauges. It sounds like the needles should all be pinned to the top but are actually steady in the middle of the normal speech range.
Well, you can give that credit to opera training too, they 've been singing to the cheap seats for centuries w/o amplication.
I know that covers of Chandelier are often risky and commonly failures, but Puddles smashes that song.
Also, Elizabeth being offended at Puddles walking off from the last line looked exactly like me the first three times she stopped the Rule of Nines video before "I did it," lol.
I remember that one. Fun fun fun! Good one Jacob! Thanks!
I keep returning to your great reaction to this awesome song! You are having so much fun and it is quite addictive. Oh Puddles, what have you done? Keep it up!
Crazy train (chill edition)- Puddles Pitty Party
I saw him in concert about 2 years ago and before he started he actually went through in shook every single hand at the venue.
"He doesn't even finish?! NYYYYOOOOO!"
I’m so impressed with him and his work thank you for doing this
I adore your positivity.....You bring so much brightness to the world and my life. Thank you for all you do.....Your videos are the best way for me to relax after a long day working as a RN in the Emergency Room.
His performance of "Hallelujah" is phenomenal
His cover of Chandelier with PMJ is amazing also, the live version is what it is but don't skip over the full recorded version with PMJ if you get to it 😄
Thanks for the emotions from you - wonderful to watch -
his version/mashup of "COME SAIL AWAY/LET IT GO" is unbelievably epic and beautiful in every way
Puddles is the best. It's interesting how his clown persona is part of the performance. Would the whole thing work as well if he were just a guy in a suit singing the same song? I don't think so. This is not a knock on his singing, at all. He'd still be amazing. But the clown angle adds something, doesn't it?
You really owe it to yourself to see the live show if you ever get a chance. He does a lot to build up the music that doesn't get conveyed online. I fully expect intense, emotional musicality to become a faction in clowning and mimery for the history of the arts moving forward. After all, it would be a shame if our grandchildren didn't get to experience what he does.
