@@philipwebb5065 I really think you guys are reading too much into it. There are reasons for this document. Christians are being slaughtered for their beliefs. He has a purpose and this is not a theological treatise. Nothing in this document refutes Catholic teaching. Yes he uses the term infinite dignity but John Paul II did as well, though not in a document. I think we just need to give him a little break. The church recently confirmed that Catholics cannot be Masons. I mean, as a human being I have similarity to an ax murderer but that doesn't mean I am one.

Fernandez's talk here is pure sophistry as far as I can see. Whether human beings have "infinite dignity" or not is beside the point -- and as usual, he just creates confusion with his UN-esque explanations. (I wonder sometimes if he even understands the faith at a basic level.). Rather, we have a dignity given to us as children of God, but we can cut ourselves off from God's grace by our own actions (the radical possibility of mortal sin). It is precisely grace that gives us our true dignity; apart from God, we can do nothing...and our imbued dignity is gravely diminished if not snuffed out entirely.
The unbridled arrogance and worldliness of these prelates is sad to see but not surprising. Pray for them. God bless.

Do these people not read scripture?! In the old testament it says , if a righteous man turn from his ways and commits evil he shall die in his sin . Ezekiel 18:24-32. It’s all there. Lastly I heard THE BEST response to people who ask what kind of God sends people to help. This priest said that God in His Mercy created hell for those who do not want anything to do with Him. He went on by saying why would someone who spent his whole life rebelling against God and even hating Him, why would that person want to spend an eternity with Him? That made so much sense to me.

What's important to understand is apokatastasis is an ancient speculation, found in some form in St. Gregory of Nyssa among others, and not simply the product of 1960s Nouvelle Theologie folk, but something with deep roots in Christian theology -- at least in the East. However it is equally important to know it has never been held to be dogma in Eastern Orthodoxy.

Pure heresy suggesting that the notion of hell is a cult belief! Hell is a reality. We need to pray for the pope and these apostates preaching heresy. Criticise what they have to say but pray also that they do not discover the reality of hell. God does not condemn anyone to hell…people condemn themselves through unrepentant mortal sin. Our Lord judges us, we condemn ourselves unless we live the truth of the Gospels. We’re followers of Christ, and this discussion shown on the interview misses the point. It is not a philosophical debate but is a theological one based on doctrinal truths. What was true for our forefathers yesterday remains true for us today and for our children tomorrow. You know them by their fruits, a good shepherd would not lead us astray but to keep our eyes and thoughts fixed firmly on heaven.

Apokatastasis was taught by many Church Fathers, but denied by many, as well. It was probably condemned by the 5th Ecumenical Council, but there is a lot of ambiguity about that Council.
But the Lord Jesus Christ talked about Hell more than anyone in the Bible.

Our Lady of Fatima herself said many souls go to hell as no one prays for them and most souls go to hell through sins of the flesh than any other sin. Also the sin against the Holy Ghost is the refusal of Gods mercy and that refusal is what condemns them. I mean we might as well scrap confession the way these guys are talking 🙄

@John : the Gospels are filled with Jesus referencing Hell as being "eternal" "unquenchable". The Bible also states that chasm between Heaven and Hell can never be crossed by those in either location. Those souls who enter Hell remain there, for eternity.

@@seamusweber8298I understand what you are saying. My point is that apocatastisis, as understood by many saints, such as St Gregory of Nyssa, does not mean a free ride to heaven no matter how you live or what you believe. We will all be judged and have to answer for our lives. The hope is that only by the Grace of God through Jesus Christ all may, perhaps over many ages, come to Him. Then, as scripture says, “God will be all in all.” (1 Cor 15:28) and, “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive”. (1 Cor 15:22)

@@JohnRoetzer Hi John, I fully agree that being Catholic does not mean that we are guaranteed salvation. We are not. Being Catholic means that we are eligible for salvation but we have to live virtuous lives too so that, please God, we may be granted salvation. However if a soul enters Hell, that soul will remain there for eternity. Scripture is unambiguous on that core teaching. Thanks

Is this because pope Francis said he likes to think of hell as empty? Would it have been better if he said he likes to think of hell as overflowing with people?
By the way, only the origenist apocatastasis is condemned.
St Gregory of Nysa and st Maximus the confessor, both Catholic saints, supported some form of apocatastais, where people go to hell but are eventually restored.

    Luke 16 22:26
“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us."

This is what the devil tells me before my return back to my faith. This is so disturbing to say the least.

Infinite Dignity comes directly from Infinite Purity and ONLY God has it, with the very high dignity of the Virgin Mary coming directly from God's Purity in her. In lowering degrees, Saint Joseph, and from there the True Saints, then most of us, and then lowest dignity in those in Hell, as they are the lowest in purity.
No, those in Hell do not totally lose the dignity of being made in the image and likeness of God, which is why they suffer so terribly as unrepentant sin is the most anti-human thing there is.
Yes, human rights come from God-given dignity but we can progressively renounce that dignity down to a very low degree by renouncing God and embracing unrepentant sin. True Repentance and Confession is the Sacrament of Holy Dignity, which is still NOT infinite but conditional on our faithfulness to God until death.

God does not condemn us to hell it is our choice to choose evil and turn our backs on God that lead us to hell. is it now church teaching that if one can unrepentently butchers babies one does not pay for such sins ? So what is the purpose of living good and moral lives, or following the ten commandments when self denial and taming ones' appetites has no merits. This is an injustice and a mockery of all the saints and martyrs of the church . I am probably too simple minded to understand this new theology/philosophy that the modern church is teaching , cause during my time it was simple it was good and evil , black or white. Truth was never gray . Granted that He is a merciful God , but that doesnt give men the liberty to dictate upon God how He is to hand out His mercy . simply on the excuse of our " human weaknesses" . This is the devils lie .

How is this possible? How do you get to this juncture, after many years journey to popehood?

Fernandez is basically saying that Jesus founded a cult. There was no purpose in Jesus' birth, death and resurrection if there is no need for salvation.
Some people may go overboard with personal guilt and being overly judgemental of others, but that does not mean there is no right and wrong. What are the consequences if there is no morality?
Bad choices can create hell on earth, usually for other people. If God is truly just and truly loves the victims, then if the faithful choose right behaviour, it protects other people from harm and offers them opportunities to be rescued. If there is no condemnation of wrong behaviour, then you create poor people and victims. So what is the point of " going out to the poor". To do what?

As you have said many times we need to pray the Devine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary for the salvation of souls. The church should be about salvation first then works.
