  • For the search of ship wreck the submarine "Euronaut" is equipped with two sonars. The one is a 2D-Imaging forward -looking multibeam sonar. The other one is a side-scan and down-vision sonar combined with a sea chart plot and GPS receiver. The handling of both gadget has been trained on these trips in april 2018. It was also the first time the submarine conducted mid-water maneuvers in a constant distance over ground, where side-scan sonar works best. But this kind of manually steered operation also needs some exercise.
    "Euronaut" is a private project of a research and diver support submarine built by Carsten Standfuss - a German naval architect. It has been designed between 1988 and 2000. Then it took another 12 years to build it on holidays, weekends and after work. Most systems on board are second hand and homebuilt.
    The sub has overall length of 16 m (52 ft), surface displacement of 57 tons and is capable of diving up to 250 m (820 ft).
    Transit speed is up to 6 knots with a 190 hp diesel engine. Electric drive measures 40 kW.
    The life support system provides air for the crew of six persons for a week. The diving chamber allows saturation dives to the depths similar to the operational depth of the submarine.

    I have so many questions regarding the construction of that beautiful submarine. Excellent work!

    Must be amazing to be a civilian submarine. Using active sonar all the time. Instead of being passive. Makes submarine live so much easier

      @highko Maier not the things they do with their military submarines ^^ But there they can't speak of.

    Brilliant footage guys especially your local helicopter visit checking out your truly amazing submarine! Oh and the operator must have great fun finding new wrecks for the diving team to visit!

    Guys, I know it's kind of hard but I would love to see more submerged navigation videos.

    I have been pricing used pressure tanks at 9' diameter and 38' to 40' long for my pressure hull. How you guys did it is beyond me. The price is unbelievable.

      How much?

      Deep Blue Sea $45,000 for one. That's used too. I found another for $12,000 but it's not what I need. I need at least a 9' diameter so there is room after welding in the support rings, installing the deck and all of the equipment such as compressors, oxygen scrubbers, piping, storage, batteries and so on. I thought about doing a main ballast similar to the way the "Euro" is set up but with two main tanks in the bow following the curve of the hull and two stern with trim tanks. Nothing is set in stone as of yet. I am a welder and I have done some mechanical design so I still need an electrician and maybe a mechanic to help design the engine room. I want to do something truly innovative.

      45 k$ for a used tank seems reasonable depending on where you are and who do you know. The Euronaut's PH was almost twice as expensive back into 2000, but it was professionally built by an external company. And it was brand new.

      Deep Blue Sea yeah I know. I priced a new hull yesterday at about $70,000.

    Do you use dead reckoning or gps for navigation while submerged?

    • @Wrackzeichner
      @Wrackzeichner  Před 6 lety +2

      Neither first, nor second. We can not track our position while submerged. We only can observe our gyroscopic heading, depth and altitude, which is sufficuent for our current operating mode. The sub does not run long distances when submerged. It goes surfaced to the area of the wreck, runs search patterns with the side scan, down vision and forward looking multibeam sonars, dives, runs another pattern submerged to find a good place for bottoming and bottoms.
