Das Boot 2015: Living On A Research Submarine, Germany - September 2015

  • Wreck diving expedition at the Baltic Sea off German coast near Wismar. September 2015. So far the deepest and longest dive with the private submarine "Euronaut". The target is an 180 years old wreck of a wooden sailing cargo ship, which used to transport bricks.
    "Euronaut" is a private project of a research and diver support submarine built by Carsten Standfuss - a German naval architect. It has been designed between 1988 and 2000. Then it took another 12 years to build it on holidays, weekends and after work. Most systems on board are second hand and homebuilt.
    The sub has overall length of 16 m (52 ft), surface displacement of 57 tons and is capable of diving up to 250 m (820 ft).
    Transit speed is up to 6 knots with a 190 hp diesel engine. Electric drive measures 40 kW.
    The life support system provides air for the crew of six persons for a week. The diving chamber allows saturation dives to the depths similar to the operational depth of the submarine.

    Interesting, how do they scrub co2 and add 02 and maintain volume in the bell. Also what depth are they at /mix are they on? Standard air? Do they decompress on ean? Lots and lots of questions.

    • @Wrackzeichner
      @Wrackzeichner  Před 4 lety +5

      The bell is operated by the divers themselves. Two electric driven CO2 scrubbers, adjustable constant flow O2 supply, CO2 and O2 measuring equipment. Current max depth is 30 m because everything happens with compressed air. No gas switching. At the current divers experience level and with the weekend-hobby-crew it's just as good as it can get with reasonable costs. Originally, dives below 100-150 msw were planned, but the preparation for the necessary gas infrastructure never happened. Actually the current state is the first testing stage. The project never grew above those shallow test depths, despite some of the divers of the crew are capable of trimix and/or rebreather bounce dives.

Etc etc. Sorry to ask such questions.. You guys are probably busy :)

    • @Wrackzeichner
      @Wrackzeichner  Před 6 lety +8

      There have been plans for a larger 100-ton commercial design for a certain customer based on Euronaut, but it didn't ever passed the early stage design phase. Euronaut itself has a pressure hull with a bolted flange behind the engine room bulkhead and all the cables and pipes in this area are detachable. So it is possible to build an additional section of 2 m length and enter it here. There is a video on my channel showing this flange.

    What type of Compressor for filling Diving Tanks onboard do you have onboard?
    What about blowing the tanks of the U-boat when you go to the surface, is that achieved by compressed air stored in commercial 50 litre tanks or smaller?

    • @Wrackzeichner
      @Wrackzeichner  Před 2 lety +1

      The compressed air in 50 liter cylinders is used for blowing the MBT (main ballast tanks) and for BIBS (Built-In Breathing System). Therefore there are two compressors, both producing compressed air suited for breathing.

      Maximum surfaced speed is about 6 knots. Typically transit surfaced speed is 5,5 to 6 knots. Submerged theoretically 5 knots. Shallow watershere don't allow to run the sub submerged at full speed without danger of grounding etc.

      From a private point if view, a SUB owner won't have to go to the government or a government to lease an abnormally expensive vessel and pay it's crew. In addition, most subs of this size are operated from a mother ship without the endurance a sub like Euronaut has.
      Is it necessary? On a prrsonal scale of these guys? Absolutely, the sub gives them unparalleled flexibility on all levels not avalible on the comercial market. The only down side is that the submarine isn't faster and more fuel efficient.

      Der Schlüssel am Oberdeck wird zur Entfernung von sog. Hafensicherungen benuizt. Diese verschließen Tauchzellenentlüftungsventile und sorgen letztendlich dafür, dass das Boot im Hafen nicht abtauchen kann, selbst wenn jemand versehentlich die Ventilsteuerung anfasst.
