- Today we are exploring some of the top Puerto Rico hidden gems, and we are heading east, to the beautiful town of Humacao, to visit Punta Santiago Nature Reserve.
The Humacao Wildlife Refuge (now called the Punta Santiago Natural Reserve in Humacao) is located on the east coast of Puerto Rico. Within the reserve you’ll find numerous trails for walking, biking and light hiking, long stretches of beach, spectacular views of the coast, lots of fishing opportunities, an area with picnic pavilions, some ruins from the area’s history as a sugar plantation, old bunkers from wars past, and the availability of kayaks and bikes to rent. The reserve has been recently refurbished and now offers kiosks for crafts too. The reserve is not heavily visited, so you may very well have this large area almost all to yourself! If you are a bird watcher, this is a great place to see birds. And iguanas!

The Reserve is open from 7 days/week from 9a-5p, but the concessions are only open Wednesday - Sunday 9 - 4pm. (and usually Mondays that are holidays)

I can totally understand! Natalie's been here for 9 years now, and I've live here my whole life, and I'm still to discover new and incredible places to visit, and get in touch with nature. Its just paradise!
The question I have is I've read a few places where the mosquitoes will chew you up like crazy on these trails do we need to bring some sort of mosquito spray or is there something else that we can use we can pick up while we were down there so we didn't have to bring it in from the States
Hi!! You can get bugspray here at Walgreens/CVS, which are on basically every street corner. Personally I prefer to wear long pants and walk fast haha. I didnt get bitten on this trail, but I think Gabi did 😆 -Nati
