  • David quickly takes you through each step of hat making at D bar J. He starts with measuring your head and getting the shape, so he can get the proper fit, and your hat will feel comfortable from the first day. He then picks a hat body, selects the correct hat block, and the process begins.
Blocking machine(1800's) pulls the brim, and the block is pushed into the body. Crown ironing (1920's) shrinks the fur felt to make it more dense. Brim pressing flattens and shrinks the fur felt. Sweatband printing allows us to put names and personalize the hats. Sewing the sweatband is done by hand. Binding is sewn on by a machine from 1919. All hats are hand creased using a Jiffy Steamer.

So nice to see old equipment still being used to make something and not sitting around rusting or in a junkyard.

As a former and Eric Javits 10 years hat blocker, I must say I love making hats... Each hats has its own personality, and has the potential to change individuals appearance giving a unique style. Even though, there is a more easy way to hat making; really enjoy the video! Thanks!

Okay I'm 10 seconds in, and I already really like this guy. He talks like a normal person and the best part is he's not like 90% of the Hat CZcams videos I've been looking at which is some guy who's trying hard to not look exactly like Johnny Depp but he's got the Johnny Depp look and scraggly hair maybe a bushy mustache or something and he's trying to make the hat so much cooler more then it really is and talks about connecting with the soul of the hat and every hat needs to be have slight imperfections to make it unique and it's like a mystical experience with his whole I'm a rebel I make hats for a living. Look at me I don't know how to button up my shirt or cuffs and then they'll wrap it up by putting some predictable ass band on and then they always, and I mean just about always go for a crazy unique bold move and take a couple matches and stick it in the band like they're just going to grab that match to light their cigar while they're on their way doing something profound. All white wearing their fancy new hat that is the headwear equivalent to acid washed jeans with a hat that won't last 1/5 of the time a good quality Stetson will . But every hat is completely and totally unique just like flames and skulls on a Harley-Davidson they're all just so... Yeah I like this guy. Make a quality product don't be full of yourself care about your customer and you may actually stay in business. I'm not a betting man but my guess would be 90% of those cool hip young executive hatmaker's won't be in business five years from now. That's too bad because it is a very old honorable craft. So relieved to know there are normal Hatter's out there.

I worked in the wool felt industry in the mid 80s.. Big push for the Indiana jones hats and later the Dick Tracey wool hats..Also remember the push for stetson hats after urban cowboy.. The factory still stands in Pennsylvania..

I enjoyed this video. When I was a deputy I could never find a hat to fit me because I have an oval head. My grandfathers never left the house without their Fedora on. They both had identical ones that were gray with a black band. I believe they were Stetson's. I love a good hat, but I just wear low profile baseball type caps since I can never find a good hat that fits. Wish I were closer to you for a measurement and a quality hat. Probably couldn't afford it anyway. :-)

Their hat bodies are sourced from the same company that pretty much every other hatter uses. There aren't any hat body makers who make a good felt.

Greetings, I just found your comment on CZcams. How much do you know about hat making? Winchester is the best a hat maker can obtain in the past 50 years. Most and I mean most supposed hatters do not know how to process the hat bodies correctly. I can make the worst hat you have ever had out of a pure beaver body, or process correctly, the best hat you will ever own. Stratton,(Winchester) and Hat C0. controllable the world fur markets, and make about 80 to 90 percent of hat bodies in the world, sold under several different labels. most of the time the problem is the lack of knowledge of the Hat Maker and not the hat body.

I'm sure you make as good of hat possible with those bodies and I always enjoy your videos. I just dont care for Winchester felt. Have you tried the nutria felt from Sunrise hat co? I'm currently getting ready to try some out. They seem decent. I'm tempted to send a body to you. I bet you guys could make a really good hat from one.

@@gobigrey9352 Hello, I'm interested in making my own fur felt hat and am looking for a place to source the fur and other materials (hat blocks, tools, etc.). Would you be able to give some recommendations of where I can purchase materials? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Take care!

Joyce Fortin beaver/ Rabbit mostly, the more beaver the higher the quality. best body's are 100% beaver. or even more strait beaver belly fir.
