I re-creased my black Stetson Rancher into a Gus. It looks better now. That tall cattleman crease had to go. It made me look like John Travolta in Urban Cowboy. :(

There also was a Montana Peak, or a sugarloaf which evolved to a campaign

Didn't clear that up at all. Are you saying that all Gus hats have montana crease but Montana hats are taller?

On page 7 of The Official Collectors Edition John Wayne Volume 37 the author mentions John Wayne donning a Ten gallon hat.... Can you explain the difference between a Ten gallon hat and a typical cowboy hat? When I think of a ten gallon hat I think of Hoss Cartwright. Thanks!

That is an obscure reference to a BIG HAT, everyone also miss quotes the phrase, It is Galleon, not Gallon. A Galleon coin is about the size of a silver dollar, If your head was big enough to have a hatband made with 10 Galleon coins around it you have a big head. Small head sizes can not fit 10 coins around around the hat. The movies help keep this phrase alive because it sounds good. So, today, it more references ANY big brim/tall crown hat. People will argue this, BUT this is the facts of the term, even people/books that use the term, do not truly know the origins, It sounds cool. DJ.

When ordering a hat off the website, would it be possible to change the crease?

Unfortunately, no. We still do custom orders though, (now at 25% off) to make them however you'd like!

Are you saying you can have a Gus with a Montana crease? I don't get it.

They are more or less the same thing.. The crease was originally called a Montana but due to the success of the mini-series, Lonesome Dove (1989) in which a character named Augustus McCrae wore a version of the Montana crease, that particular style is now commonly referred to as a 'Gus'.
