Hey Dino, just purchased the Acerbis tanks for me and the wife’s DR’s.
Thank you for an another excellent video, you are very clear and we appreciate the effort it takes to put these online!
Safe travels!
Thank you for the comment, I'm glad you enjoy the content.
Dino
I really like the way you explain everything so thoroughly, even I can understand what you are doing!
Happy to hear that! I know the format is a bit long winded for some but I try to be thorough.
Dino
I really do thank you for the time you take to make your videos. They have helped give me the confidence to make some of the same modifications to my dr650. Your presentations are also very well done and entertaining even on things I have no plans on doing.
Thank you for the comment and I'm glad you find the content usefully and entertaining.
Dino
That video was amazing quality and production!
Wow, thank you so much
Dino
A very thorough explanation. It's good you made this video. Some channels don't explain everything like this so it's great you went to this effort.
Thank you for the feedback, I'm trying my best to make clear concise content, I'm not an expert by any means but I'll share what I know.
Thank you again
Dino
A buddy showed this video to me. It helped him with his install. Very informative video. I couldn't have explained it any better.
Glad it helped, and thank you for taking the time to comment,
Dino
Really enjoying these DR650 videos! I've wanted a bike since I was a kid and a friend of mine recently had me out on a little Yamaha 230 putting about in his father in law's fields; to make sure I'd actually enjoy riding before taking the plunge and getting a license. It was an absolute blast even if I didn't get past third gear. Depending on what insurance looks like in my neck of the woods you may have sold me on the DR!
The fact that you value your viewers and create nicely done videos will make you successful.
Thanks and keep up the great work.
Thank you very much for the feedback and I am glad you are enjoying the content. T
Dino
I have the same tank on my DR and regret not getting the 'clear' version like I have used on some other bikes. The clear models make monitoring fuel levels so much easier. Good job on your videos. Most informative.
I think when Karl ordered his the clear was not available, so he went for the matching black, glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the comment.
Dino
Your instructional video is excellent! Thank you. Without it I would have been in a heap of trouble doing my own tank installation, which I will attempt as soon as the tank gets here tomorrow.
You explain the process clearly, with a calm voice that inspires confidence. A little bit of humor also helps.
Living in an apartment complex I will probably get fined for doing this in the parking lot; it would still be worth it!
Thank you and will be looking forward to your other videos.
👍🏻
Glad it helped and all the luck with the tank install, you'll do great!
Dino
What a great video! Thank u, Dino and merry X-Mas.
Thank you again and merry Christmas to you as well.
Dino
Watched this video before I installed my tank. Glad I did because you mentioned checking the inside of the tank for debris first. Sure enough the tank had a bunch of small pieces of foam that I’m sure would have caused complication. Honesty probably Wouldn’t have checked inside first if I hadn’t watched your video. Thank you!
Glad I was able to help out.
Thank you for the comment
Dino
A couple things to add. I installed the same tank on my 2019 a couple weeks ago. It's a great opportunity to check valve adjustment when you have the tank off the bike. It'll maybe add 30 minutes to the job but save a full disassembly later. Also, dry fit that little seat tab before installing on the tank. I have a Seat Concepts seat and the slot that slides onto the tab is too narrow. I had to grind a small amount off each side of the tab to make it fit. Last thing, I added preload adjustment caps to the front forks to compensate for the extra weight of the fuel. Makes a big difference when braking hard. A great improvement in range, I now get 350 km before hitting reserve up from 200 km. Let us know how that tour up north goes. Oh ya, make sure Karl remembers to turn the fuel on before driving off. It's embarrassing to stall out at a stop light......
Thanks for the great feed back and suggestions. I may let Karl know about the petcock........or maybe not lol
Best video out there, very thorough. Thanks
Wow, thank you so much for the feedback, I know the audio is a bit off though. Thanks again, Dino
Hi Dino
I must say that you have the best videos ever, thank you sir and keep them coming my friend

Good to see Carl got off the couch in the end 👍
Lol so true. He's liking the tank also.
Thanks for the comment

Fantastic Video
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Great video 👍
Great video as always.
Glad you enjoyed it
I've never been much of a bike guy, but I kinda want to get a Dr 650....
like the videos.
Thanks for the comment Dave. The DR is just a fun bike, it does everything you need and is as reliable as a stick. Leave it stock or build it into an adventure monster, either way it's happy.
Thanks for the comment.
Dino
Real good video
Love those little intros haha
I am a little lacking with my Acerbis 5.3 tank, thats why i came to the master of all things DR!
Thank you for the kind words but I assure you there are many others more skilled with the DR than I. I'm a generalist for the most part but I hope the video was helpfully and thank you for commenting.
Dino
I´m going to get this exact 20 litre Acerbis for my DR. Would like to keep the original petcock though.. Might require some heavier modifying I think. I´m also a bit hesitant on the fuel cap compared to my proper lockable original with no tubes sticking out =) but yea things are always a compromise I guess =) Thanks for your videos on the DR´s!
Acerbis is does have a lockable cap option I believe. You are right though every mod has its downsides for sure.
Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Dino
How’d ya go mate? Did the OG peticock fit?
Cheers
@@ozziejim8472 hey friend! I haven't gotten round to it yet 🤣. But I've got a few friends who can machine an adapter which will bolt to the Acerbis and have a fitting for the original petcock. We'll see how that goes. Happy rides!
Great video. 10/10
Thank you
Dino
Thanks so much for your service to everyone with your videos, have a miracle filled evening 😊
Thank you very much.
Dino
Should try fitting the same to a CCM644... tank, Suzuki seat(early '90's model) subframe and the rest...joys
Friggin Karl, so needy 😂
great video! Don't change a thing.
Thanks for the comment.
Dino
Thanks Dino, great video. Just wondering with the shape of the tank and only one petcock is the fuel from the other side able to flow over when the level is low? It looks like a litre or two may be unusable?
Karl has never run the tank that low but I would think you would need to lay the bike down to get the last bits of fuel over to he left side of the tank. I do think the turning and leaning while you ride sloshes the fuel over to that side. Hope this helps.
Dino
I always wonder why people use an air hose to try and clean out the tank, which just blows the dirt around instead of using a shop vacuum and get it out clean.
You did not mention the 'evaporator cartridge'. Those pipes running along the frame that are supposed to go when changing the tank. Emmission thing. I have seen removed on other vids but not clear as to why. Great vid off course.
I did not mention the evaporator, I too have heard of people removing this unit, I'm sure there is a reason but I chose to leave it.
Thank you for the question and comment
Dino
What is the inner and outer diameter of the fuel hose you have used?
I can get 290 km out of the OEM tank left on Res until it sputters and dies. Thats was riding various speeds including periods over 100km/h and also into head wind. Handy to know exactly how far it can get. I also have the Acerbis 25lt (6.6 gallon) but have not fitted it yet but will be running dual Acrebis petcock's.
Very good to know, and a good practice, I will need to do this test with my Safari. Thank you for the information.
Dino
I found that the plastic black guard under the tank did not get in the way when I installed the same acerbic tank. In fact I left it on to help with wind. Not sure if it made a difference though. I guess I would have to take it off to figure that out :)
Thank you for the information, it seemed to iterfere when I dry fit Karl's, perhaps I could have applied a little more pressure to fit it on but I chose to remove it. Thank you again for the information.
Dino
Greetings Dino,
Do you know the difference of weight between the acerbis tank and the OEM tank when empty?
Thank you for assisting me.
Keep producing more videos.
Hi I do not know off the top of my head but I will see if I can weigh the stock tank today.
Dino
the stock tank is around 9lb or 4kg. the 20 liter tank that Karl bought was 4kg shipping weight which included all the cardboard and packing materials, which I am guessing is around 500 to 1000g so the tank is bigger and lighter.
Hope this helps😉
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed yes, did help.
Keep producing more detailed videos🇺🇸🎉🍾🇺🇸
Have you ever installed one on a dr650 with a PAIR system? Currently in the process of doing so and wondering what to do with the hose that goes to the PAIR system.
When you say PAIR are you referring to a pair of petcock or is is something else?
Dino
i was wonder would this fit a XF650 , the freewind they are the same chassis more or less ?
I can't say for sure but I think they are the same platform. Different seat though
Dino,
Can you do a follow up video on how Karl’s tank is doing? I’ve read that the Acerbis tank can stretch and start to hit the oil cooler over time. This issue causes the tank to sag and it breaks the outer most spark plug cap. I was wondering if he’s experienced any of these issues since the installation and mods.
The Safari tank seems more robust with the brace on the front. I can’t decide which one to go with. I would like to hear your thoughts now that you guys have some miles on this tank.
Cheers!
I will talk to him about it. He has the smaller Acerbis tank and I do not believe he has had any issues. I wonder if the sagging issue is with their 25 liter tank?
I went back and watched the install video you did for his bike. I forgot that he had the the smaller tank. I believe that sagging issue is only with the 25 litter tank. I think we're going to go with the Safari tank. I just like the idea of that extra brace. Thanks for the great information you've done on the DR650. You channel is awesome! @@DinosTinkerShed
The 6.6 tank just looks ridiculous, I don't care how much range it adds....lol. The 5.5 is a good balance. Unless your in remote parts of the world, I just don't see the need for 5+ gallon tanks. But, as always, great video.
The 6.6 is big for sure. I know my 30l safari gets in the way at times but it came with the bike so I make due, the look grows on you after a while.
Thanks for the comment.
Dino
Hi! Where did you buy the tank? Or, any recommendations on where to buy online? Cheers.
I will check for sure but I believe Karl bought his online from Fortnine here in Canada.
Dino
Hey Dino, is the carby vacuum hose the smaller hose coming out of the top of the carby? If so it looks like mine was never sealed up. Bike running fine though, what's the consequence of not having it sealed? ATB Jason 👍
Hi Jason, nice to hear from you. I thought that hose ran over to your vacuum petcock (if I am thinking of the right hose). not capping it off would create a vacuum leak that could impact throttle response and may allow dirt to enter the carby on top of the diaphragm. I would think you would want to cap that off. It may be that the DR produced enough Vacuum that throttle response is not impacted and that is why you have not really noticed but I would cap it off just to be safe.
Thank you for reaching out Jason, please keep me posted as to performance changes if you do cap it off, I would be curious to know.
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed thanks for getting back to me so soon Dino. I'll cap it off. When the tank is running low I'll remove it, take the top off the carby and inspect the top of the diaphragm for dirt as the last trip I was on was rather dusty. I'll keep you posted! ATB Jason 👍
Thank you Jason. Dont forget to film and post the video 😉I now myself and others will want to see it.
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed yep will do as I will take the opportunity to replace the rubber cushions fixed to the sides of the frame that push the sides of the tank out slightly making the tank sit more rigid and clear of the oil cooler. 👍
@@DinosTinkerShed Well, after sealing off that vacuum hose with a long tight fitting screw I've not noticed any significant difference in how the bike responds. Maybe the vacuum is simply used to draw fuel into the system and doesn't play any other part. Blocking it off is just to prevent contaminants getting into the carby. Thats my conclusion 😁
Great video as always! For me the audio is abit low compared to other videos on youtube. Other then that great video!
Thanks John, the audio is the one part I struggle with. I'll boost it up a bit in the future.
Thanks
Dino
Sorry Johan, looks like auto correct changed your name to john in my last reply. My bad.
Thanks again for you feedback.
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed No worries! Thanks for taking the feedback even though you haven't asked for it.
I really really recommend a good quality external mic, the sound is low and volume is inconsistent. The video quality is great though.
Thank you for the comment. I have upgraded quite a bit since the fuel tank video. I believe the sound is better on more recent Videos so please let me know. Still a bit of a noob on the video and audio scene.
Thank you for the feed back.
Dino
I have a 07 DR
Installed a larger tank with on/off petcock, starts right up, but if stalled or leave petcock opens for just a few seconds bike will not start, leave in sit overnight fires right up.
Got frustrated and put back on old tank and petcock , petcock is new, now vacuum doesn’t work same issues as with the on off petcock.
Have any ideas to my problem?
Thank you for the question, I always start by saying I'm not a mechanic but am willing to offer my thoughts. Id you blow all the possible dirt and plastic shavings out of the new tack before you installed it? It almost sounds like the float or float needle is stuck, if a small bit of dirt made it into the carb it can cause issues like this.do you still have the small fuel filter in place on the carb inlet pipe or an inline filter?
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed
Put an inline filter after the fact. I’m like you I think the float is not working properly , going to try a new float and needle
Hello. I have a question about the vacuum hose. What to do with it? I have an Acerbis tank with a tap without a vacuum hose. I have a vacuum-controlled carburetor. How to make everything work well?
The easiest fix is to simply bent the hose in half and zip tie it, this is similar to how you can bend over a garden hose to stop the water. When I updated the carb with a pro cycle jet kit in a later video I replaced the vacuum hose all together and used a vacuum cap to close off the port. These are available at most automotive stores or online on Amazon. Hope this helps and thank you for the great question.
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed Hello. Thank you for your answer. One more thing puzzles me. If I plug the vacuum hose, will everything work fine? After all, the carburetor does not have this vacuum. how it's working?
@@damiansuchecki2523 another great question. The port on the carb that you are plugging is only there to provide vacuum to the factory petcock. Plugging this port does nothing to impact the carbs other systems. If you think about it, during normal operations the line would pull a vacuum on the petcock diaphram to open the fuel , if the diaphragm is not damaged, no air passes by it and essentially the vacuum line is pulling on a capped end.
Does this make sense?
Dino
Was there any issues fitting the seat under the tank? I just put on this tank with a procycle seat and well, it doesn't seem to fit. I know that's not the seat in the video but just curious if this had to be trimmed at all. Thanks
Thanks for the question. No Karl's seat for right on with no issue at all. Does the Procyclenseat use a standard seat pan ?
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed Thanks for the reply, it is supposed to be or a copy of the stock pan. I'm going to get some rubber washers tomorrow to lift the back up a bit more and see if that helps. Thank you!
I had some issues with my stock seat and realized the "secondary air filter" was getting in the way, I have a aftermarket one that is a little larger than stock. Could be giving you issues?
So in playing with it tonight, I think I just wasn't pushing in hard enough. It was a pain to slot in but I got it in, no trimming or washers.
@@benshew thanks for the update. Maybe it will get easier as it settles in.
Dino
Hi Dino,
I just installed the 25L acerbis tank on my 2020 DR.
I have the same setup only i'm running 2 pepcocks.
After getting it all together and firing it up, it starts with the choke on , but if I let off the choke all the way, it quits on me.
bit of a lag when I roll on the throttle too. Any ideas what could be causing this?
Did I not ziptie the carb hose enough or something?
Any ideas would be great.
Cheers!
I would start with the vacuum hose. if any vacuum gets pulled into it it can mess with the carb. I eventually bought some vacuum caps for mine to eliminate any potential problems.
I would next check that you have enough fuel in the tank for the "on" position to pick up, if your not sure switch to the "RES" on both petcocks and see if that helps, it may be having fuel scavenging issues if there is not enough fuel.
One thing I noticed with my Safari tank, that has two petcocks as well, is that it seems to run better with both petcocks open rather than just one side at a time. Not sure why but it does, do you have both open at the same time?
If you put in-line fuel filters, they have a flow direction so double check that they are not in backward.
Lastly I removed the small filter that is in the fuel pipe on the carb itself, did you remove this or leave it in. it may have pulled in some crud when swapping the tanks so check to see if it is clean.
Hope this helps to solve the issue, please let me know if it does.
Dino
One other thing I'm just thinking about. My Safari really required the metal fuel pipe on the carb to be heated up and rotated so the fuel lines were coming in lower than the bottom of the tank. On Karl's 20l he did not need to do this but I am not sure if the 25l Acerbis needs this mod to allow the tank to fully flow or not. it's not a hard mod from what I've seen but I have never done it myself as my carb was already modified when I bought the bike used.
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed Thanks Dino I was wondering about this myself.
The hose does go up slightly, perhaps this is starving the bike?
Let me know if you are ever riding up in Muskoka!
Too much air getting in...choke puts more fuel in the mix
Hey Dino hope all is well. While taking the tank off on a 2022 650 there is another hose on the right side what the heck is that?
There are a few other hoses on the newer bikes. I wonder if it is part of the charcoal canister that sits under the left side cover. I'm not super familiar with the system but I thought it tied into the tank.
Hope this helps.
Dino
@@DinosTinkerShed I don’t know but I took it off and no gas came out. All good. You’re my go to guy on CZcams when I have questions about my DR. 👍
Unlike the Safari, does the Acerbis allow space for crashbars?
Yes, I bought the Acerbis instead of the Safari for exactly that reason. It works fine with the T-Rex crashbars.
I put an Acerbis tank on my Tenere 700 and I am not liking the condensation/vapor buildup on the outside of the tank. It's making the garage smell like gas and and I can't find other people talking about this regarding the Acerbis tanks (or any plastic tanks for that matter).
Thanks for the comment, I can only speak for myself of course, and the tank I installed here is on my buddy's
Bike, but he has never mentioned any condensation or smell issues. I have never noticed any on my Safari tank either and it sits inside all the time. I'll have to pay a bit more attention and see if it shows any of these issues. Thanks again for the feedback.
Dino
Any chance you can still use the stock petcock with the Acerbis tank?
Hmmm, I'm not sure, that may be a question best posed to a forum like DRriders. I bet someone has asked this before.
Dino
Yes you can.
Hi mate. you can also removal cannisters box
I don't believe my 2009 has the canaster ☹️ sorry
@@DinosTinkerShed czcams.com/video/1B_9Ofn55Vc/video.html
thank you, ya mine did not come with this canister. I'm not sure if it was never there or just not installed in 2009. Thank you for the link.
Dino
Can you use original suzuki petcock?
Great question, thank you for asking. To be honest, I am not sure. I just use the supplied petcocks both my safari and my buddies acherbis.
The new tank is lighter than the original?
It is, but I am not sure by how much.
Thank you for the comment
Was able to just flip the turn signal brackets 180 degrees on my 2018. Really angry theAscerbis tank shape doesn't allow my huge parabellum windshield to fit any more. I love that huge windscreen and it cost me $250.
That sucks, what model is the Parabellum? Karl has one on his but maybe it is a different size?
Dino
For a top-dollar item, plasticware is good, but spoilt by cheap and nasty fittings supplied. No vacuum cap supplied, washers way too small, and seat-clip requires modifications. Next time I'll be looking for a different brand. Also no need to butcher up blinker brackets - they can be simply juggled around to fit OK, even with the added complication of Barkbusters. Also for seat-clip bolts, recommend applying anti-seize or grease, not loctite.
Thank you for your observations, I agree that there could have been a few additional items included for sure. I did not see a way to adjust the turn signals without modifying them, the locator tabs seemed to be a bit of a challenge. I did not have the issue with the seat tab you talk about, I wonder if they changed the design at some point.
Thank you again for your insight.
Dino
Could it be that the year of the bike has anything to do with the signal lights bracket conundrum? What year DR is yours, backwodsman? I'm on the fence about this modification mostly because I lack the luxury of a garage with a nice workbench and vise. Mine is a 2020.
@@elego49 I think no change with the years. Mine is 2019 model. No special tools required to re-fit unmodified blinker brackets, just some thoughtful manipulation.
Don't know why, but I don't like that name "bush pig". She's far from perfect, but perfectly good in so many ways! So show some kindness guys!
I think its called "bush pig" because it is often used "in the bush" so to speak, and when revving it sort of sounds like a wild hog rooting around in the underbrush.
If you look at some of the aussie youtubers who really push the bike you can see how it would get that nickname.
Hope Carl gets rid of his anchor ⚓️
