Ultimate DIY DR650 Carb mods & acerbis fuel tank install

  • Why buy a kit when there's a good chance you can make some big changes yourself. In this video, I do a fairly decent tune to the stock DR650 carb all while spending zero dollars on it. That's right, drilling out the main jet, grinding the needle, and making my own needle shims. This bike has never run so well or made this much power.

    Thanks for the vid. One thing about drilling the jet. I read about it when I was a youth, in car mags. The jet hole is actually tapered, as the fuel flow is calculated for that size. When you drill it you square the hole, which really increases the flow rate, more than just a purchased jets size up. It also can cause lack of consistency in the fuel flow. Food for thought.

    Did you take the exhaust off and grind down the weld inside the front pipe (at the manifold)? It's supposed to make a huge difference. The other guys couldn't keep the front wheel down. One guy was BikerBits I can't remember the others there was an Australian and a Canadian you can probably grind your jet/needle more. I think they changed to a 55 on the lower jet. Good luck nice job on the video. I'm not sure we can get away with re-jetting a bike in Ohio because of emissions.

    I don't understand how tapering the needle at the tip improves low end response? Think about it. I drilled my original main jet, and ground my needle and it was never right, yes it ran alright but it wasn't 'right' , but after tinkering abit more with it, I'm like you, I've got my bike tuned to the point where I don't think it could get any better. Cut Airbox and exhaust header weld ground down, drilled slide, cut spring, 155 mikuni main jet, 45 pilot jet, stock needle shimmed up a smidge. I don't have pipe on mine cut but I'll order a couple more sizes up of main jet when that comes, itll probably end up at around 160 or 165 mainjet. I bought an extended fuel screw and that has been an excellent addition too, When the pipe comes I also want to do abit of porting and polishing on the exhaust side of the head. When you get them 'right' they run amazing, sitting still at idle the bike idles butter smooth, and you can't smell anything, at cruise the motor is buttery smooth, but then you give it some wrist and it makes you feel all giddy, I can wrist it around tree's in figure 8's , then scoot up to 70mph with ease and sit there all day. Cheers,

Raising the needle with shim{s} should keep it out of the backfire zone and help with idle to 1/4 throttle perf.

    • @jeremygoertz
      @jeremygoertz  Před 2 lety +1

      I don’t think there would be any benefit if you’re using the stick exhaust. It’s very restrictive and opening up the carb will just make the system imbalanced with the restrictive stock exhaust.

    • @RKmndo
      @RKmndo Před 2 lety

      I use stock exhausts on my DR650s. I keep the mods simple though...extended idle-mix screw, snorkelectomy, adjustable OEM overseas needle. I'm near sea level. I DON'T cut my airbox. I relocate the crankcase vent away from the airbox opening, to eliminate surging. At altitude, I can adjust the idle-mix screw and/or remove the airbox door.

      I don’t believe that. Especially 100X. It’s a low compression engine with a simple and good design. Improved natural aspiration doesn’t tax an engine. Riding the crap out of it because it goes better, now that would affect it’s longevity. But that would also decrease the life of a stock DR.
