Love how you included that little hiccup while pairing your phone. That's the kinda stuff that's always cut out, but matters because it's an everyday thing.
Thank you. I shoot a lot of these on the fly, and want others to see reality. Frustrations exist for all of us.

Thank you! This was extremely helpful!
You're welcome.
The video was very clear. I had no problem seeing the screen
Thank you that was very helpful .
You’re welcome!
Thanks for the info. Just purchased a CX-9 2021 and this helps understanding systems. BTW, used to live in Enterprise while stationed at Rucker.
Your welcome! Enterprise and Fort Rucker connect a lot of us. Thank you for your service! Enjoy your wonderful Mazda!
The new infotainment looks really good.
I was wondering if I can update my 2018 Mazda Cx5 infotainment system. Thanks for your great video
Nice, thanks Jonathan! Lucky you, we're still waiting for it to arrive in Asia. They moved Cyl.Deact in infotainment... so still there.
I hate that for you. Maybe it will come soon.
Thanks for the overview of this infotainment system. If you were to do another video or update this one, it would be really helpful if you described how you were moving the controls to navigate through the screens in addition to showing the various screens. I have a 2021 CX 5 GTR and and am having to fumble through the controls to find my way around. It's not as intuitive as I'd hoped. Otherwise, I'm enjoying all of the fine features this car provides!
How are you enjoying that Turbo? :)
I am about to get a GT, but the GTR sure was enticing.
I will try to record an update next week. Sorry for the delay in seeing this.
I was so afraid when you were on maps you were going to click on your home and show the world where you live lol Great video. Thanks for all the helpful info. I'll be able to jump in with more confidence now.
Here's one I can't figure out you may be able to help with. How do you change between HD Radio Multicast channels? It's baffled me since getting my 2021 Mazda 3
if a touchscreen is added to later models would older models be able to upgrade to an infotainment with a touchscreen?
How can I change the navigation to night mode on mazda3 astina 2021 it’s very bright all the time
Hi John you seem to know alot. Do you have any clue how to adjust the audio settings manually for a cx 5 2021 non bose system? I cant find the bass, treble, fade etc. Its driving me nuts and sounds so bad as is
Does anyone know why the Vehicles Settings are greyed out and not available? 🤔 My car was parked and the break was on...
Hi Jonathan, excellent review.. just curious what is the third icon on the bottom right next to the phone battery and network icons?
That lets you see the split app view to have your navigation to the left & your music to the right
How are you moving around the infotainment system? It's not clear or intuitive when you aren't using a touchscreen.
@jonathan > excellent guidance from all your videos , features on cx9 carbon is higher than cx5 carbon .any thoughts? Also is there a way to have heated & automatic foldable side mirrors for cx5 carbon edition. Or any special video on carbon will be helpful
The Carbon CX9 does have more features than the CX-5. I’m not sure if the mirrors would run off the same power as nonfolding.
Did Mazda change the steering wheel buttons for up/down for presets? For XM or Favorites it doesn't advance or go back, I have to use the scroll wheel, which is very cumbersome.
Yes they did with the new system.
Thanks jonathan It's very helpful. Can 2020 cx5 use the 7gen infotainment by upgrading the software?
Unfortunately not.
How do you use the steering wheel buttons to advance stations / favorites? It used to be so easy to just hit the up/down button to go from one favorite (AM/FM/XM) to another. I can't figure out how to change stations when I am using navigation through Apple Carplay....
use the round button for everything. don't use those little buttons.
I upgraded my 2017 Cx5 infotainment to get the Apple car play and Android auto. I am wondering will there be a update available to could improve the quality and camera modes of the backup camera?
If you mean a software update to improve that, no. It’s the camera itself that would need to be upgraded, which is a hardware upgrade.
@Jonathan Sewell We LOVE your vids! My pregnant wife and I (our first child due in 4 weeks) have been watching to a lot as it's easier for her than going to the dealership. We love the CX-5 Carbon Turbo. Do you know if signature lighting can be installed, including fog lights? Better lighting is a key safety feature for us. Thanks for all that you do!
Congratulations! That’s so cool! I have 4 kids and know you are excited! I get asked a lot about the signature lighting, and I don’t have a definitive answer. I know the assembly will fit, but not sure if the wiring is there. I’ll try to work on this for you. Congratulations again, take care of Momma and baby, and thanks for watching.
@@JSS Thanks much, really appreciate it!
Question: what information does the HUD display? When you are in Android auto or car play, does the HUD display the navigation directions from Apple map and Google map? Thanks.
Did you figure this out? Have been looking for this info for a little bit now.
@@anandksrao No luck, and my gut feeling is "no" for the answer. Would like to see if the new CX 5 or CX 50 would do it.
The HUD doesn’t show any smartphone info. Would show directions from Mazda Navigation only. Also will not have Traffic sign recognition without the Mazda Navigation
@@JSS on my CX 50 S premium plus, when I use the Apple Maps from my CarPlay it shows the directions on my HUD also
What model years get touch screens?
We test drove a 2018 sport or something that had a touchscreen, but purchased a 2021 GT awd, and it doesn't seem to have touch capability. Are we just dumb lol
Hi. how do you delete favorite radio stations?
Hello, I just got a brand new 2021 Mazda CX-5 and couldn’t find the active display, I was wondering if it’s possibly to not have it?
It first appears with the Grand Touring Premium package, then it is standard on the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature.
Does the audio setting have equalizer settings, aside from the bass & treble setting?
It doesn’t.
Good video, I notice you had to plug into the usb to use CarPlay. Can a wireless connection be used instead like the Mercedes vehicle?
On few vehicles Mazda has wireless CarPlay connection. The 10.25” screens on CX-5 and CX-9 require tethering.
@@JSS thanks for the feed back, I hope the 2022 will go wireless for the cx-5
@@JSS the Carbon edition is wireless pairing
My display has gone black. Is there a way for me to address it myself?
Can you drag the map sideways or up and down on Mazda's non-touchscreen while using Android Auto? Also, how do you zoom in on the map? I don't think this display has the exact functionality like a touchscreen display has. Am I wrong about that?
To zoom in and out I believe on all map application you can just turn the knob. You also have + & - buttons you can highlight and click.
Jonathan, I’ve recently bought this vehicle CX 50 turbo premium plus … one of the issues that I have is a remote start with the app it’s says successful when you press to turn it on … but I’ve noticed once you arrive to the vehicle the engine turns off it’s kind of annoying and then you get a message saying that engine fail … then you just have to turn on the vehicle again🤦🏻♂️ also one of the light up door trims that say CX 50 came off the door panel on the second day of having it Take it to the dealership to this point I’m still waiting for that piece to be put back
I know that the remote start is Toyota tech, and their remote start always cuts off when you unlock or open the door. Are they waiting for a new part to replace the door sill?
On the speedometer (not the hovering HUD), can we switch it to digital numbers instead of an analog needle?
Unfortunately not. The CX-5 is strictly analog.
I thought it depends on the model spec? I was under the impression in the UK on the GT sport spec you can set it as numbers only.
@@apj3863 I think you can, you can have a digital one in the centre of the dials.
I know android auto allows split screen (IE Google Maps & Spotify) does it do the same with CarPlay? I really liked the toggle feature with the rotary dial and buttons by the console more than the touchscreens. I spend less time staring at a screen trying to adjust something and wish more car manufactures would implement this feature.
CarPlay has a dashboard that shows map and audio. Not really split screen, but close.
@12:47
Can you play an iPod Classic by plugging it into the USB port or would you have to go through android auto with your phone?
It should read through the USB as an MP3 player. It wouldn’t pull up Apple CarPlay though.
Do you know if all CX-5 models have the active driving display? Thanks!
Standard on the GT trim model only
Only standard in grand touring reserve and up but can be added to grand touring
Se puede montar en un Mazda Cx5 2018?
I have a question for you, Jonathan. Do I have to keep my iPhone connected through the cable to the USB port? I thought now all 2021 it's wireless connectivity.
You have to keep the cable connected for the carplay to work
@@victorcardoso5308 not on the Carbon edition.. it’s wireless pairing for car play
How many USB ports does this have?? Thanks for the great review
2 upfront and 2 in the rear.
i have a 2020 cx 5 but the navi is 8.5inch.. is it possible to change same as 2021?
Jonathan, Thank you for creating this (and all of your great videos). How does the wi-fi hot spot work? I would hate to have the kids use it for a trip and find out that they used the connectivity allotment for the 3 year activation period and I am no longer able to use the remote services. How do you know the limits included without buying an extra service?
The Wifi hotspot has nothing to do with mazda connected services. Connected runs off of 2G/3G network (I'm not 100% sure which) so you'll have access to it for the full 3 years regardless of burning through the wifi hotspot data/time limit.
Can I buy the infotainment by itself ?? It looks nice
Could you tell me if the CX5 GT and the CX5 Turbo have a stop start feature, and if they do can you turn the annoying feature off
There is no stop/start feature on any Mazda in the North America market that I know of....
@@buchajo At least, my 2021 CX-5, bought in the U.S., doesn't have iStop, or the Engine Stop/Start technology.
I know of a way to permanently disable iStop. When you open the hood, there's a plastic cover by the latch, with 4 plastic fasteners, that can come off, then there's an iStop sensor under that, right under the latch, that's connected by a screw/bolt. Just take off the screw, and move the sensor out of the way.
@@SokemRokemRobot yea I'm the US too - I hear ya.
Do you know if the 2019 CK 5 can be updated to this new infotainment software?
I’m sorry it cannot.
@@JSS thanks!
android option does not show up in my mazda cx 5 signature since I had it in October, 2020. I was waiting to see if they would roll out the update over the air but no luck. Would you be able to suggest what I can do? I contacted my dealer about it and the technician just said he did not have an android device so he could not check it. And advised to just plug in my android device, I have been trying that for the good past couple of months and it just does not come up. please help.
I’m sorry to hear this. Do you have a CX5 or CX9? I am not as familiar with Android Auto, but have not seen any issues after installed. I know it does require it to be turned on in some models, where the CarPlay automatically comes on.
@@JSS I have a CX 5 2021 Signature.
How do you explain no TPMS alarm on a 2021 CX5 GS with snow tires and rims installed with no sensors.
I can’t explain it. I wonder if the all or none situation eliminates the monitoring. I’ll see what info technicians can offer.
@@JSS hi fo all gt models include active driving displays or is that an extra option? Thanks!
I've never actually had a vehicle equipped for Apple Car Play, so that was helpful! One quick question. Our cell plan doesn't have unlimited data, so we might be better off using built-in navigation instead of our phone. Can a Nav Card be added to a vehicle that doesn't come equipped with one? If we get a CX-5, it won't have one standard at the trim levels we're looking at.
Yes you can add Navigation to any model by purchasing a card.
I had the same question. Thanks, Jonathan!
@@JSS go to eBay.. they have navigation as cards for around 50
Is it easy to install the Mazda CX-5 navigation sd card?
Is there an aux port so I can use my old Ipod with all my music on it ???
USB is the only auxiliary option, or Bluetooth if iPod is equipped. You can also use a USB flash drive.
Highly informative video, thank you. I have one question, you pointed to the battery and signal of the phone being displayed, there is a third indicator next to them, it looks like stacked lines, would you be able to tell what do they mean, it's been bothering me since I got the car
That is the signal for the connected services which is also an LTE connection.
@@JSS Thanks a lot, it was driving me crazy. All the best to you
Am i able to play my MP3s or MP4s from a USB flash card on the 2021 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition? Please, don't tell me I need a cell phone to play my music.
You can play all your excellent Christian rock songs from your flash drive, plugged into the USB port.
Have both a 2021 Tiguan SE and 2021 CX5 Grand Touring. Can make a lot of comparisons but the 4 comparisons to bring up: 1) Tiguan infotainment Touch screen is 100% better than CX5 convoluted knob system, and in CX5 you have to use a cable to use Apple Play or Android Auto; Tiguan connects via WiFi. CX5 does have USB slot wherein you can use a thumb drive packed with music. 2) CX5 ride is way too stiff, you feel every little bump. The CX5 is my wife’s car and she is NOT a car person but she even said, “My Mazda has a more bumpy ride than your VW.” 3) Highway MPG: Tiguan = 36.6; CX5 = 32.2. Both highway MPG respectable. 4) On long drives, you can get “seat fatigue” in Mazda, not so in Tiguan. CX5 seats “look” more comfortable but looks are deceiving.
Aloha, what do I do to have the analog clock in display (only).
When you press the home button twice, the clock will show. In the settings you can choose the analog clock.
Do you have to use USB everytime for carplay?
Yes, on this 7th generation system you do as now. Some 6th gen models for Mazda6 and MX5 allow for wireless connections.
Do you think they will ever add wireless connectivity to car play?
You can buy an aftermarket wireless dongle. I just installed AAwireless in my new cx5 I bought last week. I use wireless android auto. When I get in my car, it loads up very quickly. I keep my phone in my pocket.
How to add SIRUX XM and SIRUX XM travel link to carbon edition?
@Gerald Leonard how do u do it?
You can download the SiriusXM app to your phone and then use Bluetooth to hear XM radio right ?
just bought a 2021 cx5 yesterday. I'd day navagation went black and have no radio now it ask u the safety question no screen when u crank it up it also shows on navagation screen the communication comes but that's all can u help I just bought this car last week
I haven’t experienced this. So went you turn off and turn back on it does not reboot? What is working and what is not working?
@@JSS I figured it out you have to hold down the navagation button back button and mute button I'd say for 20 sec. that's crazy tho
@@marylu57 What's really crazy... we're always having to learn something new.
Can you change your speedometer to digital?
Unfortunately not in the CX-5 nor CX-9
Does the Apple CarPlay come with the wireless?
Unfortunately, not on this system.
@@JSS thanks Jonathan. Appreciate your time making the video it’s really helpful.
Driving home , screen was working, suddenly went black. How do I turn it back on?
There is an update to help resolve that.
Is the new infotainment system no longer able to be used as a touch screen?
No, only knob
Are there any features this infotainment is missing as compared to the Mazda 3 and cx -30? I figure there might be something as this gen infotainment was adapted to the cx-5 for 2020/2021.
They’re very similar, as they’re both 7th gen software.
Does the car come with wireless apple car play?
This system does not, at the moment.
Why is the CX5 Carbon not have satellite n can u put satellite in it?
Unfortunately you can’t add it. I’m not sure why Mazda has excluded it from the Bose system this year.
If you have XM in another vehicle you should be able to download their app on your phone and use blue tooth to listen to it in your Carbon Edition.
@@ssnobrakesable I don’t! I jus listen thru bluetooth
@@maryeverling8238 ?......How do you do it ?
@@ssnobrakesable I just play my music off my iPhone
Just got a cx-5 2021 touring. The infotanment system looks good, but it sucks. The volume knob cannot be slide, which means you cannot switch to the next song other than pressing the button on the steering wheel. As you may know, it is not a touchscreen. I believe in the previous model and other mazda vehicles such as mazda 3 and cx-30 2021 you can slide the volume knob to switch song and radio station. This is really super annoying!
Are you talking about the commander knob (big knob) or the volume knob (smaller knob). I don’t know what you mean by sliding the volume knob.
@@JSS The smaller knob actually. I mean, in cx-30, you can slide the small knob to the left or right to switch songs. But in the current cx-5 model, the small knob is fixed, you can only control the volume with this knob. This design makes it extremely annoying to switch songs. Imagine the passenger wants to switch to the next song while the driver is navigating with carplay, the only thing the passenger could do is to either exit the navigation page and goes to the music app, or ask the driver to click the button on the steering wheel.....
BTW, the user manual clearly shows that you can slide the small knob to switch songs. This is absolutely a huge mistake.
I find it odd that the nice new infotainment system dropped wireless car play support.
This 7th Gen system never had wireless connectivity until the CX-50, CX-60, etc this year (2023 models). They added wireless to the 6th generation last year on some models.
Like the new infotainment screen. But no touch screen is a big pain in the ass. Pushing button click here and there just to get to an app.
swap the headunit/dash trim of the 2021 for 2017-2020 cmu retrofit/hacking with a serial connection gives full access to touchscreen mode, you also enable your HUD to show turn by turn navigation and street name from an unofficial AA.
How do you get a SD card with out paying $500
There are some options on eBay and Amazon. They usually run $50.
Why cant i use carplay by Bluetooth or through the front usb slot 😡😡
This system doesn’t offer wireless CarPlay. What model vehicle do you have? The 7th generation system should work with both USBs
@@JSS i have Mazda cx5 2021 model touring with sv package . I would love to have apple car play with Bluetooth option
its not you guys don't know the car. the biggest feature is the heads-up display. when you use the native nav system the turn by turn shows in the HUD. if you use a 3rd party like your phone then they don't. you don't address that. i just heard a video say ONLY THE SIG MODEL has the native nav available. i am picking up a new reserve to replace my 2019 reserve. if this is true i'm not happy. you don't address the relationship of the nav turn by turn (no one does cause none of you know how this works cause you don't own the car you just sell it). not one video shows the HUD and native vs. 3rd party nav display. having the turn by turn in HUD is paramount and you just skip it.... if you are going to sell a product, learn it...
I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the Mazda product. However, I just drove a 2020 Signature for 4 months and didn’t use the Mazda Navigation once. I prefer Apple CarPlay and Maps because it’s linked to my watch also. I will admit I was only in a situation where I needed Navigation 3 or 4 times. I think that may be why Mazda has removed the $450 Nav car from all models except the highest trims. So yes, your 2021 Reserve isn’t standard with a Nav card. I’m sorry your salesperson or your research didn’t share that with you. It could have it as port option, and can definitely be added from the dealership. Thank you for your continued Mazda support.
@@JSS you buy the nav card off ebay $60. she did we know all about it. the key is with the navi card the speed limit and road signs show up. this is the most important part of the car features and all you guys skip over it.
In Depth review but we cannot see how Android Auto looks on this wide screen...
Yeah I am waiting for that too.

No touchscreen?
The knob and dial is safer, and more comfortable anyway.
Carplay was really made for touchscreen. It's such a hassle without the touchscreen, navigating with the spin wheel
I had a touchscreen … barely EVER used it lol. I always just move everything on my phone anyway.
2021 and no touch screen option. Not for me.
Understandable
@@JSS Not understandable. Stop giving into these whiners. lol.
I just bought a 2021 cx5 and infotainment does not look like that at all. My mazda 3 did but cx5 is a boring red/black screen
Are you in Canada? I believe Canadian models were a little behind the US models in getting the 10.2 inch screen
Why don’t Mazda have touch screen 😫😫😫
It’s a safety decision to keep hands off
Touchscreens suck because it'll take your eyes off the road too long, and then you might crash into the back of my CX-5.
what a shame, it looks great, but no touchscreen = no purchase. Even my 2012 Toyota has a touchscreen
Using the knob and dial is an upgrade because it's safer, and more comfortable.
I wonder if he owns the rights to that music or not 🤔
😂😂
😂😂
Knob maybe good for the menu. But apple car play without touch screen is just stupid.
Touch screen should be much better and easier.
Yes, it would be
It doesn't take long to learn how to use the knob and dial for input. It's safer than a touchscreen.
No android auto.
They have Android auto, I haven’t had an android phone to demonstrate.
Mazda needs to get rid of the buttons and make the infotainment system 100% touchscreen (moving and stationary). Everybody complains about the infotainment not being 100% touchscreen. Mazda needs to fix this major flaw. This is one of the reasons why I will not be buying a Mazda until they fix this flaw.
I appreciate your opinion, however I don’t view it as a flaw. I believe they have just drawn a line in the sand on safety from distracted driving and wanting to follow some high line brands with the commander control. I don’t see them changing that. I hate that this one feature will keep you from all the other great things Mazda is offering.
@@JSS If you watch people reviewing Mazda vehicles on CZcams you will see that every single reviewer complains about the infotainment system not being 100% touchscreen.
Lexus has gone to touchscreen for 2022 models.
Getting rid of the touchscreen is not a flaw. It's a great safety feature. If you can type without looking at the keys, then you can learn how to operate the dial and knob when operating the Infotainment system. A touchscreen keeps the eyes off the road too long, and it only takes a couple of seconds to cause an accident.
No salesman ever show how to enter an address on the map without touch screen. That sucks!
Agreed. You pay $40000 so that you have to use a phone to get to an address!
@@pooh4519 I don't use a phone, and I can use the map just fine.

It is actually a ton better than the previous generation. Some of it doesn’t show as well through the video.
Infotainment center is a joke along with the extremely cheap feeling key fob both huge fails and would keep me away from ever purchasing another Mazda in the future.
I agree with the key fob. What specifically about the infotainment?
You're a whiner.
Too many systems through one port and way too clunky to not be a distraction for those even without ADD! HATE IT! Music should NEVER be bundled in with all the other Too Much Information. (Great Duran Duran song.) No CD? Zero info about how to store and organize music for a USB stick either! What a poor, over complicated, low information roll out!
I just made a video on how to install the Navigation SD card for 2021-2014 CX-5 for $25!
It also unlocks features in the HUD
