Fire type Pokemon are certainly powerful, but often quite rare and frail. Can they beat Pokemon Platinum's greatest challenge!?
We've done some hard Pokemon challenges in the past, but usually they were a solo Pokemon challenge run. What if we still did a really difficult challenge... but with a full team using hardcore nuzlocke rules, and with only one type? Today we find out: can I beat a Pokemon Platinum Hardcore Nuzlocke with only Fire types? No items and no overleveling!

Monotype Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
(1) If a Pokémon faints, it must be permanently boxed or released.
(2) Only the first type-specific Pokémon encountered in each Route/Area can be caught.
(3) No Legendaries/Mythicals, duplicates, or same-evolution-line Pokémon can be caught or used. If a duplicate is encountered, the next unique type-specific Pokémon encounter can be caught.
(4) Additional Pokémon may be caught for the purpose of HM use, but these may not be used in battle at any time during the run.
(5) No Items can be used in battle (Held Items are allowed).
(6) Party Pokémon levels are limited to the highest level Pokémon of the next Gym Leader or Elite 4 Member. So long as your Pokémon are at or below the level cap when the Gym Leader/Elite 4 Member battle starts, they can level up mid-battle.
(7) "Set" Battle Mode must be used at all times.
(8) No connecting with other games for the purposes of importing Pokémon, Items, etc.

Hey Silph Squad! Sorry for the sparse uploads as of late; MissSilph and I ended up buying a house and the moving process has been hectic! Should be another video up next week too though 😄
Don't forget to use code CODE for $5 off your first #Sakuraco box through my link: team.sakura.co/silph-SC2205 or your first #TokyoTreat box through my link: team.tokyotreat.com/silph-TT2205. Order by May 31st for this month's box!
congratulations!
Congratulations man! Glad to see you back!
Congrats on the house!
Glad to see that you’re back.
Congrats man!
"I was very adamant to train up Attack EVs on wild Shinx"...I see what you did there Silph 🤔
Either that's legends arceus reference or i dont get it
@@EEVEE_fan16 havent watched it yet, but assuming the shinx had an adamant nature..
Because adamant increases attack! :P
@@CosmoCurious Bingo! 😋
I'd say it was a brave move!
I'd love to see a "4x weakness only" run, Scizor 4x weak to fire, geodude 4x weak to water, Paris 4x to flying etc
Wouldn't be that interesting because you could just simply... switch into the pokemon that isn't weak to that type. NPCs in official pokemon games are generally not that smart to be carrying coverage moves
Meaning that the only starters that can be used are: Charmander (Kanto, Kalos), Mudkip (Hoenn), Turtwig (Sinnoh), Chespin (Kalos), Rowlet (Alola, Hisui - cannot evolve fully in the former).
Sounds boring
You are INSANE! But I think Silph could be able to pull this off though
@@Kento617 Anyone could pull this off.
Literally just searched up “Hardcore Nuzlocke” so I could watch it while I’m eating and then got the notification. Silph clutching up
He tackles the algoritm 😉
Haha so youre like me xd
I too, enjoy watching these while eating.
"Did you put your name into the Goblet of Fire, Harry?" he asked calmly.
DID YOU??????
Meanwhile in the movies: "DID YOU PUT YOUR FREAKING NAME INTO THE GODDAMN GOBLET OF FIRE, HARRY???" *proceeds to launch things away in a pure state of hate*
"Did you put your Hamster in the Toaster of Fire?" Silphs Wife asked calmly.
Underrated comment here. 🤣🤣
“Did you name your Pokémon after the Goblet of Fire, Shiloh?” the comment section asked calmly.
The fact that you thought Dawn said "I've lived for 60 long years." had me cracking up.
that must be the Dawn that didnt got sent back to her present time after her hisuian adventures.
I love how Flint and Silph have the exact same teams. Gotta love sinnoh fire types.
All two of them, in DP.
Me : Tries a nuzlocke
*Immediately fails*
Silph: does a load of nuzlockes and beats them
Don't let it get you down man, keep at it!
start with an easier game like fire red or emerald :) I just did a nuzlocke where i could only use mons chosen by my friends (i had 6 total)
One piece of advice would be not to go in blind. Even just do a practice run or two without nuzlocking to learn the movepools and strategy of opponents in key fights, while learning where you can skip optional battles. Then the run basically turns into a puzzle with only a little luck needed.
@@frkcybtw This is sound advice. Only thing I'd say is that Emerald is probably not a great starting game since while you can get some solid encounters, there's a lot of choke points that can absolutely ruin your life unless you prep hard for them (Wattson-Norman is almost guaranteed to lose you a mon or two, May 2 can be brutal without prep, Tate and Liza can absolutely ruin your day if you aren't used to double battles, and Juan can get out of hand fast)
Fire Red is definitely the best starting point though. Lots of good encounters, not a ton of surprise difficulty spikes/choke points, and it's open enough to where you can really plan in some interesting ways
@@LordLucario12 Unless they're specifically going for mono-type runs (which new nuzlockers should probably avoid), there are a ton of even early mons (shroomish into breloom and ralts into gardevoir in particular) that can nearly solo the entire game.
when he failed the first attempt i was wondering why he wasn’t using Ponyta lmao
I was like hell yea Harry Potter nicknames, but after you renamed mad-eye I realized it was all from Goblet of Fire. Well played sir
I have to see how you get pass Barry at Hearthome; that fight is HARD, especially deathless. This challenge is way harder than my Grass no-death nuzlocke; you don't even get access to a full fire team!
I was intent on doing this same thing so I went hunting for Rotom in the Old Chateau, as it was available in the main game in Platinum. I was confused when I couldn't find the Secret Key, and to my horror found it was only available via a WiFi giveaway event. Heat Rotom would have made short work of Cynthia, but I stand by this team nonetheless. Theres nothing a good Houndoom cannot do
@@Taijirai Heat Rotom is unviable in gen 4 since it's still Electric/Ghost. Don't see how it would destroy Cynthia, but it would be a great answer against Barry for sure.
Houndoom is one of my all time favorites. Seeing it pull through the run makes me happy. Keep up the grind and thanks for the amazing video, Silph!
If only one of my 2 favorites on his team could have made it too -.- (Barty and Ivor)
You have good taste 😊👍
I know diamond/pearl get a hard time for the gyms leaders and the elite 4 using Pokémon that aren’t their type. I have always thought of them being masters of a type, and not just a type of Pokémon. Like Flint being a fire type trainer, not just fire type Pokémon trainer. But the type as a whole, that’s why everyone on his team has a fire move. I feel like they are true masters of their chosen type, and it provides a new challenge, because you can’t just use a super-effective type to beat them, you have to variety to the strategy.
I agree and that's all well and good but that only really works if they're using mons not of their type for coverage and diversity, not because they literally had no choice as the region only has 2 or 3 mons of their specialist type
It's one of the those design decisions where, had it not been born out of necessity, it would have been pretty cool. Honestly, you'd think after 3 generations of Pokemon they wouldn't make a mistake like only having 2 fire types before the post game, but here we are.
Me before watching this video: I don’t think this is going to end well.
Me when he catches Houndour: Love the Harry Potter naming theme.
Me when he renamed Magmortar: Goblet of Fire. Ingenious!
Me after watching the video: Yep, I was right.
At the beginning when I saw the possible encounters, I had forgotten about a crucial thing about Old Chateaus trickster (which I remembered at the time of Fantinas gym); To anyone else wondering, Rotom did not get its typing changed until generation 5 when changed into any of the appliances, it remained its Electric/Ghost typing. Totally forgot it myself
I looked at the title and told myself: “Wow, Silph, you masochist.”
Would have been more masochistic in DP.
true masochism would be trying the literal "bang your head against the wall till it works" run of doing mono electric in platinum.
(first gym is excentially impossible with only a level cap shinx)
I was thinking "but what about Ponyta?" since before the first gym and all the way until you realized
Correction: Your ponyta’s nature is impish, which is +Defense and -SpecAtk, which is pretty Garbo for a ponyta
To be fair, Rapidash isn't a very good special attacker, so +Def could be helpful for a run like this.
@@shinigamimiroku3723 that’s definitely true, I just thought that because whenever I get a fire type with impish that isn’t a flareon it’s a specAtk based mon
@@evanstoica6930 Yeah, for some reason a shocking amount of Fire-types have a lot of Atk... Granted of course that there have been a lot of additions that *do* have a higher Sp. Atk, but even into Gen4 I believe it was split almost 50-50. One of the reasons why Fire-types were considered underpowered wasn't just because they're frail, but because many of them couldn't combine their high Atk stat with STAB.
@@shinigamimiroku3723 Yeah I wish there were more Fire-type Physical attacks so Flareon and other Fire-Type Physical attackers can use good STAB moves (like a Fire-type Quick Attack or Fire-type Headbutt)
@@donovanlocust1106 is there no priority fire type move?
also there are a considerable amount of physical fire moves in gen4, theres fire fang, fire punch, flare blitz, flame wheel...
It’s an honor to be nicknamed in your run sir 🐵🔥💪
Lol
16:08 this was an incredible strategy Silph!! Not many of how bad of a demon this Mismagius is
4:26 There are so many things I prefer in DP, it's kinda funny. They wanted to make Platinum the definitive game, but small changes such as strictly worse Gardenia gym make me want to play Diamond over Platinum despite the battle delay and surf speed lol
hide and seek is lame. chad flower clock
@@blissfulstatic2563 ew 🤢
I wish rotom heat was fire in this game since that would have been another encounter
Literally just had the thought this morning about when a new Silph vid would drop. Yessss
The jokes were excellent, and the gameplay was great as always. Keep up the good work, Silph!
This run made me ridiculously happy, especially the nicknames. You're amazing and your uploads make me so happy, keep it up and take your time with everything!!:) congrats on the house
With only tow pokemon is this challange nearly impossiple to play in diamond and pearl, but in platinum you can use a fullteam, so its possible
I'd recommend you watch FlygonHG's D/P fire type run.
When Silph mentions that he "thinks something will be helpful later on" you know he's foreshadowing a fully calculated move haha
Just found your channel but I have watched all your nuzlockes in a couple days. I like how you break it down.
I was amazed you made it through the water gym with zero losses. Another great run
"You're a real freak aren't ya" had me crying 😂
Keep doing these videos man, I get so excited to see your videos pop up in my feed. You're amazing so keep up the great work, you have my full support!
Nice, I was waiting so long for this and like your older vids, man this doesn’t disappoint, keep up the good work silph
keep up the work silph! love watching these on sunday evenings. can we get a white/black 2 bug type or flying type run next :)
"Characters introduced in Goblet of Fire." Although, as I recall there are two Bartys in that Book, so just renaming Magmortar to Barty Jr woulda done the trick. Also Igor and Karkaroff are the same dude, right?
32/6...that was too close for comfort. Amazing stuff like always. I hope things are well with you and MissSilph, otherwise! Congrats on your new home, by the way! :)
I’m honestly surprised we were able to win this but then again you did incredible plays!! Really enjoyed this run Silph. PS: I really appreciate the HP nicknames theme 😄
"Sack-ooh-rack-oh" Silph I'm DIEING. "Sah-koo-rah" as in, the "sakura" (cherry blossom) trees from Japan, and "co" as in A FRIGGIN' COMPANY!!
Strat against Fantina was sick. So great. Looking forward to the remainder of the video
You turned Barty into Mad Eye.. I see you and your plan!!
Alternatively you could have just called Magmortor Barty Jr.
Been stuck in my room with The Virus all weekend. This vid is just what I need! Love your content Silph.
You’re the man, Silph. I love your vids! It makes me want to try these kinds of challenges
Ayyy, one of the guys responsible for getting me back into Pokemon!
HES BACK OH MY GOD
Impish nature is +Defense, - Minus Special Attack, for the record.
Can we all just sit back and appreciate how funny and great silphs commentary is and how he makes this game more alive by bringing in Random NPC's talking sh*t? Thanks dude. Your videos make my day!!
What a good run! Always quality man!! Keep up the great work!
Yay! Fire! Thanks for the run. Had fun.
I was genuinely invested at the end. I did not expect a victory with that Garchomp. Igor the Champ!
Yes!!!! I was missing this vídeos!!? Thanks Silph
Yes. OH YES! By far the best combination for me. Anything where Houndoom is a viable encounter is sublime. I am so excited I can't even wait to comment. Even the sponsor is amazing. Do your best!
I still love that Barry, Mr. My-blood-is-made-of-energy-drink-and-cocaine, has the two 1% honey tree pokemon on his team...
I love watching your hardcore nuzlockes and they inspire me to attempt my own. I was going to do a B2/W2 fire type nuzlocke because Arcanine is my favourite Pokemon, wish me luck! And good luck to all your future challenges :)
Correction, Impish INCREASES def and DECREASES sp attack
You should have realized the first run was doomed to die when you named him Diggory. The only thing that would have been better is if he was kiled by Ratata lol
THERE SHOULD BE 3 T'S IN RATTATA!
Most impressive Silph typically with your nuzlocke challenges your houndoom is one of the first to die, but this time it was the last pokemon standing.
Everytime you say "permanently boxed" i imagine you throwing haymakers at already fainted pokemon xD great vid as always
Great job as always, Silph for being in recommended
For a second, I thought this was a Diamond/Pearl run and got confused since FlygonHG already attempted one.
Silph means quality content, i am so hyped, havent even watched. Lets go. Silph keep it up mate, your content is great!
My favorite CZcamsr hit us again with another masterpiece! Great vid!!!
21:47 man I love your sense of humor so much xD
27:51 i can't please call the bondulance
I never knew there was a hidden return tm in the tower! Quite creepy!
The comedic timing of Victor sniffing the grass is perfect!
All hail Igor! Houndoom is actually my second favorite Pokémon of all time (: Great video, Silph!
Another awesome video, man. Keep it going!
I could never do the bicycle trick in wayward cave to get the earthquake tm.
3 things:
1: I'm fairly certain I suggested you doing this in Diamond/Pearl, but I was trolling.
2: I realised the difference mid-way through the E4, the difference between Nuzlocke and Non-Nuzlocke faints. Non-Nuzlocke be like "Well... that sucks..." whereas Nuzlockes turn people into Darth Vader like "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
3: The shot at the end with Houndoom blocking Rapidash's face reminded me of a Platinum League run I did with only Eeveelutions (minus Unbreon as Team limit is 6, not 7). On the Hall of Fame screen, Leafeon's tail was covering up Glaceon's face. The slight tilt it had was priceless, it was like Leafeon had literally smacked him in the face like "Move over b***h". XD
I mean, Rapidash could've been Barty Sr. and Magmortar could've been Barty Jr., still keeping with the theme.
You were so far off with impish... You did get me to comment 😂
I do a lot of breeding, impish is +defense and -special attack
This time on "Infernape basically solo's sinnoh"
Most OP starter ever gotta love it tho
Love seeing Houndoom annihilate stuff. Good job!
Cynthia with the egg is just Pokémon games continuing the tradition of moms trying to get rid of their child as fast as possible.
Thanks silph for making my weekends close with the top tier nuzlockes
welcome back silph, really missed your videos, youre the best!
also heres a suggestion: mono electric types on platinum, there are enough encounters for a full team, however you gotta make a small modificattion to give yourself hidden power TM early like in DP otherwise first gym is impossible.
edit: i justt realized this was the second time cynthia commited a huge missplay on using dragon rush instead of earthquake which gave you the win. dang, for the so called hardest champion she really throws the matches against you (although you have 2 losses recorded against her in your BD mono water and pearl mono normal.)
THERE SHOULD BE ONLY ONE T IN SUGGESTION! AND FIRST DOES NOT END WITH 2 T'S!
@@Amelia4111 my keyboard was acting up ok? i didnt even noticed it

Yes, Tropius is my favorite HM Helper!
Yes, helper. Tropius is my friend and inspiration, never any less. 😤
Bravo , as a Fire type trainer 👏🏻 congratulations on great success 🙌 , I've fire monotyped every single pokemon game and the DPP are by far the hardest games as a Fire trainer.
You're my favorite nuzlocker bro 🥺 thanks for this!
I won't lie, even with the boost in Platinum, because of the limited pool for fire types I sensed a fail...all hail the ironically named pairing of Igor and Karkaroff!
He finally remembered his CZcams Password!
Excited to be here early, let's see what Silph can pull off!
That was a fun run to watch, I would love to see (or even hear if its possible) a electric only fire red run. I did think you might need an electric starter to help you through brocks gym though.
I don’t think a level capped (level 14) pikachu can take down Brock’s geodude and onix. There’s 1 more mandatory hiker on the route to bills house and at least one in rock tunnel. That’ll be hard too. The one on the route to bills can have just a machop and geodude If you pick right but hard for pikachu. The rock tunnel one has 2 geodudes and a graveler, idk how pikachu and voltorb beat that. You can get a voltorb next on route 10 (leading to rock tunnel), then a jolteon from the free eevee in celadon. Lastly after surf you could get either magnemite or electabuzz in the power plant. So 4 encounters…
Assuming you get past Brock (or make some rule change to allow it), rock ground types will still cause pain. Giovanni, hikers, and Bruno’s 2 onyx’s will be pain. Jolteon’s double kick and electabuzz’s brick break are you’re too guaranteed ways of damage, but both are very frail. If your rule set allows Zapdos, have that be your power plant encounter with steel wing. Ground immunity. Also hope that one of those 4 gets hidden power ice, grass or water.
If you’re seriously trying this on emulator, I don’t think pikachu could beat Brock so I’d recommend using the universal randomizer to get chinchou as a starter. Either ditch it or keep it a free encounter to not make the run quasi impossible. The run would still be hard hard but that cheat encounter makes it theoretically possible. But Brock is what really makes the run pretty much impossible.
Or if you’re committed to trying it no cheats/no rule breaks for Brock, do it in let’s go where your partner pikachu (or any pikachu) gets double kick for Brock, and your partner pikachu gets a water move. Overall the other mons get better moves too and tms are infinite. Imo that’s the Kanto game to do an electric run.
@@maguirebentz797 Chances of him getting a electrabuzz is slim so I figured that could be a starter as well. I dont know if if can be done but it sure as hell would be a challenge. Even a ruby/sapphire electric run requires a starter change and would not be easy to get past the first gym.
@@barrybludgeon7448 *THERE IS NO R IN ELECTABUZZ!*
@@Amelia4111 I know, but im going to leave it there to see how many others pick up on it or to see how rent free I can live in peoples minds lol.
You're absolutely DESTROYING Jan from Pokémon challenges when it comes to nuzlocke horniness
Flareon is my favorite Pokemon. Out of all the things it could do to save the run, tanking a physical hit from Garchomp would have been the last thing I would have predicted.
So... did anyone else catch the Monster's Inc. thing at the end or was it just me? Also what did that mean? BTW I just started a Randomized Dragon Type run on Pokémon White inspired by your own Dragon's only video and Sliph, you can bet that I'll have a Kingdra on the team!
finally, a nickname theme i understand! amazing video, as always.
Loved the goblet of fire themed names

Sylph: Alrighty then, guess i'll have to pay child support
Vergil from 40.000 miles away: *I feel a disturbance*
love it Silph, keep it up :)
The naming convention is lowkey genius. Cedric DIGGORY, VICTOR Krum, BARTY Crouch...all characters from Harry Potter: Goblet of FIRE
That champion battle was really intense! I thought it was all over for a second.
40:15 Rapidash got Wazowski'd by Houndoom, lmao!
welcome back, hope the move went well!
21:03 hey what’s wrong with blowing a white flute ;)😂
Alright the toaster laughing had me snort laughing idk why it caught me so off guard
i have a weird nuzlocke idea! a nuzlocke using only pokemon who have survived your past nuzlockes!
great run ! reminds of flygons attempt
I love your videos. I've been contemplating a fire only run in X. (I'm currently in the middle of a dark run on Shield.) A rock only of Black 2/White 2. That'd be interesting.
It's just so funny to see Silph over think on how to battle with Barry with his under leveled Chimchar and I beat Barry with my Turtwig spamming Absorb
"We'll need that speed to be as high as possible."
See what you did there
