- “Battle commences at Hougoumont: Jerome’s columns put in motion, drew the fire of our battery upon them, to which theirs replied. Close fighting at Hougoumont … The enemy press on and approach the masked wall, from whence the crashing fusillade astounds them…”
Edward Cotton, an English soldier who survived the defense of Hougoumont, published his account in 1849 in “A Voice from Waterloo.” It is viewable on Google Books here:
books.google.com/books?id=e08E...
Our video is based loosely on Cotton's account, summarized at page XIV of his table of contents, and quoted above. Cotton remained at the property as a guide to visitors in the decades after the battle. At the back of his book are engravings and also a collection of other soldiers' personal accounts of Waterloo.

A video by Peter Snow that shows this place in real life and explains its significance - and asks for donations to preserve Hougoumont - is at • The Project Hougoumont... . This battle was the conclusion of the War of the Seventh Coalition.
Château d'Hougoumont is a stone farmhouse with barns and a demolished manor house and chapel surrounded by formal gardens, stone walls, and a woods and gardens on its south and west. It still stands, near Waterloo, in Belgium. At the battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, this property was occupied by the English Coldstream guards, Scots, and also various Dutch and German states infantry who took positions in the woods. The legions of Napoléon Bonaparte awaited in their lines to the south behind a ridge. As part of the opening act of this battle, French mortars began to bombard Hougomont.
Then, around 11:30 in the morning, the first wave of French infantry poured north over the ridge and down across a plain towards the woods led by Maréchal de Camp Bauduin and his First Brigade of the Sixth Division. Before his brigade reached the woods, however, they were peppered with round shot from English batteries that unmasked themselves upon a ridge. Only counter fire by French batteries relieved the advancing French from the cannon fire. Bauduin was shot off his horse by a Hanoverian rifleman or Nassau skirmisher in the woods.
More assaults on the farmhouse, including one from the opposite side on the north, were all ultimately repelled but at heavy cost, and with one brief break-in accomplished through the northern gate by a Frenchman named Legros. Almost Legos.

Man, I came here in 2021 to show my respect! I've seen this video dozens of times but I've never realized how close to the history it was made! I decided to make my own Waterloo lego battle and started to read about the Hougoumont farm, checked how it looked like and than once again watched your video. I was shoked that you made a real copy of this farm! Earlier I thought it was just an abstract building in your film but now I understand that it's a real copy of Waterloo Hiugoumont farm!!! My respect!
thanks bud it all makes me miss the good old days. water well was key

I'm French, so i was really surprised and laughing when I heard the soldiers speaking french ! xD
Very good video, one more like for you !
Now that he made waterloo, he should make Austerlitz !
Why not. It would be quite the same thing, except that the french empire would win.
So it would be more interesting to make a battle that has nothing to do with Napoléon 1er.
Like... Idk, maybe the Secession War, or the 100 years War (i don't know what is the english name...) to stay with the France idea.
C'est la mamie chose en anglais, guerre de 100 ans. Et il y a dejas une video a ce sujet ^^ Mais les anglais gagnent.
Oh ok, i'll check that ^^
J'ai vraiment été surpris moi aussi XD !!
WOW!!! Distinguished! Animation, editing, sfx, light, set bulilding... and an informative description. Everything is perfect!!!! Really unsurpassable... too much for me :D

Still my absolute favorite one of your videos. Most detailed LEGO animation I've seen.
Wanna let you know man you were the main reason i got into historical lego mocs and stop motion. Thank you
They french soldiers saying "show them our balls" sound like my french cousin.
Lmao
That had to be the most brutal battle I've ever seen you do so far
French Commander "Let's show them our balls!" Me : WHAT!
This gives me nostalgia I remember when me and my dad watched "Waterloo" since we both loved this era, thanks man!
Geez I love this guy. He most put SO much effort into his videos to have quality like THAT
I would say I'd buy some, but they're probably pretty expensive.
If those muskets are brickmania overmolded, they cost 15-20 dollars EACH.

they are just painted

yes
+Brick Dictator where do the cannon barrels come from?
+The Prusso-Hungarian Empire Dude it's sold at woody's customs but I don't know where the mortars sold at.
Hougoumont, the most horrific and most British part of the Battle of Waterloo, some historians describe it as a battle inside a battle, and we should all respect the men who fell to keep that Farmhouse, at the end of the day the centre house had been destroyed and the walls were rubble, we should respect the Coldstream guards for such a stand, the the French for the offensive.
You're animation never ceases to amaze me
its not just the brilliant stop motion that makes these so goodLook at the points of view, the scene cutting, the pacing, the musicand unlike so many lego movies, add tension, a story line, and historical accuracy par excellenceCan't wait for more
This is awesome man good job
Please make more like this, I can't stop watching this video!

Amazing! The guns and the cannons were really nice, and of course the effects and the hats and the minifigures and the map and... o wait that's everything in the movie...
Make Austerlitz please ! :)
tiploum59 really want to . views on the waterloo video don't justify a big one though
Brick Dictator That's too bad, Napoleonic is my favourite era and I would love to see more animations on it, but hey its life. Also just found your videos, they are amazing - subbed.
tiploum59 truly Austerlitz would be thrilling
Elbert Pham I would love to, but, WWII makes 3x the money or more per minute of animation, so far at least

Short video yet extremely captivating owing to the EXCELLENCE of the animation and the Lego pieces (uniforms, guns, farmhouse...). The description is also very informative and well organized! Congratulations for the whole job and thanks for fighting to preserve Hougomont, Brick Dictator :)!
PS: Respect to the brave soldiers from both sides who were wounded or slain in this whole bloody battle! Let the nations who fought there never declare war on each other ever again! Europe and the world want peace :))!
Great video! You do a really good job of capturing the feel of the battle. Keep up the great work!
Absolutely love your videos they are so damn cool! Just wondering could you do more aerial shots cos ur battles usually only have angles from the ground/minifig head height...
that's harder to do

I watch this almost several times a week, I love it so much. Fantastic animation, effects, sound, and perfect attention to detail: This is my absolute favorite LEGO animation. Hope to see some more Napoleonic/gentlemanly warfare animations in the future!
First
Lmao
My great great great great great grandfather fought in the battle of waterloo
I loved this film, but I have a little nit-pick with some of the uniform accuracy. The Kings german legion (the unit in defence of the farm I believe) wore the "Belgic" shako, not the "Stovepipe" ones as seen in this film. Was it easier for you to use these, or did they still wear them during waterloo. Let me know.
The defenders of hougumont were the king's german legion foot guards AND the historic Coldstream guards
And the coldstream guards wored Belgic shako before the bear skin cap
The green ones?
I really like this LEGO 1815 "Battle of Waterloo at Hougoumont" recreation animation! You did a really great job on it!
I love this film so much, I think its my favourite out of all ur animations. I hope ur doing well, and I look forward to seeing more work from u in the future.

You definitely are on his level now.
You make great animations
Can you do the Battle of Antietam of the American Civil War if possible ? Possibly the Battle of Gravelotte or Battle of Sedan of the Franco-Prussain War
would the battle of Gettysburg be a good battle
It would
How long does it take you to make one of these from concept to completion?
for me about 3 months
That was an amazing brick film it really showed you really what happened back then
I can just imagine how epic it must be to depict the attack of the Old Guard in lego.... surely a project to behold!

Brick dictator, I love how your videos have historical accuracy. I really like your description. It's an actual description!

Henrique Ribeiro hemorrhoids
Brick Dictator What?
Henrique Ribeiro Well Marshall is really the guy that made some of the worst battle planning here. Without Marshall he would have a better chance at winning.
***** Right now? During the battle he was actually there or they couldn't have arrested him.
***** Thanks. That was what I meant.
Yo brick dictator u make amazing stop motion vids keep it up bro thanks
By far your best work yet. I'd love to see how you script and storyboard all this madness.
***** thanks. we just pick the music and then read accounts of what happened then start taking pictures. We knew generally the whole 40-second climax part of the music should be the shootout at the end, and we filmed that first. If every scene is just 1 second or so, it's easy to pick the order later and not plan in advance.
The Lego Napoleonic wars were terrible, but the Lego Great War (WW1) was worse.
Brickpoleon was an ass. But Kaiser Brickhelm was a dick.
