Awesome tutorial and advice. You are like a lighthouse of all FSD newbies. I really like your calm demeanor while in FSD mode & explaining etc. Thanks for everything you have done in CZcams & Tweeter. You have enlighten me with Tesla cars, their mission, fundamentals & made me a long term investor as well.

Thanks for this primer. Very helpful. I was getting frustrated watching your 2x demos not understanding that you are actively working with the Beta. Gives me the perspective I need to continue working with my 3-week experience with this system.

Thank you for that good advice. I just got the FSD software about a week ago. Before I saw your video I got pissed when FSD screwed up. From now on I'll consider it a man/ machine hybrid driving system where we help each other depending on the circumstances.

I watched your videos prior to picking up my first M3 last Thursday and over the last few days I've discovered that, just as seen in your videos, how useful FSD is. With no experience I have been able to quickly start using it regularly each day without any fear. Like you explained FSD is probably a better driver than you I can say the same thing is true about my driving style. FSD definitely drives better than me and I'm OK with that. The difference in drive time between my driving style and FSD is probably less than a minute for most of local trips and I end each FSD driven trip much more relaxed. Thanks for properly setting my expectations for my use of FSD!

Excellent video! Your concept of “hybrid” FSD beta usage is perfect for “correcting” the misperception that the current beta can be used on most trips with zero interventions. Using beta is analogous to using fixed speed cruise control… you wouldn’t use it in situations where intervention might be required such as on a winding mountain road. As you stated, do not rely on FSD beta when you think intervention may be required, and if you do use it during those situations assume it may fail, and be ready to take over. Thanks for educating new FSD beta users… like me!

10:20 is a very important point to make why FSD is crucial. Perhaps someone is in rush and is driving manually. The UPS truck obstructs the pedestrian walking. If that same driver goes around at a speed 10-15mph over the speed limit it is quite possible the manual driver strikes the pedestrian. However with FSD engaged, the car slows down going around the truck and is able to stop saving an tragic accident from occurring. this is the true power of FSD.

A few other suggestions: I hold the wheel at the nine and four positions. The nine because the turn stalk is between the third and fourth finger so if the car suddenly signals it wants to change lanes, I can stop it rather quickly. The four position so I can monitor the back up camera continuously for surrounding traffic. The more traffic around you, the closer your foot should be to the accelerator/brake.
On turns, the hand position should be ready to disengage autopilot and your foot should be the near the accelerator in case you need to complete the turn manually.
On single lane roads where the biggest risk is a pedestrian comes out from parked cars or a car door opens suddenly, my hand positions change again. My left hand is ready to disengage fsd with a flick, hands at the nine and three positions, and foot hovering over the brake.
Your particular hand and foot positions may differ based upon your comfort level.
Fsd beta is actually a new form of driving as it's a level 2 adas at this moment. Like any new skill, it will take you 3 to 6 months to get proficient. Start slow with regular routes and at times of reduced traffic. It's a computer program so it will fail rather consistently at specific points in your trip. Use that to your advantage to anticipate problems. As new versions are downloaded, you will see those problems decrease over time but you have to be patient. We're talking weeks/months in some cases. You will feel like a sloth sometimes but fsd beta is definitely improving.
These videos, as entertaining as they are, doesn't really show how much attention is required when operating fsd beta. I'm not a proponent of seeing a free spinning steering wheel. As mesmerizing it might be for some viewers, it may be dangerous for others to emulate.

Great video and advice. I only turn my own in minimal traffic, at night and early morning. I actually don't mind manually driving my Tesla, as it is the best car I've ever driven (I've had a BMW, Toyota, and Mercedes).

I guess the biggest issue I have right now with FSD that I haven’t noticed your car doing is the phantom braking while on FSD. Do you have emergency forward collision off? Mine seems to brake a lot when there’s literally nothing ahead of me and not consistently in the same places. Idk if you have any suggestions for the time being 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'll be honest. I live in Toronto. When I'm going South on Hwy 400 (major highway) approaching Teston Rd., I always get phantom braking. There must be some signal interference. Maybe this why Tesla adding HD radar to perfect FSD. I'm no engineer but this crosses my mind as to why it happens

In your videos I don't see you touch the steering wheel at all - what prompts are you giving the "nag" system? Is it just the camera or are you using your right leg occasionally?

  • @mthuhn
    @mthuhn Před rokem

I just wanted to add when you take over for something that the car does wrong always try to use the break or the steering wheel so when Whole Mars took over at 3:11 he should have used the steering wheel instead of the stock. The reason why is because tesla has a priority system where stock disengagements are the lowest priority this type of disengagement should be only used for when you want to go another way but the car isn't doing anything wrong or at the end of a drive. Although data is still sent back to tesla with stock disengagements it is still at the lowest priority and probably won't be looked at right away as this is a way for them to filter out disengagements that they don't have to look at.

People need to chill out. Try to ealize how amazing the system is, not perfect but amazing. There is a learning curve to using Beta but after a few hundred miles of using it, it will become very natural. Soon you will use it for every drive.

Watching this I find myself with a hypothetical question: If Tesla Delivered a new model Y without rear view mirrors, pedals and steering wheel. Would you test drive it? (This would be a great question for you to share with other FSD people on Twitter.)

Try changing the following distance to 4 - 5 car lengths or even up to 7 car lengths. It does make a difference. You will feel the car use the brakes more often.

I hear you clearly, and I'm not mad at you - definitely I'm mad at Tesla as my 2017 Model S is a dumb donkey on City Streets, including just about every San Francisco street your videos show none of the idiotic behavior mine exhibits: blows through lights and stop signs where IT KNOWS (because it drew the correct Nav route) there's supposed to be a turn, or just gives up throwing a message FSD can't proceed...I have it in Service and they just claimed it works as deigned, so we'll see when I picked it up tomorrow!

Can't edit or reply to my comment, let's see if this works. I think the current implementation is actually more dangerous than no nagging at all because of my not realizing it stopped driving. I Have learned to keep my hands off entirely when it makes turns. How so you get so long between nags, most of the time I never get 15 seconds? The camera does do a good job if I foolishly pick up a phone or something ... think that is exactly what they need to rely on for nagging.
