- How to use Tesla Autopilot in 2024 for Beginners: In today’s new Tesla Model Y ‘How To Series’ video, I help beginners that are new to Tesla use one of its most popular features, Autopilot, like a pro. I show you how it works, its best features, what it’s not currently capable of and compare it to FSD (Full Self-Driving) and FSD Beta.

I received an email recently asking to identify the differences between certain modes of Autopilot, I thought I'd include this to help explain each one a bit better.
Enhanced Autopilot is kind of a recent distinction so Tesla moved things around on capabilities and pricing. Think of it like this…
Autopilot - Smart Cruise Control that will drive straight in a lane, slow down & speed up based on traffic, but won’t do lane changes.
Enhanced Autopilot - Autopilot, but will auto-lane change and will drive your car from a highway's on-ramp to off-ramp signaling & changing lanes, adjusting to traffic all on its own.
FSD - Enhanced Autopilot, but will change lanes on the highway for you. Also stops at stop lights & stop signs.
FSD Beta - Turn by turn driving from point A to point B by entering a destination address including in cities. This is currently the closest we have to actual full self-driving.
All of these require driver supervision with the ability to takeover if needed.

Update Sept 3, 2022: In the Tesla 2022.24.6 software update I believe it disabled radar in my April 2021 Model Y as well as Auto-High Beam is turned on at night when Autopilot is on with no way to disable it. So far it seemed like it wasn't working great and would randomly turn high beams on/off, but no way to disable in settings.

Update August 24, 2022: As pointed out by a viewer Tesla has apparently now started to turn off radar in cars equipped with it for the first time and updating them to Tesla vision only via software. This was not the case at the time of filming this video. It's unclear if this is going to include doing this on all Tesla's that are already radar equipped or if they're just testing a small segment, but let's hope it doesn't cause those cars to also have issues with phantom braking.
What's odd about this development is it hasn't been widely reported and there's nothing official on Tesla's website. Tesla only mentions transitioning new cars to Tesla Vision only. While there's plenty of articles from 2021 reporting Tesla would no longer include radar hardware in new cars, there was never a mention of turning it off in cars already equipped with it. The only article I can find was posted on August 24, 2022 although the viewer mentioned it in early August.

Thank you for this video. I just got my MY on Friday and this was very helpful. Most of the other Videos on Autopilot kept adding in FSD information which made it confusing on what was available and what was not. This one was perfect. Only criticism would be that camera could have been a little lower so we could see out the window better in what was ahead. But that is minor

What is the maximum speed for autopilot now 80 or 90?
I believe 80 for models with Tesla Vision only and 90 for models like mine that still have radar as well. I got mine last April 30 just before they removed radar (I believe prematurely).

If the speed limit changes you can press the right stalk down, for one second, and the speed set point will adjust to the new speed limit.

Yo! my 2022 Model 3 LR is suppose to arrive on or before May 18th. The Tesla rep called me earlier last week and told me the process was moving along on time and as scheduled…I’m Super Pumped!

@@Supreme2u Mine was on time. The date fluctuated a little bit, but was about 4 weeks from order to delivery day. I did buy just before delays started so was lucky in that regard.
I use FSD on the FL Turnpike. To keep the 'Reminder' from engaging, I put my hand through either side of the crescent shaped opening of the steering wheel, letting my wrist rest on it. The weight of my arm is enough and just switch sides occasionally.
That was awesome. I am getting ready to order my MY performance.

Tesla Owners - What's your favorite Autopilot feature? Or if you're new to Tesla or still waiting for delivery, what feature are you most excited about? Also... I have no idea why my cheeks are so red in this video 🤷♂️ I'll chalk it up to the fact it's been freezing and snowing here in Nashville the last couple days. 🥶
I got my delivery for my 2022 model 3 back in December 2021, so far it’s been a great car. The only problem that I noticed is when using cruise control and autopilot. So far I experienced phantom braking 4x. This is on a 2 lane road and on the freeway with no vehicles next to me. Glad I was able to control the car and there was no vehicles around me. I’m a little hesitant on using cruise control and autopilot at this point. Software has been updated to the latest 2021.44.30.7. Any thoughts on this?

@@jordan2733 No there isn’t a way to turn it off, not to my knowledge. I believe this the safety features of Tesla.
@@michaelcrz1430 I know in the settings under Auto Pilot you are able to toggle of Automatic Emergency Breaking, i just didnt know if that turns it off just when using auto pilot or for everything.

Yes I do have FSD. I pay monthly. That may be the difference right there, but even without a distention plugged into the nav. autopliot still will stop at stop signs and signal lights. It's really cool.
Yep. That's FSD. Will not work properly with just standard Autopilot. If you don't have FSD, the car will not stop at stop signs or lights and won't (usually) turn on Autopilot without lane markings if it's just standard Autopilot. Only FSD will do that. Even if you don't put in an address on yours, it's still using the advanced FSD software which is different from standard Autopilot.

If you just have regular Autopilot it will automatically disengage when you change lanes and you simply press the stalk down twice again and it'll turn back on. There's also now a setting to turn your blinker off automatically so you'll never forget to.
If you have FSD you don't need to do anything as the car will stay engaged even if you change lanes and will just keep cruising.

When basic Auto Pilot is on and it performs slowing down for traffic in front of us, does the Tesla also do the Re-Generation feature to help with braking and the battery? I assume it would if Re-Gen single pedal is turned on.

It does use regen when on Autopilot 👍🏻
You can also respond to the “Apply slight force” prompt by tapping the right stalk.
Oh I haven’t tried that one. I knew changing the volume on the scroll wheel or speed would work, but hadn’t tied tapping the stalk. Thanks 👍
Yes, I'm always attentive to it, also keep in mind as a BETA tester you are required to use it as often as possible in all situations that is the whole point of the system to give it different and unique situations to navigate. I can navigate from my house to my business, which is about 21 miles, that includes 2 major freeways and a few side streets. When I start the drive on my street there is no lane markings. I put it in autopilot from a stand still and to just goes. It's great.
That's great! It's such a nice convenience for trips/commutes. Just for others reading this, John does have FSD which is why his works with no lane markings, stop signs and street lights. We discussed this in another thread.

So to summarise autopilot will keep me in my lane at the speed I set + offset and will slow down and stop and start again depending on traffic.
Cruise control is like that apart from the steering?
Correct. Difference being it will come to a complete stop if needed and go again. Also it will look at other traffic and adjust if a car gets too close or was about to hit you. It just won't auto lane change for you or stop at stop lights / stop signs. For that you'd need to pay for "FSD".

SUPER DOPE Upper! My 2022 Model 3 LR LR suppose to be delivered on or before May 18th. A Tesla rep called me earlier last week and said the process was going smoothly and I should be getting a txt soon with the VIN and I’m pumped! I asked her about the batteries and the control surface pro. I was told I would most likely have the LiPo but the control surface should have the Intel pro which is fine by this geeks mind. I prefer the device responds faster to my touching gestures and screen refresh. Does anyone know if they are STILL accepting beta drivers at this point in time?
I believe so. Check your screen settings to see if there's a button to enter. You do have to be an FSD paying customer to do this.

Nice video. I have only test-driven Tesla M3 and MY so far, and just tested the basic AutoPilot on a highway yesterday, which I didn't think to do during first test driver. What I am struggling with now is how to protect myself from sporadic occurrences of "phantom braking" on an open road when least expected? Do I have to keep my foot close to the accelerator pedal at all times? So far I have not seen any work-arounds with any AutoPilot settings that would prevent this or reduce this from happening? Tesla has certainly been silent about this TACC problem. This problem has plagued Tesla not for 4-5years. Do you have any insight on dealing with this? Have you experienced it?
Oh yeah, I’ve talked about this often in my videos of late. No workaround other than keeping your foot near the accelerator like you said. It barely ever happened to me until they turned radar off, then it started happening all the time. Good news is after the last update it rarely happens to me so hopefully they’ve ironed out some issues, but time will tell.
I am not technically inclined, but I am heavily invested in Tesla, and I need a new car. I just answered a lot of my questions thank you for the walk through.

Noticed that video was shot on I-280 just above the Stanford Campus, near Tesla's Engineering HQ in Palo Alto. It's pretty and very smooth, easy for the autopilot to navigate and stay within lanes. What's trickier is if you take it on Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz, where it goes through the Santa Cruz mountains, and the winding 2 lane hwy (each way) has heavy traffic and hairpin curves. I tried it, and I did not trust it on a few of the curves, especially with freight trucks just inches away from my Tesla. I took over, in a few cases, because I didn't feel confident that with multiple decisions having to be made (curve + trucks + onramp traffic, rain with slick wet highway, bumper to bumper traffic moving at 55 mph,) that it would be safe. It's too unsettling to trust it under those conditions.
Oh you're talking about the Tesla stock footage during the FSD part? Yeah that was in CA. The majority of my video was shot near Nashville. As for Autopilot... yep, it still has plenty of quirks. I mainly use it for long, mostly straight interstate driving and then it does really well (outside of recent phantom braking issues). I've had a lot of issues too with it taking windy curves too fast. And while FSD beta looks promising... the stuff companies like Waymo are doing is I think even more impressive, but Elon has some desire to remove technology before having a replacement. At least Steve Jobs had a replacement ready to go before removing things like the floppy drive or DVD drives or USB-A. 🤷♂️
At 9:21 "let off the brake", why would my foot be on the brake? You mean acceleration pedal? Confusing, but otherwise very helpful.
We just got our 2022 Model 3 RWD on March 18th and I feel there needs to be a great deal of improvement to autopilot. We've been driving a 2019 Kia Niro EV for three years and I much prefer its smart adaptive stop and go cruise over Tesla's autopilot. For one thing, Tesla's system is very touchy and drops off with the slightest pressure on the wheel and on our first mini road trip (300 miles round trip) we had three occurrences of phantom braking in 75 MPH Los Angeles freeway traffic. The third one was pretty scary as our car suddenly started to brake strongly even though there wasn't a car anywhere near us in front but there was one behind us who had to brake quickly. That experience has me not trusting the system. This was something I was really looking forward to but I guess changing from radar to cameras has created a lot of bugs that need to be worked out. I love our new Model 3. It's a wonderful car to drive and I find myself taking it out for no reason at all but for the pure joy of driving it. I have no doubts autopilot will be fixed with over the air updates but until then I'm sticking to cruise control only. FYI, we ordered in August 2021 and Tesla honored the price from that time frame even though they delivered a 2022 with the new LFP battery, lithium-ion 12 volt, and Ryzen chip. The 7 1/2 month wait was well worth it.
Hey Brian - Thanks for the comment. Tesla definitely was premature in removing radar and going solely with Tesla Vision. I was one of the lucky ones as I got mine on April 30th of 2021 so was about a month before they removed radar. I don't have any of those issues, but sure feel bad for the people that do. I had 2 or 3 phantom braking incidents in the first couple months of ownership, but after a couple software updates it was gone and haven't had one luckily in probably 8 or 9 months (knock on wood).
I also love driving mine, but with how much I travel it would have ruined my experience if I had that many issues. The 3 main reasons I got a Tesla were for Camp Mode, Autopilot and the performance. 9 days and I get my Y performance… I’m so psyched. I did get the FSD - I’m in my 60’s and have a long commute to work each day. Though I’m a very safe driver-I know I’m getting older and want the extra “eyes” - should be an interesting experience..

I've hear that it doesn't automatically change speed when going through a new speed limit sign, is that true? If so, I think I'd rather set it to "current speed" which seems to give you more freedom of the speed (I.e doesn't automatically speed up if you're purposely travelling under the speed limit for any reason), and still allows you to switch quickly to the speed limit by tapping it on the screen (and maybe even holding the stalk down for half a second)
Hey Matt - It does and it doesn't. My experience is if you're on the interstate with Autopilot on and the speed limit changes, it does NOT change to the new speed. If you're however on a 2 lane road or highway and the limit drops it will slow down to 5 over whatever that speed limit is.
For the interstate I might have to try a couple of the different settings to see how Current Speed will change it. My understanding is it will just turn on to whatever your current speed is and any other parameters like % over over fixed number. The way I have it set is 2% over the current speed limit. Using Current Speed will probably work better for the scenario you mentioned.
@@bryanhauer I've just read somewhere else that it will drop the speed of the speed limit drops, and will rise again if the speed limit increases, but only if you haven't intervened in between. But also that it will only rise back up to the original speed limit that was set, no higher.
So for example, if you set it in a 50 and drive into a 40, the speed will drop, then go back into a 50 it will rise to 50, and then go into a 60 it will stay at 50 as that was the original set speed.
Something to try out! Not that that scenario is very likely
I’ve always wondered but while you are on auto pilot, if you steer the wheel will the vehicle turn with the steering wheel and disengage auto pilot?
Correct. Once you apply enough force to the wheel, the car will come out of Autopilot. I sometimes do this if I notice a car ahead coming into my lane or if Autopilot might be hugging the inside part of a lane on a curve. I'll then grab the wheel and start to turn it and Autopilot will give you a beep that it's turning off because you took over.
How often does the alert come up to touch the wheel? Every 60 seconds, every 5 mins? Does it report anything to tesla if you drive like that, or is this the normal way of doing it? Thanks.
It has an eye tracking camera above the rear-view mirror so it depends on how often you look away from the road, but every minute or so I'd say. It doesn't report anything to Tesla and Autopilot is one of the main features of a Tesla so its use is encouraged. If you don't touch the wheel after a few attempts at warning you it will give an audible alert and then eventually if you just continue to ignore it, it will pull over.
I've only had my tesla for a couple months. I think autopilot is great on a freeway. I fiund it to be rather dodgy on local roads. Its done some scary stuff. I highly recommend keeping your hands on the wheel at all times.
For sure. I mainly use it on the interstate on long road trips which I think it’s great for. Has a lot of improvements needed though like you said outside of that.
When using cruise control and you have to stop, you disengage cruise control. So far this is normal. However, wondering how you get back into cruise control with the previous speed settings? This is like the resume function. Do I have to manually get to the correct speed then double-tap the stalk or is there some way to resume the previous speed setting?
Just reengage and it should automatically return the whatever setting you have set in Autopilot settings. I have mine to go a few mph over the stated speed limit. Anytime you touch the brake it would have to be restarted again, but would just go back to whatever setting you have set in Autopilot features. If you're using Autopilot and disengage by say turning the wheel, you'll still continue at the current cruise control speed, but the car just won't steer until you press to have Autopilot started again.

Just double pull down the right stalk like I did in the video. Once for cruise or twice for Autopilot.

Yep. Sure does. Day or night it works the same. Rain or snow as well as long as conditions aren’t slippery and the lines on the road are clearly visible.

Yep. I think I mentioned it towards the beginning of the the actual demonstration. You just push the right scroll wheel on the steering wheel to the right or left to adjust distance.

Looking into getting a Model 3 Performance here soon, and I'm wondering if the 2020 is a worth it or should I try for a newer 21 or 22? I imagine they're mostly identical but just curious. Also with autopilot and FSD can I "say: take me to work" for example, not literally, and the car would drive me from my house to work as long as all the roads are properly marked? Or would I need to be already driving and select the destination, then it would drive me there? Thanks
Hey Jeff - I think the 2020 is probably pretty close as far as features, but the thing Tesla does different is they don't release updates on a yearly basis so saying 2020 Model 3 doesn't really mean the same it would mean for a traditional car. Tesla updates their car sometimes every month so a June 2020 Model 3, might be completely different from an August 2020 Model 3.
Also you need to take into consideration that used vehicles are extremely overpriced right now. Probably the most in modern history. Up some 40% the last year alone. Tesla's are already a great car for how little they depreciate so my suggestion would be to buy new since the cost of used is so high currently. It's a sellers market for used vehicles.
As for FSD... yes you can give a voice control to "Let's go home" or "Let's go to work" style commands as long as those addresses are saved, but what you're describing is only available for FSD Beta users as regular FSD only does the driving from highway on-ramp to off-ramp. You can of course use it to also drive on city streets that are clearly marked, but it won't take turns or take you directly to the destination unless you're a FSD Beta users.
Here's a quick breakdown of each level of autonomy...
Autopilot - Standard on every new Tesla: Will do adaptive cruise control, lane centering and will drive by itself while in a lane on a clearly marked road or highway including slowing down all the way to a complete stop and speeding up on its own, but you have to change lanes, do turns, stop at stop signs and stop lights.
FSD - $12,000 or $199/mo: Will do everything Autopilot does + will change lanes on highways by itself, auto-park, summon and will stop at stop signs and stop lights.
FSD Beta - Everything Autopilot and FSD includes + ability to put in a destination on navigation and have the Tesla drive you there on its own including on city streets. You still have to pay attention/alert and have to be approved by Tesla into the FSD Beta program. You can apply from the screen in your car and if accepted, you will be graded by a Tesla algorithm that monitors your driving including eye-tracking, habits and safety and you will be kicked out of the program if your "safety score" falls below their accepted limit. You must be an FSD user to apply.

@8:00 does the car disable autopilot by itself it it sees a stop sign? (so you can take over?) or do you need to disengage it?
It disables when you touch the brake. Regular Autopilot doesn't include auto stopping at stop lights or stop signs so you need to takeover and brake. When you press the brake to stop it disengages Autopilot. Once you start going again you have to tap the right stalk down twice to re-engage.
If you pay for FSD, it will auto stop. Of course to turn onto a new street you'd have to take over unless you're using FSD Beta which takes you from Point A to Point B including turns.
There's 3 forms of Autopilot...
Standard Autopilot (Available for free with every new Tesla) - Smart Cruise Control that will drive straight & keep it's lane & will slow/stop for traffic, but won’t do lane changes or stop at lights or stop signs.
FSD ($199/mo or $15k upfront) - Everything Autopilot has, but will change lanes in the highway for you & will stop at stop lights and stop signs.
FSD Beta - Turn by turn driving by the car from point A to point B.
* All still require some type of driver supervision. Basically you still need to be paying attention in case you come across a weird situation where the car won't know what to do.

On regular Autopilot yes. For FSD it will auto change lanes itself or you can do it and still keep going without disengaging.

Hey Andy - My current V11.0 build is 2021.44.30.11. Make sure when you go to Quick Controls --> Software, that you have Advanced selected. This allows you to get pushed the updates as soon as they come out.
Also make sure to update your phone's app to the latest software just to be sure.

Ive had a new M3 for 2 days now and still getting to grips with how it handles cruise and autopilot. In my old car - Merc A200, it sensed the speed limits from road signs and set cruise speed (increase or decrease) accoringly as you drove from one speed limit to the next. Does the Tesla also do this in cruise mode or does it need to be in autopilot (lane assist) as well?
Hey Al - Yes you can have it auto adjust based on speed limit signs. It can do this in regular cruise control (Traffic Aware Cruise Control) or Autopilot. Just head to Quick Controls --> Autopilot --> Set Speed. You can set an offset like to have it auto go to 5 miles over or a % over the speed limit always. Then adjust using right scroll wheel on steering wheel. Just pull the stalk down once for traffic aware cruise and twice to engage Autopilot.
@@bryanhauer Not sure if I have correct settings but its not auto-adjusting when you go from one speed zone to another - all that changes is the speed limit indication in the red circle, the max speed number (that you can scroll up/down with the thumbwheel) and the car speed stay the same?

Good video. I have had my Model 3 LR for just a few months and find the Autopilot is not as good as the Autopilot in my Volvo XC90. When in Autopilot on the Volvo if I apply steering force to change lanes or correct the self steering it will disengage auto-steer but will reengage without having me to do anything, unlike the Tesla where I have to manually reengage for auto steer to work. Or if the Volvo "looses" the self steering ability it will reengage automatically once it can perform this function. The Volvo is seamless while the Tesla is not so. I assume this will improve since Auto-steer is in beta

When you disengage the cruise control with a brake or UP the stalk, I assume your feet is not on the acceleration pedel immediately, would the car apply regenerative break during that short period?
It might a little, but I tend to time it just right and you wouldn’t really notice is you were a passenger.

When you r on autopilot with 80mph speed limit, can you hit the accelerator pedal to move faster than 80 or it would just stay at 80?
Yes you can go faster, it’s just when in Autopilot driving by itself that you can’t set it for faster, but you can takeover at any point and drive faster.
What happens if you don't use steering wheel? Do you need minimum speed for start autopilot
No minimum speed as long as there's traffic in front of you, various reports of around 18 mph if not and if you don't use the steering wheel it will alert you after a while to touch it and if you don't it will turn autopilot off and depending on the situation may even pull over.
whats the button on the end of the stalk do when you press it ?
The right one puts the car in park (if it's not moving), the left activates the wipers.
If I pay $6000 for eap and want to buy fsd later on will I still have to pay full price for fsd? Or will it be discounted since I bought eap?
I believe it's discounted. You won't need to pay the full price all over again.
Yesterday I tried for the fist time. I only have Auto Pilot. It even took me out of freeway can it do that ? I thought that was only available on FSD

Does the one pull down enable just Cruise Control without Lane keeping and Distance keeping? And then two pulls down enables FSD? Hi Steve! Great question and one I'll need some help from the community on to verify. If you pull down just once it activates simple cruise control w/ no autosteering. If you pull down twice it will activate Autopilot, then if you pay for FSD, I believe it will also include the options for Navigate on Autopilot (which will change lanes & have those settings turned on) if you're on an Interstate highway. You can then enter a destination and it will drive w/ autosteer & lane change capability from on-ramp to off-ramp. My understanding is EAP will include everything except traffic light & stop sign control and autosteer on city streets.

My Model Y stops for green lights when in Autopilot. I have to tap the accelerator to get it to proceed through the light. Why??
Hey, thanks for the question... From my understanding this is working as designed. As mentioned in my video, normal Autopilot isn't designed to work with stop signs or stop lights even though it may see them on the screen. If there is no follow vehicle in front of you, the car will proceed with caution requiring you to tap the accelerator. You know you have made some very good points about the full self driving I don't like the fact that I have to tug in the steering wheel every few minutes or so it becomes a bother it would be better if you could just touch any type of button like stereo volume etc to let it know your not asleep you really do need to stay on your toes with feature because might a couple of time drove into another lane inside a tunnel with good lines on ground

I do believe you can just use the volume button as well as the right stalk and tap that to keep Autopilot engaged. I know for sure you can just scroll the speed up or down a mph. Thanks for the question... Destination doesn't pertain to regular Autopilot at all. That's only a feature FSD Navigate on Autopilot or FSD Beta.

Can it only drive or can it steer by itself?
It steers, stops, goes. In fact now, FSD Supervised will drive you from point A to point B. Just put in the address and hit Drive and it'll take you there 👍🏻 With regular Autopilot like I show in this video it'll drive, steer, stop, go etc all by itself. You have to change lanes manually, but otherwise it does pretty much everything else. With the new FSD Supervised though, it does everything for you. You still need to pay attention, but it can drive most places without any intervention.

No way to turn off that noise. You can lower it if you turn on "Joe Mode", but it's still too loud. Rumor is there will be an update soon that will allow you to lower it more.
Not sure what you mean about steer with autopilot engaged. That seems to defeat the purpose. You can of course just use regular adaptive cruise control by only pulling the stalk down once instead of twice. Hope that helps!
@@bryanhauer Like in my other el-car there is lane assist that tries to keep the car in the middle, so if there is a bump or pothole and I turn slightly to avoid it, the car will gently try to turn back to the middle. The Tesla on the other hand tries to fight me when I turn to avoid obstacles the car doesn't recognize, and suddenly lets go quite hard and disengages autopilot. This is not good at all.
Too many things are unfortunately not adjustable in the Tesla 😢Like anoying sounds, regen level and whiper auto sensitivity.
But at least the most crucial functions I need when driving are working flawlessly, like fireplace, fartingsound, lightshow, driving on mars, reindeersled etc and so on... 😖
