Knife Making: Nakiri Japanese Knife DIY
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 12. 2017
- Another Japanese Chef's knife! This shape is inspired by Nakiri knives typical Japanese-style vegetable knife but with a western full tang construction and a general utility bevel geometry.
The steel is 02 high carbon. Handle is made of ebony and teak (or oak, not sure) both aged well by a luthier and white vulcanized fiber liners.
The pins are all brass with the middle one in mosaic made by me in a previous ideo.
Clarification:
With the words "inspired by Nakiri knives" I wanted to point out that this knife is not an actual nakiri. The handle construction, bevel geometry and thickness have pretty much nothing to do with traditional japanese knives. This knife has been made to be used as a general purpose knife, that's why is thicker than you might expect!
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:

Yeah James! Looks like many did :)
James Hamr🔁
Yup
Me too xD
Hahaha me
I can't even begin to describe how much I like when fabrication videos play the sounds of the machining instead of some ABSOLUTELY ANNOYING techno/house music... SUBSCRIBED!!!
Thanks man! :)
Soooo trueee
I feel tired just watching the video. So much work and effort poured into this project, not to mention planning. I'm going to take a nap now.
lmao hahahah 😂😂🤣
You tired
It came out so gorgeous. I’m very impressed.
As a chef, this is my favorite knife! This custom design is amazing and the width of the blade makes it look more balanced and more comfortable for someone with big hands like me. I would love to get one of these to show off with at work!
Hi there! What do you think about this video length? Much longer than usual right? Too much? Let me know! :)

Black Beard Projects the length was great, content kept it interesting the whole time and the editing was great. Great job. Great knife.

I've always wanted to make a chef's knife for a project. I think I pulled a lot of inspiration out of this design.
As a chef of 20
Yrs I would love to have that in my collection. Awesome knife
As a 25 yo nurse. I know absolutely nothing about making knives and this stuf. But your videos are very calm, interesting and relaxing to watch! I watch a few every night! Keep the good work up! Love the restaurations the most!
Great video its like an unintentional ASMR, it makes me feel calm and relaxed
At first, I thought, "WTF?! He's gonna cut off the tang!"
Heh heh
Ernie Velveeta that’s exactly what I thought too haha
same here
Same! It took me a few watches through to finally get it
I totally thought that as well... almost rewound it to see what I was missing...
Me too
Really nice knife, but the bolt with a cut for sanding! Sheer brilliance! Excellent ☺
Thanks man :)
That knife is a thing of beauty and I'm sure a joy to use. Thank you for showing what can be created.with minimal equipment.
I watch a lot of kinfe making videos on CZcams and this knife is one of my favorites. Very good job on it keep them coming ...

Aww man my perspective was all off when you first were at the band saw, I swore you were cutting off the tang. Freaked me out something proper. Great video as always!

Lmao ... I thought the same as well. Great knife!!
Haha, me too! Now, after third time, I see what he's doing! xD
I panicked for a moment as well.
olaolapepsiman - the shape tessellates. It looks the same on both sides of the black line.
A chefs dream beautiful work
This craftsman's attention to detail is what gives the excellent's in the final result , What a beautiful piece of blade work !
So beautiful to see how such a knife is handmade. really calming and beautiful to watch
At the beginning when you were using the bandsaw to take off the most material i legit was like NOOO WHAT ARE YOU DOING, and then realized it was the other half
Haha! :') You'r not the only one telling me this :)
Niels Beeris ض
Haha i was like. "what is this?" hahaha
Niels Beeris waaaaaawawa2
so true xDDD
Wow what a lot of hard work the rough texture gives it a rustic look. I wish I could buy some to work with in my kitchen.
Thanks Lester :)
Holy dude that is one sick knife I'm a collector and this is very very nice, i have never seen one like this, you have real talent, you should be paid as a designer
Being a Chef, this is a very Beautiful 🔪, SALUTE! Craftsmanship at it's FINEST, SALUTE! Real Love for the Craft.

I love watching your videos! I bet you are tired of people asking but of you ever open a shop I will buy all your knives!
Love the design of the handle and the way the blade looks. Nice work👍
It was a pleasure watching you work; handsome result! I'd proudly purchase that blade!
I think this is one of your best yet
Thanks Russel :)
Beautiful knife, regardless of the disrespect in the comments. They're envious of your skills.
What skills, ability to cut and make a blade from a piece of paper? Or beat it to death for no reason? Or his inability to even harden the blade correctly?
@@alphadogforge3024 you sound like you got something stuck in your butt and its been there awhile and it must be really hurting you.
@@alphadogforge3024 just wondering but what's wrong with the way he hardened it?
Even after 5 years, I think this is your masterpiece!
What an absolute pleasure to watch. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful work.
Man, the is pure craftsmanship it is beautiful piece of work.
Ur mom is
Looks great man, I like that you used magnets to hold the pattern
Thanks brother :) I'm pretty sure I've seen it done somewhere, maybe Slavik Tely!
Who can thumbs down this video ? You did such magnificent job , what a beautiful knife ! I wish I could have made one . Thank you for sharing.
I imagine it’s because he showed how to fake a forged knife. I’m this case, there’s nothing wrong with his process because he’s not trying to hide the technique. However, some stock removal knife makers will attempt to deceive buyers by placing faux hammer marks into knife. It’s a deceptive tactic when used to hide a lack of skill.
BB you rock bro.
I love watching your stuff.
Great job!
that looks awesome! I always love hammered textures like that
Thank you brother :) :)
Paul's Garage did you sell it? I want

I would love to own that knife it's absolutely beautiful . wonderful craftsmanship
Incredible craftsmanship! Kudos!
I want the same but 10 times bigger, and with that I can scream “BaNKai !” in front of my tomatoes
Really, this is art. In comparison to the other CZcamsrs who make knifes, this is THE BEST LOOKING i’ve ever seen. Question: Do you still use the knife? Answer: I think that length of the video is good, you get all the details of the knife and the handle in only twenty minutes. Impressive!
Thank you sir! :) This knife was a commission work, so I sold it.
Black Beard Projects Oh okay. Hope you got what it's worth ;)
At what price ?
Black Beard Projects Great work man ! but if I want one how much can I give !? Thank you
Exqueliox v it wasnt actually 20 min he sped the video as u saw but still impressive
This is so beautiful. I would love to have a 3 piece filet set in this quality. Unreal
I'll take two!! Beautiful job! Thank you for sharing
Considering how you cleared the bandsaw table at 13:09 I'm surprised you have any fingers left.
knife you seem like a well-adjusted individual
OMEGALUL
sorry mom won't happen again
@Joanne Noobs are always surprised and amazed on pros,u just keep being surprised and he will do whatever he like ,cuz he knows exactly what he can do and what can't.
Being wise and experienced means knowing that fewer stuff than you think depends solely on you and your skill. People that work with risk around them and have long and successful careers are almost religious about safety. And even then the most diciplined can have accidents.
Grande bro!!! Finalmente!! Bellissimo!! Ciao a presto
Grazie caro :) :)
Dat der is EYE-talyun Derb old boy.
Beautiful Nakiri! The ball peening really sets it off, thanks for the video.
that DIY rotary sander at 15:30 or so was amazing. never seen that. would've helped so much when sanding a Stratocaster body
Excellent work. I would pay well for that knife!
Beautiful work my friend.
Out of curiosity, how much would something like that cost!
Thank you in advance.
It slices, it dices, it looks amazing too!
the cutting paper part was so satisfying i couldn't hold my self together :}
Wow
Beautiful knife! I love it! I wonder how much it would cost to have one made for me?
That was awesome!! Love the colors in this knife.
Really nice piece of work, and great to see it step by step. Good work.
Fantastic for less than 20 minutes work!
Are you serious? This is at the very least 4 hours of work
@@robertmartin3447sometimes it's hard to recognize a joke 😉
CRAZY beautiful my friend!
Grazie vecchio :')
That handle looks like a professional did it. Like its worth something now sitting on top shelf with a $500.00 price tag on it.
Great work.
LOVE WATCHING THIS MAKING OVER AND OVER!
When you did the paper slicing, i thought "every knife can slice paper, he should slice a tomato" and then you did that aswell! Liked and subscribed!
DAMN!!! Wow bro that knife came out awesome!!!! That first cut you made I was like whoa whoa WHOA wait no. Then i realize that was the other side of the knife blank 😂 keep up the good work brother!!!
ALOHA!!!!
Sheldon Herring-Wexler Same hahahaha
Ahah! :) Thank you alot Sheldon!!
Same XD
Beautiful knife and it's such a versatile shape. I use a sililar shaped knife for pretty much everything.
That is absolutely beautiful. Amazing job.

-Black Beard Projects is a mad man help us,save us~
A work of art, just wonderful!
Thank you!! :)
I used a large rasp/file for mine a while back. My look comes from leaving a little of the rasp and file showing after grinding/sanding. Like the sanding block for the angle, so simple.
i was and am so obsessed with a nakiri knife that i have models of them made from rulers, i made a few at school and i never got caught ;3
The handle was good
15:20 someone must love foamy the squirrel
*ITS JUST A JOKE*
I know
Yooo! What a throwback to an oldschool series.
Grande Mestre Cuteleiro! Parabéns pela bela peça que produziu. 👍
This blade is GORGEOUS!!!!
A very beautiful knife! I love everything about it. One question, the first cut you made it looked like you cut the handle off? Oh, and 1st!!
Thank you my friend :) Yeah I see it looks like that! But I was now :D
Ikr, I thought that too.
glad I wasn't the only one tripping
d c yeah same hear I was like wtf! Had to watch it again then go look at comments to be sure.
I saw that and was like oh no what is you doing then re watched it
Great job. The paper test is always deceiving. Vest knives are the ones that can cut onions and tomatoes with just one hand. ;)
Fabulous work.
That knife is a piece of art.
Questo coltello è veramente stupendo, se non avessi visto il video non avrei mai creduto che fosse stato fatto interamente a mano. Manico bellissimo, lama perfetta!
Please use gloves when gluing with epoxy. My friend worked with epoxy most of his life, he is now allergic to the entire world.
I dont understand
@@fearcase90 You'll understand after it happens to you. Nasty chemicals. They can attack through the skin and lungs. After you become sensitized to them, you'll find
them everywhere.
I was the same with wood dust. I spent years making shit out of wood without the proper dust extraction system and no mask. I started to get red welts on my skin and I would hay fever symptoms when I would do woodwork. By this time I had tens of thousands of dollars of woodwork machinery and hand tools, all were useless to me as I couldn't use them without getting sick. Now I spend my time welding and grinding instead. I do miss the woodwork though. I still have to cut wood every now and then for various reasons, but I have to do it outside with a good respirator on.
Same here only I was born being allergic to the whole world which means my body rejects fruits and vegetables. I have asthma so the allergic reaction swells up my gums causing them to itch really bad and the irritation makes my throat feel raspy and itchy and then everything gets red and inflamed as well as my throat swelling. Doesn’t matter if they’re cooked or not. My stomach issues leave me to eat a very specific diet which mainly needs to consist of fruits and vegetables, yay for me! Due to what I’m supposed to be eating and mixing that with my allergies to everything, they contradict so I’m stuck hating food every time I eat. Most days I don’t even want to eat. My diet is mainly fruits and vegetables supplements thankfully this way of consuming them is okay as well as chicken and red meat. Smelling perfumes and cologne will trigger my allergies to go off really bad so I completely avoid candle shops and anything similar. Bathroom sprays are no different. Having a house too clean will trigger my allergies but having it dirty doesn’t help either, everyday is a contradiction for my body. Forget lawn work and gardening that kills me and usually gets me really sick. I hate spring. I’m sure there’s other things I haven’t came in to contact with that my body is probably hoping I never come into contact with. Sometimes if my skin rubs on any plant my skin breaks out in bumps and starts itching and spreading. Obviously there are some plants nobody should touch and just being around those plants makes me break out as their smell or plant fuckery dust is in the air so I still get a reaction. I feel your friends pain. I’m sure there are things he/she is worse on as their body is different. It is what it is lol.
George Gabel He should have epoxied a pair on him.
My shop teachers years ago would of kicked my ass for having the band saw blade up that high for a short distance. Kids don’t do this at home.
Naw it dont really matter
That's for bigginers baby
Uh Damien... I said kids but adults too. I like my fingers and it’s a risk strange things happen. Get a clue.
It’s all fun and games until someone loses a finger, which I’ve seen happen on a bandsaw..
Beautiful knife! I would buy that one!! Thanks for sharing!
Such a beautiful knife. Love it!!
At the bar:
Me- I'll bet you 3 beers that I can cut 100 slices off the bartenders lemon.
Beautiful! No wet stones for sharpening?
Outstanding! Thank you for sharing this project on the tube.
thank you for no music and not talking. Great job on the knife. :)
