Powerful Turbo XJ650 Build - Satisfying Custom Motorcycle Build

  • Welcome everyone!
    In this video, we turn an old XJ650 into a fire breathing cafe racer! After much tinkering with the jetting, we switched back to the HSR42 and it now runs mint. The needle taper on the HSR42 is much to lean for a 4 cylinder; on Patreon, I made a video explaining step-by-step how I altered the needle taper so that this bike transitions smoothly from the needle to the main circuit.
    There's now over 11 exclusive How-To videos on our Patreon, our most popular video is "How-to Turbocharge your Carbureted Motorcycle From Scratch; Draw-thru, Blow-thru; a Complete Guide". In this video, I break down everything, right down to the nitty gritty details like Fuel Pressure Regulator Selection, Fuel Pump Selection, Pitot tubes, how to hook everything up, basic troubleshooting and more!

    This is my 6th turbo build and my 5th draw-thru build. The reason I like draw-thru setups is the simplicity of the design; even though you give up some driveability and fuel economy, in my mind it's a worthy trade-off. I had a float stick on one of my blow-through builds and it flooded the top end of the motor and left me stranded; I was so mad about that I tore off the turbo setup and sold the bike, lol.

      How much did all the turbo conversion parts for the build cost? The xj700 Maxim is similar to the 650, so I would think the parts & numbers to get it dialed in, would also be similar.

      Seriously, this is the stuff of sorcery and alchemy! I have done basic and intermediate mechanics courses that enjoyable and useful for basic maintenance and at least give me the insight that this here is on another level of Jedi style skill, experience and knowledge. It should be obvious to anyone that there so much more that went in to this build than just in the film - thanks so much for sharing. If I had one constructive comment it would be that I wish you had taken a longer walk around the final finished bike whilst it ticking over so I could get a better look. Whoever gets that bike is very fortunate.

      Thanks! It's weird to think a 35 minute video is considered short, I'll keep that in mind in the next build video. Just don't like putting in excessively long cuts or showing the same thing over and over.

    Near as I can tell, you haven't sent SQUAT to any other shop! Appreciate that much because I live at the end of the road in the 3rd world and make everything from scratch: steel, wood, concrete, sheetmetal, plastic, earth . . . .whatever. Absolutely LOVE to see you cutting, welding, tapping and fabricating it all. Good work! Keep it up!

    • @DoctorMotorcycle
      @DoctorMotorcycle  Před rokem +2

      It's hit and miss with the draw-thru setups; many times you can't hear the turbo, and if you do, it's very faint and only at certain RPMs. This bike is on the more faint side. The bigger CC twin cylinders (like they harley + the virago) whistle pretty loud at all RPM's. Always thought that was odd. Could be the small carb's on the smaller engine's and small air filter dampening the sound too. Cheers!

    Very engaging and addictive build, i did my own turbo conversion on a 2JZ GTE some years back so this was like everything in minature. However a few shop practices i would have been crucified for as an apprentice, fasten the damm vice down 😁. Use clamps to hold sheet down particularly with hole saws, if they bite its chopping your hand off. Hands getting way to close to cutting tools. At one stage it looked like you were using grinding wheels on ally, this can cause the blade to clog, overheat and shatter. And leave the tape for plumbing not oil fittings, use Loctite. On the flip side a good range of skills on show and a very nice looking bike (except the exhaust popping through the seat - what was someone thinking 😁) Great video

    Been watching your videos since you had 1k subscribers. I feel like you’ve always gone the cheap route and do some sketchy stuff on your builds, and I get that as a mechanic myself. It’s not always easy getting the best of the best parts and tools. I really liked this build tho. Love how you got the tank to look that good with rattle cans. And the exhaust is phenomenal. This bike looks so fun to ride and super fast for what is and it sounds REALLY good. Great build sir.

    • @DoctorMotorcycle
      @DoctorMotorcycle  Před rokem +7

      Every Mechanic/Fabricator has done a repair that they wouldn't want to represent their work, and that they definitely wouldn't record and put on the internet. Many of the mistakes I made were out of just being inexperienced, or having such a tight budget I had no choice but to do something ghetto. Like welding exhaust pipe with a flux core welder. Other than working on stuff and doing basic repairs to dirtbikes/cars, I wasn't a motorcycle mechanic/facbricator prior to this channel; I was a CNC machinist.
      We've still just barely scratched the surface. This is still the early days of my work. You ain't seen nuthin yet!

    Looks like you know what you're doing. I have an unhealthy obsession for the 83-84 Yamaha XJ650L Seca Turbos. Heavy, unreliable (for a Yamaha anyway), and love it or hate it styling, but very fun and comfortable. I know this was a Maxim XJ650 in it's previous life, but seeing xj650 turbo caught my eye and I had to check in. Thanks for bringing up some Yamaha Turbo memories.

    How long it took you from day one to the end in days or hours ?
