Managing sesame charcoal/stem rot caused by fungal pathogens can be quite challenging. My suggestion includes the use of two fungicides-Thiophanate-methyl and Fosetyl-Aluminum-along with flooding. Here is a detailed plan incorporating these elements:
1. Understanding the Pathogens
Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina): This fungus thrives in warm, dry conditions and attacks stressed plants, causing root and stem rot.
Stem Rot: Often caused by various fungi including species from Fusarium and Rhizoctonia genera.
2. Flooding
Flooding can help reduce soil-borne fungal inoculum levels. However, it is essential to ensure proper drainage post-flooding to prevent waterlogging, which could harm the sesame plants.
Timing: Flood the fields for 7-10 days before planting to reduce pathogen load. Ensure the soil dries out sufficiently before planting to avoid root diseases.
3. Chemical Treatment
Thiophanate-methyl (800 g): A systemic fungicide that provides protection against a wide range of fungal diseases by inhibiting the development of fungal mycelium.
Fosetyl-Aluminum (500 g): A systemic fungicide effective against oomycete fungi, promoting plant defense mechanisms.
4. Application Plan
Pre-planting
Flooding: Initiate flooding 7-10 days before planting. Drain the field and allow the soil to dry adequately.
Soil Treatment: Mix Thiophanate-methyl and Fosetyl-Aluminum with the soil before planting to reduce the fungal load in the soil.
Seed Treatment
Treat sesame seeds with a fungicide solution containing Thiophanate-methyl before planting to protect against seed and soil-borne pathogens.
Foliar Spray
Apply a foliar spray of Fosetyl-Aluminum at 500 g per hectare at the early stages of plant growth. Repeat the application every 10-14 days, especially during high humidity or rainy periods.
Soil Drench
