First look at the Big Radials Noorduyn Norseman in Microsoft Flight Simulator

- Huge thanks go to Big Radials for sending me a pre-release copy of the Noorduyn Norseman this morning to take a look at! We take if for a quick flight from Friday Harbor on the border of Canada and the USA, and have some fun with it. Wonderful aircraft. Can't wait for it to be released!

Hi Jon, fun to watch. I flew a real one of these for two years, CF-OBE on floats. The livery that you used was from Red Lake, ON. "Chimo" air service. That plane flew out of Ear Falls for many years. A few pointers. When starting a radial engine, it needs to turn over a few times before adding spark to check for hydraulic lock in the bottom cylinder. Start sequence is Prime, wobble, hit the starter, count 3 blades of revolution and hit the mags. If the engine was warm, wobble, starter, pump the throttle once and hit the mags. Flaps were selected by a big crank on the ceiling via a telaflex system. It was indeed a lump of an aeroplane. Small vertical stabilizer, lots of adverse yaw. You had to use alot of rudder in turns. Climb at 95 mph approach at 95 and cruise at about 110. It was very noisy inside but reliable.
Everything from Big Radials has been first rate. They really know how to give a plane character.
Not quite. Most...but not all. Their P-40 Tomahawk is terrible!!!
@@Foxtrot_EW I really like their P-40. It's my favourite warbird after the Corsair and Lighting.
It's not as polished as their newer aircraft though.

Great video, thanks! It's really appreciated that you make these "First look"-videos to guide us in the jungle of new releases and updates. It really helps me to decide what I should spend my money on for this great hobby. I'm surely gonna get this plane and take it for revival rides along the US CAM air mail routes of the 1930's.

Such a great plane and the detail is wonderful. I have been flying around in Africa. Most of the airfields I am encountering are dirt and grass. I will send you some names. Flying there is like flying through a Monet!

It seems that it is already available from their website, but probably coming soon to the marketplace.

Lots of private airstrips in the San Juan Islands which aren't on the MSFS World Map but can be seen on the map that comes with LittleNavMap. A great training ground for bush flying. I once spent a week flying in and out of one of them under the mistaken impression it was Friday Harbor West!
so how do you use these airstrips if they are not in msfs ?
@@saren6538 You can't start from them but you can land then take off just fine. There's even one that in satellite imagery clearly has a hut built in the middle of it - but in the sim it's just a white patch on the ground so it doesn't get in the way!🤷♂️
Very nice vid. Love the plane, sounds very nice and it seems to fly as the real one. While everybody loves the CRT I don't like it at all, using an internal element of a plane for something that you wouldn't do in the real aircraft makes no sense. A CRT to monitor engine or a radar or anything that would be used in the real plane would be amazing. For settings I prefer a tablet or menu or anything that is not a real element of the cockpit.

A problem is that you cannot read the dials when flying i daylight. The last update did not improve anyting.
You're videos are very nice and you explain things very well. What turns me off of some of these planes is when there's no shaking or vibrating when engine gets going. Flying Iron and JP Logistics do a really good job of this. Also... Do you use FS Realistic ?
I have FSRealistic, but I typically don't use it for first look videos.
Thank you so much for this detailed review. I definitely wanted to skip this one as it's so similar to the Beaver but less good-looking in my eyes. But after hearing the sound set in your video, I'm afraid I have to get yet another STOL taildragger for my hangar 🤦🏼 It just sounds too good to not buy it.

Rather reminiscent of the DeHavillan Beaver, eh?! The point is, am I getting anything different if I get this as well?! The sound is great, though.
They are very, very similar. I would argue the inside of the Beaver is better.
@@jonbeckett Thanks for that heads up, Jon. I’ll stick to the Beaver then cos like you mentioned about your hanger I’m having quite a build up of these GAs littering my community folder. And you’re to blame for quite a number of those. Haha!! Have to draw a line somewhere, haven’t I?
Well the good news is the airplane has quite benign, wings level stall characteristics as long as you keep the slip indicator ball centered in the race at stall entry. Hmmm. Slip indicator. Where is the slip indicator in this digital copy of the real thing? Who would build a light aircraft without a slip indicator?
You would be surprised which instruments are commonly missing in aircraft of this era. I'm always reminded of the flight Chuck Yeager did in the F-15E (it's on CZcams - you can look it up) - while the pilot briefed him on the various instruments in the back seat, Chuck started laughing and pointed at the angle-of-attack meter - with words to the effect of "if you need an angle of attack meter, you shouldn't be flying an aircraft in the first place" :)

I find that the weathering and aging of the textures is a bit inconsistent from the outside to the inside and that other developers are quite a bit better at it. But hey, I still like it...

Everything works on my version but the nav for some reason.
Despite it being a rather interesting aircraft I will not be purchasing it and not because of these rather good reviews but more like I have enough planes atm.
Why not show a real aircraft? There are plenty of Norsmans around! Computer bullshit!
