- How did watering my plants turn into a 3-5 business day project?
I am 100% convinced I need to downsize my collection so I can maintain this hobby in a joyful, manageable state.
But one thing I never mind propagating is ALOCASIA CORMS. Technically, corms are underground plant stems, but you can pluck them and grow them into brand new plants. Corms that come from variegated alocasias don't necessarily turn into variegated plants (much like how children are not guaranteed to look like clones of their parents).
If you want to level up your plant parenthood game, try propagating from corms! You can propagate them in water, moss, perlite, LECA, etc.. but my go-to substrate has always been aquatic soil because it's chock full of nutrients and I've had a 100% success rate with them. The key is to make sure whatever substrate you use is consistently moist and that you give the corm TIME. I've had corms root as quickly as a few days to as long as a few MONTHS.
Have you ever tried growing plants from corms? What's been your experience?
STAY TUNED FOR PART 3 (I promise it's the last part of this series). I'll be going over CALATHEAS!

After watching part one of this video and I immediately purchased the 5 gallon bottle and water pump and it definitely is a game changer. Thank you so much for that tip! FYI I’m 5’0 ft too, good things do come in small packages 😂❤.
Hahaha high five to a fellow 5” tall club! And omg the jug is such a game changer 🫶
Omg 5’ not 5” hahaha
You have become my fave plant CZcamsr! All of your videos put a smile on my face. ❤
Haha wow! Thank you!
Omg, Michelle. I love these long form vids! Keep up the good work!
Thank you, June!!!
I love all of this - thank you for sharing your life with us!
Thanks for watching!
I'm loving these long form videos, and I always wondered how you cared for all your plants. Now I am starting to figure it out 😂
Haha takes forever
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow but the fact that you can get so much done proves how amazing you are.
This was so fun to watch before going to work, boosted my mood for the day 😁 the corms look so cozy somehow 😂 excited to see their journey! ✨🪴
ahha they are definitely cozy - especially on top of a heat mat. They're warmer than I am at the moment lol
You have definitely changed my plant journey. Such a positive. Love all your videos!
that is so wonderful to hear. Thank you!
clear pots were a game changer for me
Right?! Why aren’t these the default!
Aaaahhhh, my happy content! 🪴 🌱
🫶
Idk why midnight always feels like the best time to do plant chores
Because it’s peaceful 😂
Love this - a day in the life of a working plant parent...and how you fit it all in.
I need like 20 more hours in the day haha
I love your videos and shorts. Very entertaining and I always learn something. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much for the feedback! 🫶
I'm glad you're not perturbed by these haters. Your content is so good 🪴
Thank you! 🥰
Love seeing these!
haha thanks!
Would love to see your Hoyas.. your videos are so fun.
Haha I actually don’t have too many Hoyas! Maybe I’ll rearrange one of my cabinets to be a Hoya cabinet. You got my wheels turning!
This is super great...thank you.
You're very welcome!
I use a chop stick, too! ☺️
Oh HEEEY 🥢
Love to see it! All of your plants are soo beautiful. And I love that you're not afraid to chop off the dead stuff or to prop. I found a LOT of corns in one of my alocasias I killed (for transport reasons lol.) I find alocasias to be really resilient plants. Love them!
Finding corms is the best insurance policy :)
Open CZcams everyday just to check whether part 3 is released! Can’t wait to see the repotting part
GOAL IS TOMORROW!!!! if not, Friday for surreeeeeeeee
Loveeee your content.
Thank yooooou!
Ohh my a new video!!!
hahah finally right? Editing takes me foreeeeeever, but Part 3 is ready soon!
Yeah, I've always had a couple of plants hanging on for dear life! In spring 2019 I went crazy and bought easily 100 for my small office, lots of ferns and calatheas, and I live in the Pacific Northwest rainforest. I literally had 1,000 gnats flying around (up into my brain, lol!) My poor husband who had none kept wondering WTH? ;) So, I started bottom watering and spraying the top soil with straight hydrogen peroxide. Quickly went down to 0 and that's still my method today, now 1 gnat a year. So, if I see the slightest ting of gray - I spray!
Love this!!! 🙌
Lol I watched this and immediately gained a burst of energy to peel and plant two corms😂 what have you done to me Michelle???
CORM PARTY
I love watching these, Michelle!! Makes me feel like we live closer to each other haha! -Jenn ♥️
THAT WOULD BE A DREAM JENN.
Thank you for the video 😀🇨🇦
I’m glad you like!
Haha Can’t wait for part 3! I did not buy anything this time thank goodness. I just never get over how weird plants are. My black velvet and my bambino hated being in my greenhouse. But they root really well in it.
Plants have such diva personalities sometimes haha
100+ plants to water = You causally getting in your steps
You are so right!
You're only 5 feet tall, I would have never guessed. It makes a lot more sense why you were fighting with the water jug now lool.
LOL I have been this height since 6th grade basically 🤣
LOL! Yada Yada's comment to you fits her name.
😂😂😂😂
I saw part 1, saw a compressable 3-5 gallon water bottle with dispenser attached at Daiso the other day, and said "sold!". 😅 I blame (and thank) you for that!
daiso is amazing tho! hahahaha
Totally random…have you had any luck finding clear pots bigger than one gallon? Also, I had a decorative pot I couldn’t find a nursery pot for and you inspired me to get creative and my takeout soup container fits it perfectly! 😂 Really enjoying your longer videos. Cheers from a fellow 5 footer. Thank you!
Hi! I've only seen 11" as the largest clear pot I could personally find (bit.ly/47V6jLH Code: MICHELLE15). Anything bigger than that, I just go to big box stores and get the big black containers. Thanks for watching!
Michelle!!You answered me!!Noone has ever answered me(others who I subscribe to)...Thank you!!
I am NOT ON FACEBOOK!!Can you believe??But that is nice of you!
hahaha
I love watching your videos-you are so funny and creative with all your added effects...@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow
Happy to take an envelope with a corm or two! 🙋🏿♀️ I have a centerpiece with all alocasias and I don't have a frydeck or a zebrina ijs lol
Hah you know I’ll likely give these away to my Facebook subscriber group for whoever wants em once they root!
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow darn. I'm not on fb.
Everytime I do the chopsticktest I get nervous. Take the Strelitzia for example. Not watered for 2 weeks and still wet. And I am like: Maybe it is just how my soil mix work. And it never wants to be fully dry... aaaah. And here I am watering again and praying for no rootrot. 😢
Btw you are doing everything right with your home. So gorgeous 😊
It's likely your soil composition that is retaining a lot of moisture, but if what you're doing works, then keep doing it! Thanks for watching :)
❤❤❤
Thank you!
I need to start getting some type of watering configuration for my moss poles…
How do you water now??
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow tattoo squirt bottle for like 3 mins 😐
Another great video! I need the name of the stratum substitute please.
It’s linked in the description with a discount code! It’s called Solum
I will buy a frydek from you! I only found one decent place online and it has a very long journey so makes me nervous..
I will be selling soon!
good because the ones I bought already look like they might not make it. Maybe cause one of them is growing a new leaf but both of them came with 4 leaves and now each only have 1-2. I tried grow light, regular light, changing soil and now I just ordered Leca. My last hope at this point. @@ohtheplacesyoullgrow
Hmmmm have you tried increasing the humidity?
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow yes. It’s gotten way worse. Pretty much your new video about how you rotted your frydek. Same thing right now. I have a little stub. And then a plan with a new leaf but idk if I should keep it in leca or put in water.
When i'm too tired i do the deed the next day
👍👍👍
I wonder what it’s like taking care of a bird of paradise 🤔
They kinda look like peace lily leaves in my opinion 😂
I have a huge one! Easy going.
Hi Michelle..do you sell plants??I would love a Frydek!!
I will likely give them away to whoever wants in my Facebook subscriber group once they root and pop a leaf!
how do you know which plants produce corms?
Alocasias and colocasias do!
thank you!
How do you just water the moss? Doesn’t the water drain into the soil?
Dry moss is hydrophobic. I water the top of the moss pole a little bit, if it drains too fast then I give it a break and move on to the next pole and come back to it.
Once the top of the moss pole is hydrated, then capillary action absorbs the water down slowly.
You can see the moss when it's wet and remove the water once it reaches the bottom
The little drippy tool i have (www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJJRBZBP?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzohthepla-20&creativeASIN=B0BJJRBZBP&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.V63KHA3E7530&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin) drips it super slow so that it will slowly saturate from the top to the bottom. I check back in about 20 minutes to see how much it's saturated down the pole. I will remove before it reaches soil level. I've also watered my moss poles long enough now to know how much water i need to keep in the water bottle.
So I think all my corms are upside down 🤦🏼♂️
lol I have some growing upside down too. Sometimes it’s really hard to tell!!!
Hey i luvvv all your videos !!! I noticed your always barefoot in most of your videos. Im the exact same way when im around my plants ! I frel it makes u feel more connected to your plants.
Is hat the same reason ur barefoot in alot of your videos too? :)
HAHHAA a lot of people mention that but I’m just barefoot when I’m indoors in general 😂
My alocasia is dying a slow death, and I don’t know what to do. I think I’m a m¥rderer!
Oh no!!! Check for corms!
Girl theres no way anyone lives in that house. Is this a youtube sponsers tv show?
I don’t get it. Why would no one live here?!?
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow so is that a yes? Nothing against you. The channel is great. Js. There's no way
Yes…it’s literally my house!
