    Just got w212 E220 estate for £4k @ 109k fully serviced. Seen a few bad ones, this was bang on the money.
    Sold my w211 & got the w212 than the w213. Simply the w212 was better to drive over rough roads & more solid build quality.

    I have had my 2009 E350 CDI for 2 and a half years now and was a little worried at first buying early in the production life. It has just gone over 275,000 miles, I bought privately, one owner with 98,000 miles and has been incredibly reliable over the last 175,000, it always amazes me! In that time I have replaced the alternator, a battery, 2 springs, 2 bushes, EGR valve, engine mounts and injector seals, that's about it in 275,000 miles! (apparat from the usual disks and pads etc). I have complete service records from the previous owner and nothing major was changed under his ownership, I would have another in a heartbeat!
    I have just bought a 2007 Mondeo with 225,000 miles for my other business (insurance reasons :-( ) and the quality difference is ridiculous!

    Longer comment: The reliability for E-class overall (whether Wagon or Sedan) has been very good (US buyers can check Consumer Reports ratings). The build quality (body, trim, interior) is excellent. I am always amazed when I see a 10 year old Benz with 100k miles and the paint looks great, the interior looks fresh. The driver's seat even still has the same support it did when new.
    As someone who's owned a C-class wagon (W203) I wasn't particularly enthralled when I test drove a 2012 E350 wagon. The wagon was certainly comfortable enough, but the handling was more vague, it felt large and heavy overall. Acceleration felt somewhat labored as the 3.5L V6 is trying to move 4200 lbs of weight. Ditto for braking when you need to stop 4200 lbs of weight. The shifts in the automatic transmission are smooth but not firm, and I've always felt that MB automatics lack crispness and seem to rob power and hurt fuel economy. The E-class wagon can handle curves, although a fair amount of body roll and not a lot of road feel or steering feedback. There is really quite a bit of difference between the C-class and E-class, with the C-class wagon driving much more like a sport sedan. One thing I didn't like was the silly shift lever on the steering column, I always prefer the real shifter on the center console. Overall the E-class wagon felt large, more like I was driving a Lincoln Town Car or Cadillac and it was more size and space than I needed. If you can fit all your gear into the C-class wagon, it's a more engaging car to drive!

    • @glasser2819
      @glasser2819 Před 4 lety +1

      the shifting is now all done by wire, no direct cable and rod involved from a center console position. True to form, the shifting module is weak and prone to premature failure if you park over hills (parking claws disengage)

    2005 W211 (E220 CDI), it has 327553km currently, it hasn't had any problems in the last 10 years our family has owned it, apart from a air conditioning compressor that blew out, amazingly it was still on the original compressor!
    ANY car can be reliable (well not really any but most) if you maintain it well, and don't thrash it. Ours is loved and well taken care of, and so it was by the previous owner.
    The only way you can actually tell it has so many km's is either looking at some interior bits, like the gear knob and driver seat, which are sort of worn out.

But I do not want to change our healthcare system, social system if you lose your job or home etc. No sir, we Dutch are some awkward people but there are almost none other countries on this planet I want to change with. I drive Volvo V70's for about 10 years now, great cars, comfy and better to maintainan than a Benz, well in the Netherlands at least.... Lot of Volvo's and lot of parts.... Benz E-class will be an expensive story here :(

    Haha, I just realised that you were the guy who reviewed the W204 before I was buying my first one, a C180K five years ago. I wanted one of these W212s since then, but I made some poor choices and choices that delayed my search (C200 CDI, 190E, Subaru Terrible Outback, E320CDI and Alfa 147). Now I decided to get one of these and guess whose review I am watching! Until this review, I didn’t like the blue colour, just like I didn’t like the colour of your 204, but again, the colour is growing on me. To be fair, once you have a proper E class estate (not necessarily the 220), it’s difficult to move on and chose anything other. I had an R107 before and other Mercedes cars and vans, but nothing compares to a large, utilitarian Mercedes. I look forward to checking out your Porsche reviews in a few years, I would quite like a gen 2 996 or a cheap 997.

    It has still cost me repair money though. SAM module fail £1,000.00 and a rotten rear brake pipe which MBUK wanted £1,000.00 to fix as they said you had to remove the rear axel. Obvious not as an MB specialist did it for £225.00.

The 212 is like driving your living room couch on the comfort level. Quiet, responsive and powerful. The 211 seems to allow more road feel and shift control but is not as quiet as the 212. Paddle shifting on the 212 is not as responsive as the 211 but that might be due to the fact of a 5 speed (211) vs 7 speed (212). What do you think. Take the advice and review maintenance history and have independent inspection before you buy!

      My E350 had a similar problem. Two sensors on rear suspension. Connected by cheap 10 dollar plastic links. One failed, and brought a 22 grand car to its knees. Literally.

      @alsatch_  Před 5 lety +1

      Alan B'Stard M P I suppose it all depends on how well it has been looked after. I don’t expect all high mile mercs to be in this good condition, but if looked after properly there is no reason why it can go for half a million or more

    • @MrRocktuga
      @MrRocktuga Před 5 lety +1

      You won’t get the same reliability out of a Mercedes like this (or even the previous w211 chassis) that you get on a Toyota!
      On the other hand, you will never get the same handling characteristics and interior environment on a Toyota like you get on a Mercedes.
      If you know a decent mechanic (and where to buy parts), you need to expect more “maintenance” than you get on a Camry over the years, but it doesn’t have to be any horror show.
      But these cars are usually more complex, and I,m not talking just about electronics.
      Even things like the suspension or “simple” motor mounts are made to filter those elements from the cabin, and not necessarily to last as long as they could.
      So you may easily end up replacing motor mounts earlier than on a Toyota (and many other cars), which is not as expensive as one may think, but it’s still a kind of a regular maintenance item.
      Only each individual can decide which of these philosophies are more desirables. 😉
