  • In this video Darren Magee discussed the nine criteria set out in DSM 5 to diagnose Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). At least five of the criteria must be considered to be inflexible, pervasive, long standing and lead to significant distress and impairment.
Part of the Cluster B group of personalities, it is a mental health condition often diagnosed with cocurring disorders such an anxiety disorder or an eating disorder.
Also looking at symptoms such as difficulty regulating emotion, unstable relationships and being in a state of high alert

The videos I make are topics suggested by you the viewer. Feel free to suggest any mental health or psychology subjects you'd like me to cover in future videos. Just a reminder though, these videos are not a substitute for support from a mental health professional.

The mood swing thing is one of the reasons I think I have this. I had an extreme emotional reaction to an intense discussion with what I now discovered is what is referred to as my "favourite person" and I was so overwhelmed, I had massive anxiety at work and became dizzy.. I was in this mood for hours, trying to distract myself with music and podcasts. I was happy and chipper later on, and then all of a sudden I spiralled into depression and suicidal thoughts. I was working and had to interact with people in a professional manner during all of this and it was so distressing to have to do that while feeling that way.

Lost my wonderful wife of 40 years, and finally got up the courage to meet a new lady. I ran into a lady that I believed was wonderful, at church, no less. I was the total center of her attention for 6 months... But then, she just parted. She said she moving on and so should I. No reason or even talk. Devastating. She made me love her and then just split the scene. I got looking here online for an explanation. I believe she ticks off all 9 traits of the quiet BPD. What did I learn ? Ask a lot of questions and go slow for a year and a half.. She was a wonderful person. Too bad she didn't get a grip on her troubles when she was younger.

Hey Darren, I am trying to help a friend but I don't know what to do as I am exhausted. Exhaustion is associated with running a marathon or climbing a mountain but my exhaustion is real. How do I explain to my friend that they are a living nightmare when they have no concept of this phrase. How do I help them? xx
Ps is it beyond my capability as a reasonably sane person? I am not on social media but got a 'boohoo' from some arsehole re my comments to you. Really don't need it. Why are there people out there who troll through any site in order to make an unjustifiable comment? It isn't a comment actually: rather a vile noise. It makes me never want to comment again.

I just discovered your channel. Thank you so much for explaining these conditions so well! I checked to see if you have any videos on the various types of BPD but I don’t see any. Will you be covering those at some point? I’ve not been diagnosed with it professionally as I was told by a former therapist that he didn’t like to use labels. I don’t know if that’s the case with all in the mental health community. Personally, I like having a diagnosis as a starting point. Thanks so much. I really enjoy your analysis.

Oh boy is dating someone with undiagnosed BPD fun… and watching your Narcissism videos has made we wonder if they also have some narcissistic tendencies. 😅 Any advice on how to handle someone with BPD? I’ve found that it’s just about impossible to *not* trigger them as the trigger can be so minuscule at times.

Not enough emphasis is made about how destructive the borderline is to their children or a spouse. The borderline knows how to act one way in public and another way in private, therefore they can control their behavior. Instead they make themselves the victim and those close around them are punished. I don't believe they feel shame since they repeat destructive behaviors and never admit they are wrong. Those close to the borderline are held hostage by the borderline's ability to exploit the need for resolution and obligation to the borderline.
This obligation is not voluntary but coerced after years of conditioning.

@@DarrenFMagee The cluster B personalities often present as a set of co-morbid personality disorders, say, narcissism and BDP, or narcissism and anti-social personality, or any number of combinations of behavioral disorders.
I'm familiar with a situation in which a person deliberately opens doors you've closed, intentionally messes up a room you've cleaned, knowingly turns off a light you've just turned on, and does these things with a sardonic smile.
And on top of this, the person presents full-blown NPD with the cheating, lying, entitlement, and lack of empathy and other related patterns. If that’s not enough there’s the histrionic traits of an overwhelming desire to be noticed.
What we are doing on some of these channels is great, but the dizzying array of types and admixtures of dysregulated personalities seems to be expanding with each passing day.
If only we could find a way to detect such conditions instantly to avoid the great harm such people are doing to the “normal” people around them and society at large. Just look at how lying has become normalized in so many parts of the world.

go off-script and discuss the original sin, I mean our knowhow inside psychology is so great we 'do not' belive in some original sin, but the topic then; what is it, invite a minister, or anything just blast yourselves out, just an idea...(smileys) My theory then might be spelled; the abuse of paretns esp. as concerns narcs is perhaps the closest we come to this outmoded doctrine...
