You my friend are a god send for new drivers. The industry needs more like you
Thanks mate appreciate it.
just done a job in scotland, not got much reversing experience, the 2 people banking me in we're both seasoned drivers, had to back into a warehouse, through a door with 3 inch room at either side, on my blindside, in a tight car park. the younger one was getting frustrated, throwing his arms about at me, the older guy told me to tell the younger guy to go fuck himself and take all the time i needed 😂 sometimes just need to take a deep breath and get out and take another look at things. great video again btw mate👍
We was all new at some point mate, it uses to take me 10 shunts to get on a bay at some point. So yeah f#ck him. Take your time and get it done safe.
I start work on the artics after having my licence for nearly 4 years finally taking the leap and this reversing is one thing that has held me back from moving from the class 2's wish me luck and thanks for the video I'll remember your wise words
Good luck mate hope it helps you out!
Less is more and don't rush is definitely great advice, when I started 6 months ago I was boogiewoogieing all over the place. Now I'm starting to get my head around it
Thats it mate, i remember when i started i was all over the place 😅
Have been driving for 6 months now & have a baby urban trailer. It has been a challenge but today after watching this at the weekend I got straight on my tricky bay without a shunt. Whole time I was reversing I was saying "less is more! “. Thank you great advice. 😍
Thats awesome, im glad it helped you! 😊
What are you doing city driving?
Thats amazing 👏
Im so glad it helped, comments like this that make the effort i put into this channel worth while, so i reLky appreciate it 👌
I drive from Glasgow to Oban & Fort William. Scenery is amazing😋
That sounds nice, bit better than down here for sure haha
Remember if you find yourself in an urban rear steer. you will need even less steering input. And if you lose it, start again if you don't have the room to straighten up. Which you probably wont if your in an urban!
Thanks for this video and for the practical way that you explain the reverse in a Class 1. I am enjoying all your videos.
Cheers fella, are you a new driver yourself or are you looking at getting into trucking?
I felt you could of used a few more camera angles maybe but the information was spot on!
New driver passing my Class 1 6 months ago and now working for an agency, so I do not get to drive Class 1 often, and when I do it is the manoeuvring that stresses me. However, I must say that I have found everyone helpful and willing to offer advice, which is all gratefully received. Watching your CZcams channel over the last year has also been very helpful from making the decision to try HGV driving through to information on how to practically carry it out. It is becoming a bit easier but I have a long way to go to become comfortable with the responsibility of driving a HGV. Once again thanks for all your assistance and keep the videos coming.@@truckitprayle
Im also enjoying all your videos mate keep up the good work!
thanks i will bare that in mind for the next video mate.
These tips help a lot had driving assessment today and smashed the bay park, less is defo more and head out of the window makes it loads easier
Brilliant glad it helped you out mate 👍 😀
Great tips there mAte im looking at doing my test soon, and this is just the kind of video i was looking for!
Thanks.
You're welcome matey, when are you thinking about doing it?
there is plenty more videos on my channel with advice and tips if it helps.
Appreciate the support!
Im gona get my test booked in the new year mate, how long have you been trucking?
And thanks i have subscribed and will check them out.
Cheers fella, well make sure you let me know how you get on with it all and if theres anything you need me to cover in a video just let me know and i will do my best to make it for you.
Will do mate, im kinda excited for it but also very nervous at the same time, could you do a video about doing your practical test, like what to expect and such?
its only natural my friend im sure you will do great!
Great video! I recently passed my HGV license. Had my first agency job yesterday, after waiting for 3weeks. I was nervous as shit, more so because of reversing, But all in all everything went well. Thanks for the tips, and remember guys less is more haha
Thank you, thought Id do a bit of research a head of time to hoepfully help me when I do go for some lessons!
Good luck!
When I started driving class 1 I often tried to get more reversing practice. For example when was coming back to yard I was picking spots between 2 trailers, then another one, then another one with less space in front. Another step was picking spots between 2 lorrys on truck stops. Focus on what was correct and what was wrong. That will help in future. Obviously do not rush. If not sure go outside and look. It's better to get outside 5 times than hit another truck 1 time. Nothing wrong with couple of shunts. As I can see 8/10 drivers take one or more shunts even when there's plenty of space.
Thats right mate even to this day i will always take another shunt if i feel it's nessasary, what did you find the hatdest part when you passed reversing or something else?
@@truckitprayle Switching between different types of trailer. You figured out how to reverse standard 3-axle trailer then you get 2-axle, double-decker or LST. 30ft urban trailer was always the worst one.
Yeah 💯 i get that i had a steer axle once it totally threw me off for a day or two.. haha
I took up to 15 attempts reversing on to a bay and was more worried about that forgot to open doors...😂..then i was doing a walking floor trailer where there's sensors and you need to be at the right speed dead straight and the trail bar went up a small ramp to keep her level when loading 96 x 200 litres barrels of whiskey..only been driving 3 months again about 10 shunts..once loaded drove it 45 mins to warehouse on the most narrowest twisting road here in Ireland...I now do motorway tankers and as someone else said Don't go for the easy parking spot i always back between two tankers...in the 2.5 yrs i say did it in 1 about 3 times..take as many as you need...take your time ...if in doubt get out even 10 times...as pointed out small steering movements...found looking out window really F%%ked me up at first and of course steering the opposite way to move trailer...the way i was taught is place your hands at the bottom of steering wheel lift your right hand/left hand will go in that direction...I was asked the other day by a 4 day old driver how long it takes i said 6 months but your still learning even if driving 30 years...Best of luck to all.
Yeah i been doing it coming up 7 years now and i have my good and bad days still.
Great video mate. I've got nearly 2 years under my belt now and I agree reversing is hard when you're new. Sometimes it's still tricky for me at times. The oversteering is a biggy, I was guilty of that. Same with feeling pressured and the moment you begin to get rattled it's going to get a thousand times worse. I totally agree with slower is better, forget anyone else (traffic etc), always remember GOAL (get out and look), and never be afraid to ask someone to watch you back. One thing I used to do was go into work half an hour early so I could stop at a quiet industrial estate on the way to my trailer swap and practice a few reverses around corners each night when nobody is around. If you can find a quiet spot just do it guys, it's all about practice :)
Thanks mate, it's one of those things even after 6 years i have my bad days and good days, but yes i would definitely recommend practicing in your spare time if you have the opportunity.
What kind of work do you do?
@@truckitprayle I'm on agency doing trunking, trailer swaps, often deliveries with a reload fairly close by. Mostly curtainsiders. Done flatbeds too, fridge loads, double decks, and a few containers out of Port Of Blyth. Hopefully I'll be starting my own channel in the new year, Trucker Murdock, with the idea to try give an insight for the newer drivers (I'm nearly 2 years into it).
Go for it mate, it keeps the job interesting 👍
Great video mate, thanks!
Thanks mate appreciate it.
Anything else you would like to see explained?
Best tip is Practice. Hit a lot of things you will learn fast.
I've hit 3 parked cars in two months. 😢I've think I got it now. Don't rush, jump out and look. Mirrors
@@bbc20231 did you get fired?
@mmmbbop9351 no . Just given advice and driving assessment
@@bbc20231 nice. Have been class 2 for two years but have got a class 1 assessment on Monday for DHL. Have heard they take no prisoners.
Thanks that was spot on reverse
During my lessons ( years ago ! ) the instructor was a great driver but didn't explain and guess what I failed first time on the reverse. I went back for 1/2 a day the following week and it was a different guy. He got me set up then to start reversing " 1/4 turn of the steering wheel .stop .Where are you're back wheels ?" Move back slowly and repeat each time with an an occasional GOAL . in summary . Small movements of the wheel . " is it going where you want it to ?. Passed next test. Never forgot it .
Yeah my instructor was like your second very good at the minor details and explaining how its not a rush and small turns and slow moving is the best way.
How are you finding it now a year on?
We have regular runs and I find I'm better if i have to go to a new place . Think I concentrate more. Easy to make a mistake if it's comfortable and familiar.@@truckitprayle
Yeah sometimes it's to easy to become complacent i always prefer new places, i like a challenge now though.
Awesome, My instructor didnt understand that some people learn by watching other people. He was bamboozled when i asked him to do it so i could watch. "but your paying me to drive it for you!?" ...you should consider being a instructor, you defo have the raporrt =)
Yeah everyone has a different way of learning, but i guess sone people don't get that.. best of luck mate.
Sometimes it's the only way....
Usually the saying, "less talking, more listening, you might learn something", comes into play
But sometimes no one is telling you anything. All you can do, is observe and try to mull it over and assess what you can garner, from what you saw
Respect!!!
Another great video. Just to add regarding employers claiming the cost of any damage from the employee. In the UK, this can only be done if there is a contract in place which expressly states how much deductions can be made for damage or to cover the cost of the insurance excess and it must be signed by both parties. Without such a contract, any deduction from your pay for damage would be unlawful but you are right, many employers still do it without agreement. If there was such a contract in place, there is nothing preventing the employee from having their own insurance policy in place to cover any excess claim by the employer. Here in Oz, such a practice is completely unlawful and I was actually in court myself a couple of years ago on a different employment matter and listening to the other cases before mine. In less than 5 minutes, the Judge heard and upheld a claim by an employee for unlawful deductions from his pay for vehicle damage. The Judge turned to the respondent (the employer), and advised him that if they are employed by the business then in good and in bad, this has to be a cost covered by the business and is what you have insurance for including paying extra for a lower excess.
Thats really interesting i had it happen to me a few years back but i had signed an agreement so there wasn't much i could do about it.
I think its crafty as being a sriver you are bound to have a dink now and then being on the road as much as we are.
Had a Boss at interview 8 yrs ago to sign that I would pay 1st £2500 of damage.Told me he'd used Romanians an they had doubled his insurance.I said so you employed monkeys in the hope you'd make big bucks an it's come back an bitten you and you want me to pay for your greed. He then got personal with insults. But stopped him dead by saying I'm a local boy ( Tilbury) last thing you want to see is me at 05.00 with a bar in my hands when you open them gates.Shut his mouth then
Thank you 👍👍
Thank you too
Reverse parking is slightly easier but reversing in a bendy road with cars parked is a big challenge
Oh yeah 💯 mate, luckily those situations are few and far between.
Although would be good for a video. Haha
thats a awesome video that will help alot of people mate 😎
I hope so do ypu think its informative enough though?
Let’s goooooo
and we are live!
I just started driving an Hgv truck..but,its a very daunting task for me but,I believed I can do it
Yeah you will be fine mate with a little bit of practice 👍
I'm going back to it next month, shitting it a bit now I've got a start date sorted. Had 6 month a couple of years ago and still wasn't the best at it, got better toward the end but probs be like new driver again now.
I was turning that wheel full lock back and forth at the start red faced and sweating more than Gary glitter near a school but when it clicks it's easy just takes practice
Good timing this video.
Been out on my own for the first time this week in a Class 1 for a few ad hoc days. Think i got worse at reversing as the week went on 😂 There's so many more things to consider compared to a rigid - headboard, tractor unit, less visibility etc. You need eyes everywhere
Will be another few months before I'm back in one again and it'll be like starting over!
It's not easy mate but will all come in time, what did you find was the most helpful part of the video?
Hi mate I hope you're well 🙏🏻 I have just shared this vlog with a new driver. She has only been class 1 for 3 weeks ( car to truck ) I helped her a lot at the hub we deliver to but she still needs time so I sent her this to help her see it from a different view 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks mate i appreciate that and i hope it helps her out, tell her to subscribe because i will be doing alot more videos like this for new passes! 👍
@@truckitprayle she has just got back to me now so I've asked her to hit the sub button 👍🏻. I hope you are well and looking forward to the festive season 👍🏻 keep up the good work 👍
thanks mate, im all good.. as ready as i will ever be i guess trying to sort something special for the christmas break for content.
i was thinking of doing some deliveries as the grinch... what do you think? haha
@@truckitprayle yeah definitely mate that would be a laugh 🤣 Go for it 😂
@@truckitprayle it will be funny mate Christmas spirit that's what it's all about 👍🏻. I will be restarting my vlogs around new year I have had to kind pay Bill ect but now I have enough to get a better GoPro and a decent iPad so I will be back on very soon 👍🏻👍🏻
Great tips mate . Starting training soon . Only thing that worries me is judging how long the trailer is but i assume that comes with time .
Yeah mate ypu get used to it really quick after hitting a few pallets over.. 😅
Nah im only joking its pretty easy mate.
Good one.
Thanks 👍
Thanks mate!!!
You're welcome mate hope it helped!
I am where you were, its slow improving, these videos help.
How long you been at it?
And im glad they help mate 👍
Just got my first class 1 job was totally honest with the company and they gave me a day with an instructor to practise reversing before I start doing drops.
Well done mate, best of luck hope it works out for you 👍
What kind of work is it?
@@truckitprayle Mostly trunking, sometimes supermarkets so it should be easy stuff.
Thats how i learnt doing trunking, definitely one of the best ways. Good luck!
@@truckitprayle yep its easy just going to RDCs and making the odd collection as time goes on I'm sure I'll progress to more challenging stuff, takes 2 minutes or less to get on a bay so getting decent at the reversing with time. So far loving it before this I was did 3 months of class 2 multi drop hell and 2 years of bus driving and can honestly say this is the best out of the lot. I'd never go back to class 2 multi drop ever again I actually earned nearly 5k a year more in that but its not worth it if you hate it.
Reversing is nightmare for new passed driver .!!! Thanks for this video it’s help 😊
Glad to help mate, are you a new pass?
@@truckitprayle yes mate it’s been 1 month I get lost when it’s come to park between two trailer in tight spaces
It will come in time with practice, when you get back to the yard maybe and spend half an hour practicing.
Just remember everyone was where you are at some point.
@@truckitprayle yes Bro ur video help me alots make more videos on reversing with step by step it will help so many new drivers
Cheers brother appreciate it , share it about if you know anyone else it will help 👍
Good advise there
Cheers mate 👍
Put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Right to go right. Left to go left.
Great advice, less is definitely more, look out the window remember your legally allowed to take your seatbelt off when reversing, if in doubt get out and look and lastly don’t be c*** take a shunt…
Thank you very very much !!! Muchas gracias !!! 🙃
You're welcome mate 👍
Might have missed it but do you have any advice on reversing into like an angled bay? Was doing curtains for Nissan and struggled hard with these bags
What do you mean mate?
I start my training this Thursday I'm terrified
Don't be worried maye you will be fine just take your time.
Best of luck!
Damaging your lorry or worse, hit someone...good vid mate
Great video mate! Got under two years experience and it’s only in the last six months or so that I’m getting to grips with it. I’m in my 50s, and it’s probably harder at my age to learn something new. Like you say, less is more and get your head out of the window, especially if you got mirror cams lol
It takes a while fella but we alm get there eventually, how do you find those mirror cams?
I must say im not a fan of the idea of them why fix something thats not broken?
@@truckitprayle Not too bad on a dry day. When it’s dark and raining totally useless and in my opinion dangerous. Also crap for reversing. Prefer conventional mirrors any day of the week.
Yeah i saw a fella trying to back on a bay with them the other week and he was experienced driver just couldn't get to grips with the mirror cams and i ended up doing it for him and it was a struggle, are you glad you got into trucking?
@@truckitprayle Yes I love it! Wish I did it years ago.
Im glad you are enjoying mate! 😉
Nice video. I'd like to see how a blindside reverse is done. I am thinking of going for my class 1 next year and the blindside reverse is putting me off a bit. And when you are driving around forwards how do you know when you need to take up two lanes?
Well thats a good point and i was actually thinking of doing a vidro about defence driving so i will try make something on that in the near future.
I do have a blind side on my channel but i don't really go into to much depth so i will also do another one of them.
Thanks for replying. Another thing right.. Is lorry driving as lonely and stressful as people think it is? And do you have any tips for dealing with the stress?
When i first started i found it hard, but as i gained friends in the industry i started talking alot on the phone to them, and the great thing about nowadays is that theres so many good podcast and audio books to listen to.
And when you are waiting to be tipped or on break you can always watch my videos hahaha 😆
The problem with training companys in they train you to get a licence ? and Not how to drive a commercial vehicle ? Thats was spot on how to reverse a vehicle Let the vehicle do the work, When you get good you can position the steering wheel to go back in the right position before you stop going forward this will make it that much easier, Select reverse glid it in, Two many people wind the steering then stop.
Yeah, i get alot of people say that they wont do there test because they don't feel confident enough with the amount of training you get on reversing.
@truckitprayle I have put your CZcams video on my reversing page on my website along with some other tutorial videos. Hope that's ok? If so I can remove it no bother :)
Thats fine mate 👍
Very good instruction on how it's done.Retired now but noticed last 15 yrs drivers don't get out and help fellow driver ( which we are ) reverse into tight spaces.Equipment was crap then but the drivers looked out for each other. So welcome newbies to a world where they will sit in their cab an watch you hit something.Knowing once they were like you.Wankers
Yeah i have noticed that some people would rather film you smash up your truck rather than help you its a bit sad really.
What type of work do you do?
Started Container.Thurrock.Then progressed to ADR Tankers 25 yrs on continent.Coming out of Frajus tunnel into Italy no retarders then.Hug N/side lane hazards on relying on gears to slow you down.Winter id get to bottom stagger out of cab an think why the ef do I put myself thru this.Gets in your blood. Not fit for anything else.No phones then call office when u tip.An where do I re-load.Loved Spain in winter
That sounds like it's more exciting than your usual days work, are you away now?
Just passed 3a not done 3b yet had 2 cancellations in a row. Still terrible at reversing as I struggle to work out which way to turn the wheel. It would be great to see what you're doing with the steering wheel as you turn.
I will try and do one with a vamera on my hands for you soon mate 👍
@@truckitprayle lol.. I appreciate it's tricky to get perfect camera angles. Thanks though. 😊
It's doable it was a bit last minute this video so when i get more time i do that again
@@truckitprayle appreciate it man.
So i done another one with hands this time should go live tomorrow 10am 👍
Put abit on and catch it up. Bit on catch it up.
Exactly mate
As a newly qualified driver I panicked every time I have to put it into reverse great video everyone I’ve spoken to has said don’t be a @@@@ take a shunt 👍👍
Yes mate, thats right.
How long have you been driving?
@@truckitprayle 4 weeks 😂😂
Oh wow and how are you finding it?
@@truckitprayle yeh ok not doing it full time just filling in on quiet times with my business
Fair enough on agency then?
After driving for a year now, I still struggle get in between two trailers
It's not easy mate thats why its important to try get the trailor as straight on as you can as its really hard if you are at to much of an angle.
I'm thinking of training getting licence but that looks tricky
It's like most things my friend, at first it is but once you know it's like riding a bike.
What do you do now?
@@truckitprayle unemployed
Well its got to be better than nothing right?
Good luck if you do mate.
Iv got my test in 2 weeks
Exciting stuff mate, let us know how you get on!
Yeah 'Intentionally' mess it up 2:22
Haha accidentally on purpose 😅

Thats right mate!
SH one T happens!
Huh?
This is not a very good example of how to reverse mate, 2 shunts was not needed to get into that bay. You had tonnes of space to do it first time.
I did say i was intentionally messing it up to show how to rectify it mate.
@@truckitprayle ahh, I never heard that part, I just wanted to see the reverse, my bad.
