  • Maya Angelou born Marguerite Annie Johnson; April 4, 1928 - May 28, 2014) was an American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.[3] Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and acclaim.
She became a poet and writer after a series of occupations as a young adult, including fry cook, sex worker, nightclub dancer and performer, cast member of the opera Porgy and Bess, coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and journalist in Egypt and Ghana during the decolonization of Africa. She was an actress, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs. In 1982, she was named the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was active in the Civil Rights Movement and worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Beginning in the 1990s, she made around 80 appearances a year on the lecture circuit, something she continued into her eighties. In 1993, Angelou recited her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" (1993) at the first inauguration of Bill Clinton, making her the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at the inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1961.

The interviewer was no match for this powerful, trailblazing goddess. So much humility, so dignified, so composed, so eloquent, so worldly, so confident and intelligent. My favourite responses (if I had to choose, I love them all) would be: "The best there is to have, is the best for me, and I believe that the best there is to be, is the best for me. I'd like to be the very best." and "I want to be a fantastic human being...I want my gestures, my actions to display what I am inside". Ase! So said, so done. Spoken and lived like a true Aries queen. Love her!

My grand mother had the privilege to have her over for tea in London in 1972 and we still have a photograph of this brief encounter. Every time i am at my grand mother's place and have tea with her, i can't help but having a chill of reverence running down my spine, when i seat on the very sofa Maya Angelou sat and drink from a cup she might have drunk from.
The fact that this phenomenal lady with this incomparable life and destiny, entered my family's house and thought a member of my family to be worthy of her time and company, fills me with sheer gratitude.
My Nan because of her position, has had some illustrious guests, but Maya Angelou is definitely one of those i would have been so thrilled to meet. And although she has had Charles Spencer Chaplin and Josephine Baker for tea, Maya Angelou and Frida Kahlo, are the two persons i would have moved mountains to meet.

I would rather admire that than idolize modern Western celebrities who's fashion labels and reality shows fall short of truly reaching the integral parts of people's minds and cannot inspire the way Mrs Angelou's words can and still do.

I read "I know why the caged bird sings" back in the 90s and only learned this year that Dr. Angelou wrote 6 more autobiographies after that. She details her life while working on Porgy & Bess, organizing with Dr. King and Malcom X, living in Africa, her friendship with James Baldwin and 1200+ pages of stuff in between. I found an anthology in my local library that includes the first 6 of her autobiographies. Dr. Angelou's life is such a captivating read. I loved her voice and the descriptive way in which she painted her experiences in that small Southern town with such pride and love for that community. She brought to life a rural southern town for this reporter and gave dignity to the people whose lives were very hard in Stamps Arkansas. Maya Angelou was playing with this interviewer. She let him know at 14 she got a scholarship. She let him know the strippers were white and not her and she spoke fluently seven languages. Her life was very colorful and fulfilled. I dont like how he introduced her. He didnt have to talk about how she had a baby at 15 and worked at a brothel! Her credentials are amazing as she mentions this against the backdrop of agony of that inner seven year old raped and traumatized by that memory for a lifetime.

Such a gracious Lady! I heard her recite some of her poetries at the University of Reno, Nevada, many many years ago and her voice was so soft and cuddling. Such a bright woman! You see by loving to read books she became so prolific and powerful with her words. Amazing, because at that time were reading and writing was not encouraged she found Miss Flowers that took interest in her. The faith and patience of her grandma' molded Miss Angelou. Such a beautiful human being, a real African Queen. R.I.P. dear !

Maya has a great voice and a painful testimony. I love her. And why does this reporter sound fresh with his questioning. He doesn't even compliment Maya for anything, neither does he feel for her, oh these reporters of the eighties.

wow, exactly she spoke my mind, "real people are nice" so those who are not nice are not real
the interviewer tried to make her think she doesnt know what she's talking about by saying they where not real people, but she clearly understand every word and meaning...thank you Maya...the reason for racism etc is because those who do evil are not people but wicked spirits in human body.

This interview was beautiful, calm, flowing such that I could hear it, comprehend it ... I compliment the interviewer who listened, had respect, cared... it made it easy, pleasant to listen and learn rather than hear lots of interruptions which can make interviews difficult. Understatement, but Maya Angelou was quite insightful, super smart, sometimes surprisingly direct... always peaceful/lovely... inspiring.
