- Maya Angelou born Marguerite Annie Johnson; April 4, 1928 - May 28, 2014) was an American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.[3] Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and acclaim.
She became a poet and writer after a series of occupations as a young adult, including fry cook, sex worker, nightclub dancer and performer, cast member of the opera Porgy and Bess, coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and journalist in Egypt and Ghana during the decolonization of Africa. She was an actress, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs. In 1982, she was named the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was active in the Civil Rights Movement and worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Beginning in the 1990s, she made around 80 appearances a year on the lecture circuit, something she continued into her eighties. In 1993, Angelou recited her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" (1993) at the first inauguration of Bill Clinton, making her the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at the inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1961.

I am a white Cuban woman and Maya touched my soul over twenty years ago when I first saw her on the Oprah Winfrey Show. I’ve read all her books and poems. Because of her, “I Rise.” ❤
She thought her words could bring death, but her words have brought so much life to me and so many
How ironic huh? We know nothing and are everything at the same time🥰
I love the control this women commands
I love her poetry, and I write too. I may be the next great poet.
@@staceyadams7907 ALWAYS BELIEVE
@Valerie O'Brien Thank you.
Same! I just love her
Her self awareness as to where she stand in her surrounding inspires my second chance of living. At the age of 30 feeling as thou I am a failure, and not feeling confident about who I am as a person; I begin to realize that I could possible read my self back to confiding and trusting the person I'm.
Does the way the reporter introduces her bother anyone or is it just me...i felt like it was a lil disrespectful
Me too
She probably approved it. She was not ashamed of who she was
I liked how Maya hold herself so strong and together. Adorably, fashionably strong lady.
Not at all.. Maya story is very powerful story. There is nothing to be ashamed about. You do what you have to do to feed your family.
I did at first, then realized that she put tht info out there, n then I was in awe of her strenght again
Isn't she Graceful !!??Her voice makes my eyes tear up.......Her words cuts through someone's heart....The sound of her laugh.....Oooh.....She's the true definition & representation of a Queen....of a black woman .....i could listen to her all day ....
@Valerie O'Brien I already got it dear❤️
yes..... beyond
So respect this women words cannot express my feeling
Her voice gives me joy
She was a truly important, read her work if you've not. That voice....
Peace
“If they were real people... they’d be nice.” No truer words.

The interviewer was no match for this powerful, trailblazing goddess. So much humility, so dignified, so composed, so eloquent, so worldly, so confident and intelligent. My favourite responses (if I had to choose, I love them all) would be: "The best there is to have, is the best for me, and I believe that the best there is to be, is the best for me. I'd like to be the very best." and "I want to be a fantastic human being...I want my gestures, my actions to display what I am inside". Ase! So said, so done. Spoken and lived like a true Aries queen. Love her!
Lol, how dare Maya desire to be the best? The interviewer tried it and failed! NEXT QUESTION!
So true. ......True Queen
Exactly, strong grandmother in her life! Times of that period...some people yet live like that! Even sadder THINK nothing of it.
Chile he didn't know what to do with all that woman!
She made the interviewer look like a nincompoop
the audacity of this interviewer...so many rude moments. she held her own despite it all.
Yessss, "this poor, young, abused, black girl" 13:58
I concur!
You should see how he treated Barbra Streisand...another abuse victim.
I actually thought that he spoke to her with great respect... As though he was truly intrigued by her.
"If they're real people, they'll be nice" So there you have it, he's a "White folk'
She’s so soft yet powerful, comfortable in her own skin
Maya Angelou was a miracle. Her writing lifts me up, makes me cry, and gives me the courage to move forward each day. I recently bought her first book, "I know why the caged bird sings"
What a beautiful black intelligent woman before my eyes I love her smile
Maya Angelou!
She's an epitome of not just physical beauty but of grace, elegance, confidence, and humility to the core!
She's not one to be easily rattled by rudeness of any form - subtle or crude
Her soft spoken nature even made her more beautiful and appealing
An awesome personality!
*** God bless 🙏 you Maya 😇 Angelou!!! *** You are a great very 😍 beautiful person ❤ who has graciously risen above terrible adversity.
Beautiful Words so dear and true!❤ Bless You!
I love how she describes everything 😍
I could listen to this LADY talk all day. She makes you feel like you're there as she describes things.
My grand mother had the privilege to have her over for tea in London in 1972 and we still have a photograph of this brief encounter. Every time i am at my grand mother's place and have tea with her, i can't help but having a chill of reverence running down my spine, when i seat on the very sofa Maya Angelou sat and drink from a cup she might have drunk from.
The fact that this phenomenal lady with this incomparable life and destiny, entered my family's house and thought a member of my family to be worthy of her time and company, fills me with sheer gratitude.
My Nan because of her position, has had some illustrious guests, but Maya Angelou is definitely one of those i would have been so thrilled to meet. And although she has had Charles Spencer Chaplin and Josephine Baker for tea, Maya Angelou and Frida Kahlo, are the two persons i would have moved mountains to meet.
I don’t know what the heck y’all talking about.... She shut the report down!!!!! So elegantly, so balanced, so true and NICE. She handled this interview beautifully
✌\m/💪
Regardless of HOW THIS reporter started HIS NARRATIVE, 😒😑😒😑
"MISS MAYA ANGELOU"
IS WAS and WILL ALWAYS BE a TRIPLE THREAT. RENAISSANCE. REGAL.
FIERY. STRONG. INDEPENDENT SPIRIT OF BLACK FEMALE MAGIC.
NEVER SUPER WOMAN, but,
S U P E R B!💖💖💖
Heather T Fuck that swirling bitch. Sleeping with the enemy.
Billy Russo I really hope your an only kid! You profoundly confused, ignorant, immature, sad waste of flesh.
There is something unprofessional going on. However, The Beauty and purpose of their Icon, can not be overshadowed.
I admire the way she steered the conversation from the interviewer’s attempts at focusing on racism. She was a true enigma.
I love the way she talks about our people she’s a soul I will forever miss
Never forget her she had some nice stories 👍
Class is in session..
Definition of BLACK POWER
Black magic 🖤
Black.
What a powerful energy she is. Intimidating.
The irony is I did not see her as intimidating but she does have a very powerful energy without even trying when she speaks she just has a radiance and grace effortlessly.
@@LadyCharity I concur. Yet with that powerful energy she still felt welcoming to me. Her voice is very inviting and unifying to me. I feel like you could play any audio of her talking and it would be just as good as listening to your favorite musical artist.
More like inspiring!
Everytime she reads a poem I cry. Her way with words are so touching.
Absolutely, but what a lot of people do not realize is their opinion and highlight to discredit do not harm someone who is comfortable with their truth… I admire this about her and is quite motivated by her wise within her truth..❤
"If you were a real person, you would be nice" love it!
Not so many understood this
Beautiful soul. There is literally no one of the planet that can personify with the English language as great as Maya. You really can tell she did read every book in the library.
I learned about the human spirit more in this interview than ive learned in my lifetime . Not just about race (black, white etc.) but Human. Im so grateful to have found this piece.
I wish so much that she was my teacher as a child but she teaches me now, even though I mite not deserve her most wise and beautiful words.
you do deserve it. she would've been happy that she could guide you
I wish there was a heart button!
♥️❣️❤️🙂
❤
👑A True Queen......... In EVERY sense of the word!👑
Thank you
Queen is not the word, she is much more than Queen to me, she is some untouchable kind of regal magic, with wisdom that can only be earnt through the pain of life and conquering it, what must reside in this kind of heart, the heart of a goddess, mythical and yet more real than anything what a heart! I know more because of her, but I cannot touch her intelligence more than this, there's more so much more, she is an eternal spirit of words and love and wisdom, may Mrs Angelous words like gifts and echo's, remain loud and resounding throughout this world forever. What a Soul.
Ru Paul is Queen to me.
So true
@Valerie O'Brien all admiration is a form of idolatrous obsession in one way or another, our subconscious chooses it's own gods and respective parental figures but sometimes we should recognise the good and the greatness people are capable of it's necessary. I would rather admire that than idolize modern Western celebrities who's fashion labels and reality shows fall short of truly reaching the integral parts of people's minds and cannot inspire the way Mrs Angelou's words can and still do.
@@bethankrzowski4553 well said. She is someone we can aspire to emulate
She's such a good storyteller. Her stories never changes 😭🙌🔥
i love how she had made the reporter realize that asking about her past/future with husbands was none of his business...without saying it. i love her love her love her
Yes, one of my favourite parts of the interview! Lol. He sure back pedalled quickly....
Yeesss. She really put him on the spot. Asking him if he was asking for himself. Maya was very polite and composed. I thought it rude to ask her that. It broke my heart when she spoke about her rape. You could see the pain cross her eyes. Even after all of these years. I don’t think she ever allowed herself be a victim. Amazingly beautiful human being
This woman is extraordinary. She is beyond my imagination. So talented and such a great person. Great great admiration for her.
The beginning of interview... nm.. it was the 80's, when they were not sensitive to us... but i quickly forgot all about him once she spoke... i can never get enough of her.. i know shes up there reading poems to my son... i subbed! 💞
She was my cousin unfortunately never got the chance to meet her
🙏🏾🖤🙏🏾
True!! Because the introduction almost made me want to jump through my phone. 🤜🏾🤜🏾
God bless you
What a woman! What an incomparably powerful voice and heart! What an unmatched soul and spirit!
We all have the ability to be like her. Can you imagine a world filled with people like her?
I Love and miss you my queen.
39:05 " Of course I would live like that...why wouldn't I. " 😍😍😍😍
Love that respond.Oh that interviewer sneakily told her to stay humble. 39:54 smh. She had every right to answer his question how she did.
He was intimidated by her.
One of the finest humans to walk this earth. She inspires me so so much
I would listen to. Maya Anjelou and Angella Bassett are two voices I would listen to 24 hours per day. The sound and the way they carressed their words its just soooooo beautiful.
I agree. I would add Miss Cicely Tyson to that list.
She helped me understand myself as a black woman which is a journey only a fellow black woman knows. She reminded me of the woman I became and that I need to be thankful for every moment I lived my blues(my emotional struggles) and survived them.
So much dignity - the interview shows the attitude of the time . I can see sadness and pride - wow what a woman
It’s beautiful to watch her speak.. powerful to just listen.. thank you for leaving a legacy to follow
Well said
Her responses seem to roll straight over his flat head ! She really Takes the reigns freely , and lyrically .
who tf starts a interview saying she was raped at 7 years old(and continues to disrespect her as woman)..... Such a beacon of grace and intelligence she is and this is how he starts her introduction
unbelievable that an entire production crew aloud it to unravel.
I know, I was like what the fudge dude?!? That's so disrespectful
This woman is amazing! I find her so composed.
I read "I know why the caged bird sings" back in the 90s and only learned this year that Dr. Angelou wrote 6 more autobiographies after that. She details her life while working on Porgy & Bess, organizing with Dr. King and Malcom X, living in Africa, her friendship with James Baldwin and 1200+ pages of stuff in between. I found an anthology in my local library that includes the first 6 of her autobiographies. Dr. Angelou's life is such a captivating read. Im sharing as an fyi for those like me that didnt know that her written story didnt end with IKWTCBS. Enjoy!
...I've read them all time and again, & never grow weary of them.
I’m just discovering her writing so once I finish “Where the Caged Bird Sings” I want to read her autobiographies! 💘🌸
Chile! I mean 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sing' All the way in Jamaica we were eating peanut cake too, sound like my grandmother
She's my mentor , 😢 a sweet, beautiful soul , I love her so much .when she said," she wanted to be a Christian in her heart," the way she articulated her words, I could feel the fire 🔥 burned within because that's my greatest desire, to be a true Christian in my heart and overall a wonderful 😢human being. We , the African race , are truly blessed with some of the world's best .to God be the glory 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
While she was silence, she listened and learned so much. I carry her words in my head and heart. 💖
She ate the sounds around her
Rest-In-Peace, Mrs. Maya Angelou..
I loved her voice and the descriptive way in which she painted her experiences in that small Southern town with such pride and love for that community. She brought to life a rural southern town for this reporter and gave dignity to the people whose lives were very hard in Stamps Arkansas. Maya Angelou was playing with this interviewer. She let him know at 14 she got a scholarship. She let him know the strippers were white and not her and she spoke fluently seven languages. Her life was very colorful and fulfilled. I dont like how he introduced her. He didnt have to talk about how she had a baby at 15 and worked at a brothel! Her credentials are amazing as she mentions this against the backdrop of agony of that inner seven year old raped and traumatized by that memory for a lifetime.
...When I last viewed this 10 months ago, our world was a very different world. I just needed to hear her voice today to feel a little better about the world of today.
What a STUNNINGLY beautiful woman. 🙏🏾❤💯
She came from two entrepreneurial property owning families. A lot of her struggles came from her wanting to do everything on her own with help from no one. However, I think having those role models in her family gave her confidence that she could aspire to greatness.
So grateful to have been shown this gracious lady, her life story is a reflection on us all.
2day, years after she has passed, I want to let HER know, I love her passion to find her true authentic self..
My mission NOW💕
Such a gracious Lady! I heard her recite some of her poetries at the University of Reno, Nevada, many many years ago and her voice was so soft and cuddling. Such a bright woman! You see by loving to read books she became so prolific and powerful with her words. Amazing, because at that time were reading and writing was not encouraged she found Miss Flowers that took interest in her. The faith and patience of her grandma' molded Miss Angelou. Such a beautiful human being, a real African Queen. R.I.P. dear !
Her son told stories like her. It was a pleasure to get to know Guy. He always spoke of his mother with such admiration
I could look at her face for ever, it's so exspresive. Lovely lady.
THANKS FOR THE GIFT OF MAYO ANGELOU, WHAT GREATNESS WHAT POWER WHAT DIVINE WOMAN IS THIS ..I LOVE AND MISS HER DEEPLY BE BLESSED IN GRACE.
She is one woman that is control with such love and respect I wish there would be more like her and maybe we woman should change our way of life
She is the mother I would have had.
me too!
Charles Jeffery yes
My grandmother loved Maya Angelou, listening to Maya is like sitting with my grandmother again. It’s so comforting
Same
Wow! Beautiful she was that has no limitation.
She was a most excellent woman.
Her voice could heal oh I love it
True survivor and accomplished great Job Maya Angelou
I’m glad she had the support with her brother that’s just lovely
A Beautiful Soul💕💋Grateful to be able to hear a wise Women!!! What a honor Smiles
I've made her my grandmother (never met mine)i take her as my grand mother i learn from her,i listen to her .. she has taught me to love myself and to live gracefully embracing life acknowledging God and using my talents.. btw ... I'm here loving her earrings ... i think they are cute 😅
Maya has a great voice and a painful testimony. I love her. And why does this reporter sound fresh with his questioning. He doesn't even compliment Maya for anything, neither does he feel for her, oh these reporters of the eighties.
Everything about this amazing intellect never gets old...there is always so much to learn from her to inspire us..all the great ones leave us so much to live by.
REEL BLACK.....YOU HAVE BEEN MISSED! THAT YOU FOR RETURNING! THESE VIDEOS THAT GOLD FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH! THANKS!
Appreciated. We are doing our best to grow and be proactive/respectful to sharing outside content.

Wow, what a great find. The world certainly had a great one in Maya Angelou.
This is the most beautiful way I have seen words carried and conveyed.
I live in nc and I take Maya spirit with me when I need strength. She is so strong. Definition of a woman. Her stores and poems got me through nursing school and hard times.
The most accomplishment of my life is my son- ugh so beautifully said!
wow, exactly she spoke my mind, "real people are nice" so those who are not nice are not real
the interviewer tried to make her think she doesnt know what she's talking about by saying they where not real people, but she clearly understand every word and meaning...thank you Maya...the reason for racism etc is because those who do evil are not people but wicked spirits in human body.
This interviewer is the absolute worst. I mean the insensitivity that drips from his lips undeniably shows his inability to connect with her experiences.
and yet, She Rises... Shame on him and standing O to her. What a magnificent person!
Terrible introduction.
ugh, i know. he kept interrupting her too!
Sounds like a police interrogation when he starts talking
I agree. He is so frustrating. She has so much power and grace the way she did this interview 🙌
Magnificent woman. Very special.
Maya Angelou...is was a very remarkable women.A poet I soo admired. There is absolutely no slacking in here deliverance of her
Story.Nor in my opinion the harder the reporter tried to belittle Maya interlect the stronger her words and deliverance became. She is was Extremely Extraordinary .💯
I love that she demands respect so inspirational
So regal , so proud, so wise.
Will never be duplicated
M/s Maya Angelou is a great specimen of human being. I love her and love her work.
She was such a beautiful woman
WOW!!!! She’s 6’0”??!!! Amazing
This interview was beautiful, calm, flowing such that I could hear it, comprehend it ... I compliment the interviewer who listened, had respect, cared... it made it easy, pleasant to listen and learn rather than hear lots of interruptions which can make interviews difficult. Understatement, but Maya Angelou was quite insightful, super smart, sometimes surprisingly direct... always peaceful/lovely... inspiring.
She read him his rights out the gate, with that poem. I missed it the first time. Get em Yeye!
whew I just love miss Maya Angelou
Ms.Angelou was so beautiful omggggg😍
I never knew we share a birthday, i love her so much 🧡
Maya needs no introduction, she is very well known .she is a national jewel.
I could listen to her all day
Maya Angelou's poem I know why the caged bird sings is a masterpiece!
This is the most humble interview I have ever seen.
Yo that “yes good” after she read him from the ground up takes me OUT
She makes me feel like we're hearing a goddess speak. She was and is incredible.
Beautiful soul.
She is just amazing. She was and is a gift to the world.
she is fascinating - i smiled all the way watching this
