I remember actually trying out the Sega VR at London's SegaWorld arcade back in 1996, and it was quite a mind-blowing experience back then. The way the screen tracked my head movement made it feel like I was actually inside the game world. Since then, I've never seen anything quite like it again, and didn't even know what the VR headset was called... up until today.
i remember that, too! i was only 8 years old and knew it would be something of the future... well, until it was long forgotten again. the only souvenir i had from that place was a colour altering t-shirt. so sad, when i lost it :(
God...this is everything a 90s presentation is. Overly-exaggerated actors, nonsensical edits, dick snake oil presenter who offers no real answers complete with end of life regretting fashion choice. Man the 90s...what a time to be a live.
I remember trying the first VR in Trocadero London when I was still a teen, now I'm 41 and that "old, like 30" comment was to show itself very optimistic.
@Juu Tiup It wasn't just a "Glasses with a monitor". That was the Virtual Boy (a failed imitation), not Sega VR. The Sega VR was the first VR device with head-tracking movement. Even the video mentions it. I tried out a 3D arcade version of the Sega VR, called Sega VR-1, at a SegaWorld arcade back in 1996. It was a mind-blowing experience back then, and I always wondered why there hadn't been anything like it since... until I found out about the Oculus Rift a year ago.
+referral madness The arcade version I tried was more advanced than that what's shown here. While they only show 2D sprite graphics here, the game I tried had 3D polygon graphics. I only found out one or two years ago that the game was called Dennoo Senki Net Merc, and was powered by the Sega Model 1 arcade system. The way the arcade Sega VR headset worked was a lot like the Oculus Rift. Whenever you move your head (in all directions), the visuals update in real-time to match your head movement, making it feel you're inside a virtual world... I was quite young when I tried it, so it actually did feel like that for me at the time.
It is for these reasons that I believe in time travel these vr glasses are more attractive than they exist today. the glasses have technology 30 years ahead of their time. the consoles in 1993 were delayed. those glasses were placed in 1993 by someone very advanced.
I've heard about that Oculus Rift device, and it sounds almost like an identical copy of the Sega VR device... Either way, the gaming industry seems to be getting excited about the Oculus Rift... but where was all that excitement when the Sega VR was announced 20 years ago?
I know it would have bombed, but I really wish the Sega VR had released as intended. When it comes to progress in technology, sometimes you have to make mistakes to learn what to do right in the next iteration. If the Sega VR had released and was a failure, I’m certain the current state of VR would be more adept and refined as it would have caught the attention of more folks to see if they could’ve done better. At the very least, the Sega VR would’ve made for a fun AVGN episode. I think the health concerns could have been mitigated if each consumer was given instructions on testing whether they could handle it or not. I don’t doubt that a lot of the test subjects got sick, but I think the primary issue comes from personal tolerance rather than the technology itself. After all, even modern headsets like the Quest Pro can cause serious illness in some people; it’s important to recognize that VR isn’t accessible for everyone, but that’s not a reason to disregard it altogether.
+WhatsOnMyShelf Doom on the 32X, Virtua Racing , and a special "Space Harrier VR" would of been kick ass with "VR". Sadly the Sega VR head set never got released commercially.
@@ViRiXDreamcore I do remember seeing pics of Planet Harriers in a magazine bitd. It looked like a lot of fun, especially because of that crazy FOV. I think some of that knowledge was put into later Sega arcade games like After Burner Climax and Outrun 2. I'd still like to see Planet Harriers released in some form or maybe sequel / revamp like Galaxy Force 2 and Space Harrier 2 on Sega Genesis. Is emulation for the game solid?
@@WhatsOnMyShelf I'm actually not sure. I see full direct video feed of gameplay so I assume it's possible. I have the entire soundtrack though so it has to be possible.
I love that this all ends with them playing “Go Away” by Living Colour. Go look up the lyrics and you’ll see why this was either the most cynical song choice or ill-informed one (or both).
"I can see how people can get addicted to this" ... "I won't have to wait till im 30s" .. Actually SEGA may never have released this since it wasn't ready for market, other tech had to catch up, they foretold the future. I don't even give a fuck about flat screen games anymore after I got the Vive and Rift, you can take the best game and it's not even as fun as a B rated VR game. They foretold the future! now facebook owns Oculus and Google bought a chunk of HTC, it's happening folks. VR IS THE FUTURE
I still play flat screen games, but I totally get what you mean. Bought a Rift in november 2018 and although having big problems with motion sickness at the beginning, it felt immediately like the next big thing. Bigger than the switch from 2D to 3D gaming, cause whether it's some very early stuff like arcades with Pong or Space Invaders or beautiful present games like RDR2, you always were looking on the screen (yeah yeah, technically you also look at displays in VR). With VR though you were literally part of the game, you are IN it. Like you said, even the best flat screen games feel somehow "outdated" after having experienced VR. Especially with dedicated VR controllers and not half-assed solutions like the Move/Camera combi for PSVR. It's still in early adopter phase, but I think VR/AR will develop to something in scale like TV, smartphones, gaming consoles (flat screen), ... I also wouldn't be surprised if VR will become another alternative for movie fans. Big TV/beamer and home surround systems getting cheaper already lowered the number of people going to the movie theater regularly. Watching a movie on a 20x15m virtual screen floating in space, sitting on the moon while still being in your cozy flat/house is really nice. The low resolution of the Rift and other present VR headsets is still a problem, whether it's gaming or watching media, but this will get better and better in the upcoming years. There is a lot of research going on and we are only at the beginning. Virtual Boy, Sega VR, Forte VFX1, ... it was still too soon for this kind of tech. Even now It's a little too early, but Rift/Vive were like the first iPhone. Still not sophisticated, but close and therefore you can at least start to make a foundation as a niche for hardcore fans of Virtual Reality. With time and money you can go for the next steps and optimize it. The big plus point of also being early adopter company is a) experience with the technology and therefore having a headstart when it comes to competition and b) consumers already knowing your brand/platform which helps in terms of financial planning, investors, potential buyers, ...
I find it hilarious how the spokesperson can't even explain the product he's trying to advertise properly. Its no wonder there were only a few people sitting in the audience.
Sega bullshited the public by telling them the reason the VR set was never released was because the graphics were so real people would walk with the headset and trip over. Somebody at Sega saw too much Videodrome!
The host had no actual information or demonstration other than putting the presumable unfinished and nonworking prototype on a guy's head and failing to answer any questions.
My word, that was incredibly cringing. It was as though Alan Partridge made it for Saga. Christ, we were easily pleased (and duped) by TV back then. I felt embarrassed for myself.
Wtf sega its shit like this why u lost the console wars. If sega vr would have been release with a bundle deal for the genesis tower of power bundle that would have included 32x,cd and the vr headset with 1 demo game it would have sold like crazy. Ugh i would have killed to got my hands one one.
"I thought I had to wait until I'm old - like 30!" ...and then he had to.
😂
😂😂
I thought the same thing when he said that 😂😂😂
People saying that being 30 is old.
Me: 35 years old * sobs*
Wrong, depending on how old he is, 40.

^Which is an amazing product.^
reading your comment just made me think about the series future man :D
4:25 it's a gyro-telescopic-satellite-linkup-hookup thing
this line killed me :)

Turned 30 and got the Oculus Rift.
graviton08 Same here :D
The audience's excitement was palpable.
That’s none other than MTV VJ Alan Hunter!
I'm collecting Sega thanks to this!
We're going to look back in 30yrs and laugh at how primitive the oculus and vive were.
If only Sega finded a away to mass produce this device. It might have been one of the best add-ons for Mega Drive.
lol this video is hilarious.
And now that guy works as an assistant manager at Walmart.
Hey I'm almost 30! Take that back!
yeah that cut me deep also
lol it was so corny and funny
and now we actually have proper VR at home. Sega was dreaming, but they knew their dreams are right just the tech is behind.
Back then, VR was just silly. Now look how far it's come. Everyone wants an Oculus or PlayStation VR.
I miss those days.
SEGA didn’t know what to do with their success. Impressive “doesn’t hurt”
VR technology! 😆
The future is now, what a time to be alive
we have come along way
What is VR? Wherever you turn, it surrounds you, its like you're in another world! Its Vurtaaaa Racinnn'!!!
and now we finally have VR!
+James Gambino
Yeah. Had to wait 20 years for it to finally happen. Lol.

Ah, early 90's advertising.
As the 100% always right psychic, I had a vision from the future and I
can tell you with 100% certainty that Sega VR will be a rousing success!
The Sega VR has a gyroscope in it, so it did head tracking.
Who knows if they ever really got it to work as it seems they were all talk.
Back to the future literally
@hellspit2003
Some care, its just expensive to do and so buy. Many gamers would LOVE to play with a headset.
You have to know it's bad... WHEN THEY NEVER SHOW YOU THE GAMES!
A modern smartphones have 3 way accelerometer with a proper improvisation, you can have a crude VR headset.
Spider-Man was just standing there lol....
It's almost 2011 and i'm still waiting for real VR.
Welp, the future is now it seems. A lot can change in 9 years.
It's now 2024 and if you feel like it, you can go buy a vr headset for a reasonable price and hang out with big titty anime girls.
nice find
Dane, when can we expect to see a review of this on your channel?
22 years too early.
"Is this UHF or VHF"
"It's VR!!! dUHHH!!"
That Shirt Tho!
That was pretty funny!
I've heard about that Oculus Rift device, and it sounds almost like an identical copy of the Sega VR device...
Either way, the gaming industry seems to be getting excited about the Oculus Rift... but where was all that excitement when the Sega VR was announced 20 years ago?
sega was really ahead of its time, 23 years later sony finally realeses a head seat for its console
In fact, this is the "ancestor" of PlayStation VR.
"I thought I'd have to wait until I was old, like 30 to get VR at home." Haha.
reminds me the video "time traveler arcade sega 1991"
this is priceless
If they ever made this, that would be much more popular than the Virtual Boy..

@Kyosama08 I would imagine this would have been interesting than the Virtual Boy
SEGA VR, a.k.a the PlayStation VR's ancestor.
Sony stole Parker Lewis' buzzwords
everything was better in the 90s
I can promise you VR was not better in the 90s.
It looks like Oculus Rift. There is a headset on it.
@supermansteve32 It actually DID work. Maybe they just realized they wouldn't make money with it.
darn I want this it looks good but the gameplay is unknown is better then the r zone and virtual boy

I hope they didn’t pay those actors much

Uh, Hello? SEGA VR, DUH!
funny how it become reality :D
interesting what people thinking there about this product :D
Wow, I had no idea. How much was this estimated to cost?
$200
$200
it's like a drug trip.
Hey better than the virtual boy and the tiger r zone
actually there will be a virtual reality one day!
Its just the technology is not there yet..
90's and VR crazyness. We are now seeing the same with 3D stereocopy now. Also this technology will die, so as VR did.
Oculus rift before it was invented.
