No Spoilers! : The anime is based off of korean manhwa(manga) which u might already know and it's known for it's elements and themes of multiplayer RPG's and raids (yes were right).
Also its popularly known for seemingly straight forward story but with misleading clues, unexcepted blend of twists and nonlinear story telling. SL is one of the most visually stunning manhwa with hype moments, and top of that it showcase clothing fashion, artwork and contemporary style.
If you're already a fan of games similar to this, you'll enjoy this anime! I'm waiting for all the good stuff, i hope they continue and complete the manhwa after S1!

Solo Leveling is actually based on a Korean manhwa! Bascically its colored manga. And SL in particular is known for its amazing art and the anime studio is doing it justice so far.
Solo Leveling is also a pioneer manhwa which popularized the trend of similar manhwas these days(dungeons,leveling,monsters,etc).

SL is NOT a pioneer in the slightest, it popularized some tropes, but [spoiler?] was introduced a long before Solo Leveling. For example, one of the first manhwas that did it were "The gamer" and "The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor".

Glad you gave it a chance. I commented like 3 days ago recommending it. I read the manhwa all last month and I love video games and first chapter I was like "this is a video game like wow" like you did. I throughly loved the art and fighting scenes. Once I saw the statues I thought about Hogwarts Legacy which came out last year. On top of that they have OST by attack on titan which was the best ost imo of all anime. Especially since A1 pictures is going to "SOLOely" focus on this as their next anime...I knew they were going to go all in on this anime.

Just a correction A-1 pictures is not solely focusing on Solo levelling this season, they also are doing Mashle which might be a coincidence of what u mentioned is regarded as the Harry Potter of Shonen. 😅
Just a little help, korean names are usually three syllables, so in terms of our main protagonist Sung Jinwoo, Sung is his last name and Jinwoo is his first name, and always go in the order of last name then first name

The manhwa is well drawn and highly detailed, and the thing I love about korean webtoons and manhwas it that they're fully colored so it's makes it more immersive and oh there is a Solo Leveling video game coming out for mobile and pc
5:10 Yep! Many South Korean "manga"(manhwa) from 2015 to now have this theme. Something that makes the characters fight like a video game, but with different stories about how they adapted to it.

haven't read the LN... all I can say is that the Manhwa of Solo Leveling is the very first 'comic' that made me also become a 'reader' instead of just watching anime all the time.
The manhwa's art was just so G O D L I K E. I can't even remember exactly why I decided to look for something to read that time because I never really liked looking at pages of 2D drawings with chat bubbles but I'm glad I did.
There's just 3 things that I wanna say for everyone who knows nothing about this but are curious as to what the HYPE is about:
1) The story of SL is pretty basic but it does have some depth to it, especially on the latter part towards the end... I'm sure it was the ARTSTYLE that got most people hooked anyway.
2) Sung Jin Woo's character-design as a whole is just badass. He's the GOAT.
3) I think all the readers realized as they were reading SL... that it has the potential to be one of the most memorable anime of all time... due to one iconic line.. You'll see (ehem ehem)

It’s base on a Korean web novel and later a manwha or Korean manga. The city is Seul, Korea. The event is actually world wide not just in Korea. If the dungeon is not cleared in 7 days the seal breaks and the monsters come out like the ants in the island. Once you beat the boss you have 60 minutes to get out. That is way the walking time is important 40 min to get out only leaves 20 minutes to collect the loot. The guilds (many) and the association are not the same. This are basic things to help enjoy the story. The web novel had 17 hunter in that first dungeon not 13. I guess they saved some drawing cost.

this is Anime by Japanese based on Korean Manhwa. I think Korean company is planning to make drama version of it.
A lot of Korean manhwa tends to follow the trend of a tower or portals in dungeon format, people have classes/abilities/skills and earn loot through the dungeons, and usually also have a ranking format for the dungeons, items, and people involved. Solo Leveling was not the first to do it, but really popularized the genre so you find a lot of others doing the same. If you ever get into reading manhwa, you definitely won't find a shortage of it.
Jinwoo is as cool as Ichigo if not more. You're gonna love him!
I just realized this first scene in this episode was that jeju island raid that they said they did during the so called "ant king" arc. It wasnt showed in the webtoon.

The opening scene is an actual raid on an island with a gate outbreak.
Portals or gates as they are called pop up randomly all over solo leveling's version of earth. They are typically filled with monsters and otherworldly terrain. If a gate is not cleared, the monsters will leave the gate and it becomes an "outbreak" like what happened on the island in the beginning.
I will not name the island for now and will refrain from saying more to avoid further spoiling you.

well koreas good at games so it be likely their system of hunter be based on it for easy of use :P and cha hae-in she not so much shy as she et special cerimstance so not like being around people.
Aslo remember once you Awaken you stuck at a certain level of power and can't get stronger just can learn how to optimize your skills and how to fight, but once you C rank, your magic will never get stronger you will always be C rank.

when i discovered this manhwa i binged it in 2 days artstyle was so cool (but story itself is mid or slightly above that). Hope anime can keep up with artstyle and maybe they will make some story improvements

many people hype it a lot, but except for the art of the manwha and possibly the animation of the anime... it is hardly anything super, story is mid, twists are predictable, only 2 major plotwist are good but they are plot armor so whatever. the art created a ripple in use even now, but since i read both webnovel and manwha i would like to say it is overrated and i've seen better even in the context of hunters and gates, at least my opinion. but for a first time viewer it should be plenty but i have seen stuff before SL so it had less impact.
