She was baffled at my concern as she thought the engine just need to dry out. £4000 later she sold the car as it never ran properly after that. I stay clear of deep floods

    I was told by my dad _(RIP)_ 45 odd years ago, just after I'd past my driving test, _"Never take you car into water that you don't know the depth of. It could be 6 inches deep. It could be 3 foot deep."_
    And I never have. The last time I came across a flooded road that I didn't know. I stopped. Looked and a voice of my dad came into my head. So I turned around to find another route.
    That being said. I find it hilarious how some people charge into floods. They have the attitude of, _"The faster I go through this flood. The faster I'll make dry land."_ *_Errr... NOPE!_* 8-))...

      You dad gave you good advice. I used to work as both a driving instructor and part time i worked as an off road driving instructor. Even if you know the road you still don't know whats happened to the road surface underneath. Floods can lift manhole covers or create sink holes you can't see becouse they are covered in water. Fast flowing water can rip up the road surface and the other danger is debris in fast flowing water being wash down streem, your 4x4 might be able to handle the depth but then when your half way across half a tree comes down steam. There are hidden dangers everywhere, 1st option with any flood, is there another root i can take to avoid it. I have even made the mistake my self. When i lived on a farm i drove my Land Rover through a flood it could easly handle, only problem is i was unaware some scumbag had been there in the night just before the road flooded for a spot of fly tipping. Things suddenly started to not feel right and as i drove out of the flood making many funny noises there was an old bed mattress rapped around my front left wheel, all the rusty springs sticking out it got hooked up on my brake pipe and around the front wheel and axle. Reversing only seemed to make things worse so i ended up jacking it up but still i couldn't untangle the mass of coil springs sticking out everywhere, Didn't do any damage to my landy but i just couldn't get it off, must have took me a few hours to remove the thing which did include a walk home which was just over a mile away mile away in the pooring rain to get some cutters out the workshop to then have to walk all the way back.Could have been worse i know but If i'd simply gone around i'd have save myself alot of time and a long walk in the rain.

He didn't encounter any mechanical issues.
      There might be the occasional case, but all the tales of EVs failing after going through a flood seem to evaporate on closer inquiry. It’s always amusing when someone does the Jeremy Clarkson “power” approach to a flood. As soon as the bow wave hits the engine air intake it’s always game over, the engine takes a gulp of water causing a hydraulic lock that normally ends with a very expensive wrecked engine!

    • @radishpea6615

      @@radishpea6615 And hydraulic being incompressible liquid, it’s the hydraulic effect of incompressible liquid that damages the engine. So both are correct. I’ve seen bent con rods and twisted or broken crankshafts due to the hydraulic effect.

    • @charliegould5865
      @charliegould5865 Před 5 měsíci

      @@radishpea6615 It is, water like any liquid will not compress so the engine if it’s turning at any speed try’s to compress the water and as it can’t something has to give way. Hence the bent con rods or twisted crankshaft, whatever is normally catastrophic and the engine will need major repairs or replacing. So I call it a hydraulic lock and you call it a hydrolock, same thing really, results in a big bill. The engine may start afterwards but if it has bent a con rod or two or twisted the crank won’t run properly. If the engine was only at idle there’s a slim chance it might survive. So when you see a video of a car that’s gone through deep water and they’ve got it restarted but there steam coming out of the exhaust, it may be running but is it running properly?

      I've taken my MG4 through plenty of shallower floods (not so deep, I don't want my carpets soaked) and it is absolutely fine. EVs are much better than ICE cars at driving through water.

    These drivers are going much too fast, and most of them don't even know where their engine intakes are.
    The whole secret to fording is to go slow and steady, in 4LO if your vehicle supports it. Kick up waves and they might bounce off the inside of the hood and end up in your engine intake. Also, charging through water can literally tear parts off your car.
    Slow and steady. If it's too deep, it's too deep. At today's prices, a hydro-locked engine is a devastating event.

    Going fast, as well as creating a bow wave and higher splashing, ALSO increases the chances of floating, losing traction and aquaplaning off the side. These numpties are lucky the water is still, not flood waters crossing the ford.

    Most SUV's should be ok with 60 cm (2 ft) of water, if only they went SLOW. Most have the air inlet well over the waterline, but that bow wave is killing them.

    Вообще проезд глубокой водяной преграды грозит не только гидроударом, но и попаданием воды в масла коробки передач, раздаточной коробки передач, дифференциалов передней и задней оси. А это также затраты кроме того что, если вы не думаете о замене масла там, можно приехать на ремонт этих узлов потому что масло уже не выполняет свою работу

    People seem quite jolly to be getting towed out the flood, when their car mechanic tells them their engine is totally destroyed due to hydrolock, I guess the reality of what actually happens when you drive your car underwater will eventually sink in.
