This solo is fucking masterpiece.
the great guthrie govan
and it was done all improvised in one take
Reminds me of Gilmour.
@@Chinookman The solo in the second half reminded me of Alvin Lee, specifically the solo at the end of the bluest blues. The earlier parts reminded me of King Crimson(Robert Fripp).Great solo but it doesn't displace Comfortably numb for me, but it does go on my list. 👍
I agree, but who decided to play an ad in the middle of it lmao
Steven Wilson, the greatest artist you’ve never heard of.

Steven Wilson, the greatest artist*
Except he is pretty well known.
Except that his songs are laaaame... lame and infantile. As the vast majority of pop music today

How do people make music like this? I have headphones on, I'm sitting across from my wife and she is looking at me wondering what is wrong because I am suppressing the urge to burst into tears....
Hold her.
Kiss her.
Hug her.
Love her.
_Cherish_ her.
While you still have her.
Because you never know when you might end up in this poor guy's shoes.
Give her xnanx

Probably because you're gay
Lol. 👏👏
This song resonates very much with me, as me and my girlfriend had a terrible car accident last year. A drunk and high driver lost control of her car and hit us head-on. Knocked our car straight on the sidewalk, it was unrecognizable after. We both fainted, and woke up later with the glass from the windshields in our mouths. Fortunately, we got out (or maybe they pulled us out, we don't remember) and people helped us out. We were in the hospital for a few days, and luckily walked off only with a concussion, a broken wrist on my part, and various bruises for both of us. But I remember breaking down crying when my gf lamented a weird pain in her stomach on the drive in the ambulance. I begged the paramedics to look after her and forget about me, I was convinved I was going to lose her. Thank God it all worked out. :)
Wish you all the best man! Hope you are&will be all fine.

Guthrie made that guitar cry in that solo. Perfect
Not only the guitar :')
The guitar, and all of us
His solo in regret is just incredible. I'd love to know why the last note he bends is a tear-jerker every time.
Possibly the greatest guitar solo ever???

One of the best guitar solo I ever heard
By one of the best guitar players of the 21st century.
777the neighborofthebeast *musicians There are far better guitarists than Steve.
Like Guthrie Govan?
777the neighborofthebeast YES! I recently got into him, he is godlike. Probably my third favorite guitarist after Marty Friedman and Eric Johnson.
Two other phenomenal players.
Probably one of the best guitar solos in the whole rock music history.
Not at all
@@rabinskc3856 why
Guthrie has so many phenomenal solos.
It is imo, as it conveys exactly the feeling of that paper guy. It is absolutely brilliant and I‘d really love to see Guthrie doing less shred and more feel like here (although his shred is also sublime of course)
Not even close to Ancestral
Guthrie Govan's solo at 5:07 should be protected by UNESCO.
jajajaj
No one from this world can protect.Just because it not from this world.
It's one of my favorite guitar solos of all time. I came here today just to listen to it again. The emotion from that solo I aint never heard from any other guitarist.

👌You've Got That Right ! ! ! ✌❤& Rock&Roll,,,ReallyDigsMySoul 😎
This song can never die....
This song transcends time
Everything dies. Even Mt. Fuji...
This comment needs to die.
In Steven Wilson's own words:
“The song is based on a story but one that wasn’t mine; it was suggested to me by the guy [Hajo Mueller] who was illustrating, doing the artwork and the book. The idea is about a couple driving along in a car at night, very much in love; the guy is driving, and his partner - his wife or girlfriend or whoever she is - is in the passenger seat, and the next minute she’s gone.
“The guy is crazy: What happened? Where did she go? He does all the obvious things: looks under the seats, stops and checks the road, all of that. The song is basically about missing time; it’s the idea of blocking out time because of something so traumatic that you literally remove it from your mind.
“The story ultimately winds up with the ghost of the partner coming back, years later, and saying, ‘I’m going to remind you now what happened that night.’ There was a terrible car accident, and she died, etcetera, etcetera - again, the idea of trauma leading to a missing part of this guy’s life. He can’t deal with the reality of what happened, so he blocks it out - like taking a piece of tape and editing a big chunk out of it. It’s a sad, very beautiful song about loss.
“It has an extraordinary guitar solo. Guthrie’s playing is just sublime. That, for me, is the memory of this song. I had done a solo on the demo, knowing that I wanted an anthemic, epic solo at the end. In the studio, we did four or five takes, and each time Guthrie would reinvent the idea of what the solo could be.
“The particular solo we chose was either the first or the second one. It was so inspired and had such a beautiful sense of logic and storytelling to it. It’s one take, unedited, and it’s just unbelievably brilliant. And it’s improvised - he didn’t plan anything. It was such a moving experience to hear him play it. I was almost in tears."
Richard Handler Thank you!
Richard Handler that's really interesting to know
Thank You my fellow youtuber :)
Thanks Dick Handler, you're helpful as always.
That's why we love the King
The fact that the solo was completely improvised aswell is just mindblowing. I can't grasp my head around how someone can play this beutifully just off the top of their head. Unbelievable
And he did it in one take...unedited...insane.
guthrie govan 😎
Good knowledge of musical theory, scales, etc
Yeah, no kidding. On first listen then seeing the live video take, just can't believe I've not heard of this guy. Just phenomenal.
Its so crazy! I tried to learn it by ear. It took weeks. I still cant play it like him, and definitely not improvise like him :D

Steven, if you're reading this, please have CZcams remove the ads in the middle of the video. This is completely unacceptable. A song like this should NEVER be interrupted
Weeee la re vivía
Seriously. Every time I rewatch this video, I try to just immerse myself into the story and the music. Right before the solo comes on, I’m about to get emotional, because I know what’s coming. Then the ads absolutely cut it off, and it ruins the whole piece of art for me.

Makes me really sad that Steven didn't get the amount of recognition he deserves for his brilliant music. He definitely is amongst the greatest musicians alive still most people have not even heard his music.
great musicians don't get recognized ever. ed sheeran and eminem gets recognized
Well, he did fill out the Royal Albert Hall and his album To the Bone did really well (I think it was topping some chart for number 1 spot). He's made a good enough success from his music for it to be worth his while and for him to be remembered by the prog fans. So it's not like he's really not recognized, but I understand what you're getting at. I'd think that this is actually better for him, as the life that comes with the huge fame of big pop stars is usually a destructive and uncomfortable one. He's probably way more comfortable in his current lifestyle.
Na this is shit "music"
That's true. The best musicians and true artists are the ones you haven't heard of; not the general hacks that dominate the charts.

Guthrie: Imma make you cry
With the video while he's playing, it's quite emotional, and I'm not one to get emotional easily from music even though I am a passionate musician myself. The whole song and video put together are where this song really shines and delivers it's true impact in my opinion.
@@RyanxDunn yeah! Rarely noticed but broadly enjoyed thing is the song is incomplete without this awsome animation. Hat's off to him whoever made this. And nothing to say about the next level lyrics and music of course.

As a man who lost the love of his life in a very similar fashion... this is hard to watch, but so beautiful. Like most of his videos are. Does anyone know, did he lose someone too? He just understands the feeling of loss so well... It's gotta be from personal experience. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but it feels good to be understood. I've never written an artist a letter before, but I feel like I should write him. To just say thank you.
Sorry to hear that. I think it is a guy who lost his love, maybe not in this fashion, though interpretation shows how much he cared for her and that's why he started drowning in my view. The video really hits hard and definitely makes you thank the ones you have in my oppinion. Be strong brother
+Ryan Evans (Sakreligious) i think he is just a man that understands the emotions of people. for i have the ability, but can't write or play music!

He is 6 now
This solo is so good that comes at a close #2 after Buck Dharma's one in "The last days of May" played in the BOC live album "On your feet or on your knees". And that is the best compliment i can give.
Here after the Beato interview. This solo is truly unbelievable but knowing Guthrie couldnt play a string since the guitar had issues makes it even crazier. What a force of nature
I think the solo just throws all the pain, sorrow and repressed anger out, slowly at first and then unstoppable with the realisation. Great story telling in this song. Powerful and hits you right in the feels!

This solo is breathtakingly amazing. To think of how it was played even more stunning: one take, improvised, no editing, yet still combines technicality and emotion so perfectly.
+Xiyu Yang The guitar solo most certainly was NOT improvised. Do you know nothing about SW?
Joseph Bennett SW himself said in a interview that it was improvised by Guthrie. And yes I do consider myself knowing about his music.
If it is the interview I think you are alluding to (he doesn't give many), I was under the impression that SW was referring to the guitar solo on Regret #9, but I may be wrong. You are 'knowing' about his music, after all.
+Joseph Bennett Well you can clearly hear Guthrie's style of soloing ! Being a big fan of Guthrie, I know this is improvised, he never plays the same solo twice ;)
Joseph Bennett No I'm not, read it here, www.themonolith.com/music/music-video-steven-wilson-make-the-drive-home/
However, I don't think SW mentioned that the guitar solo on Regret #9 is improvised. Guthrie did say that he borrowed an American Deluxe Strat for that solo, it might be improvised, it might not.
No need for the sarcasm pal. I know SW rarely improvises anything in PT, No-Man, Bass Communion, Blackfield, I.E.M. or Storm Corrosion. I can tell that almost nothing in all these projects are improvised. However, he is very open to improvisation in most of his solo works, perhaps excluding Insurgentes.

I love Govan's guitar solo, he really gives pain an identity. When you think the pain is subsiding, Minnemann pops in to give his opinion and the guitar and drum begin this gut wrenching exchange. 777the neighborofthebeast I would like to meet Jennifer Lawrence...she seems cool.
José Kassai my brother and his buddy got to meet the band once. said wilson and the others are all really nice normal guys. my brother is a musician, he plays the drums and he loves this band although metal was more his thing. i wish i had been there, although i probably would have been speechless because i have a crush on steven and im old.
777the neighborofthebeast Guthrie is a great guy, really down to earth. Met him after an Aristocrats concert but unfortunately there were an awful lot of over-excited guitar players and people my age who are a bit less self aware. Seemed uncomfortable with the drunk hugs and inane questions like "Can I have your guitar pick" and "Who is the best guitarist in the world", which is understandable. Treat him like a human being and he's a very personable guy.

This is one of the most beautiful songs i'd ever heard in my life. Guthrie govan's guitar solo is out of this world❤️
I came to this song after watching the Rick Beato interview (which was fantastic by the way!). I have been a Porcupine Tree fan since I first learned of them in 2005. Seen them live three times. I haven't followed Steven's solo work as closely. I just listened to this song for the first time and it moved me to tears. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Guthrie's solo was absolutely incredible. This is one of those very rare moments in my life that I cherish so much because I just heard a song for the first time that I absolutely loved immediately added to my favorites list after one listen. Thank God for Steven and the gifts he's been given and the amazing work he's been doing for many many years now.

People are very impressed with the guitar solo; it's exceptional, a fact, but what really stands out is the theatrical context, the construction of the drama, the emptiness and hopelessness as protagonists, it's as if we invited guilt, pain, sadness and perplexity for not accepting the facts , all contained in musical notes that express sensations that many do not like to face, but that are always present, sometimes more intense, sometimes more subtle, and only the very sensitive can capture the waves of multi-feelings that gather within a human being. this is the great force in Steven Wilson's musicality; this one, a troubadour of tragedies and the wizard Guthrie Govan honoring primacy over speed; tearing souls into deep immersion; to say: A masterful solo, sovereign, detached from everything that has been heard in the current moment in the history of the guitar. Congratulations from an unconditional admirer of the colossal work proposed by a group of geniuses united by the love of music built on the flames of excellence.
What he said! X
Is there anything Steven Wilson can't do? Yeah, he can't write a bad song. This lad is just from another whole level.
+adrian5b As far as I know, he can't flip a pancake while riding an 8-foot high unicycle. But knowing SW, he probably can do this too.
Permeating
This is the greatest solo of all time.
This song was on repeat for one whole week on my EarPods while skiing in France 5 years ago. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song so much at a stretch without getting fed up.
Best guitar solo of the last 15 years on Planet Earth. Such a touching song. It moves you so deeply.

One of the finest songs from this planet.
The solo from Guthrie is from another planet.
This kind of music cannot be produced by AI, it can only be produced by HS (Human Soul).
You know whats amazing with the Steven and porcupine tree? They compose deep music. Their music always has a lot of meaning attached to it.
You guys are the ones who I personally think represent the artists of this century.
Steven please come to India!!!
From 5:07 it just reminds me of all the pain I've ever suffered. 💖
My love died on his drive home. Thank you for the most deeply emotional piece I have heard since then, Steven Wilson. This helps me endure it.
So if this track has existed for over 7 years how come commercial radio stations insist on playing the same old thing over and over without ever notifying us of the existence of music like this.
5:08 Easily the best guitar solo of this decade hands down
Agreed. Mind blown. This from a Floyd and Dream Theater fan...
*Easily* one of the biggest exaggerations of this decade, *hands down* 🙄
No one cares
Boring
@@wildizer OH WOW THAT MAKES IT PERFECTLY REAL THEN
Steven Wilson, you are pure musical genius. This world has no idea how incredible you are.
I used to just listen to this track either on youtube or spotify. Today it was playing on youtube. I never really thought noticing the animation video. Today I did. Ended up crying.
listening to this whilst doing geometry homework makes the chorus saying "drive home" sound like "triangle"
right in the fucking feels....
The bit that starts at 4:37 makes my heart melt.
same :D
Starting at 5:08 .... Breathtaking solo + heart wrenching flashback = goosebumps every very time ! I've never had a cartoon made me want to cry :(
So I just saw an interview with Steven that he did with Rick Beato where he said that as soon as they began to track the solo the E String popped out of the saddle so Guthrie had to play that entire solo without the E string. Steven decided that was the keeper.
" Limitation is the mother of invention"
I discover this song in the game the last day of June I can't get over the game.
I went the other way. I was introduced to this song then heard about the game. The ending of the game hit hard.

I could have find a better way to start the day. I'm gonna be depressed until going to bed now. Such a beautiful song and video !

The only song that came to my mind when I met my soulmate for the first time. This song speaks for me.
When will people stop comparing? This whole song is a masterpiece all by itself..
true....
The only thing I could compare in this video is the main character with Stewie.
Steven Wilson plumbs the depths with such musical elegance it unnerves you, but in the best way.
Marko Barrows .
223 dislikes? Really? Couldn't take the pain? This is so beautiful and emotional. We have all been here.
The fact that youtube has put ads in this video is vandalism
The video and the solo makes you cry as much as guthrie makes the guitar cry
Keane meets Pink Floyd. Can't stop listening to it! The guitar speaks in tongues!! The change of rhythm and speed, and all held together. Utterly beautiful!!!!!
