Bad Gear - Roland R-8M - Rack 808???

- Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about one of the classic late 80s, early 90s Roland black frontplate rack instruments, the Roland R-8M. Is this much-loathed drum module dinosaur and sequencerless version of the R-8 the rack 808 we have been looking for?
Thanks to
/ poptracker
for the Roland R-8M and don't forget to check out his Roland JX-305, as well:

AudioPilz makes better tracks as a joke than I do when I am dead serious. The track he made with this thing was a banger! What a talent.
Thank you!
just to make sure there's no confusion, though, the track after the credit is the demo song on the ROM card, by Roland. czcams.com/video/3WkqlwF9jMw/video.html
I heard he was asked to make the new Donkey Kong OST. I assume the game will be about Funky Kong and his bad audio gear.
Agree, all videos have great tunes but in this particular one the 90's eclectic is out of this world. True late late 80's extension to 90's feeling, love it.
very true. this guy could be a famous rap producer or whatever any time he wants
The jam at the end absolutely slaps, that was like if Buddy Rich was trapped inside of an 80's rack unit.
Maybe he is;)
uff what a joy
Y E S
EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING
This shit KNOCKS
He was there. Together with his buddy Animal.
this channel is a bizarre mix of gear, comedy and wild creativity - i love it. Do you have a Patreon, 'cause I'll support you x
Thanks! Coming soon!
@@AudioPilz Discord might be fun too
He has such a distinct cadence to his speech; it's like the same 8 or so notes looped. This rack sounds so good; if only these weren't the most overly sampled sounds on the market, I'd buy one. Whoa, that end piece!
It's the techno approach to public speaking ;) Thanks for the feedback...
Good one! I'm a sucker for old Roland rack mounts. The JV1080 is still a mainstay in my rig to this day.
Only heard good things about the JV1080
I agree with you guys. I have the JV2080 myself only because it has 8 slots for cards. Mine is nicely loaded with the Asia, World, Vintage Synths, 60s&70s, Orchestral 1 and Hip Hop cards. All great sounds.
The JV1080 is also my main module. besides the holy trinity Korg M1 , D50 en DX7
One can have it virtual in the Roland Cloud. Those strings the JV1080 is famous for even sound better in the RC version.
@@palyndrumatix7790 I love my physical synths to much too use RC. I will try those strings when my Roland Sonic Cell arives. I think this must be a good one too.
I literally have every single expansion card made for this machine with an R8M. I should get an R8 just to round it all out.
Absolutely! Sequencer seems to be nice
That's awesome. I hope to find some cards . A friend is selling me his
@@AudioPilz Have been using an r8 MK2 and can confirm. Super intuitive and fun.
You're little demo sessions always sound so good. To me it confirms that a lot of the magic of music doesn't come from the boxes but from the hands manning the knobs ;)
Thank you so much!
4:51 damn the new Future Sound of London single sounds great
Thanks!
Paul Hardcastle called and wants help on his new single, "20"
It is all news report samples from 2020 and people thought "19" was kind of a bummer of song...
"ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba Bad Gear, ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba Bad Year"
A hit record ;)
Yes.
Seriously though are we going to talk about how killer the tracks he made for this video are? Like what is this crazy prog jazz polyrhythmic metric modulation drum solo madness starting at 1:27? If you made a Patreon and shared your full tracks, I would join it in a heartbeat.
Thanks! Roland really upped the demo track game on this one (I'd take the Patreon money, tho - coming soon;)
Ahh...memories. My band had an R8M back in the 90s and we loved it. The Dance card was certainly the one to have, as the 909 sounds were super in vogue in pop music. I rebought one back in the early 2000s and used it for lots of commercial and film soundtrack work. The 909 sounds used in combination with the Jomox MBase were great, as well as the same for the 808 sounds in the "Electronic" card. One cool trick is that you can use pitch bend on all of the drum sounds to create "Drum and Bass" loops just using an external sequncer. Bravo, and enjoyed the demo at the end for sure. Was that "Jazz Brush?" Bravo and Danke!
Thanks for posting. It was the Dry Kit in the end
It just blows my mind how efficiently you set-up, link, use and record with all these different tools most people find bad and make enjoyable music every time... I've had my own current set-up for a few months and don't even have it up and running hahaha
Thanks! I've been setting up and tearing down complex setups for a living multiple times a day so I'm kinda used to that
I bought R-8M after watching this video!
Fortunately, I was able to purchase the ROM cards "DANCE (909)" and "Electric (808)" for about $80 each!
It sounded really great!
I would like to thank AudioPilz for introducing me to this machine.
Nice!!!
Keep up the new format, think I'm not the only person who would love to see a quick jam after the bad gear outro.
Thanks for the feedback! Marvel-Style!
You're totally right! I loved that little jam at the end!
Nice - reminds me of the late 90's sitting in my friends studio as he made weird industrial techno.
We need more of that now!
Your jams this week make it nearly impossible to not like the R8M, excellent job!
Thanks!
So excited every time I see an upload from you!!
And the r8m sounded fine to me! Love the individual outs.
Happy to hear that!
For 1990, having a drum module with 8 outs and a TON of sound options (with 3 expansion slots) was awesome. This was long before the term DAW was a thing. Having 8 simultaneous outputs for drums saved 8 tracks of tape when recording and sync'ing your drum machine to something like an 8 track reel to reel (6 tracks, plus FSK/timecode and a guard track). We tried to keep as many tracks as possible virtual to avoid using up precious analog tracks.
Not exactly simpler times ;)
Apparently Trent Reznor used the original Roland R8 on the Downward Spiral as well as sampled drums on Akai Samplers.
Good to know. I admire Trent
This is one of my favorite modules! Great tracks you created.❤
Thanks!
My dad had one of these when I was a kid. He must still have it knocking around somewhere. TO THE ATTIC!
Too good for being locked in the attic!
This show is a blessing! I can't wait for your new uploads! Stay awesome!
Thank you so much!
That snare has more gate than Brandenburg.
Really lulzed about that one!😂
@@AudioPilz 😉
Roland Never Ceases to amaze with their bad gear
...that actually kicks some butt;)
yeah, and even all their cheap gear they produced back in the day still sounds good aswell, not only highend stuff. Like the m-vs1 vintage synth rompler, and the jv1010
That Jurassic Bad Gear logo needs to be a sticker!!!!
Great idea, thanks!
Amazing as always!
Thank you
love the toms, and those hihats, amazing
I agree!
I love my R8M! I splashed out on the 808 & 909 cards and they're punchy as hell - the 12bit samples give it the same gritty tone as an Akai S950 and the humanise/randomise setting livens up hastily-programmed patterns. Multiple outs too!
Great instruments!
The Roland manual claims they are 16 bit... but maybe they are 12 bit with compression?
As someone who likes programming synths as much as jamming, I like the idea of “gear finds a way.”
ex: Emu Morpheus, all of my FM synths, etc.
Best Jeff Goldblum quote!
Love it! Great unit with excellent sounds. I have an R-5 and still think it's an incredible unit. The drum jam at the end of the video is great!
Thanks! Classic demo song!
What a cool flashback to hear that sounds and demo songs again. Can't believe that the demo at the end felt "so realistic" back then. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! It's also funny that we try to make real drums sound as artificial as possible;)
Sounds absolutelly awesome, such pleasure to hear thoose really carefully selected and well threated samples. No boring overcompression and liveless fake punchiness I hear everyday in modern music / tracks.
Yeah, it's interesting that those dated samples can be a breath of fresh air
Killer episode. You really showed what is possible with the R-8M.
Thank you!
I love the drum jam out at the very end! This thing sounds amazing.
OMG I love this channel!!! Such a great concept and execution. Hilarious. Great jams.
Thank you so much!
The tropical jam!!!!! R8M State
That was the name of the DAW session ;)
i see what you did there
I had an R8 for a few years, quite a nice kit and good cards, great sequencer. My favorite thing was the live edit slider, which let you record in stepped automation like velocity or pitch (great for hi hats) or I think even changing the sample assignment. Almost a direct ancestor of elektron's parameter locks.
I missed that one on the rack unit
Can you say how it compared to the Yamaha RX5? I bought one, and always wonder if I would have a nicer time sequencing if I had the R8.
That was one of the best jams on the channel yet ! I have been watching since nearly the beginning, and this is really an awesome channel, very different from the rest of the crowd.
Thank you so much!
Always a bless to see these videos as a notification
Thanks for watching!
That snare is absolutely massive.
YUGE!!!
Am I alone in wondering what it would sound like if you played all the bad gear intros including the "welcome to..." together all at once in some giant arnie-moby chorus?
Yep, thought so :D
Welcome to Bad Intros, the show about combining ectomorph US dance artists and Austrian body builders

an upload notification from my new favourite channel!
Happy to hear that!
Cool episode thank you ! Those Akai strings were so great !
Thanks! 950 rulez
It would take me at least half an hour just to get some sound out of that, massive respect as always
Thanks!
I had an R8 for a few months when it was new - a music teacher lent it to me. Having had a TR-707 before, I loved this. It had the pattern-based UI Roland was famous for, the pads were pressure-sensitive, the sounds were great. I had the "jazz brushes" memory card, something that was unthinkable a few years before due to the RAM requirement. I can't imagine using a rack version of it, at that point I'd rather have had a sampler (which I did have, a W30). Btw, there is tons of great editing in your videos! I wonder how long it takes you to do all of that. I have to watch it on PC to so I can rewinid/pause and catch all the visual jokes.
Thanks for watching!
OMG this is one of the best episodes of BG! At least musically :) Dude you're fantastic!
Thank you so much!
That snare in your intro sing is explosive :)
Pure dynamite!
Werdict... you are a genius!
Senks!
R8 is truly an all time favorite!
Such punchy sounds
Yeah, punch for days!
Your jams are spot on!
Thanks!
that eclectic 90s rainforest song you did was incredible haha, love the r8 and the r8m
Thank you so much!
@@AudioPilz that shakuhachi sound is from the emulator ii I believe? classic enigma vibes lol
I had an R-5, and my good friend had an R-8. Great line of machines if you dig into the sounds a bit and tweak things
Loved the R8m - pro sounds!
The R8 soundset is my favorite bunch of drum samples from a single unit. I'm not a big fan of 80s retro revival or synthwave at all, but I use those samples on everything.
Super versatile unit!
Another great vid. I liked the sound of it even if dated. You certainly look like you had enjoyed tinkering with it!
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
Please tell me you're making an album soon! I'd buy it in a heartbeat! your beats are insane dude!
Thank you so much. Working on it!
I had the R-8 and sampled all the sounds in the highest quality possible and I still use them!
Great sample library!
I have owned one since forever. Originally bought to go with a Pad 80.
Also owned a Yamaha RM50.
Still use the R8M for latin percussion via stereo out.
You can easily spend more on the Electronic card than the machine itself.
Yeah, those cards are quite expensive!
@@AudioPilz . I've never bothered with the cards. They don't really do much that you can't achieve yourself with some braincurdling menu-diving. The sonic capabilities are well stashed away, which was standard midi rack practice back then.
As a percussion module, it's more than adequate.
WHOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!! That DJ PREMIERE LINE ALMOST MADE ME FAINT !!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT VIDEO @!!!!!!!!!! 😎😎😎🎵
Thank you so much!
this is the best channel! I love it!
Thanks!
yeah, for the rack space it takes up its kinda cool, i think if you were on a budget and needed drum sounds it would be handy. 80 euro seems ok. The feel feature would be nice for live jams.
Feel feature is great!
At first I thought I had Crash Bandicoot soundtrack playing in another tab. It took me a while to understand you chose a very loud and rhythmically rich background music.
thumbed up nonetheless
That music is so grotesque. Had to use it in that way
I thought I was having a cooler-than-usual panic attack
Excellent as usual
Thank you!
This channel has the best videos ever on the entirety of CZcams.
Thank you so much!
I was like "wait, I've never heard this Delerium track before," and then there was lion sex. This is the weirdest timeline, but.. did I just buy an R-8M on Reverb? Dammit.
Kitties like to play ;)
Wow that Drawn Together reference.
Dumpy the Wasteman!!!
your videos are so cool, still waiting for the kaossilator pro video haha
Thanks! Those things are quite costly around here. I'm on it!
That programming at the end was awesome!🎹🎧💫😎👌👍
Thanks!
The zoom in at 3:17 was legendary.
EPIC!
Love the snare
Weapon grade snare drum
Wow that drum medley at the end clearly shows you know how to shred on IRL drums IRL!!!!! Nasty!!!! 🙌🔥🔥🔥
It was one of the factory demos, TBH. Great stuff!
I was feeling that jam around 3:33
Kind of a Psychic TV/Fred Gianelli vibe! Very cool.
Thanks!
Why is this bad gear? What a snare! Would you mind making a soudpack? Btw where is the gold chain?
Probably because the UI is awful. That seems to be a major factor for the a lot of the hate for most "bad gear", more than how it sounds.
Sample packs coming soon!
@@AudioPilz jeah!!! Ich zahle in Wieselburger, Schwechater oder Ottakringer...
1) bad in the context of this series was always 'in the opinion of the internet'
2) mainly because rompler sound modules are kinda completely obsolete, and the ui is..... not
goldbaby included R8 808 sounds in an old (2010-2012 i think) sample pack of rompler 808s. i know this because i love using them (and the kawai XD5's) in place of "better" 808 samples, when i'm just in the mood for some extra plastic. i would definitely like getting samples of its other sounds though!
I could swear the track at 4:50 was something 808 State put out. (Fun fact - they used the R-8 on most of their early 90's releases)
An amateur imitates, a pro steals;)
@@AudioPilz LOL! czcams.com/video/7Y9SYNWkuow/video.html (actually one of my favorite old-school trax, if I do say so myself).
Interesting, very creative project!
Thanks!
Outro solo is a real nice touch 👌🏼
They obviously paid the right guys for the demo tracks
It's micro timing on the R8 which allows more of a "human" shuffle. People swear by it but overpriced old gear as per modern times. Your videos are top 😁
Thanks!
That's actually a long-running urban myth. The timing cannot be used as a modulation destination, neither on the R8 nor on the R8m. It was possible to do it manually though on the R8's sequencer by changing the timing ever so slightly using the data slider.
Dated or not, I kinda like it. I get an old Ministry vibe, an that's ok by me.
Love Ministry!
The video w the neon dolphins on reverse and the lions making sexx was a true masterpiece
Thank you so much!!!
That end track is sounds like what plays in your head when you stop at Rainforest Cafe on the way home from Burning Man.
That's the spirit!
The R8 is Aphex Twin's 808 on SAW85-92, go buy these !
Good to know!
was about to post the same thing!
no, the Electronic card that sells for like 100$ is Aphex Twin's 808 on the R8
Dude, I don't care if it sounds dated! Those are some sexy drum samples!
People would still dance to this ;)
i had this thing... i always loved the high-hat.. they always sounded really nice and alive..
Great cymbals!
By now you should understand that I love your videos my dude
I highly appreciate it!
The final bonus drum solo is approved by the Creative Prodikeys demonstrator.
"This is Lock and Loll!"
...called tomtoms!
@@AudioPilz lock and loll is very simple, just 4 counts
It's a brave man that throws in a shakuhachi sample ;-)
Those who dare...;)
this is not 'Bad Gear' . It is actually an awesome unit.
Can't it be both ;)
Great video again thanks! Roland thanks for all your “badgear”.
Thanks for watching!
I hate it when companies put branding on their devices like "dual cassette" or something I know it has dual decks I have eyes
It's just marketing (but I understand you)
@@AudioPilz I can understand stickers that easy peel off but i mostly hate it when they etch it into the device. it looks tacky.
I'd rather have it all be decals or stickers than be permanent, because at least i can goo gone and it's cleaner
INTEL INSIDE
Did anyone ever build a midi user-friendly front end for all these modules?
I bought one off of ebay about a decade ago and at the time, the SN-R8-10 (Dance) card, I believe, was the rarest and most expensive card! If I remember correctly, it cost almost as much as the unit itself!! It was so hard to find! The others seemed more common.
I also have a RAM card, the 4 (Electronic) and the 9 (Power Drums USA).
And I remember when I first got the dance card, I couldn't access it and I forget how I was able to use it finally. Though I loved this machine, I think my favorite drum machine though was the Kawai R50e.
Holy Christ your content is insane!!
Thank you so much!
4:52 Theme song for hip cop drama. Love it!
Yeah, stoner cops!
Consider the Alesis Airsynth - just try to get a useable sound for the intro from that pseudo-theremin tchotchke. I dare you.
I would have to make an intro about failing to do this ;)
I had never touched the R8M Module version, but i have the R8 drummachine still at my studio and i love it
R8 is a total classic. It has the feel;)
Top gear, top video dude x
Thank you !
For years the Roland R8MK2 was my drum machine. i couldn't afford a mighty Akai MPC3000 that everyone else was using and i got made fun of at a studio once(i remember those things!!! Lol) . later i got a MPC2000xl and today i have MPC Live. and as dated as the sound i use many samples for the R8. some of them are pretty cool i think.
The OG R8 is legend!
like a dinosaur, the drums sound huge! still a better drummer than Lars Ulrich :P
T-Rex style!
Although to be fair I bet you wish you had Lars’ bank balance
@@DVDFRMN complete sellout is a bigger fail
8:01? awww that sweet, sweet ad revenue ;)
great content, great humor, keep it up
Oh, you noticed;) Thank you so much!
that solo at the end holy hell lol you could probably make some sick old school DNB with this thing
Roland took them demo somgs quite seriously
