In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to Disturbed's cover version of the classic Sting song If I Ever Lose My Faith In You. I very much enjoyed their treatment of this song...I think it fits the band's sensibilities and aesthetic well. Enjoy!

Sting's original seems a pedestrian love song to me. In this one, the singer counts off all his disillusionments, all the things that have failed him, things he can't believe in anymore. And then, the music gets triumphant at the end, repeating "If I ever lose my faith in you"...as people look at themselves in the mirror. Disturbed transformed this lightweight pop song into an anthem of believing in yourself. Maybe you need to watch the video to get that...I'm not sure the arrangement alone makes it clear. But I find this version of the song ultimately uplifting despite all the disillusionment.

Been a fan of Disturbed since the 90s. David's singing prowess is nothing new. but always excites. I think the best thing about this cover to me is that the Sting version was more of a personal thing with his lover. This one is somehow a bit more. Like about losing faith in humanity.

I love your interactive (almost ... bordering on intrusive) approach to analyzing the music!!! Please keep injecting your higher-level, intellectual comments. Are there any plans to expand the scope of the music you analyse, Doug? I mean, besides Opeth, Jinjer and Epica, there are way less-known bands whose music happens to be tagged as extreme metal that have been scarcely addressed at all despite their music sets them apart musically, to the point of being unique.
I brought this up a couple of times before, but there is quality music outside the pure prog tag: Ne Obliviscaris, Persefone, Therion, Quo Vadis, Draconian, Virgin Black, Stream Of Passion, Wilderun, Amorphis, Anathema, A (Anonymous Confederate Ensemble), Be'lakor, Insomnium, Into Eternity, Swallow The Sun, Moonspell, The Gathering, Haggard, Green Carnation, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth, Saturnus, Trees Of Eternity... and I could go on.
The thing is I fear that this big chunk of music is going to be neglected (as it always has been/is), be it in favour of more mainstream music or the more typical prog music. I don't want to be a nuisance here from expecting something which actually isn't planned to happen.

I think it's a mistake to inject power into this tune. We already have Nickelback, but I guess they didn't cover it. There's a much sweeter cover of this song by Laith Al-Deen you should check out. He's a German-speaking musician based in Europe, but he recorded this one in English. Far superior, IMO, to the way Disturbed does it. I don't have the ear or the theory knowledge to know for sure whether Laith changes keys on us from Sting's original, but it sounds like he quietly takes it down a peg and gives it a lovely soul-inflected vocal. I love this tune, too, and hate to see it butchered into distortion, but that's just my taste.
I really like your commentary on popular music. It's thoughtful and stays away from the bombast that some other commentators (such as I) seem unable to resist.
