How is Kawhi Leonard not even brought up in this video when he's the one who started this trend by sitting out most of the 2017-18 season and going AWOL from the team and then trying to force a trade to LA in the summer? Spurs got pennies on the dollar from Toronto thanks to him saying he'd only play for LA after sitting out the season.
Great point and while Kawhi hasn’t done that since he was traded from the Spurs, it seems like he only plays when he wants to. I’m not saying his reported injuries aren’t legitimate because I’m sure they are. However, I think he’s definitely milking them. Players who have the injury history that Kawhi has usually are less effective because of it. Kawhi, on the other hand, looks just like the two-time Finals MVP superstar he was in San Antonio and Toronto every time he plays. That leads me to believe that his injuries are not as serious as they’re reported to be and that he basically decides when he wants to play.
@@johngittings4673 The Spurs told him he has a degenerative knee condition and he didn't want to believe it. Which is probably where the static started. I hated him trying to paint the Spurs as rushing him back though when they tried to officially shut him down for the season and then his camp went and told ESPN Kawhi would be back in a couple of games. It was right before a big ESPN game against either OKC or Golden State, I forget which.
The saddest part is, I don't even see kids idolizing NBA players anymore. With everyone requesting a trade, stars don't stay long enough with a franchise in a particular city for people to form a connection with that star. Odds were always slim, but it seemed like all of my friends wanted to make the NBA at some point because stars like Carmelo had that influence over us.
Kids shouldn't be idolizing randos anyway lol. Especially ones that are just playing a child's game for a living.

Jimmy left because he knew he wasn't going anywhere with Embid and Simmons. They're lazy, injury prone, lack mental and physical toughness. As big as those two are they should be DOMINATING in their position and they don't. Embid last year whined and cried to get a regular season MVP award, then after getting it, quit on his team in the Eastern Conference Finals. Simmons has basically been in street clothes more than on the court since Jimmy left Philly. And Harden has become a team hopper who whines and pouts and quits when he doesn't get his way, a regular season player who constantly falls short in the playoffs.
Sometimes it is the PLAYERS that are the problem and not just management.

Dame has never had a real shot in POR based off that roster construction.
They did the right thing. They absolutely did NOT owe it to Dame to trade Scoot (and Sharpe and more picks) for a mid upgrade like Anunoby or Derozen. Which is the kind of deal that was being offered. Just like how they don't owe it to Dame to give him to Miami for scraps.

Dame was never loyal. He was always about the max paycheck. All these years he gladly took supermaxes while his team underperformed.

Actually Harden did not give it his all when he played for the Nets his second year. Numerous games you can see him showing little effort and not hustling just begging for the team to trade him. Kyrie actually gave it his all when he played, but that was when he played.
It's appalling just how often players quit on the floor and get away with it in the NBA. (Vince Carter refusing to RUN on the court with the Raptors after his trade demand may be the most pathetic example of all and of course they got nothing for him.)
And the media just keep saying Kyrie is the problem…

It's hard to feel too bad for teams when they cut players without even a heads-up or a discussion if they want to. They also make hundreds of millions of dollars every year so they're fine, even if they don't have any team success.
That’s not how AD’s situation came about. He let Pelicans know that he wasn’t going to sign an extension and then requested a trade. He was willing to play after he recovered, but it was the PELICANS who sidelined him until they were fined by the league.
There is this NBA rule that could go against Harden its just it never have been used before cause it be terrible for the player
Something similar happened in US history. Woodrow Wilson's VP, Thomas Marshall, was urged to forcibly assume Presidential powers when Wilson became incapacitated. He was left in the dark about the severity of Wilson's condition, but he didn't want to forcibly assume power as it would've set a precedent. With the Sixers and Harden, this rule has never been used before so the Sixers could set precedent if they wanted to, but that opens the floor for other teams to do it too in the future.
I just want to clarify the rule for those still scratching their heads: the Philadelphia 76ers, by rule, can retain James Harden's free agency rights IF he does not play a game within the first 30 days of the 2023-24 NBA season. In other words, he will NOT be a free agent at the end of the season, and will have sat out for nothing.
It will be completely up to the Sixers whether or not they wish to renounce Harden's free agency rights next summer if this plays out. If not, James might need to "suck it up" and play the 2024-25 season in Philly on a qualifying offer just to finally get free from his obligations.
This is not a new rule, and has always applied when a player is in the last year of their contract. Part of the reason it is referred to as a "contract year." 🏀📜💰

So if Damian Lillard came out and said he would never play for a franchise with his GM running it and they used that clause to release Dame would you say the same thing🤔 considering that Damian is literally the only bright spot of Portland. If a player is unhappy why keep them on the team it’s not like there gonna do anything . If a player is unhappy 99.9 percent of the time it’s because the team isn’t willing to do anything to help them win now there are cases where some players just bail but I don’t think that clause is the answer maybe surround the player with talent 🤷♀️

The only similarity between him and Harden is the request for a trade to a specific team,that move makes the GM's work way too difficult. Because of that the acquiring team would give you peanuts instead of something good.
In general I think players became too greedy, players empowerment is a good thing, but not to the point of controlling and deciding everything. Owners gain a lot from them, but even the opposite is true. Meanwhile the fans have to see all this drama and sometimes save some money to see their fav players and them failing on the same fans with load management and BS like that
GMs/Owners are too scared to force players to stick-out their contract & play for them--the team; NBA is too scared to hold players accountable; It's really hard to prove that a player is purposefully holding-out or throwing games/their play to force a trade. Etc.

This is a bit of revisionist history. Anthony Davis didn't ask out and sit out of games, he was on an expiring contract and basically told FO that when it does expire that he will walk out this summer. He didn't sit out games, in fact, he was healthy and got DNPs instead with the intention of lowering his market value.

Agreed. No "player" should be able to request (I mean force) 3 trades in 2 years. We need a rule that decreases the value of your contract with each trade request. 10% for the 1st, 20% the 2nd, 40% for the 3rd and so on & so forth. So harden opts IN to his contract to play for Philly, and then decides he wants to be moved and keep his money. I'm hoping the new cba rules will at least get a better grip on this situation. I'd be frustrated too if I was in Lillard's position.
It's in the Trailblazer's best interest to trade Lillard if they're going to rebuild, but think of it like honoring your old man's last request. "We will (try to) trade you, is there any team you'd like to go to?"

Yeah I don’t really think it’s good for the league. At the same time though, I see both sides. If what James said is true, then his long term friend lied straight up to his face and he even took a pay cut because of his trust in his friend.
But James has done this for three teams now, I don’t think a player should be allowed to constantly get out his contract because he doesn’t like it there. Look at Dame, for a decade the man did everything he could for Portland, and when they drafted Scoot, I think he finally thought it’s close to impossible to win in Portland, due to the front office not wanted to compete for a Championship. With James, yes he played great in the first two games of that Celtics series and they would’ve probably been swept had he not went for forty, but as the second best player on the team, having less than ten points in a elimination game is horrible. @@geronimopratt7976 he requested to be traded from the Warriors to the 76ers because the team was losing and he would’ve rather play in his hometown. allegedly Chamberlain was either promised part of ownership or to coach the team for the 76ers. the owners said no and he requested a trade back to the west coast partially because of his attraction towards white women and fulfill his indulgent lifetime. Kareem even requested out of Milwaukee. and asked to be traded to either New York (his hometown) or LA (where he lived during his college years). the difference between these two and James is that they delivered on their promises. they brought their respective teams to the finals and won the chip. James hasn’t done that. come on bro…..use context….it’s right there. also those guys wanted out for personal reasons. Chamberlain wanted out to fulfill his dream of being treated like a white man. and Abdul-Jabbar wanted to be in an area that reflects his own personal beliefs. Harden wants another no lose situation and when it doesn’t work out, he quits like a baby.

Tbh, the NBA don't need to step in. These stars forget that, in order to win, the winning culture and the chemistry should be there on their new team. Only the AD traded have worked so far, but teams that respect the culture and the process end up winning, just like Miami, Milwaukee or Denver, even if they don't match their opponents talent.
Kawhi was successful as well pulling it off. I know people tend to have mixed opinions on who was in the right or wrong, Kawhi or the spurs. Either way he sat out, forced a trade and won the very next season.
I feel like stuff like what AD and Kawhi did encourages players to attempt these types of things. Considering they were able to get what they want, win a championship, retain their value if not increase it and end up on the team they wanted to be on.

in the case of harden, it seems like he is not contented on the team he joined in the past 3 years. maybe if he didn't have issue with houston and brooklyn, people will view this sixers mess as an anomaly or an outlier. at least for lebron, even though he is been with different teams and a LeGM, he is finishing his contract obligations.

The main problem with the NBA is 100% the refereeing - I didn't stop watching due to certain 'stars' being primadonnas, but I did due to continuous missed/atrocious calls.
Teenagers who think they're worth more than they actually are, and having that big of a say on trades can be the second biggest problem.

Players have taken this route more commonly now. These guys sign super maxes and then request a trade if they hit free agency so they get all the money.
Players should not be allowed to request a trade until atleast 50% of the duration is complete especially max contract players. It's unlikely it would come but I like it

To me the most concerning part is that the drama which has very little to do with the game of basketball is becoming more popular than the actual sport. And the drama itself is heavily biased and often fabricated to suit one narrative. As for the star players asking out - as long as they are the employees they really shouldn't be receiving any pampering from the league, teams or fans. They are paid a lot of money to play at the highest level for consumers entertainment and by refusing to play they are actively damaging basketball aspect of the NBA.
I wonder why the league doesn't have any tools to punish unprofessional behavior like that. E.g. post-trade ban i.e. you can demand trade, but in the new club you must sit down for 6 months.

As in any other business and industry.
They should change the contracts, yes, in case the player doesn't play or doesn't come to trainings of his own free will, in order to force the team to trade him, he doesn't have to be paid at all for that period.
If the player wants to terminate the contract or requests a trade, the team does not have to pay the rest of the contract.
And, if it's the other way around, if the team fires you on its own, then the team pays everything according to the contract.

It’s good in the short term. Attention, media, sales. But bad in the long term. It’s impossible for a fan base to truly care about a team that is filled with players that have little to no devotion to winning.
The NBAPA sought more control and the owners fearing a lockdown capitulated. Now its out of control and its hard to put the genie back in the bottle.
Maybe we're just looking at the problem backwards. It's not up to the players to be better human beings (they are what they are) it's up to the teams to figure out who to take.
Guys like Harden or Kyrie, I would NEVER want them on my team if I was running a franchise - well, unless I just want to sell tickets, but we'll imagine I want the title.
Harden is a huge player, but he just can't win a title for a team. Because his style of play doesn't suit the playoff, because we know we can't count on him since overnight he can ask for a trade... In short, he's not a guy who wins a title.
And he never won. And there is no injustice there.
Who are the champions of the last years? Milwaukee, Golden State, Denver. Teams that have a star they can count on (rarely hurt, loyal, don't cause turbulence)
The Lakers are really an exception in all of this, and it worked just one year, very special at that.
Solid points, however the Lakers would have likely one that one title in that year or the next, had it not been for the injuries. That being said, don't build franchises on glass cannons! Lol.

all the "small market teams" talk is really irritating to me, as you can see plenty of smaller markets get talent but when you fail over and over it's only fair for a superstar to leave, players dont just leave for no reason, people need to stop feeling sympathy for predatory or poor management

first of all.. organizations have the power to trade, waive or cut players as they see fit, too.. in fact the Front Office doesn't even need the player's consent (unless there's a clause)... so players requesting to be traded is fair game just as well.. and any issues concerning contracts are not the fault of the players but of the NBA's regulation framework..
second of all... the Damian Lillard and James Harden situations are not comparable in the slightest..
Dame is a Free Agent at the end of next season (2023/24).. the Blazers must trade him this offseason, if they want something in return.. Dame knows that and it is why he requested to be traded now.. and of course he's pushing for his preferred destination.. that's within his rights as well.. what he can not do is force the two organizations to come to an agreement on the matter, that makes sense for both of them (and Dame)...
if they can't find a deal.. he can simply play the season in Portland and then take his talents to South Beach as a Free Agent.. which he probably should have done from the start.. because that's what free agency is for..
the James Harden situation is (mostly) just James Harden being James Harden...although I give him the benefit of the doubt of none of us knowing what was said/agreed between him and the Front Office..
that being said... he as well should have just gone into Free Agency... but by exercizing his option and with that setting a non-negotiable price for his services he made it impossible for the Sixers to find a trade.. at least right now.. there is simply no market for him at that price..

Some teams have horrible management. It’s not always on the players. Portland never got Dame sufficient help. NOLA tried with AD but most of his career there they were mid until Bougie showed up. Philly keeps mishandling their situations which is making me look at the Ben Simmons thing differently. Not all ownership are wiling to build rapport with their super stars and that’s an issue and overall bad business. That entitlement won’t get you anywhere. The stars are who pay the bills.
Your history is way off. AD never refused to play. He told the Pelicans that he wasn’t going to resign and he intended to go to the Lakers in free agency. He then told any team he would be traded to that he would be leaving for Los Angeles in the following season making him a yearly rental. The Pelicans and most other teams sit players during trade discussions so as not to risk injury.
I disagree with the take on Dame. Everybody knows the situation he's in. Saying he's gone from loved to hated is inaccurate. Nobody is questioning his loyalty. Both him and the team know trading him is best for each side.

Ion see why clippers wouldn’t trade for him… takes a lot of offensive or ball handling pressure off of PG and Kawhi and might help them avoid getting injured or even if and when they’re out bc of load management or injuries they still have a guy who can keep the offense pretty good and possibly keep them from going on big losing stretches especially if they can replace whatever players they trade to Philly, with 3 and d guys and younger role players or unproven guys with potential who can give them energy off the bench… regardless Philly wouldn’t get a great package for James being on a expiring contract… but PG or kawhi could take over in the playoffs as long as they’re healthy at that point of the season
The NBA makes hella money but theyve been ignoring the fact that superstars are ruining the game on and off the field. Sure it creates drama and views but ultimately it diminishes the quality of the NBA overall. They might not feel it now but its these kinda things that will cost them severely if not addressed now. Its been going on for too long and I thought the new CBA rules limited the players power to do whatever.
I think the NBA tries to be too much like how the transfer windows in association football (the full name of what in America is called soccer) are in the top leagues in Europe like England, Spain, Germany, Italy and kind of France. Every season there has some big name that could be on the move to a big club and there's the occasional transfer saga as well - for example Kylian Mbappe in the recent weeks with his refusal to sign an extension with PSG and willing to go to Real Madrid for no transfer fee (which understandably PSG wants to avoid after pumping so much money into him). This transfer window we've also had the raid of players by Saudi Arabia who have been throwing money left, right and center.
I think it's a shame that players can sit out and not play until their demands are met, but I also think it's a shame how in the NBA, unlike in European football (soccer), player have no saying in trades. If a organization can ship a man to other country for, idk, many years, players should be able to have some power too.

NBA stars want to choose freedom to move and the most money the can earn. Instead of doing what others do, like Lebron. He didn´t sign max contracts but he always played for the team he wanted.
