    About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
    Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

if you get an altitude sensor set to -500m (or a distance sensor set to 0m invert trigger) and set the output to 0.03 and link it to the thruster (or anything which has a ramp up) it will basically just remove the ramp up.

I think it's the weight difference that allows you to get away with no wheels with the space thrusters. Everything else causes too much friction with the ground.

  • @--cook--
    @--cook-- Před 6 měsíci +61

it's important to note that, in conjunction with the light weight of the space thrusters, their thrust is perfectly centered. with the large jet engines, there's the heavier weight to consider, but also the friction that is being added against the ground. because the off-center thrust works like a lever, pushing scrapman's sled into the ground with greater force than with the space thrusters, his speed is reduced.

    • @TlalocTemporal
      @TlalocTemporal Před 6 měsíci +7

It's due to how many points are on the ground, think of it like this. On small craft like the space thruster one, adding wheels will decrease ground friction by about 6 blocks while adding say another 6 to air friction, but air friction has more of an effect on speed. On a bigger craft, it still only adds 6 to air friction while it will remove like 25 blocks of ground friction.

Now that we know that 2 space jets can do it, I want to see him try with the dragon jet again.

I think there's a lot of friction with the ground. Obviously wheels are bad, but maybe try using hoverpads?

Could try hoverpads to take ground friction out of the equation instead of wheels but center of mass and thrust gonna have to be even

What about an operator seat facing up for the space thruster? Its 2 by 2 compared to the cockpit, which is 3 by 2.

I didn’t have a guess for the bigger engine but the small ones I paused before your guess and also assumed 10

so one thing i found out on accident that might help, wheels on their side will be frictionless, im not sure if this is patched though.

the reason why you couldn't do it with 2 jet engines with that design was probably because of the jet engines being both at the back and since there collision box is smaller than there hit box it caused your vehicle to angle up slightly which would both cause more friction and a slight loss to your forward velocity. try putting one of the jet engines in front of the cockpit to evenly distribute the weight and see if that will work
edit: this would also mean that there would be less blocks touching the ground causing friction

7:07 You should try using a flat connector or shield piece near the wheel to cut the aero and keep ground clearance. Idk if it would improve performance but it’s just an idea

You can change to the original rotation of building blocks by going to settings and scrolling down to legacy rotation

now you found that wheels don't matter as much, maybe you could retry the dargon yet and pulse jet (forgot the name), and witht he nez propellor hitbox naybe the props as well

Tip for aerodynamics in small spaces, use the side of the 1x2 shield block. It has the same aerodynamics and weight as the 1x4 wedge, while being half as long. It also cancels the aerodynamics like other regular blocks. The flat connectors also do not affect aerodynamics at all and the flat side of the shield has the same aerodynamics as a wall.
Edit: shield blocks do not have quite as good aerodynamics as the wedge 1x4, but the wedge corner 2x2x1 and potentially the wedge corner 2x2x2. Both are also lighter than the wedge 1x4

Another aerodynamic tip, if you want to fill in a space to remove the aerodynamics of that empty space, use the rounded corner inverted 1x2, being 0.2 kilograms.

I have also made adjustments to your final design for the space thrusters and I managed to get a sonic boom without going from one side of the map to the other.

Day inf of asking for thrust vectoring. Please do a video about thrust vectoring and see if it works in trail makers or not, jets irl like the f22 uses this, and they're the best. Please make it in both atmosphere and in space.
