There is no lawsuit to worry about. (Especially not or the GM.) Who do you think would file a lawsuit? Well established that if you trespass onto the field of play in any sport, they have the right to think they are in danger, thanks to the Monica Seles incident. Players have absolutely LEVELED asshole fans like this, and nothing has ever been done to them. And no lawsuits have been won. Or even had to be defended since any that have been filed have been thrown out pretty much on the first day in court.

Pretty sure the referee/stadium staff can't be held liable due to safety of themselves and the players. If someone jumps on the ice who's not supposed to be there, all bets are off.

I'm not surprised... If someone in the USA can break into your house and then sue you because they tripped on something, then I'd be surprised if he didn't sue for that... Honestly I think that that ref went over board. You can control a fan without headbutting them in the back and risking extreme injury like that.
Good point. Nowadays it is still illegal to jump onto the rink of an NHL game, and presumably still criminal to approach an official in a threatening manner. Hopefully the fan served time.

There was one game I called of a Canadian university game in 2017 when something like this happened. In the opening game of the OUA West quarterfinal between the York Lions and Lakehead Thunderwolves, the Lions had just scored what turned out to be the winning goal with five seconds left in regulation. All of a sudden, a fan who appeared to be drunk managed to sneak his way through a door and onto the ice. For some reason, I referred to him as a lunatic on the air. A couple of the event staff quickly threw him out of the Fort William Gardens once they got a hold of him.
