As much as I love Michael McDonald, this song would not be iconic without the complicated harmonies happening while he's singing. Michael needs them as much as they need him
I’m 67 and a huge fan of The Doobie Brothers and even though this is my favorite song of theirs if I had number 2 through number 10 favorite of theirs they were all early Doobie Brothers prior to Michael McDonald. Go down that early Doobie Brothers rabbit hole. China Grove, Listen To The Music, Clear As A Driven Snow etc etc etc. It’s all great. The Hell’s Angels of all things loved this band. A California thing I reckon.
at least a couple of you have to remember the what's happening episode where they were trying to go to the doobie brothers concert- i don't even think this was the song they played- i'm born in early 70s and i remember my mom playing the shit out of the doibie brothers they had a handful of memorable songs and of course i can't remember any of them as i type this- had to come back to see if y'all remember jesus is just alright and minute by minute
I totally have to disagree that the Doobie Brothers are nothing without Michael MacDonald. They were always an awesome band, and they were even more awesomer when Michael McDonald came along
The Doobies had several hits before Michael McDonald came in after Tom Johnston’s hiatus. MM added another dimension to their sound, but to say they were nothing without them is an opinion born of ignorance about the band.
Completely and utterly untrue. They had 5 Gold and Platinum albums BEFORE McDonald walked in the door. Try and checking out those first 5 albums because they are classics.
Y'all! Wow, this song hits all the feels from the time. The 70's and 80's, when no one cared about culture or skin color or beliefs system. We cared about uniting together for great music and having a good time. No matter the genre of music, we just ALL enjoyed it TOGETHER. I miss those days. Thanks for your reactions and please dive into their catalogue! ❤️
Geri B...Excellent comment! I lived back then, and anyone else who experienced this era agrees that we had the best music. We won't see the likes of it for a long, long time to come. Don't tell me that a lot of the crap churned out today is going to be remembered 50 years from now! Ain't happenin'.
@@jaycorby I second that emotion! We had it all back in the day! The best of Soul, Funk, Rhythm & Blues, Rock, Pop, Disco etc. Real instruments, great players, songwriters and composers, beautiful lyrics and arrangements and (of course) phenomenal singers! I like watching these reaction videos of young people who discover all the great stuff from our generation, and to hear them say something like: "You don't hear this kind of music today!" Well, you can say that again! And you're right Jay, 'our' music will be remembered 50 years from now! Good music will always be good music...

Check out "It Keeps You Runnin' " from the same live-recording (Live On Soundstage 1977) Michael's voice will take you to church on that one! And "Takin' It To The Streets" (live in Santa Barbara 1982 ) is a jam! Good times and great music!
Later on M.M. did a song that featured in a movie called Running Scared, with Billy Christal and Gregory Hines ( now deceased ). It's called Sweet Freedom...a banger for sure!
Being born in 1960 the Doobie Brothers was my first concert(and the first time I smoked weed!) in 1977! The Doobies were my all time favorite band from my teenage years! And still smoke weed to this day! LOL😀 -Oregon Grandma
You probably know Michael McDonald's solo hit "I keep Forgetting" and his huge hit duets with Patti Labelle "On My Own" and with James Ingram "Ya Mo Be There"
Gentlemen the rabbit hole of the dubes Is very deep as deep as the almond brothers which is a whole I think you need to fall into as well may God-bless you and your family my friends
The lyrics actually say, "the wise man has the power to reason away". At one time I thought it was "no wise man" but when you watch the background singers and listen to them, it is "the wise man".
exactly.: he is choosing to "play the fool" and reason away any logic that tells him to accept the truth (that there was never anything between them), lest he experience the emotional devastation of realizing he'd been believing in a fantasy his whole life. Better to go on pretending because what seems to be (his fantasy) is better than noting at all.
This was issued in 1979 when I was 31-years-old, and it's still a banger to me. So good to see you guys remembering this and reacting with such broad smiles how really great it is. Robert, 74, uk.
My two favorite Doobie Brothers songs are Long Train Running and Black Water. Mmm. Sooo good! Makes me wanna dance in my chair right now just thinking about them!❤
Peggy - I get it! Our music and artists were the best! I know every generation feels this way about their own, but the 60s/70s/early 80s were special in a special way for sure. Michael McDonald did a song called Sweet Freedom that was featured in the film Running Scared, with Gregory Hines and Billy Christel ( sic ).
The voice harmonies are fantastic, remember that auto tune wasn't in use until late 90s. These melodies and rhythms push aside issues, and bring us as one. Good review.
Michael Jackson did background vocals in this song & Minute by minute. He loved the song, but didn't want credits. He says he did this all the time. I think MJ was 1 of the 1st times he let his music be sampled by SWV. Not only did he agree to it, but he said he loved them & would not accept any money for it. That's crazy. 🤗...Corey's reactions are ridiculous. He always makes me smile. Stop playin. The Doobie brothers definitely have some hits. Pls react to Minute by minute next. Thx
This song has some classic and highly original lyrics, like "Trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created" and "She had a place in his life; he never made her think twice". And of course, "What a fool believes, a wise man has the power, to reason away." The Doobie Brothers had a very successful career before Michael McDonald, but his unique voice and abilities as a composer deeply changed their careers.
Such a timeless, upbeat groove juxtaposed against tragic lyrics about fooling oneself into thinking a relationship existed when it did not. "She had a place in his life, He never made her think twice." Masterful songwriting!
Great reaction, thank you! And it was cool to see the live version. Michael can really sing. Please do their live version of “Taking It To The Streets.” (Although the studio version is great, too.)
The harmony, vocals, instrumentations, the transitions, just all around 💯 this is that feel good song that makes you dance whether you're 8ys old or 80🔥🔥
Every year the band get together to play at a hospital for free to entertain the patients. They also started their own brand of wine. All the profits go to charity. Great guys!
The Queen of Soul also covered this song in 1980. You'll may want to check out her version. She enjoyed Michael McDonald's artistry and later featured him on her song - Ever Changing Times.
I always love this song from the Doobie Brothers (1978), I was 18!! Yep I'm a lot older now!! Still, even the younger generation often like this song which is brilliant.
I really love watching you gentlemen. Bottom line is that music is music which is open to everyone’s interpretation and hits everyone in a different way ❤
Had a few "shared" LPs with my mom in the early 70s of the Doobie Brothers (pre- Michael McDonald) that got a lot of play in our house (along with my mother's Booker T. and the MGs albums, Three Dog Night, and her personal favorite, Dionne Warwick--eclectic, yes.) These early albums had great hits like "Listen To the Music", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "China Grove", "Long Train Running", and the very laid back "Black Water". You cannot miss with any of these!
Love these guys. Michael & when Kenny joins him on some of the performances I've been lucky enough to see on the internet just makes my heart smile. 🙏🏾✨♥️
I really like how you guys research the chart positions of a song and the awards it might have won. It puts a perspective of how influential or even iconic a song is in music history. Michael wasn’t in the group when they started out. He was doing a lot of other things including doing background vocal for Steely Dan. Skunk Baxter, the guitar player with the shades, was an early member of Steely Dan. Which brings us to Steely Dan. You must, must, must give them a try. I guarantee you’ll love them. The very first time I heard this song in '79, I knew it was headed to #1 and the Grammys.
The Doobie Brothers played at our prom in 1969. Growing up in Northern California was glorious.
