  • Fingerpicking virtuoso, Doyle Dykes, provides us with insight and perspective that once heard, will never be forgotten.
Coming from a heritage of church musicians, learn how Doyle answered God's calling to play guitar at an early age.

I'm a guitar player for 39 years now and I love everything about Doyle Dykes, but there's no such thing as a calling to play guitar. Please keep up the amazing work Doyle!

Mr. Tree, or may I call you Pine? I respectfully disagree. As you may know, Doyle was a pulpit minister before he realized he could, “reach more folks with a guitar than he ever could from a pulpit”. His gift is clearly given him by God. And he’s used it to minister to tens of thousands - many of whom may never have picked up a Bible or stepped inside a church. God can (and does) call His own to do His will and work in whatever way He equips (and calls) them. Please understand that I don’t write this in an argumentative way. I’ve met Doyle several times and can attest that he’s an excellent witness wherever God sends him.

@2centavos I suppose that many people prefer to reserve the word "calling" for those in the ministry. Otherwise you're going to have people being "called" to all kinds of activities. If you water down the word's usage, you might ruin its special meaning.

I play gospel. I'm not the guitarist that. Doyle is. But. I do finger pick.
And enjoy it. I'm not the musician. That others are but I enjoy sitting out on my front poarch. Just making music and singing. Thanks.

Does Dwayne Friend still have that Gretsch Super Chet? I remember him with it way back in, I believe, the early 60's. He had a show called Gospel Guitar which came on late at night.

      THE DUKE.
Yup! Seems his brain is WASHED in the blood of the lamb of God. The most cleansing agent in the entire UNIVERSE!!! That's pretty clean, isn't it??
So cleansing, in fact, that it can "wash" your sins from being red as scarlet to WHITE AS SNOW.

It is very rude when people talk of him as brain washed, why, it was big part of his life and still is, and if that contributed in a way for him to be one of the best finger style guitarist in the world then it must be good religion or at least it worked for him..so let it be, beside, it would br great thinng if religion can influence on people like it did with him. I don't like talk about religion but i like him very much
