In the Victorian era they used to add black to brightly colored paints and dyes as well. They called it “saddening” colors.

Ah yes, I seem (somehow) to have accrued several light polishes, but they always look horrible & chalky on me, so now I know just to add black!! :D Especially as black polish on its own looks a bit too goth / grungy on me, so now I can use it up :)

I love making “Frankenpolishes”! And not just by adding black and white. If I have a pink but need a corally color, I’ll add some orange. Or add some purple and white to blue and get a periwinkle. Color theory is helpful tho; otherwise you can end up with a lot of browns.

When I mix my own shade of nailpolish I love to take blister packaging and a toothpick. I just clip the tip of the toothpick so it is not so very spiky.
Always use toothpicks to remove little stains of nailpolish. They can even soak some acetone to work as a tiny cotton swab without leaving fibres on nailart.
I rub them on nail file so they get form of perfect drawing instruments
Blisters work for my shellac polish. Maybe chemicals of nailpolish will destroy the blisters.
Round blisters from strepsils for throat are great for this purpose. Some vitamins got good blisters, too.
Cleaning blisters with pure alcohol is better as acetone destroys the blister packaging.
You also may use a small plate of porcelain or ceramic or glass or something for eating breakfast eggs if you don't use it for food anymore.

Speaking of re-using orange wood sticks, I even go a step further by just scraping the dried up polish off with the edge of an old metal nail file. Works great since the dried polish flakes off easily so you can use the same stick forever basically 🤷‍♀️

I love doing ombre nail looks where every nail is a lighter/darker shade than the one before it, but sometimes I don't have colors that go together (like I have 5 different blue polishes but their tone isn't the same). mm Dana oh, I have a fun fact for you! If you want blue, just mix cyan and magenta, or if you need red, mix magenta and yellow. These are the true primary colors. You can’t use blue, red and yellow to make every color. Have you ever wondered why you can’t mix a bright green? Blue and yellow make a dark murky green, and adding white makes it a soft pastel. That’s because you need cyan and yellow. You can't make a real pink with red and white, it's just soft red. You need magenta. You can't use deep colors like blue and red to get bright colors like cyan and magenta, but you can deepen up bright colors. We've all been taught wrong and I don't know why.

    • @JasminMiettunen
      @JasminMiettunen Před 3 lety +16

Lady_ _Wytch most people think that because it's what we're taught in school, I just found out a few years ago and it explained so much! Some people think red, blue and yellow are “painting primaries”, but that's because old painters had to use natural dyes, they didn’t have cyan and magenta available. Also, the rainbow acronym included blue and indigo (ROYGBIV) because back then the word blue meant the brighter cyan colour and indigo meant what we think of as a true blue, but now the word blue has started to contain all kinds of shades from cyan and turquoise to indigo and navy. That's another reason for the confusion. Sorry for the second lesson, I was just so happy to find this out myself that I love telling others in case they will be as excited :)

I thought you were going to mix black with clear and make a darkening topper, I've used that to deepen colors before! The actual mixing really transforms the shimmer shades, and it's reigniting my franken-polish desires. Store-bought egg nog is disgusting, my boyfriend likens it to drinking pancake batter, but homemade eggnog is basically liquid custard (eggs, cream, sugar, vanilla). Other alternatives to a silicone mat are plastic container lids (who doesn't have yogurt, sour cream, peanut butter, etc?) or tin foil.

Suggestion to start out counting out drops of your original polish and then add your drop of black, white, whatever, and keep notes of each mix so you can easily re-create your favorites and know what didn't work for future reference. That way you can make an entire bottle of any favorites you discover if you so desire.

I appreciate your extra content and work -- in what is sometimes kind of a dead time of year for new collections. Several times per week during the dark days of December, I can sit down and enjoy your personality, hair, makeup, and commentary. And of course, lots of nail polish talk!! Thank you and happy holidays, however you celebrate (pajamas this year, for sure)!!

Thank you for this tutorial! This is definitely going to expand the options for my manicures without having to buy more bottles. Oh! And classic eggnog is disgusting but if you want to try it, I'd suggest the Silk soymilk eggnog that's often sold at Target. It actually tastes good and comes in a skinny container so there's not too much hanging around if you don't care for it.

  • @doroparker1702

My tip for new years eve is to put a drop of glitter polish into your favourite colour.
Glitter polish in the right colour is so hard to find.
My favourite drink is orange juice with tonic and a hint of bitter lemon.
Maybe I try to add some cranberry for colour.
Bitter lemon is great if your drink got too sweet. You could try it with your mix of ginger ale and cranberry as well. Just a small bit of bitter lemon is enough.

What a fun idea! I would have never thought to do this. And all of the different colors you created were beautiful! Also, is it just me, or did the added black make the shimmer in the Kokie shade more intense?
