    Hey guys! Today I am sharing another video for my Nail Polish 101 series - how to fix your old thick gloopy top coat and make it usable again! You can apply this technique with thick base coat or nail polish as well :) I've got two different methods - one works best for old thick top coat (or base or polish), and the other is a great way to save SLIGHTLY thick products! Have you tried either method?
    Remember to NOT use acetone or nail polish remover in nail polish, base coat, or top coat :)

    When buying nail polish thinner, look at the ingredients! Make sure that the main ingredient is ethyl acetate or butyl acetate.
    The first one I bought was methyl acetate and I ruined three (very expensive) polishes before I realized. Methyl acetate will thin your polishes, but since it‘s not an ingredient in nail polishes, it changes the formula. The polishes will dry differently.
    Ethyl acetate is actually used as a solvent in nail polishes so adding it will only thin the polish and not change its chemical composition.

      Yes, I'm pretty sure (like 99% sure) I saw they said you could add alcohol to it but not only did it make the glitter polish thicker after a few days, the color came off the glitter and it became a gray mess! It got way too thick after a short amount of time, same with top coat. Good but not happy. Probably won't buy again for a while to expensive 20$ for one polish that doesn't last a year... No thank you)

    • @melpinay
      @melpinay Před 3 lety +9

      @@Amanda-kw1vi if you can find a time Kelli or Simply ever said that you could add alcohol, I'd be keen to know because I've never heard of that. Nail polish glitters need to be solvent stable for nail polish so if non-solvent stable glitters are used (or non-nail polish ingredients are added), then the glitters can degrade with the glitters bleeding or taco-ing. If you added alcohol and the glitters degraded, then sounds like alcohol wasn't a part of the suspension base of the nail polish.

  • @shadokat
    @shadokat Před 2 lety +1

    This is such a fantastic video and I want to thank you for showing it to us! There was one thing I noticed that has given me a problem in the past. When you cleaned your bottle threads, you did it with a cotton ball. While this gets the job done, I noticed on your bottle the same thing that I get if I use a cotton ball for this purpose. Fluff. Cotton strands. They stick to the bottle neck and then get attached to the cap when you put on the cap. This has been a problem for me because those little threads can get pulled inside of the product and make their way to the brush. I've had a cotton ball leave so much fluff that I had it in the polish every time I used it. And we all know what a nuisance it is to have to get a piece of fluff out of a top coat especially. To avoid this problem I don't use cotton balls. I use those makeup rounds they sell for removing eye makeup. Those don't shed nearly as many fluff threads. If they do leave a couple it's easy to pull them off before you put the cap back on the bottle. You can avoid fluff altogether if you use a makeup sponge to clean off the bottle threads. They are cheap and it's easy to set one aside in a ziploc with your manicure kit. Both makeup rounds and sponges are better than cotton balls. If you go back and look at the video you'll see how many fluff threads are stuck to the bottle after using the cotton ball to clean it. I'm not trying to upstage you; I just wanted to share my method for getting a cleaner cleanup of the threads. Everything else in this video is perfect. Thank you for taking the time to teach us!

      Using a makeup sponge is a good idea. Cotton won't leave bits on the bottle if it is completely soaked in polish remover.

    I get frustrated when the last bit of topcoat can’t be reached by the brush. I usually save this and tip it into a new bottle with a bit of thinner as I hate wasting topcoat. I also am pretty militant about wiping the bottle neck of all my polishes as this can so easily stop the bottle closing (especially with glitters) and dry up the polish. How many times have I nearly cried when someone says they had to throw a lovely polish away because “it went bad and dried up” thinner is an absolute lifesaver. Fab video! Love from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 💕💕

I love your idea on saving the bottle once you've used 1/2 of it & combining a fresh half. It has always seemed like such a huge waste. I'm curious if you have any other tips on how to be more environmentally friendly when doing your nails? E.g. how to reuse empty bottles? How to dispose of acetone? Any ingredients that are especially "not green"? Is there any reusable substitute for cotton pads? (You used to make videos about peel-off nail polish -- is that still around?) I know that doing my nails is not a very environmentally conscious hobby, but I'm on the lookout for ways to improve 😅 thanks so much for all your great content!

      I don't know the answer to a lot of your questions, but you can definitely still buy peel-off base coats!! I've got the UNT Ready for Takeoff, I believe that's the most commonly used one. I don't think it's an automatical environmental friendly option though, you save acetone and cotton pads, but the manicure doesn't last as long, which means you'll use more nail polish in the long run (if you don't want naked nails). But that's something you'll have to consider yourself...

I couldn’t do that though, although I don’t have pets I’m an animal lover and I’d be devastated to kill any wildlife that might wander into my garden and mistake it for water.

I don't know what the formulation is, but the ingredient percentages for those polishes are unique in what gets lost and to what degree. The Seche Vite thinner fixes them the right way.
