Split Log Stove Cooking - Pancake Bacon Dippers

- On this very windy day I stopped trailside to have a quick lunch of pancake bacon dippers. Due to the wind I opted to use a split log stove instead of having a fire on the ground. The area I was in had a lot of debris and duff on the forest floor and with the strong winds I didn't want to risk starting a forest fire. The split log stove worked great in these conditions and left zero footprint where it burned.
The stove was made from a less than ideal piece of spruce wood. The log was slightly damp and some of it was beginning to rot. Despite the low quality wood the stove still performed great. I was able to fry up my bacon then cook the pancakes without trouble. Due to the moisture in the log, one half of the stove burned much more efficiently than the other half (as you can see at the end of the video). I believe the half that didn't burn so well had more moisture and was likely on the underside of the leaning tree the log was cut from. A good dry piece of wood is much more ideal for a split log stove but this was a good demonstration that the concept works even if the log isn't perfect.
The pancake bacon dippers were a delicious lunch. I like this meal because it is easy to pack and simple to cook. Bacon, just add water pancake mix, and some maple syrup is all that's needed for this meal.
Thank you to everyone who watches! God bless and happy trails. - Zábava
Further proof that you’re never too old to learn something new.
I’ve been (I call it woodcrafting) since 1972 and I learned 3 things from this video. Thank you 😊
Thanks for watching!
Yes, me too. What a simple and easy method of making a swedish fire!
The video is so complete, no explanation required. I like this style.
This reminds me of an episode of Adventure Time, in which Jake is making bacon pancakes and singing... "Bacon Pancakes. Makin' bacon pancakes. You put the bacon in the pancakes and you're makin' bacon pancakes."
Can almost smell the wood smoke ,bacon and pancakes. Thanks for the video
I like these type of videos, where the host isn't constantly talking or have their face right against the camera. Nice and slow paced.
Silence is golden
🤫
Your kids are gonna love your baconater-pancakes!!!
I’ve learned to just like the video before it fully starts…because I know it’s going to be a good one.
Much appreciated! Thank you for the support.
Love hearing the wind in the trees. It's the best sound ever, IMO. Pancakes look yummy, btw!
It sure is a great sound. Sadly the audio in the video really doesn't do it justice. Thanks for watching!
Great choice of fire for such windy conditions. I like those pancake treats hooey with a little bowl of syrup to dip them in😁
Thankful that you just kept the wind.
I've been backpacking and camping for 50 years....how have I NEVER seen pancakes like this??????? Brilliant!
Wow super windy day but I totally loved the end result 🤤🤤🤤😁🤙🤙🤙
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the breakfast idea. Going to make these for my granddaughter the next time she comes for the weekend.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I so want to go camping with you !
Nice. I love the sound of the wind in the trees.
Meditation at its best! Your videos are great for daily stress management. Thank you! 👏🏽
Always love new vids from this channel

Love the simplicity of your videos, very relaxing. Watching from Scotland ❤
Got soooo hungry watching this video 😊
Such great ideas for trail food. Always enjoy the hike and setting up camp for the night.
Now I'm hungry again!!!😂 We love your videos!
Thank you for watching!
Good lordy liftin, those look incredible🎉
I love the Fire,I always like your style! And the Sounds of everything really puts me there! My Mom use to make Pancakes w/ Bacon in them,I am definitely gonna try! Thank You for another great video!
Thank you for watching!!
that looks mighty good! Thanks for the video!
I wanna try this at home because it looks too good to wait until I get out bush crafting again 😂 great peaceful video, perfect before bed
Nice to see the split log stove fire in use as you described in another video some time ago. So easy to create and a very handy controllable fire. This type of fire set-up should be used a lot more by campers and bush crafters than it is currently.
It certainly works quite well. Thanks for watching!
Nice and simpler variant of the Swedish split fire log! Thx!
I was hoping a video would be released soon. Glad to see ya again. ✌️❤️
Those look so good. Bacon makes everything better. Watching from Australia. :)
Thanks for watching buddy!! Hope you guys have lots of fun in Australia!
The fast forward from cooking the bacon to perfect bacon was perfect. It’s easy to cook good bacon but it requires patience to cook perfect bacon lol
That is so relaxing!
Great video as always. Thanks!
That's a great looking bow saw you got there too. It has plenty of depth.
Yes sir that looked absolutely delicious. Great video bro 💯
Did you just inadvertently make an adventure time reference? Bacon pancakes? Let's gooo
Great video buddy. Made me hungry. Lol
Loved seeing another food based video. I especially like the ones where you do more "gourmet" stuff.
Cooking outdoors, in a peaceful setting is the best. I love my meat smoked on a campfire 🔥🍖🤤
Thanks for vid - seems a long time since a 'silent' - its great. Pancakes in bacon fat - you are a bad man!

Dang man! Now I want bacon and pancakes. That looks good!
I'm going to have to try that split log stove technique. Looks better than the stove burner at my last apartment!
Give it a try and let me know how it goes! I find it to work quite well. Thanks for watching!

Aight, that's it, now I want pancakes!
Brb, gonna make some pancakes!
Splendid, neat and tidy and know doubt very tasty.
Oh, that looks so good!
I'll be your first customer, if you decide to open a chain of Kusk Bushcraft restaurants. Dang that looks good!
Haha thanks for tuning in! Happy trails my friend.
Great video. Good idea
Thanks for watching!
Now that, looks delectable!
You can buy a pancake batter bottle that lets you store your mix in the bottle. Then you can just add water, put the lid back on and shake to mix. The bottle has a spout to make it easy to pour the batter neatly. Great for camping and home when making small amount of pancakes.
Personally, I like this kind of videos more than the trapping and hunting videos
FYI camp cooking is what you do with the meat after you hunt or trap it 😂
Disagree, don’t get me wrong- this video is good, but I’m here for the camping and hunting vids.
Understandable. I took a break from filming my hunting and trapping activities this season. I will be posting some hide tanning videos on my other channel 'Kusk Wild' over the summer, then the trapping and hunting will resume in the fall. Happy trails!
@KuskBushcraft FYI, my comment does not mean that your trapping and hunting videos are bad!
Looks so good, yum
I like you since 100 thousand subs, love from Indonesia
Thank you for the continued support!
Wow that looked so good man and you make it look effortless
Looks tasty and delicious Ryley! Yummm!
Thanks for watching!
Such a great video
Looks yummy.
Looks great!
Perfection
Good vid.
OK, now I'm really hungry. ;)
In Oz we make the same but with kangaroo tales instead of bacon. We call them Jumping Jacks and are delicious
Nice!
A match to start a fire and a plastic container for your maple syrup? Say it isn't so. Are you using modern amenities?! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! I was so happy when I just saw you use a match to start a fire!
A match is older technology than his stainless steel pan. 😊
Thanks
Very yum, yum, yummy breakfast my friend Stay Safe Always 🦍🦍🦍
Thanks for watching!
Was going to ask what you were dipping them then in but then remembered you're Canadian😁
Haha can't beat some quality Canadian Maple syrup!
Yum!!! 🤤 😋
great video, more hide tanning and processing!
Coming this summer on my other channel Kusk Wild. Thanks for watching.
@@KuskBushcraft No problemo, your videos are good, been watching for some years now. Sometimes it reminds me of Northern Ontario
Yummy!
yeah first up ! Nice brother keep em going 🕊🕊
Thanks for watching!
On my way!!
Those bacon dippers looked lovely!.. so now im hungry. its 2am!.. and im wondering if i should cook some bacon 😂
I assume that was maple syrup....,but, it also resembles bar and chain oil...LOL
Hahaha nothing like dipping pancakes in some Husky All-Season Oil
Making bacon pancakes... Making bacon pancakes.....making pancakesssssss
Great video as always Sir ! What camera do you use ?
Olympus TG-6
@@KuskBushcraft Ah alright ! Looks good man.
I have the same match case :)
This might be and odd question, but how do you clean your cookware and keep bears from poking around your camp at night?
Edit: Also, how do you get maple syrup and or tree sap out of your beard?
Good questions!
For cleaning my dishes I use hot water then wipe them out using a natural material (grass, moss, leaves). After they're clean of all food I dry them using a small rag I keep in my cook kit. The natural material I use to wipe them goes into my fire so as not to leave any food smells around my camp. Food, cookware, utensils, and anything else that could smell like food gets stored away from my camp (preferably downwind) and hung in a tree.
For washing maple syrup water will work just fine. Maple syrup is mostly sugars which dissolve in water.
For tree sap I find alcohol works best as it breaks down the sap which can then be washed away with water.
Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
What happened to your tent? Haven’t seen any videos on that lately.
That series is finished. Right now I'm enjoying simple camps with minimal gear. Thanks for watching!
Como esse cara não engorda comendo isso? 😅
How do you cook in stainless steel without it sticking?
He has a video on how he seasons the pan before cooking.
Yup, I pre-season my pans. Here's a link to the video explaining the process:

Thanks for watching!
more hunting and trapping videos please
I'll be filming some tanning videos on my other channel over the summer then the trapping and hunting videos will resume in the fall. Thanks for watching!
I enjoy your video content and lifestyle. Would love to send you a little gift from the east coast if there is a way to contact you.

How dry wAs the log
Not as dry as I would've liked. A good dry piece of wood is far more ideal for the split log stove.
@@KuskBushcraft I was wondering how it burnt so well for a wet log , thanksss
