  • WATCH this VLOG series as we head on out to the southern ocean to fish for Southern Rock Lobster here in Tasmania.
Onboard the commercial fishing vessel Chieftain a 17.5m/57ft steel Tasmanian built vessel now 23 years old run by a Cummins NT855.
Thank you everyone for liking and subscribing. We are new to this CZcams video stuff so its very rough, as you can expect things will get a lot smoother as this series progresses and into the future.
Apologies for Audio quality I am slowly getting use to using the microphones.
NOTE; Here is a current scenario:
If I want to leave the wharf, with current prices
Quota is $34 per kg I need 1500kg at minimum that's $51,000 out of pocket already.
    i now need Fuel which is $2.02 per liter i need 1500L = $3000
    i am at $54,000 still haven't left
i best get some Bait for the pots $4 per kg i need 1500kg= $6000
food for crew and i $800 -$1000 for up to 2 weeks
now i can leave the wharf, I'm only $61,000 out of pocket.
CRAYFISH PRICE on return of 2 weeks at sea $55 PER KG
$55x1500kg = $82,500 take out my expenses before i left the wharf, I've got $21,500 left Lets not forget I haven't paid insurance, maintenance of vessel, repairs, lost or broken fishing gear, Bank repayments and superannuation.

Awesome vid. Be great if you could interview the science guys a bit - what are they trying to achieve? What are the science objectives? How to they process the data? If pots soak too long and catch more than others how do they adjust their data for that? Everyone in Aus would be interested in this! 1. We all love lobsters! 2. Few of us can afford them! 3. China banned them - but we still can't afford them. 4. You're still working very hard! What's going on?
